The Kims tried to persuade her to stay for dinner, but she wanted to be home before it grew dark.
“See you tomorrow!” Danji waved. Smiling contendly, she headed back home. *That was a good day. It was nice to spend time with Minyoung.* Her thoughts drifted to Luhan, and concern crossed her face. *I hope he’s okay. About twelve more hours and the full moon will be gone.* Danji raised her eyes to the sky and pouted. *Go away, full moon. You’re causing my boyfriend pain and misery.*
Suddenly, she heard a pained cry.
Danji froze. Her hearing grew acute, and she stayed silent.
The cry came again, louder this time.
*Is that a wolf? No, I don’t think so.*
Then her blood ran cold.
*Is it…a coyote?* She gulped in dread.
Danji was about to turn and dash back to Minyoung’s home when she heard the cry again. It wasn’t an angry cry. It was more of an anguished cry for help.
Danji hesitated. She fought between her mind and heart.
Go. Someone needs your help.
Are you crazy? What if it’s a coyote?
So? What if it is? He sounds troubled. Go see if he needs aid.
No, absolutely not. If Luhan found out, he would become absolutely hysterical.
You are your own woman. You don’t need permission from him to do anything, despite the fact that he’s your mate.
Danji sighed. Her merciful heart won this one.
*All right. Let’s see what is going on.* She took a deep breath and boldly marched into the forest. She moved towards the whimpers.
The noise grew closer. Then she heard the cry nearby and jerked her head around.
There, between lush bushes and trees, was a black coyote.
Danji froze. *I knew it. I should have listened to my brain.*
Before Danji could run away, the coyote cried miserably. She took a peek and saw that his leg was trapped in an animal trap. One of his hind legs was caught between the jagged teeth of the trap. Danji couldn’t help but softened. She had a kind heart that could not overlook anyone in need of her help, even a nemesis.
Danji moved towards him.
The coyote heard her coming and snapped its head towards her. When he saw who it was, his eyes grew wide. *No. I shouldn’t have gotten caught by her! Damn it! What is she doing here?!*
Danji carefully approached him. Her eyes flitted to his bleeding leg. “It looks like you need help.” She quietly spoke.
The coyote growled, but his growl was weak because of his throbbing leg.
“Stay still. I’ll try to get you out.” Danji mumbled.
The coyote stared at her in shock.
She wanted to help him? But why?
His pack had tried to murder her on various occasions. So why would she save his life?
Danji bent down and slowly reached out. The coyote came back to focus. Eyes red, he snarled and tried to bite her hand.
Danji withdrew her hand and stared at him with fright.
The coyote grew satisfied by the look of fear on her face. *That’s right. Be scared. Be disgusted. Go. Leave me alone.*
But what shocked him was that she grew angry.
“How dare you! I’m trying to help you!”
He snorted and looked away with a grimace.
Danji furrowed her eyebrows in determination. Something in her wouldn’t allow her to give up so easily. “Stay still.” Danji reached forward again. The coyote barked irritably and snapped its jaws. She slapped its nose. He flinched and blinked in surprise.
Danji looked at her hand in awe. *Did I just hit a coyote? I must be either very brave or very stupid.* She met eyes with the coyote and suddenly grew discomfited. “Okay, look, let me just help you, okay? There’s no one out here who will get you out of this quandary. Just put aside your hatred for me for like, two seconds, and you can go on your way.”
Danji gave him a warning look and moved closer. The coyote stared at her in astonishment. He wrinkled his nose in distaste and barred his pointed teeth. Danji focused on getting his leg out of the trap. *How does this contraption work?* She bit her bottom lip and tugged on one of the ends.
It opened at first but quickly snapped back close.
The coyote snarled in pain. H
