Queer & Proud

Over the last half an hour, breathing became an extremely hard task for Byun Baekhyun. All he could focus on was remembering how to breathe.

Breathe in, Breathe out. Don’t look at Chanyeol. Look at the floor instead. Block your nose, because he smells like ice cream and holy that is not a good thing right now. Ignore his warm hand around yours. Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. For gods sake, for your own sanity, just ignore.

Baekhyun repeated over and over again in his head, looking at anything but the tall male besides him. Chanyeol’s broad shoulder was brushing against his neck and made him realize how tall Chanyeol really was, making the tiny amount of self-worth he had left disappear completely.

Why the does he have to so goddamn perfect.

Chanyeol was like the definition of what Baekhyun was not: he was hard-working, intelligent, tall, good looking, suave, muscular, charming, and definitely not awkward. And all these qualities made Baekhyun want to hide in a hole and never come out.

“I’m guessing you’re not hungry with all the ice cream you stuffed yourself with,” Chanyeol spoke with a large grin, “so that narrows down our options quite a bit. Do you want to just go to the mall or something? I needed to grab some clothes anyways.”

Park Chanyeol just had to make things harder for him.

“Shopping. Yeah, sounds cool,” Baekhyun replied, nodding slowly and trying to keep his cool. He was dying to jump up and down in excitement because no one ever willingly went shopping with him, and he didn’t want to remember the last time he tried dragging Jongin to the mall and ended up getting kicked out by the guards.

“Great,” Chanyeol replied, and the two stared at each other with stupid grins - Chanyeol’s happy and Baekhyun’s out of anxiety - before they made their way to the mall. It was a relatively small one, with only two floors worth of stores and a small arcade in the basement. However, it contained all things teenagers needed at their age, and Baekhyun was more than satisfied that someone actually offered to go shop with him. It was probably the first time since he got stuck with his useless friends.

“Hey Baek,” Chanyeol called out as he dragged the smaller boy with him to a hat shop by the entrance. “This would look so good on you.”

Chanyeol held out a dark navy hat with the word Cutie stitched on it. He guffawed at the affronted look Baekhyun had on.

“I’m not cute,” Baekhyun grumbled. Chanyeol laughed harder at this before stepping closer and putting it on Baekhyun’s head, then taking a step back to take a better look.

“Yup. Definitely suits you. I think I’m going to buy that for you.”

Baekhyun took a step back and crossed his arms, huffing in exasperation. But it was Park Chanyeol in front of him, and Baekhyun wasn’t ready to stop Chanyeol from getting what he wanted.

“Fine, but I’m going to get you one too.”

“Oh?” Chanyeol followed Baekhyun as he walked around, trying to find an appropriate hat for Chanyeol. He finally found one and with a sly grin, he picked it up and spun it around for Chanyeol to see.

Sweetie?” Chanyeol repeated, a look of puzzlement on his face. Baekhyun nodded and smiled.

“Since you sell ice cream and stuff. I just thought it was appropriate.”

“But Sweetie? Baek, if Kyungsoo saw this, he would never let it go.”

“Chanyeol. If Jongin saw Cutie, I’m afraid I would end up killing him by the end of the week.”

“So Cutie and Sweetie huh?” Chanyeol chuckled as he picked up both hats and looked at them. “God, this is cheesy.”

“You started it!” Baekhyun pointed out before snatching away Chanyeol’s hat and paying for it. Chanyeol did the same with Baekhyun’s, and after they left the store they put on their respective hats.

“I bet we look like a couple now,” Chanyeol teased, and Baekhyun felt his finally calm cheeks redden at the words. He pulled the hat down as to cover his blushing face.

“Yeah, whatever,” he mumbled quietly, ignoring a soft chuckle coming from Chanyeol’s direction. Suddenly, Chanyeol bent over and grabbed Baekhyun’s hand. Baekhyun’s head snapped up and stared at the taller in complete surprise.

“Just in case you get scared again,” Chanyeol sent a playful wink to Baekhyun, who simply gaped and had a hard time getting his stupid brain to start functioning again.

Chanyeol tightened his grip, and Baekhyun’s already tiny hands were completely covered by Chanyeol’s large ones as the two boys moved on to their next destination. Chanyeol said something about buying some clothes for the fall season, and the previously flustered Baekhyun became excited at the chance to check out some new clothing.

Chanyeol quickly picked out a couple of clothes and slung them over his arms. He turned around to speak to an unusually quiet Baekhyun, but when he saw that the small boy was nowhere to be seen, his eyes widened and he cursed at himself for letting go of his hand.

“Baekhyun?” Chanyeol called out, but only a few strangers’ heads turned around to look at him.

Chanyeol scanned the whole store in panic and finally saw a small head bob up and down from the racket at the far end of the store. Sighing in relief, he quickly ran over.

“Yah, Byun Baekhyun!” Chanyeol yelled. Baekhyun spun around in shock and when he saw the worried look on Chanyeol’s face, his eyes drooped down in guilt.

“Oh my god you surprised me! You were gone,” Chanyeol breathed out and quickly grabbed Baekhyun’s hand once more. “Don’t do that again.”

“S-sorry. I was checking out some clothes and I get really carried away with shopping. I didn’t mean to worry you,” Baekhyun murmured, hoping Chanyeol wouldn’t get too angry with him. This was exactly why none of his friends liked to go shopping with him. He took too much time, always got carried away, and usually ended up getting lost and resulted in his friends running around and looking at him panic.

“It’s fine. Just be careful, alright?”

Baekhyun nodded silently and followed Chanyeol to the cashier. After they payed for their respective clothes, Chanyeol pulled Baekhyun closer to his side in fear of losing him again.

“I guess we could go check out the arcade,” Chanyeol said before glancing at his phone, “it’s getting pretty late. I think we can manage to fit in a couple of games before we head back to school. Does that sound good?”

“Awesome,” Baekhyun smiled back. Chanyeol’s grin widened and he took off Baekhyun’s hat, ruffled his already messy hair, and put the hat back on.

“Kyungsoo’s going to kill me for doing this,” Chanyeol laughed, and Baekhyun’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“He told me to stay away from you. He has this delusional idea in his head that Jongin and all of his friends are bad influences, including you.”

Baekhyun’s eyes widened. “But you’re still hanging out with me?”

Chanyeol cracked a smile. “Of course. I like you. Why wouldn’t I?”

“Oh,” Baekhyun froze as he simply gawked back at Chanyeol’s smiling face. “Oh. That’s good. I-I like you too, I guess.”

“I know you do.”

Chanyeol stuffed his phone back into his pocket, laughed out loud at the dazed look on Baekhyun’s face, before going downstairs to the basement. The thumping sound of the games and the shouting from the kids running around finally shook Baekhyun’s out of his state.

“Here,” Chanyeol said as he through a plastic gun in Baekhyun’s direction. Baekhyun catched it in time before it could hit him in the face and stared at the screen in front of him.

“You’ve tried it before?” Chanyeol asked as he inserted the coins needed and cocked the gun. Baekhyun shook his head before shuffling next to Chanyeol and following his actions.

“Here, let me help you,” Chanyeol said. He leaned over, placing his chin on top of Baekhyun’s shoulders as his arms grabbed Baekhyun’s gun and pressed the trigger. Baekhyun gulped loudly and he tried his best to not focus on the fact that Chanyeol’s face was right next to his.

Kill. Me. Now.

“I-I think I got it. Thanks,” Baekhyun stuttered. Chanyeol grinned and Baekhyun could see his eyes boring into Baekhyun’s blushing face.

“Are you sure? I’m perfectly okay with helping you through the first round.”

“Nope. I’m fine. I’m sure.”

“If you say so.”

Chanyeol slowly retreated his hands and stepped back. Baekhyun took a shaky breath as Chanyeol cocked his own gun and aimed it at the screen.

*Bang* Chanyeol managed to hit a zombie on the first try, unlike Baekhyun who was aiming at empty space since the beginning. Baekhyun sighed in frustration, cocking his gun once more pointing it at an upcoming zombie.

Without hesitation, he quickly pressed the trigger and blinked slowly as the bullet flew forward and knocked the zombie’s head off. Chanyeol gaped at him, his own gun frozen in midair.

“That.....that was amazing,” Chanyeol muttered, “even I can’t do that. Are you sure you never tried this before?”

“Nope. Never,” Baekhyun quickly answered as he reloaded his gun. Bull, he thought as he cringed inwardly. The arcade was a regular stop for him and his friends, and Baekhyun had played his game so much he couldn’t even remember how many times exactly. Jongin and Baekhyun had monthly competitions to see who was the ultimate winner, and even Jongin had to admit that Baekhyun was unbeatable. Groups of teenagers huddled around this machine to see Baekhyun play whenever he came over, because no one could stop staring as Baekhyun killed and shot at everything moving with perfect accuracy and ease.

And it also wasn’t a surprise that the top 10 high scores were all Baekhyun’s doing.

“Baekhyun. That was really impressive for a first timer,” Chanyeol commented as he shot at another zombie. Baekhyun laughed awkwardly before he purposefully aimed at a wooden box and watched it as it exploded into pieces.

“I guess I just got lucky,” he shrugged.

However, slowly, Baekhyun started to realize that maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. The arcade was his domain after all, and almost everyone here recognized him as the genius player who was currently losing to some guy they never saw before with a rather pathetic score at that. Baekhyun was bound to gain attention.

“Byun Baekhyun?”

Baekhyun’s head snapped back and saw three guys staring at him with equally shocked expressions.

Oh .

The three guys were regulars at the arcade, and played with Baekhyun numerous times only to be beaten every single time. They, Baekhyun had discovered a long time ago, were sore losers and not the kind of people Baekhyun wanted to see this very moment.

Taking a deep breath and ignoring Chanyeol’s inquisitive eyes, he put on a fake smile.

“Hey guys!” Baekhyun exclaimed. “What are you guys doing here?”

One of the guys quirked an eyebrow, staring at Baekhyun in exasperation.

“What am I doing here? This is the ing arcade - of course I’m here. I think the more appropriate question is why the are you losing to this guy?”

Chanyeol pointed at himself when three pairs of eyes switched over to him. “Me?”

Soon enough, a large audience surrounded the five, watching with amusement and surprise as Baekhyun fumbled nervously. The usually cocky, confident guy they knew him to be was gone and now Baekhyun looked like a fifth grade girl on a first date with her long term crush.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you guys are talking about. This is the first time I’ve been here and I-”

The three guys blinked slowly at Baekhyun’s words and burst out laughing in unison. The audience was also laughing hysterically, obvlious to the look of frustration crossing Baekhyun’s eyes and a very confused Chanyeol.

“First time you’ve been here? Good lord, what happened to the number one champion who beats everyone else’s -”

Baekhyun’s face paled and before the smirking guy could say anything further, he jumped forward and covered the guy’s mouth with his hand. Although Baekhyun was much shorter, the deadly glare he was sending to the guy was enough to get him to stop talking.

“I suggest you shut that mouth of yours before I rip it out myself,” Baekhyun growled quietly so Chanyeol wouldn’t be able to hear.

“My, my, aren’t you a y one tonight,” the guy commented with a sly grin as Baekhyun slowly pulled away while stealing worried glances in Chanyeol’s direction. “Oh, I see what this is. Is he your boyfriend?”

“No!” Baekhyun yelled, surprising both Chanyeol and the audience. “We-we’re just friends. And Chanyeol was teaching me how to play because I’ve never played it before.

The audience howled once more at this and Baekhyun gave them all a menacing glare, shutting them up immediately.

“Alright,” the guy held out his hand in defeat and stepped back. “I’ll stop. But remember this is going to come and bite you in the back.”

Baekhyun’s eyes narrowed threateningly as the guy winked playfully in his direction before walking towards Chanyeol, who hadn’t moved from his spot during the whole time. The guy picked up Baekhyun’s gun from the floor and handed it to Chanyeol, who stared at him in bewilderment.

“Teach Baekhyun a lot, will you? He’s still a bit rusty,” the guy snickered before walking back to Baekhyun and placing a hand on his shoulder.

“Have fun amateur.”

The guy ignored Baekhyun’s biting gaze as he nodded at the two other guys and walked out of the arcade. The audience slowly moved away, leaving Baekhyun to turn around and stare awkwardly at Chanyeol.

“What just happened?” Chanyeol asked as he stared at Baekhyun and then at the gun in his hands. “Something just happened. I’m so freaking confused right now.”

Baekhyun sighed and walked over, taking the gun from Chanyeol’s hands and quickly reloading it. He clicked the play button on the game machine before directing his gun on a zombie running towards him. He pressed the trigger with ease and watched in satisfaction as the zombie burst into pieces.

“Let's just say this may not be my first time playing this game,” Baekhyun muttered and looked at Chanyeol with an uneasy look.

“You lied?” Chanyeol couldn’t hide the look of hurt that flashed in his eyes. “Why would you do that?”

“I-it’s just that I spend way too much time playing here in the arcade and I’m not exactly proud of it. I thought you might find it lame.”

Lame?” Chanyeol repeated in disbelief, “Baekhyun, that shot was probably the coolest thing I have ever seen. How could I find that lame?”

Baekhyun blinked in surprise. “You think I’m cool?”

“I think you’re awesome!”

Baekhyun’s face heated up as Chanyeol beamed down at him. He could hear snickering from a few guys around them. He cleared his throat, tore his gaze away from Chanyeol, and pointed his gun at the screen again.

“That’s great then. Let’s get started.”

After 30 minutes of intense gaming, both Baekhyun and Chanyeol put down their guns and chortled at the looks of disbelief sent in their direction. Although Baekhyun’s extremely high score was expected, Chanyeol, who happened to be quite good at the game himself, was only a few points lower than Baekhyun. The sum of their score flashed brightly at the screen, attracting the attention of everyone in the arcade.

“53 million?!” one voice exclaimed, “dude, is that even freaking possible?”

“That’s got to be the new high score by at least 6 million!”

“Holy , are they even human?’

Baekhyun and Chanyeol grinned at each other. They quickly put on their respective hats and turned around, bowing slightly at the audience.

“Excuse us,” Chanyeol said loudly before grabbing Baekhyun’s hand, startling the shorter boy, and pushed past the large crowd to head out. Baekhyun turned around and smirked at the guy from before, who simply snorted and stuck out his middle finger.

“That was the best night I’ve had in a very long time,” Chanyeol said as they exited the mall, “thanks Baekhyun.”

Baekhyun’s cocky attitude was stripped off the moment he was alone with Chanyeol and had now returned to his fidgety, nervous self.

“I had a lot of fun too,” he replied as he stared at Chanyeol’s hands around his.

“We should do it again some time,” Chanyeol laughed, “without the horror movie part. That was awful.”

Baekhyun let out a small sound as if being strangled. “Y-yeah. Definitely.”

They walked in comfortable silence, Chanyeol humming a quiet tune and Baekhyun trying to keep himself from staring at Chanyeol’s beautiful face. It was exactly like the moment a few hours back, and Baekhyun couldn’t help but feel a bit of deja vu as breathing became harder once more.

Chanyeol, being the gentleman he was, walked Baekhyun to his room. He slowly let go of Baekhyun’s hand and the shorter couldn’t help but frown slightly at the sudden loss of warmth.

“Goodnight Baekhyun,” Chanyeol whispered quietly. The dormitory corridor was dark with only a couple of flickering lights as it was pretty late at night. Baekhyun nodded, smiled back, and was about to turn around and open the door when he was pulled back and felt Chanyeol grab his neck. His eyes widened and he didn’t have time to react as Chanyeol bent over and placed a soft kiss on his forehead.

Chanyeol slowly stepped back and released Baekhyun, whose eyes were widened to an abnormally large size and was currently frozen in place. Chuckling, he opened the door for Baekhyun and leaned against the wall.

“Sweet dreams,” Chanyeol said. Baekhyun gawked at Chanyeol as the taller boy smiled warmly at him before walking to his own room. Baekhyun watched him as he disappeared from view in complete shock.

Baekhyun finally managed to walk into his room and closed the door behind him. The room was completely dark and by the soft snoring coming from the far end of the room, he knew his roommate was fast asleep. Baekhyun’s legs gave out and he slumped to the ground.

“Oh my god,” he muttered with a shaky breath, “I am so screwed.”

Chapter 42: I first read this story 5 years ago. I read it about a week after the Act 2 Finale chapter had been posted, and I completed it within a few days. And ever since then, I have been checking over and over and over again for the past 5 years to see if it has updated. Normally, if a fic hasn't updated in a year, I give up on it, but not this one. This fic is SO GOOD, that I have continuously checked for an update on it for the past 5 years. Sadly, the day has not come, but I will continue to check, because it is just THAT GOOD.
