Taking His Time

Luhan walked towards the front gate of the campus, and stared up at the golden bars that separated him from his dreams. GYEOKBUN FINE ARTS HIGH SCHOOL. He smiled to himself. He was a few steps closer to his and his parents goals. Since Luhan came from a middle class family in China, he promised he would study at a good school for his parents, and here he was.

"You can do this," he whispered words of encouragement to himself as he walked towards the security who checked his ID. The campus was huge. The school buildings itself was probably another 20 minute walk from the entrance, which is why a train service was located right at the gate that leads to the food strip, the Pyeonghwa Garden, the library building, the arts building, the study hall, and the main school building. Luhan caught a few girls, seniors, that were whispering and pointing at him. He turned to their direction and gave a friendly smile, making the girls giggle and huddle towards each other as they entered the train. Luhan chuckled to himself and started to walk straight towards the school.

He passed by the food strip where various cafés and restaurants were lined up, too many to choose from, that reminded him of an old fashioned city that he used to watch in movies back home. Little tables under large umbrellas were set out in front of the shops, and different groups of student sipped their coffees and were in their own little worlds. Luhan looked down at his feet, trying to avoid anything he could trip on, and noticed that the people around him grew quiet and started to whisper. He cautiously looked around and saw the students were staring at him...in disgust or in awe and admiration?

'What are they looking at? Is there something on my face, god there must be something on my face,' he worriedly thought to himself. Luhan continued to walk past the food chains and kept his head down, slightly grinning so that he seemed confident, even though he lacked every bit of it. He kept his hands shoved in his pockets and widened the handsome smile on his face.

"He must be new." "How handsome is he." Luhan heard whispers from both sides of his ears that drowned with compliments and questions after questions. He was the hot topic at GyeokBun at the moment, and the school bell hasn't even rung yet.

The school's main garden took up the whole centre of the campus where benches, ponds, and peace and quiet were. A lot of students were huddled under the trees, talking amongst themselves or playing their instruments. He received the same attention back at the food strip, and he continued to smile at them just the same.

'Try not to be too foolish today,' Minseok's gentle voice still lingered in Luhan's thoughts. He sighed deeply and couldn't help but think of how stupid he acted towards Minseok just awhile ago. He shuddered at the thought of him possibly embarrassing himself in front of even more people, worse, in front of Kim Minseok himself... again.

The library building was the smallest building compared to the others, but it was still huge in general. A tall building was attached to the library that read STUDY HALL. Luhan was told that that was where all of his after school tutors were going to be. The library had a long line up that reached towards the arts building that was located on the right side of the study building. The arts building was the second largest building on the campus. Luhan was most excited about day B's because that was when he had the whole morning in vocal and dance  class, soccer practise in the morning, and only math and gym in the afternoon. He walked past the long lineup for textbooks, and walked straight into the main building to meet his teacher advisor and principal.

The building was mesmerizing. The halls were large, filled with wide lockers that lined up together, with students shuffling and getting organized. The windows were made from the floor up to the ceiling which allowed generous amounts of sunlight to seep through and a beautiful view of the soccer field in the back. Luhan ran to the windows and looked out to see two full sized fields, freshly mowed, waiting to be played on. He closed his eyes and allowed the warmth of the sunlight to pierce into his skin.

"Are you trying to ruin your skin?" A mocking light voice said behind him. Luhan opened his eyes slowly and saw the blurry reflection of a tall slim figure in the windows that hovered over him. He felt the person's hand grab his shoulder to turn his body around slightly. Luhan looked up to meet the stranger's face. A v-shaped defined jaw, cherry lips, and blonde hair. His uniform was wrinkly and a bit wet, and his tie wasn't fastened neatly but overall, his defined broad shoulders stretched his polo, making him look masculine. He stared down at Luhan with his smiling eyes and put his other hand on his other shoulder and pushed him away from the window towards the shade.

"If you want to tan, just go to a salon," the stranger said pulling Luhan by the wrist, dragging him towards the office, "I'm Sehun by the way. Oh Sehun." The stranger was talking very fast, and Luhan couldn't fully understand.

"I know you're the new kid, scholar, right? From China? You're totally gonna join my group of friends," Sehun continued, finally coming to a stop in front of the main office. He gave Luhan a light push and gestured him to knock by raising his eyebrow towards the door.

Luhan did as told and knocked twice very lightly, but no one came. He glanced over at Sehun who was leaning against the wall, arms folded, staring at him. Suddenly, he began to walk In front of Luhan, slowly leaning in in front of him. Luhan's heart began to beat fast, he held his breath as Sehun came closer. Sehun's whole body was an inch away from Luhan's now, so close that he could hear Luhan's heart beat racing. He reached his hand out, and knocked three times loudly. BANG BANG BANG. Still no answer. Sehun leaned away from Luhan, back to his original position against the wall, just staring at him. Luhan could finally breath again.

'What just happened?!' Luhan thought to himself. He was screaming of nervousness and excitement in his head, and he kept looking over at the tall boy who wouldn't take his eyes off of him. He quickly looked back at the door that creaked open slowly. A short, chubby woman was holding piles of paper as she smiled widely, looking up at Luhan.

"Ah! The new scholar! Welcome welcome, come in, the principal is excited to meet you!" she barked. He gasped as she grabbed his to pull him in. He could hear Sehun laughing behind him.

"You're so cute!" The old woman gushed, as she lead Luhan further in to the principal's office, her hand still on his .

"Cute, but he doesn't talk much," Sehun piped in from behind. Luhan's eyes grew wide and he felt his cheeks grow hot. He peered behind his shoulder and saw Sehun smiling down at his feet as he trailed behind them. Luhan smiled.

"Xi Lu Han!" a short, bald man stood up from his desk, and shook Luhan's hand aggressively. Luhan continuously bowed to both him and the old female teacher who stood back, smiling at him admirably.

"I've never seen you this happy Mr. Kim!" Sehun jokingly yelled at the back. Mr. Kim frowned at Sehun, and started to walk towards him. Luhan stepped aside, scared that Mr. Kim would charge at Sehun, but instead, leaned in for a tight hug.

"You rascals are always making me laugh, making me age day by day! Ya! You've grown so much!" Mr. Kim said observing Sehun after he let go of their embrace.

"Not as much as Joonmyeon hyung sir," Sehun whispered. And with that, Mr. Kim playfully punched him and laughed along with the other teachers in the room.

"My son is just a late bloomer, it runs in the genes!" Mr. Kim laughed, strolling his way towards Luhan. He gave him his new textbooks, schedule, and introduced him to his teacher advisor.

"By the way, how do you like the apartment?" Mr. Kim asked Luhan, as he piled the last few text books on top of the other.

"It's great. It really big and spacious. It's as luxurious as luxurious can get," Luhan replied.

"You have no problems receiving your allowance in the mail? What about your driver? Is he fine?" Mr. Kim continued to ask.

Luhan giggled quietly and reassuringly said, "Mr. Kim, everything is perfect. I'm already very lucky and grateful that I'm here. Please, don't worry about me."

"How could I not be worried? For the duration of your stay here, I'm going to be like your own father. I only want the best for you...the best for this school. You're an addition to making GyeokBun a phenomenon. That's why I treasure every student here, especially my scholars," he declared to Luhan who nodded at every word he said, "Now, go have an amazing year."

-

Luhan followed Sehun out the office door to his locker, as Mr. Kim instructed. Halfway across the hall, Luhan was struggling, trying to carry all of his textbooks behind him, so Sehun turned around and with no words, grabbed the top half of the books and kept walking. Luhan hesitated briefly, wanting to tell him to give him back his books because it made him look less manly, but he continued to walk with only 5 text books in hands now, watching Oh Sehun lead his way. He couldn't help but smile. Oh Sehun. Luhan kept thinking about the way he stared at him in front of the office door. Oh Sehun. He started feeling butterflies in his stomach. Luhan just kept walking and following him, until he realized that they passed the east wing where his locker was located.

"Oh Sehun, wasn't my locker that way?" Luhan bobbed his head to the right where the east wing was a few feet away. Sehun stopped to face him.

"No, you're in the north wing with us," Sehun replied, walking straight ahead again. Luhan was confused. He was sure he heard Mr. Kim say that it was in the east wing, but he decided to follow to Sehun anyways. If anything, he was sure Sehun would be his first friend here at GyeokBun. He noticed that the halls grew quieter as they walked further, and the halls were quite empty.

"Sehun ah!" two voices called from ahead of them.

Two boys, shorter than Luhan, we're jogging towards them holding hands. The first boy, the louder boy with pretty corners on his mouth, tip toed in front of Sehun and grabbed a few text books from his arms, and the second, a handsome fair skinned boy walked straight to Luhan, slapping Sehun's back as he passed him. He, with no words either, grabbed three text books off Luhan's arms, put his arm over his shoulder, and walked him beside Sehun and the other boy towards the end of the hall.

"Annyeonghaseyo, my name is Luhan. I have been accepted into GyeokBun Fine Arts High School as a scholar from China. Please treat me well," Luhan said in the same, careful voice as he did to Kim Minseok that morning. The boys giggled, and Luhan felt accomplished.

"I'm Kim Joonmyeon," the boy who's hand gripped on Luhan's shoulder said joyfully, "And he's Kim Jongdae." The boy beside Sehun smiled charmingly over at Luhan. "We're all about the same age, so let's not speak in honorifics, okay?" Joonmyeon added.

Luhan nodded in response, stunned a bit by the handsome faces that he was being surrounded by.

"Ah, thank god you mentioned it. I was dying, speaking to him formally awhile ago," Sehun sighed, as he kicked the elevator button with his feet.

They all laughed and walked into the elevator, Luhan trailing behind them. CRASH. Luhan tripped before stepping into the elevator. His text books flew everywhere and he landed on his knees. His tears began to form and he felt reckless. He wanted to run away. He was so embarrassed, he didn't know what to do. He was yelling in his mind, cursing at himself and at his clumsiness. All he's been doing was making horrible and embarrassing first impressions of himself in front of everyone. His tear fell down across his cheek.

After a quick moment, he felt two familiar hands pull him up by his shoulders and pat him on his back. Luhan wiped his tear away quickly, hoping they didn't see it, and looked up to see Sehun who stopped patting his back, to close the elevator in silence.

The elevator grew quiet and no one spoke. Joonmyeon, Jongdae, and Sehun were afraid to say anything that might embarrass Luhan even more. Luhan couldn't find he right words to say. Should he apologize? No..it would make him look even stupider. He sighed deeply and thought to himself, 'Im acting like a child right now. Man up Luhan.'

"I'm really the clumsiest person in the world," Luhan said in broken Korean, following a forced laugh as he fixed his books. The boys laughed joyfully along with Luhan and the atmosphere became less tense.

"So how'd you become a scholar?" Jongdae asked Luhan as if nothing happened. The two other boys looked at Luhan for an answer, and he cleared his throat.

"I've always dreamed about going to this school. I found out two years that they created a scholarship program, so I've been on the wait list since last year, but they couldn't accept me because they already took in someone. But, I guess I got lucky this year." Luhan explained, with the boys' full attention on him.

"Ahh. Two years ago, I was actually the one who convinced my parents to open up a scholarship program for foreigners, specially for my best friend Kris. That same year, Tao was accepted with his wushu skills-." Joonmyeon explain, but was cut off by Jongdae.

"And last year, Lay hyung was accepted for his dancing and instrument skills. They're all Chinese, like you." Jongdae said lively, bringing the mood up even more. Luhan nodded as he processed what they said.

"And what's your skills?" Sehun asked for the first time after the awkward silence. Luhan looked up at him and half smiled.

"The main reason why I got accepted is for my vocal skill, and soccer skills. Mr. Kim put me up for a soccer and vocal based scholarship." Luhan replied.

The elevator stopped and read the 30th floor. It felt like ages, getting to the top, and Luhan now began to worry at the thought of meeting more people whom he might receive bad judgement from, but seeing Joonmyeon and Jongdae, Luhan felt relieved as they were very friendly. Sehun however, was different. He made Luhan feel different. Be it a good way or a bad way, Luhan still couldn't figure him out.

"Soccer?! That's awesome! Then you're gonna get along with Minseok hyung," Jongdae chirped, walking out of the elevator first.

'Minseok?' Luhan thought to himself. 'MINSEOK?!' His brain was going fuzzy, he was struck, puzzled. Minseok, as in, the Minseok who lives in the same building as him? Minseok who he first encountered and completely embarrassed himself in front of?! Minseok...who's beautiful eyes Luhan can't get off of his mind? Minseok..who told him not to be too foolish today? Luhan began to feel a crushing pain in his chest of nervousness and his stomach was in knots. Was he about to see Kim Minseok again? He snapped himself out of his worry state, back to reality when Sehun walked passed Luhan and lightly gave him a shove.

"Come on and meet the guys," Sehun said over his shoulder. Luhan followed Sehun, and waited for Jongdae to open the only door in front of the elevator. Luhan peeped over Sehun and Joonmyeon's shoulder and saw Jongdae stick his finger on a finger scanner. The door unlocked, and he and yelled out in the room,

"He's here! The new scholar is here guys!"

Hey reader! I hope you enjoyed the chapter. So I wasn't planning on making this fic a Luhan based story, but I guess it kind of just happened.
