Wrong Prize, Wrong Dreams

A Race to My Heart

The tension that arose between every living soul that was present was unbearable. Jayla slowly scanned every face that was around and she could tell that this wasn’t a quite popular situation. And she could see why. This was the first time she was experiencing this kind of mental battle where everyone was rooting for dominance.

What shocked her the most was the fact that the same guy that was nice and sweet towards her the other day when she had to deal with Ilhoon at the gym, was standing there right in front of her boyfriend and basically burned holes in Himchan’s face with his eyes.

As if it wasn’t enough to deal with Nam alone, God basically made two of them which meant double the trouble. And Ilhoon’s existence was only the cherry on top in this mess.

“You don’t seem glad seeing me,” Yongguk’s dark voice broke the awkward silence.

Himchan straightened up after resting on his car and crossed his arms in front of his chest while slowly walking towards the twins, “Well you’re wrong, you know? I was kind of looking forward seeing you again,” he practically grinned arrogantly into his face.

The two of them went on with their staring contest before Nam interrupted them both by pushing Yongguk to the side and turning to look at Himchan again, “Fair play tonight.”

“Tell that to that one over there,” he nodded towards Ilhoon who was watching them with a smirk on his face.

“Ilhoon, don’t play games tonight or you won’t go home in one piece,” Nam threatened with a serious voice.

The younger rolled his eyes before looking past Nam and right at Himchan, “First give me my prize from last time and then we can discuss tonight’s rules.”

Himchan could feel the ball of rage grow the instant as he aggressively walked towards Ilhoon to give him a piece of prize he deserved but before he could reach him he was stopped by Yongguk who pulled at his arm.

“Still violent? Woah, that’s not nice you know?” he spoke while holding onto him.

Himchan looked to his side to meet his eyes, “I don’t think you’re the one to speak.”

“Okay guys, it’s enough! Oh my God…”

Everyone, including Jayla, looked towards the direction that the familiar female voice came from before they spotted Hyuna walking towards the middle with an irritated look on her face.

“We could go on like this until tomorrow. You’re seriously worse than girls. Like for real,” she walked past Jayla and up to the middle with a glass of something in her hand.

Jayla could already tell that she managed to gulp down a few drinks already which meant that she was about to get really flirty and talkative.

“Get in your cars, boys. What are you waiting for?”

Every participant exchanged looks while heading towards their cars. Himchan opened the door to his car before looking back at Jayla a last time with a worried expression on his face. What Ilhoon meant with his prize was more than obvious to both of them and she could see why he was worried.

“Alrighty, everyone please drive up to your positions!” Hyuna shouted around while everyone brought their rides to live.

Yongguk who was standing beside Nam before, was now located right in front of Jayla, on the other side of the crowd. He was standing with Zelo and another little shorter guy that she have seen with Nam a few times before.

“That must be Jongup,” she whispered to herself and just then Yongguk looked towards her direction just to lock eyes with her.

Feeling really awkward and somewhat scared, Jayla looked away the same second not noticing that he smiled from her cute action.

Yongguk rested his hands in his jeans pockets while having a really hard time looking away from Jayla. He enjoyed the view of her small figure that was unfortunately standing in between Daehyun and Youngjae, constantly reminding him that she was taboo which drove him crazy.

“Okay, okay. I think they are about to start,” Jongup, who was standing beside him, interrupted his small check out session and nodded towards the start line.

Everyone watched as Hyuna walked from one car to the other to check if everyone was with her before standing in the middle with her back facing the crowd.

“Ready…” she lifted her hands up, “Set…” she looked to her left and right while the engines growled desperately to take over the roads, “GO!”

It took them two and a half seconds to disappear from everyone’s sight before the crowd shouted and whistled in excitement.

The music was loud and all the people that still waited for the drivers to come back, drank and danced in the meanwhile. There was a lot of flirting around and making out just like in the clubs. Only that this was outside in the middle of the night with the street lights the only source of lighting, and the DJ one of the cars’ music players.

Jayla was walking alone around the huge parking lot they stayed at as she observed the surroundings not noticing that she was being watched from a few feet away. She took small and slow steps while resting her hands in her back jeans pockets. The night was getting chillier and with only a regular shirt on her upper body, Jayla could feel the wind blow right at her skin.

Trying to shake the cold off, she shook her upper body and head once before walking to the nearest wall to protect herself from the wind. Before she could lean on the cold block, she felt something warm and soft covering her shoulders. She looked down to see that it was a man’s jacket just to look up and realize that Yongguk was standing right in front of her with a weak smile on his face.

“I could tell that you were shivering over here,” he said before Jayla could say anything else.

“Uhm, yeah thanks but I don’t ne-“

“No, please keep it. I’m sure Himchan wouldn’t want you to catch a cold,” he said before he looked over his shoulder as if he wanted to make sure that her boyfriend wasn’t anywhere in sight.

She looked away from him to take a grip of his jacket as she hesitated on whether she should keep it on or give it back but being very sensitive to cold weather, she decided to keep it on for now.

“I will give it back once everyone arrives,” she mumbled silently once she really realized what was going on.

Her boyfriend’s enemy whom she already met a few times, walked up to her to give her a piece of clothing. But what was even stranger was that he was still standing there, not planning on leaving her any time soon.

Yongguk couldn’t really put a finger on what was going on in front of him but he would be lying if he said that he didn’t enjoy it. According to Zelo, Jayla was trouble but somehow she always ended up being tiny and sweet in front of him.

He took a step to the side to stand side to side with Jayla before leaning on the wall too with crossed arms. There was a short and somewhat awkward silence between them and he decided to do something about it.

“I guess you always come to the race as support for Himchan?” he broke the silence by carefully asking an obvious question.

She quickly glanced at him as she shrugged, “I don’t know. I just like being here.”

“So you’re not here for him?” he arched his eyebrows.

Jayla looked again at him but this time she kept her glare on him, “Of course I am.”

“Okay,” he nodded and turned his focus on the crowd in front of them.

Jayla on the other hand couldn’t help but scan his figure from top to toe. Tall with long legs, broad shoulders, nice fashion style and dark stylish hair. Unlike Himchan, he has sharp dark yet mysterious eyes followed by a perfectly shaped nose and naturally pouty and kissable lips.

She widened her eyes once she realized what she was doing and shook her head before turning her attention to something else before her thoughts could go out of hand. Did she just admired Yongguk’s appearance?

What confused her even more is that the male beside her looked exactly like Nam yet she has never been in this situation with his twin before. Not even once has a thought of her checking him out crossed her mind yet here she was, secretly enjoying the sight of Yongguk.

This is bad, this is really bad, she mentally warned herself, I shouldn’t be here with him. Not wanting to make this situation even more complicated than it already was, she decided to take action.

“Oh,” she straightened up out of nowhere, “I just remembered that Hyuna was looking for me,” she lied while avoiding any eye contact that could give her away.

Yongguk couldn’t help but let out a small giggle since her acting was so horrible but he decided to go with it. He knew that he was making her nervous.

“Okay, sure. You better find her then,” he winked at her.

He could see her blushing slightly and right in that moment he could feel the excitement in his body. He really enjoyed having her near him. Just then, he saw her taking off his jacket but before she could go any further he took hold of her hands and stopped her.

“No, keep it on. You need it,” he reminded her.

“Bu-but it’s your jacket. Don’t you need it?”

“I will be fine. You can keep it on and just give it back to me another time.”

“Oh, okay… Thanks,” she let out before turning around and slowly walking away from him, leaving him alone watching her every step until she was out of sight.

Yongguk took a deep breath, “She definitely belongs to the wrong guy,” he spoke to himself before shaking his head and walking towards the group where Zelo and Jongup were.

Thirty minutes went by faster than expected and the first one to cross the goal line was of course the beautiful blue Lexus that belonged to Himchan. The male inside of the car smiled arrogantly in victory as he parked his car near the crowd that shouted his name.

He stepped out of the car just in time when Ilhoon and Nam arrived, and moments later the rest of the participants reached the end too. A lot of people, including Namjoon and Yoongi walked up to the racers to talk and congratulate the winner.

Jayla stood a few feet away from the crowd and once she saw that her boyfriend was the winner and everything was alright, she decided to head home alone since she was still mad at him.

She went to her car, unlocked the door and just when she was about to open it she was blocked by an arm that took a hold of hers. With furrowed eyebrows she followed the arm and looked to her side to see her brother stand there with a confused look on his face.

“Where are you going?”

“Home,” she replied with an irritated tone as she shook off his arm.

“What about Himchan?”

“What about him?”

Youngjae looked at his sister with a tired look, “Jay, he lives with you. You can’t do this to him.”

“Karma Youngjae, karma is a ,” she nodded her head as she made a point that was obvious to both of them, “You can greet him that he can come home once he is ready to talk. About everything.”

“Wow, I’m so tired of you two,” he rolled his eyes as he raised his hands in the air, “But do whatever you think is the best for you. Just don’t come to me crying.”

“I won’t, trust me,” she fake-grinned as she closed the door before starting her car and driving away, leaving Youngjae behind at the parking lot.

He wasn’t the only one tired of this whole situation, Jayla too has had enough of this whole thing and wanted it to end as soon as possible by either trying to fix this situation together with her boyfriend or going the hard way. The more emotional way.

The air was fresh and the sun was making its entrance, officially starting the day. The streets weren’t that crowded yet since the citizen were just waking up to prepare for the day.

This was the perfect setting for a morning run to clear ones soul and thoughts and start the day with a positive mind.

Jayla woke up before the sunrise and began running around her neighborhood just to take a step further and run on a path that lead her to the center of the city. She listened to very upbeat songs on her mp3 player that gave her strength and motivation to run more and more but once the last song that had a calmer beat came on, it was time to stop.

She ran up to a bench to take a few deeper breaths before stretching her legs and body to prevent muscle soreness during the day. As she rested one of her legs on the bench and bowed her upper body after her leg she felt a presence beside her.

With furrowed brows she looked to her side just to be greeted by a newly awake and strangely attractive male. His eyes were still puffy from sleep and his hair was messy. Typical bed hair which Jayla was a er for.

“Good morning beautiful,” Yongguk spoke with a surprisingly hoarse voice before taking a sip from his cup of coffee that steamed in the morning freshness.

Jayla hated to admit it, but his voice made her knees go weak. His whole presence was too much for her but she couldn’t bring herself to walk away.

“Morning?” her response was more like a question.

Yongguk chuckled softly before putting his cup down on the bench, “Let me help you with that,” he offered instead as he suddenly walked up to Jayla and took a hold of her leg.

She slightly widened her eyes as she quickly removed her leg from the bench while shaking her head, “I don’t think that’s necessary…”

“Of course it is, let me show you how to do it,” he insisted before lifting her leg up and this time she felt too weak to even speak against him since the only thing he needed to do was talk and his voice would make her give up everything.

Slowly he lifted her leg higher and higher while walking closer to her, “Relax,” he whispered, “You need it.”

“Need what?” she weakly asked.

“To relax,” he looked into her eyes as he took another step closer, “I heard about your relationship. You need to get out of it.”

Jayla gulped down her own saliva while switching focus between his eyes, “Why?”

“You deserve someone better,” he said under his breath, “Someone like me…”

He slowly let his eyes wander down to her moist lips and stared at them for a moment. Jayla could feel the lust in her body grow and closed her eyes before letting her lips rest on Yongguk’s.

It started with small and short pecks which developed into deeper and hungrier kisses. Yongguk slowly let go of her leg just to rest his hands on her waist. Getting the clue, Jayla lifted hers and embraced his face.

This moment felt so good yet so wrong but in that instant the lust was stronger than the mind.

Suddenly a beep was heard out of nowhere, “Hey Jay, it’s me Hyuna..”

Jayla furrowed her eyebrows while holding onto Yongguk tighter, not wanting this kiss to end.

“… I know you’re still asleep but I just called to check up on you,” Hyuna’s voice was heard again.

Jayla refused to open her eyes and instead closed them even more as if that was possible.

“You left early yesterday so I was kind of worried. Call me when you wake up! Bye,” her voice was followed by another beep and it ended in silence again.

There was no Yongguk anymore. No fresh air that surrounded them. And definitely no lips onto hers. Opening her eyes, she realized what was happening.

“Holy crap,” she whispered to herself as she quickly went up from her bed, “What the hell did I just dream about?!”

“Jay, can you take those customers?” Mona nodded towards a couple that was standing on the corner of the bar while mixing up a drink for someone else.

“Sure,” she nodded before picking up two glasses and walking over to them, “Hi, what can I get you?”

Jayla was on her shift tonight together with Mona. They were usually three bartenders at one bar but their third colleague called sick half an hour before the club opened so they were only two for tonight. But Jayla didn’t mind, she knew that they could handle it on their own, besides it was fun too.

She liked working there since it made her think about other things than Himchan… or even last night’s dream. Being the mentally strong and stubborn girl she was, she decided to push away that dream for as long as possible and pretend like it never happened.

After the couple ordered their drinks, she quickly filled the glasses with the liquids needed for their cocktails and mixed them up before serving. With a smile on their faces their paid their drinks and walked away to the dance floor.

The beat was great tonight since one of Jayla’s favorite DJ’s played. She was also a good friend which made the whole atmosphere even better.

“Yah, stop looking that way you won’t see me up there,” Jayla heard Andy’s voice from the side, interrupting her thoughts.

She smiled while heading towards her, “Well excuse me DJ Andy for underestimating your ability to play good music even away from your booth.”

“That’s right honey,” she winked before pointing a finger towards the bottles behind her, “The usual. Make it two too, I don’t have time to go down again.”

“Alright,” she nodded and handed them over right away.

“What do I owe you,” Andy began reaching for her wallet but was quickly interrupted by Jayla’s hand.

“It’s on the house since the music tonight is great.”

Andy nodded while opening her drink and taking a sip before nodding, “It’s pleasure making business with you,” and with that, she walked back to her booth.

“Excuse me!”

Jayla heard another customer call from the side so she didn’t hesitate on grabbing a clean and empty glass before walking towards the direction of the voice. But halfway to the corner she spotted a face she didn’t need to see there.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

“Now, now… You shouldn’t talk with your customers like that,” he smirked while leaning on the bar.

“Ilhoon, why are you here?” she hissed while leaving the glass she was holding, on the counter. She refused to serve him anything. Heck, she wanted him out of here because his presence only meant trouble.

“I heard lover boy isn’t here tonight so I thought I could pick up my prize,” he his lips while eyeing her up and down across from the bar.

“You have to be kidding with me?”
