Chapter Three

Enigma

Joonmyeon stood outside the male toilets waiting for Jongdae to finish whatever he was doing. The younger male had said that he had some business that he had to deal with alone and that there was no sutiable place other than the toilets to fufill it. He glanced down at the folder in his arms, one with a picture of all the murder victim's pictures on the front. The hardest one to look at was of his sister who smiled at the clerk innocently, completely unaware of his gruesome end that would happen only hours later. On the inside of the folder was the picture Junho had taken which was enlarged so Joonmyeon and Kyungsoo could get a good look at the features of the mysterious man. The officer couldn't help but wonder about the man's identity - his history and his previous ambitions. He wondered what he worked as and the facade he lived by. From the way he was dressed Joonmyeon could tell that the man was street smart - the part in which Junho had died was a place known for it's people in hoodies and hats which caused the individual to become concealed into the public. Underneath the picture was the names of two males; Jang Wooyoung and Nichkhun Horvejkul and their addresses. Both were good friends of Mr Lee and had come foward to give their evidence to the police.

Inside the toilets Jongdae stared at himself in the mirror. In one view, he saw an innocent, kind and thoughtful man who had no faults on his records what so ever. A man who was destined to well in life and get the career he worked to hard to obtain, a career where he could pay for his family after everything they had done for him. In another view however he saw a dark person - a dark person waiting to be unleashed again. A person with a twisted smirk that left wherever it was shown with bad memories. This person has no ambitions, no goals and no career in mind. It scared him that it just lurked within him, waiting. Waiting for the day that it can come out again and show the world another side of him - a darker side. He looked down as he ran the tap and took some of the water and rubbed his cheeks with it, rubbing his cheeks and washing his face. He sighed in frustration as he slung his messanger bag across his left shoulder and drying his hands before walking out and greeting Joonmyeon.

"You ready now?" Joonmyeon teased, smiling slightly as he turned to go to his car.

Jongdae nodded as he buttoned up his jacket, "Yeah, I just had to use the bathroom."

The two walked out to Joonmyeon's car and whilst they drove up to his house Jongdae phoned his best friend, Chang-Hyun or Ricky and told him that he would be home later.

The remainder of the car trip was silent as the two males were engrosed in different things; Joonmyeon on driving and Jongdae was admiring the different scenary. Joonmyeon was taking a road that had more trees lining it's sides, a contrast to the city scene Jongdae had been used to seeing daily. By the time the pair got to the elder's house, the sun had began setting. Joonmyeon parked his car in front of a small, single floored condo-bungalo mix and showed Jongdae inside.

Once inside, Joonmyeon smiled at Jongdae, "Go and sit on the coach and make yourself at home - how to you take your tea?"

Jongdae shrugged ambiently as he hunt his beige jacket on the peg on the wall beside the door, "Er, black - two sugars."

Joonmyeon nodded and disappeared to the kitchen where the sounds of cupboards being opened sounded in the background. Jongdae looked around the living room of the detectives' house. The walls were covered in a light cream coloured wallpaper with fancy, natural patterns drawn on in black paint. Not a square of the wall was left uncovered but instead of looking messy or cluttered it made the room look elegant and homely. The floor was wooden and Jongdae could hear the older walk around the kitchen as he walked fowards into the room. As he turned the hallway's corner Jongdae saw the large glass sliding door that led to a balcony with two recliners which raced the sun. In front of it was three white sofas with a glass coffee table in the centre of them which overlooked an electric fireplace which was beneath a flat screen TV. Underneath the table was a red rug which looked to be fluffy and soft. What caught his attention the most was the wall paper adorning what was visible of the wall surrounding the glass door. It had the same colour as the other wallpaper but instead of elegant stripes curved in places, an array of black spots were peppering the wall, as if somebody had pulled the bristles back on a toothbrush just to see the outcome. The colours clashed but instead of looking distasteful, the whole room looked cosey, as if someone aimed to make it unique in it's beauty.

The wall captivated the younger enough so that he didn't hear Joonmyeon set down two mugs on the table, nor Joonmyeon walking beside him. The older coughed and Jongdae jumped slightly, "Like the view?"

Truthfully, Jongdae hadn't taken much notice to the view, but as he glanced out the door he could see why Joonmyeon pointed it out first; the house was on the edge of mountain, overlooking the city line of Seoul, the sun as it set below said line gave off an red-orange glow. Truthfully, Jongdae had never really noticed the beauty of the sky and couldn't help but fix his eyes onto it, following the puffed clouds as they strolled past slowly. Joonmyeon looked over at the younger and smiled, knowing that he was impressed. He looked back and inspected the skyline himself. He sighed as he experienced the beauty - he had many times before but it never failed to impress him. And then, in the distance, he spotted something. Perched on a house was a single raven or crow. The silhouette seemed to turn to face the direction of his house and Joonmyeon stared at it. It'd seem that it stared back before flying towards the setting sun. Joonmyeon wasn't superstitious but his mother had been and she always told him tales that before his father had died she had seen a raven and that it had flown into the house, circling the chair that he would eventually die in. Joonmyeon shuddered as he recalled his mother's tears. Apparently, he hadn't been the only one who'd seen it.

Jongdae turned and faced the older, "Joonmyeon-hyung...did you see that bird?"

Joonmyeon glanced at Jongdae's face for a second before his eyes found their way back to the house, "The raven? Yeah, I did."

"I hate them, they always mean bad things."

Joonmyeon watched as Jongdae visibly shuddered and he tore his eyes away from the skyline, "Do you wanna watch some TV? I think Boys Over Flowers is on."

Jongdae nodded and took a seat on one of the couches. As he did so, Joonmyeon pulled the big brown curtains over the glass door, hearing the squak of a bird in the distance.
