Not Like IceUnfortunate Event #14 — Nearly Impossible Promise.

She ran across the field, her parents behind her.
A figure loomed among the distance, a lonely one.
The little boy sat there on top of the hill, staring into the emptiness of the field.
The sun was a bright orange, and it reflected his facial features of a cute boy.
She ran over, her young energetic body rushing quickly.
Quickly, she tapped his shoulder.
"What's your name?"
"Huh?"
"You have a name, right? What's your name?"
"I-I don't have one..."
"You don't? Let me give you one!"
"H-Huh?"
"You remind me of a lion. Hehe!"
"Lion...?"
"Lion! Like Leo!"
"L-Leo... waeyo..?"
"Because you're strong."
At that, the boy froze. He stared up at her lively eyes, her warm and eager smile.
Her mind was different, maybe she was crazy.
His parents always called him weak.
Always, weak.
"If that's all, then I'll go now!" She teased, smirking and turning around.
"Ani! P-Please d-don't leave!" The young boy pleaded.
"Well then Leo, let's be chingus, neh?" She asked cheerfully as she extended her hand. Again, he wad shocked at her sudden outbursts.
Shyly, Leo took the hand. "B-But you know.. I'm going to need a Korean name..." He said quietly. "Well that's your parent's job!" She answered as she tugged him up.
"My parents don't love me." He said meekly.
"What do you mean?" The girl asked, facing him.
Leo, however; couldn't answer her.
The rustling of the grass echoed between them. She blinked in confusion. How could his parents not love him?
Perhaps she was still too young.
"Th-They don't love me." He repeated quietly.
"How come?!" She asked, a little angry.
"They said they didn't want me."
"That's a lie." She retorted quickly. Leo stepped back in disbelief. "What do you know?!" He asked, a little offended that she was calling his parents liars.
She turned her back to him and stared out at the emptiness of the field.
"Do they act cold?" She asked quietly, still not daring to look at him.
He nodded. "Neh." He answered with his small voice.
The two children stood there for a few minutes, watching the sun.
"They might be cold, but their hearts are always warm." She added.
"No... they're not." Leo said after her, crossing his arms and looking away.
With a swift move, she turned around and grabbed Leo by both of his shoulders, making him face her and gaze into her eyes.
"They are.
Leo, believe me.
A heart is a heart.
They're always on fire,
no matter whose heart,
no matter who they are,
a murderer or your parents.
Always, always,
believe that they are.
Always treat them kindly,
no matter how cold they act,
because in time,
they'll treat you back.
No matter how cruel,
they will treat you back."
At her words, Leo stared at her, stunned.
The little girl was something, he couldn't think straight.
Suddenly, she removed a hand off his shoulder and held out her pinky.
"If you do that, not everyone will love you, but someone will. Someone always will." She said.
The wind once again blew, rustling the grass again.
Leo looked down at her pinky, still and motionless.
"Promise me." She said and gave him a warm smile.
"People will walk all over me!" Leo replied, nearly yelling into her face.
The young girl smiled even more, nearly an eyesmile.
"Let them walk all over you,
but remember, you hold them up."
