(Unwanted) Reunion

A Race to My Heart

A/N: Christmas break is over and with that.. I'm back to writing again!

”I’m leaving!” Jayla informed her boyfriend as she picked up her car keys from the shelf beside her.

“When are you coming back?” Himchan walked out of the kitchen with a cup of coffee in his hands.

“I don’t know. Maybe in an hour or so, why?”

“Just wondering,” he walked up to her and pulled her into a tight hug which he managed to perform with one arm, “I can help you pack your stuff once you get home.”

Himchan planted a soft kiss on Jayla’s forehead as he her silky long brown hair before releasing his grip around her. Jayla looked up and smiled at her boyfriend.

“Sounds good to me,” she nodded, “See you later,” and with that she walked out of their apartment and headed towards her car.

She and Youngjae planned on visiting their parents over the weekend where they could take a break from their hectic lives in town. Before leaving for a more peaceful environment, Jayla decided to take a ride through the city one time. Since she is doing it alone, she is going to have time to think about certain things in her life. This is not the first time that she is doing it. Whenever she needed some time to think over one thing or the other, she would always jump into her car and drive without any further thoughts.

Those drives weren’t some regular once where she moves around town where everyone could see her. No, what she did was something that one could already expect from Himchan’s girlfriend because what Jayla actually did was race on her own on every road that was possible. Those roads where mostly located between hills and valleys but last month she even discovered an abandoned old airport where she could take advantage of its long and extensive road.

Jayla started driving slowly through the town but when she began approaching her destination, the pressure on the gas pedal increased and with that the speed too.

“Woah, long time no adrenaline kick,” she spoke to herself as she entered the airport area.

She liked this. She liked moving around in lightning-fast motion. Just having the chance to let her feelings and thoughts out through driving was one of the best things in live because that was her one hour outside all the trouble that she was in normally.

If someone said to her two years ago that being in a relationship with Himchan wouldn’t be easy she would have taken that as a warning. Maybe she would even stop herself from falling deeper in love with him. And maybe… just maybe, she wouldn’t have to deal with an overprotective boyfriend.

As those thoughts were creeping back into Jayla’s mind, she caught herself pressing more on the gas pedal, making her car move in a riskily fast speed. Before she knew it, she was up on 220 kilometers per hour. The fastest she has ever driven.

“Amazing!”

While she was moving forward, she couldn’t help but shout out loud from the adrenaline that rushed through her whole body. Once she approached the end of the road, she pulled to the side and drifted confidently to the opposite side of the way before barking and stopping the machine in one place.

“Oh my God,” she released her grip from the steering wheel and ran her finger through her hair, “I… I have to do it again.”

She didn’t wait another second before repeating the exactly same thing she did just a moment ago. At the same time, slowly but surely, her thoughts returned to the original topic and suddenly she couldn’t help but think about the events from the day before.

Her bumping into a very strange Nam, to be more specific.

Ever since she first started dating Himchan, one of his main warnings were to stay away from his enemies. Especially Nam and Ilhoon. He warned her that those two weren’t good people at all and whenever she would bump into them, she should try to walk away from them and avoid any kind of contact.

Whenever she saw Nam in person, he would always have this very cold and strong aura around him. He wouldn’t even talk much and when he did, it would only be with more powerful people. Like her boyfriend.

All those things contradicted the Nam she walked into yesterday. And that confused her to the point where she was actually scared. So scared that she skipped the part of telling Himchan about the whole situation. She didn’t want him to worry even more since the meeting wasn’t dangerous in general. In fact, it was the opposite of dangerous.

Nam was one hundred percent different in his behavior. His usually unattractive frown was replaced with a charmingly wide smile to the point where one could see his gums. His usually stiff position was switched with a more relaxed posture. His usually deep, low and monotone voice changed into an equally deep voice but with more feelings.

Everything about him was different. Everything except his looks so there had to be something wrong with him. Something that Jayla couldn’t really put a finger on and to be honest, she didn’t even want to. In the end, she decided to ignore everything and pretend like it never happened. In that way she would stay out of trouble.

Not wanting to waste any more minute on thinking about nonsense things, she pressed the gas pedal even more and drove off between the hills.

“So you haven’t told Jayla about Yongguk yet?” Daehyun crossed his arms across the table his was leaning on.

“No,” Himchan answered shortly while check his e-mails on the laptop.

“Himchan…”

“I will tell her sometime later.”

“Does she even know that he exists?” Daehyun leaned forward a bit as he eyed Himchan whose no-answer silence told him everything. “You got to be kidding with me? Himchan, why didn’t you tell her?!”

The elder male looked up from the device in front of him and rolled his eyes at his ridiculous reaction, “I didn’t see a reason to why I would?”

“Oh, you need a reason? Like one single reason? I can give you a whole bunch of stupid reasons!”

“Yah! It’s been three years since he left Seoul and two years since Jayla and I started dating. What did you expect me to say? ‘Hey, Jay. There is this guy who isn’t in Seoul anymore and blah blah’. No forget it Daehyun.”

“You know, this can cause trouble. Like a lot of trouble,” the younger commented in the end.

“You don’t have to worry about that. I will tell her once the time comes. Now write down this address that I got from a guy and send it to Yoongi so he can look it up.”

“Whatever man,” Daehyun frowned and picked up his phone to do what he was told.

After driving home, packing her stuff, saying goodbye to Himchan and meeting up with Youngjae in front of his building. The siblings together with Sohyun, drove to their parents’ house.

“I hope you’re okay with me coming with you two, Jayla. I really told Youngjae that I didn’t want to disturb t-“

“It’s okay, silly,” Jayla interrupted her brother’s girlfriend and looked over her shoulder with a smile.

“Really now?”

“Yes, now stop mentioning it and let’s enjoy this weekend.”

Even though the plan was to visit their parents alone, Youngjae told Sohyun to come with them an hour before their departure. At first Jayla didn’t know what she felt about it but then remembered that her whole family actually loved Sohyun. She is a very sweet and kind hearted girl and sometimes, Jayla teased Youngjae that his girlfriend was too good for him.

Unlike Hyuna, Sohyun was the calmer and easy going person. She didn’t like trouble and stayed out of it most of the time. Whenever Jayla needed peace from everything, including her best friend, she would call Sohyun and just stay at her place for as long as needed.

Jayla was really glad over her brother’s relationship and if those two ever decided to break up, she would scold her brother instead of his girlfriend.

Almost an hour and a half later, they arrived home and their parents were lost for words from the nice surprise. They welcomed them wholeheartedly and having the amazing and one of a kind mother that the siblings had, she immediately started preparing a huge dinner.

“What a nice surprise my son,” Jayla’s father, Jaewoon, clapped her brother on his back a few times, “And even bringing your sister and girlfriend with you. Ahh, I’m a happy man to have my kids gathered here.”

“You should come and visit more often!” their mother’s voice was heard from the kitchen.

“I will go and help Mrs. Yoo a little bit,” Sohyun jumped up from the couch and headed towards the kitchen.

Jaewoon smiled at this future daughter-in-law and looked at Jayla to throw her a teasing look.

“What?” she watched him with suspicious eyes.

Her father laughed and shook his head, “You will never change. It’s like I have two sons instead of a son and a daughter.”

“In other words go and help mom with the food,” Youngjae explained.

“Alright, alright,” Jayla let out a small sigh as she followed after Sohyun.

She couldn’t help but smile a little bit at the situation because it reminded her of the good old times when everyone still lived at home. It was like a carefree zone and time.

When she entered the room where her mother was, the familiar scent of homemade food made water in hunger. She walked up to the two and asked if she could help them with anything.

“You can set the table if you want,” Jayla’s mother, Ara, suggested while stirring the delicious soup on the stove.

“Need some help?” asked Sohyun while cutting the freshly baked bread that her mother prepared before they arrived.

“Nah, I can do that on my own… I think?” Jayla laughed while taking out the dishes.

“So Jayla, how is it going in Seoul city?” her mother asked curiously as she finished preparing the food and joined Jayla in setting the table.

“Good as usual.”

“Ah, that’s good. How is Himchan doing?”

Jayla looked up to meet eyes with Sohyun, who immediately got the message not to say a word about anything that happened the past six months.

“He is good too,” Jayla informed carefully.

“Why didn’t he come too?” Ara looked up and tilted her head to the side.

“I don’t know. I didn’t really invite him to come with us.”

“Jay!”

“In my defense mom, Youngjae and I planned on coming here alone but then he changed his mind and asked So to come with us.”

“Oh, I see then. But we can still call him to come over?”

We could, but I don’t want to, thought Jayla in her mind. After all, there was a purpose on coming home for a weekend. Besides, Himchan never asked to come with them.

“I don’t know mom. He is really tired, being the workaholic he is. He should rest a little bit.”

Sohyun kept on preparing the side dishes in silence while Ara brought some glasses for the juice. Once she put everything down on the table, she rested her hands on her hips and eyed her daughter.

“There is something wrong in the tone of your voice,” she pointed out.

“What?” Jayla looked up but tried to hide the shock in her eyes.

“Jayla, you’re my daughter and I can sense when something isn’t how it should be. Is everything alright between you and Himchan?”

Knowing that she couldn’t pretend like her mother was totally wrong, Jayla decided to go along but not tell the most important parts.

“Well… You know we had a few smaller fights. Just like regular couples. It’s nothing big mom, really.”

Sohyun looked up but when she saw Jayla’s warning eyes, she looked down again and prayed to God that Ara wouldn’t ask her anything.

“Are you sure? Do you want me to talk to him?”

“No! I’m totally sure. Besides we are good now. Those fights are just temporary, nothing to worry about,” Jayla smiled weakly as she finished off the table and walked over to the door to call her father and brother.

Her mother only nodded because she knew that, that was everything she could get out of her daughter. Moreover, if Jayla told her not to worry, she trusted her daughter in her words and obeyed.

“Food is ready!” Jayla shouted although the living room was located right across from the kitchen.

“Thank God!” Youngjae shouted in response which made the whole family laugh.

Two nights and three days of having some quality time with the family really did went by faster than Jayla wanted it. But, life called back and needed to be taken care off.
When everyone said their goodbyes, Jayla drove off towards the capital where her boyfriend and best friend waited for her.

The drive home was short and quick and before she even knew it, Jayla dropped off Youngjae and Sohyun and arrived home where Himchan welcomed her with the warmest smile on his face.

“Hey baby,” he pulled her into a very tight and strong hug before lifting up her head and kissing her passionately to the point where both of them were breathless and had to break the kiss for some air.

“Hi,” Jayla whispered as she looked at the man that never failed to show his love for her, and she would lie if she said that she didn’t enjoy it.

“How have you been?” he whispered back as he guided her towards their living room.

“Fine, I guess. But I missed you,” she confessed before her brain even processed the fact. And it was true. She did miss him and his strong embrace and intoxicating natural scent that she loved.

“Good, because I missed you too,” he smiled and connected their lips without any warning.

There is no better thing than going to the gym in the morning and then taking a nice cold shower afterwards. That was a perfect way of waking up and preparing yourself for the rest of the day. At least in Jayla’s opinion.

When she woke up, she grabbed her workout clothes, jumped into her car and headed towards her favorite gym. The sun was already up and she could already tell that it would be a nice day.

Before she entered the building where people got healthier and stronger, she made sure to text Himchan and tell him where she was, in case he needed anything when he woke up.

Once she entered the hall, her ears were immediately greeted by upbeat songs that helped everyone during their workout sessions, and in the background she could hear people already running on the treadmills.

Jayla picked up her purse to get her card that allowed her to enter the gym. She pulled the plastic card through the scanner but it refused to let her in. With a confused expression on her face, she tried one more time but the same thing happened again.

“Why?” she asked herself and tried a few more times before losing her patience and looking towards the reception where no one was in sight. “Hello?” she called after someone that could help her. “Excuse me, I need some help!”

There was still no answer and just when she prepared herself to call after Zelo, one of the guys who worked there, she was greeted by a dark voice that came out of the staff room that was located next to the reception.

“It’s okay, I’m coming! The scanner has been causing problems the whole morning lo-“

Both Jayla and the awaited worker stopped in their track once they met eyes with each other. It was like everything around them turned motionless just like both of them were lost for words.

His once very bright smile that Jayla saw just a few days ago, vanished and was replaced by an expressionless face with eyes that couldn’t leave her face.
What was more shocking is that the guy in front of Jayla shouldn’t be at a job like this because he was clearly into more different things than a gym.

He was none other than Nam.
