CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Taekwoon opens his eyes and groans, the sudden brightness irritating his eyes. He rubs the sleep out of his eyes and sits up. When his eyes finally adjust to the brightness, he looks around and notices that he’s in his room. The room looked the same as always, not an item out of place. He goes out of bed and was about to make his way towards the bathroom when he suddenly realizes how quiet it was. Thinking it was probably because the others were still asleep, he walks towards the bathroom when something catches his attention.

It was a picture of him and a few other boys. He could recognize Wonshik and Hongbin, still looking the same although a bit younger. The others boys, however, he couldn’t remember. He closes his eyes and tries hard to remember. Surely, if they were in the picture and smiling along with the others, he knew them. He did. Didn’t he?

“Taekwoon-hyung,” Wonshik’s voice breaks Taekwoon’s thoughts as the younger boy enters the room. Taekwoon barely acknowledges Wonshik’s presence before returning his attention to the picture. “The administration’s calling us,” he says. That alone makes Taekwoon raise his guard. He keeps the picture away and nods.

“I’ll go out in a bit,” he says before entering the bathroom. He hears Wonshik’s faint voice before the door opens and closes. Taekwoon sighs as he stares at his reflection. He looked the same. There was nothing different. Then why does he feel empty? As if a huge part of him was taken from him. “This is stupid,” he mutters. Realizing it was useless to dwell on it longer, he enters the shower and allows the warm water wash away all of his thoughts.

In a matter of minutes, Taekwoon, Wonshik and Hongbin were sitting behind a long table in what they called ‘briefing room.’ It was where they got their ‘assignments.’ From who? They can’t tell. The room was dark and the only light came from the lamp hanging above but even that wasn’t enough to fully illuminate the room.

They hear some shuffling before three photos were thrown in front of them. Taekwoon stiffens, recognizing the boys as the boys in the picture, although a bit older. “These people,” the voice says and Taekwoon tenses. “These boys are traitors to our program. Your assignment this time will be a bit different and will also take a bit longer,” the voice pauses and a case is placed on the table.

“The administration wants you to live among these people. Gain their trust and when you do, we want you to inject this to them,” he opens the case, gloved hand moving swiftly. Inside the case were three syringes. “The serum will take a while before it fully takes effect. During this time, we want you to bring them back here. It doesn’t matter how long you take as long as you get it done,”

“Where are we going this time?” Hongbin asks. Taekwoon looks at the younger boy. He seemed the same but he also seemed different at the same time. Taekwoon couldn’t exactly pinpoint what was different but he was sure there was something. Even Wonshik seemed different.

“We found out that the boys are currently residing in an apartment in the lower part of Seoul. We also discovered that he-,” a gloved hand points to the center picture. “Is currently working in a bakery during the day and a grocery at night. The two boys are probably inside the apartment all the time,”

The voice pauses before speaking again. “You will go undercover this time. Taekwoon, you’ll be working in the bakery while Wonshik and Hongbin will be in the grocery. You will keep a close eye on him,” he points at the male once again.

Wonshik frowns. “What about the other two? Why are we only keeping an eye on him? Shouldn’t we be keeping an equal eye on the three of them?” Wonshik asks. Even Taekwoon questioned why they were only keeping an eye on one of the boys.

“Out of the three of them, this boy is the most dangerous. To be perfectly honest,” he pauses and Taekwoon could almost see the glint on his eyes when he says the next words. “Out of all of you, he’s the strongest. Frankly, it’s not enough for just the three of you to take him down. You’ll have to wait for the perfect opportunity,”

“The strongest...,”

okay, so i wasn't actually planning on updating but the internet was down and i had nothing to do so here it is.
