Chapter One

Enigma

It was a bitterly cold morning in March when Kim Joonmyeon decided he would wear the scarf given to him at Christmas time by his work partner, Do Kyungsoo. It was an unusual combination of colours; a purplish magenta colour and a grassy green. Then again, neither Kyungsoo nor Joonmyeon wre strangers to the realm of the weird and the unusual. The scarf itself was fluffy, warm and inviting, just like Joonmyeon and his personality - or so everyone said. Despite being a high ranking police detective and striking intimidation to people, Joonmyeon was kind and loving. Unlike some in his business, like Kyungsoo, he would still squirm slightly when grusome murders were shown when he had to go and investigate. The worst thing about his job was when he had to go and see the body up close, which caused him to take some time to himself around the nearest corner and have to sick up whatever he had at the nearest meal. He also cared a lot for those convicted, earning him the nickname 'Suho.' On top of that, he remained among the popular detectives throughout Seoul due to his and Kyungsoo's efficiency. The case he was currently on, however, did not show this efficiency and professionalism. In the past two years there had been four murders, all brutal. All with no conclusions and nobody convicted. That annoyed him greatly - he had learnt in his early days that there was always an answer, even if it was hidden under layers of mystery. There had been many nights slept that were filled with questions, warranties and queries and then there were some sleepless nights, nights where Joonmyeon feared for the public's safety. Whoever the mystery killr was, they were obviously dangerous and capable of the doings of a mad, deranged person.

The police station was tranquil and relaxed - something Joonmyeon wasn't accustomed to. He was more familiar to the reception are being loud and busy, people screaming how they were innocent or interns rushing around the place to get to their fixated work places. Joonmyeon always found the time to take to the receptionist on duty or whoever was filling in when he signed in. On that particular morning, it was Park Chanyeol from forensics who was filling in as the normal receptionist in the morning of weekdays, Im Yoona, was still at home. Joonmyeon smirked to himself as he signed in, "Fancy seeing you here Yeol. Is forensics slow this time of year?"

"We'd be busy if you found some leads, then we would be able to do our jobs," Chanyeol huffed, playfully rolling his eyes, "Anyway, you got any new leads hyung?"

Joonmyeon shook his head, some guilt etched onto his face, "No, but Soo has called me in early, so there's some chance there."

The taller nodded, "I see. Tell me if you find anything out."

Chanyeol and his team of forensics had been assigned to work on Joonmyeon and Kyungsoo's case along side them. The team was composed of Chanyeol and four others; Oh Sehun, Byun Baekhyun, Seo Joohyun and Jessica Jung or Jung Sooyeon as she was officially known. The two forces were paired together after the first murder however even they couldn't find anything, no clues, no nothing.

As he passed the occupied cells to get to his shared office, Joonmyeon glanced at the sleeping convicts wondering if they'd be bailed or face the court and go to jail. He opened the door of his office to be greeted by his partner.

"Ah, you showed up this time," Kyungsoo smirked, standing beside one of the seats to the table in the middle of the room.

Joonmyeon made his way across the room and sat in the chair opposite Kyungsoo, chucking, "Hush. Is there a reason you called me in too early?"

Kyungsoo nodded slowly, taking his own seat, "I shouldn't be jappy but," He paused and fished a file out of his bag, "Lee Junho, died three days ago."

Joonmyeon raised an eyebrow, "And? Mysterious person?"

Kyungsoo nodded again, his smile widening slightly, "Yeah, well, maybe not anymore."

"How so? Read the file out."

Kyungsoo coughed, "Lee Junho. Twenty six years old. Murdered three days ago on the 23rd March 2014. Mr Lee was an avid photographer who was due to get married four days from his murder day. He was shot in the thorat and face."

Joonmyeon cringed as he invisioned the scene, "Lovely. Looks like their methods seem to be getting less glamerous."

Kyungsoo bit a chuckle back before grabbing a picture from the file, "Mr Lee did however manage to get this picture."

Kyungsoo slid the photo on the table as if it were a playing card for Joonmyeon to look out. The photo, although the sky dark, showed an average sized man holding a gun. He wore a dark coloured baseball cap which concealed his eyes, meaning only his malicious cat-like smirk was showing.

"Go through the other murders Soo, we need to see if there's a connection," Joonmyeon said, eyes still on the photo.

Kyungsoo coughed again and nodded, "Okay. The first killed was Cho Kyuhyun on the 3rd May 2012. He was shot in the head and then hacked messily."

"Shooting is the common trend? Didn't they all get shot or something?"

Kyungsoo shrugged as he flicked through his folder, "29th May 2013, Hwang Miyoung, also known as Tiffany or Stephanie. Killed by having her feet and hands hacked off before choking on her own vomit."

The room remained silence as Kyungsoo looked through the other deaths.

"9th September 2013, Kim Kibum. His lips were sewn togther and he had his eyes shot individually."

Joonmyoen squirmed slightly making Kyungsoo laugh lightly.

"11th December 2012, Kwon Yuri. She was shot multiple times and had a concrete block dropped on her chest."

As the last murder was read out, a man had walked into the room holding a file. Kyungsoo smiled at him as Joonmyeon gave him the 'Suho' smile, "Ah! Jongdae. What do you bring us?"

Jongdae extended an arm out to hand the folder over to Kyungsoo, "The file for the latest murder victim, it also includes the statements of the families of the previous victims that you interviewed last night."

Joonmyeon couldn't help but to inspect the features of the man. Outfite wise he wore a tight fitting, dark brown pair of chinos with a pastel blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. He wore a skinny black tie which was coupled with an undone top button, giving him an edgy yet still professional look. His hair was messily spiked slightly at the front and it seemed he had a very thin line of eyeliner on his upper eyelid to make his eyes seem fuller than they actually were. He was slightly tanned, but only slightly, nothing to make him look out of place. In fact, compared to the average Korean he would be considered paler than normal. The one thing that held his attention was his lips, upturned slightly giving him a cat-like look.

"Thanks Jongdae. Go and erm, get us some coffees," Kyungsoo said, inspecting the newest file, waving a hand absent mindedly.

"Alright. Starbucks?" Jongdae asked, grabbing his wallet from his back pocket to check he had the money. Once satisfied that he did, he walked to the door and waited for Kyungsoo to reply.

"Of course."

As Jongdae left the room, Joonmyeon's eyes fell on Kyungsoo, "He's the new intern?"

"Yeah, he's nice, professional. Always on the dot. Regardless, we have the latest murder that happened in the afternoon yesterday, around one o'clock. The person i-"

"You know Kyungsoo," Joonmyeon said, snapping his fingers in thought, "The name Lee Junho seems familiar. Lee Junho...Lee Junho..."

He repeated the name a few more times before he snapped his fingers loudly, causing Kyungsoo to jump slightly, "I've got it!"

"How do you know the man Joo, how?"

"My sister was marrying a Lee Junho tomorrow. Which reminds me I need to get my suit ready."

Kyungsoo's face paled as he glanced down at the file in his hands, "Y-Your sister is Kim Hyoyeon?"

Joonmyeon flashed Kyungsoo a confused look, "I thought you knew that."

Without words, Kyungsoo threw the file on the table, looking away as he waited for Joonmyeon's reaction. Joonmyeon retained his confused look as he looked at the file before him. The name 'KIM HYOYEON' was printed in the centre with a picture of his smiling sister on underneath it.

"No," Joonmyeon said, eyes widening as he shook his head in disbelief, "No, she can't have died. It's fake."

Kyungsoo shook his head as he grabbed the file and cleared his throat, "Kim Hyoyeon."

Joonmyeon whimpered slightly and Kyungsoo took it as an indication to carry on to get it over with, "Kim Hyoyeon. 25 years old. Murdered yesterday on 25th March 2014. She was buying beer for her wedding when she was murdered. From inspection, Minseok from Sooyoung's forensics had concluded that she had all twelve beer bottles thrown at her with the intention of hitting her head. On an estimated guess Minseok said that a total of nine cans had successfully made contact with her face. Two cans were further used to smash her head until she was dead or unconscious. If that didn't kill her she was kicked into a swimming pool where she would have drowned. She was found an hour later by residents."

Joonmyeon felt his stomach drop and he looked at the floor. He had mixed feelings about it - on one had he was sad and felt a small sense of guilt that if he hadn't caught the person sooner she would've been alive. On the other hand he felt anger and became more determined to take down his sister's killer.

"This is the last picture of a living Hyoyeon. It's the security camera of the shop where she purchased the beers. The man in the photo Junho took is visible in the background."

Joonmyeon's eyes shot up and he looked at the picture. Sure enough, in the foreground was a smiling Hyoyeon as she converesed with the cashier, and in the background the man, who wore similar clothes as he did in the photo Junho took, stood, smiling or smirking at her, "So he did it?"

Kyungsoo nodded as he took another piece of paper from the file, "Yes. Or at least, I think so. Based on the interviews of family members of the previously murdered, this man was seen near their loved ones or had contacted them from either one hour to a day of their murder."

"How did he...linger behind the others?"

"He was spotted on a CCTV film walking behind Kyuhyun only minutes before the shooting. He apparently held an intensive conversation with Miyoung about two hours before she was killed. For Kibum and Yuri we checked their phones to see they had phonecalls with this man. We know this as we tracked the phone and it was abandoned near Miss Kwon's body. When it came to Junho none of his family members seemed to see anything, but as we went into his friends one snapped a picture of Mr Lee and in the background the man can be seen once again."

"We have something," Joonmyeon whispered, excitement taking over the anger when he realised he was close to taking the person down, "We have something Soo!"

The two decided to celebrate by going to the nearest Starbucks on their own, completely forgetting Jongdae's errand. As he celebrated, Joonmyeon couldn't help but link the killer's lips to the new interns...
