That Was That

Wrapped Around Your Finger

The rest of the night had been a blur, Suho had left abruptly and Kai was so busy dancing that he didn’t even remember you were there. You had driven home exhausted, even though you didn’t dance at all. Late that night, you wondered if this was it for you. A sappy existence, always being the one watching, never having fun with the rest. The week continued with school- boring as usual. Kai was just as friendly and Suho was becoming warmer towards you. You wondered why- and next Saturday you found out.

In the morning you woke up with a start, realizing the phone was ringing. You turned in your bed and almost fell on the floor, and scrambling to the door, went to the phone jack in the wall. It wasn’t there.

“Who is this?” Your mother’s voice said from the family room, sparking some interest.

“Suho? Who’s that?” She grumbled rudely. Your mouth opened in shock and you scrambled into the family room, ignoring your mother and wrenching the phone from her grasp. You ran back into your bedroom before your mother could say anything.

Panting, you brought the phone up to your ear. “Hello?” You breathed, smothering your hair from your face in attempt to look presentable, even though he wasn’t even there.

“Hey Summer.” Suho purred suavely, and your heart skipped a beat.

“H-hi.” You breathed again, grasping the phone. This was the first time he had ever called you.

“Listen- Kai got drunk last night and he crashed at my house. I need you to help me bring him home before his parents find out. Can you do that?”

Your heart sank and you felt like curling up in a ball and crying. He didn’t want to spend the day with you or anything- just get miserable, drunk Kai home before his rep was ruined. You sighed.

“I-I-“ You said, trying to say no. But you just couldn’t. “Yeah sure. Where do you live?”

Fifteen minutes later you pulled into Suho’s driveway. Surprisingly modest, the house lay in an expansive, picturesque yard with white picket fences and the whole nine-yards. You sighed as you got out of the car, examining the perfect grass and the perfectly trimmed bushes. You stumbled up the steps and marveled at the beautiful flower pots as you rang the doorbell.

The door opened, revealing a perfect-as-usual Suho and a beautiful interior.

He grinned, and your heart practically stopped. “Welcome to my humble abode,” he said, visibly leaning closer and - what looked like- smelling you. You smiled awkwardly and walked inside, noticing that he held the door for you instead of making you walk under his arm like Kai did.

There was one thing it wasn’t- and that was humble.

Your humble abode?”  You said incredulously.

He grinned seductively, and you stepped farther into the house backwards, feeling like a trapped animal. Stepping a little too close to you, he leaned in and whispered in your ear, his hand brushing against your own. “That’s right.” He said, breath tickling your ear and making your stomach feel warm. Your hand felt like it had been electrocuted. You smiled again awkwardly, trying not to be rude, when really, you wanted to run out of the house screaming- who cared about Kai- he could deal with this cocky bastard on his own. You were a helpless girl.

“Uhmm.” You said, stepping away from him again. The space between you increased and you felt like you could breathe again.

“Come on in, let’s go get Kai.” He said, perking up and acting as if nothing had just happened. You wondered how many girls he had done this to before.

He cocked his head in the direction of the inside, smiling cutely,

and you bowed your head, walking ahead of him. You weren’t sure why though, because he could probably attack you from behind and you’d be toast.

You stumbled around awkwardly, not even taking in the beautiful house because you had no idea where to go. Finally Suho stepped in front of you with a chuckle and led you to a room filled with plush couches. A sleeping Kai was laying on one of them.

Feeling in control again, you wanted to ask why he wanted you to help him when he could clearly handle the job on his own, but a different question came out of your mouth.

“Why do you live here alone?” You stuttered.

Suho turned, smiling at you. Anxiety creeped up your stomach and you wondered why he was being so nice.

“My parents live too far from the school, so they bought me this house so I could get there easily. I didn’t just call you here to pick up Kai though.” He said.

Your eyes widened, and you wondered how he read your mind like that. In reply, Suho laughed lightheartedly, and the world went in slow-motion for a couple seconds. All you could see was his beautiful smile, his laugh sounding like music. He looked like he had his own little secret, and you were dying to know what it was. You felt like you would do anything to figure it out, and it looked like he knew that too. How did he have so much control over your emotions?

You wanted to ask what he meant, but he walked to the couch with Kai, shaking him not-too-gently to wake him. Kai sputtered and you could practically smell the alcohol all the way from where you were standing. How had he even gotten his hands on alcohol anyways?

“Wha-whas going on?” Kai grumbled, getting up and rubbing his eyes.

You couldn’t help but laugh, and Kai looked up at you, squinting to see you from your perch in the kitchen. It wasn’t even dark.

“Oh hi Summer.” He said nonchalantly, grabbing his jacket and tripping over the coffee table. He would have smashed his head on the fireplace if Suho hadn’t caught him.

You wanted to help out but you were afraid Kai might pull something in this drunken state, so you stayed a few feet away as Suho dragged Kai to the garage. He cocked his head at the door, grunting under the weight of Kai, and you opened the door hastily as Kai hummed a song under his breath.

Your eyes widened and you could feel Suho’s pride radiate through your back as you walked into the garage, taking care not to touch the multi-million-dollar Lamborghini sitting in the garage.

You gulped, running your hands against your legs as Suho threw Kai carelessly in the trunk and opened the driver’s door. The garage door pulled up smoothly and the light form outdoors shined like a spotlight. You squinted uncomfortably, inching closer to the outside, seeing your car parked in the driveway. This entire situation was foreign to you, and you longed to jump in your car and speed away.

“Well…” You said quickly. “I better be going.”

“Wait.” Suho said, ignoring the Kai and walking closer to you. You practically squirmed with discomfort.

“The reason why I asked you to come...” He said, only a couple of inches away from you now. You looked into his eyes shyly as he took a deep breath, trying to get his courage obviously.

You couldn’t help but smile, and that gave you the confidence to get through the rest of the conversation.

“I-I wanted to do something with you-“He said, still trying to finish his sentence, but that was all the conformation you needed. Your heart soared, and you felt like doing a little jig, but you stood in place, waiting for him to finish.

“Uhh. I mean, I wanted to take you somewhere- ugh. I mean- will you please go to lunch with me?” He finally said.

You smiled, turning on your heel confidently. You walked to your car and called over your shoulder- “Sure- where to?” And that was that- that was the beginning.
