Chapter 3

An Absence of Choice

Joonmyeon had insisted we held a house warming party for me.

I thought it was a nice gesture, to officially welcome me to the building.

But really, who the hell would I invite?

I don’t even know anyone in this part of town. I haven’t even been to school yet.

I guess I could invite Baekhyun and Minseok, but really... I don’t have many friends from high school. Not that I mind.

And don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a complete loner for my school life. But I just took my opportunity to weed out those who were really my friends.

High school just forced me to be close to people I wouldn’t necessarily want to spend hours of my day with.

But Joonmyeon insisted.

And I was a er for his smile.

The party was more like a gathering. I didn’t really think more than 15 people would turn up, but I didn’t really mind.

As much as I was really interested in meeting new people, I knew there would be plenty of opportunities next week when I start my course.

Most of the people coming were Joonmyeon’s friends. Baekhyun was going to bring Tao, but aside from that, my side of the bargain was somewhat lacking.

“You really shouldn’t bother with all of this,” Joonmyeon whined, highlighting the spread of food I was preparing for the guests.

“Well, I don’t want anyone to go hungry. And there’s nothing appealing about a bowl of chips and some lemonade.”

“I wouldn’t mind,” Joonmyeon mumbled back.

“Well, I’d like to make a good impression in front of your friends. And I’d much rather eat this than anything swimming in oil and sugar.”

Yes, I know I was sounding neurotic. I normally try to hide that particular characteristic of mine, but if it meant I would get my point across then so be it.

We were acting more and more like a grumpy married couple with the addition of time we spent with eachother. It was kind of hilarious actually

Joonmyeon just scoffed, muttering a low, “snob” under his breath.

“Hey! I heard that!” I yelled, turning around from the oven to shove my not-so-angelic roommate into the couch in front of him.

“Too far, man. Too far.” He said, smiling and picking himself up from the couch only to head towards his own room.

And I was left, in the kitchen, contemplating whether I’d have enough time to finish the dishes I had planned on making.

I know there would probably be more food than necessary regardless, but I really did want to impress his friends.

And as they say, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

Baekhyun arrived early. As I had expected.

His obnoxious and repetitive ringing of the doorbell was the tell-tale sign of his arrival.

As soon as I opened the door he virtually walked straight through me to get a look at my new apartment.

“Wow, Soo. You really scored!” He announced as he looked around the room in wonder. I couldn’t help but blush a little. It did feel a little extravagant, knowing I landed a great flat, in a great spot, with a great roommate.

“Yeah…”

Before I could say anything more, Baekhyun pulled me close and whispered enthusiastically into my ear, “But, show me Joonmyeon.”

I didn’t like the way Baek objectified my hyung, nor did I like the fact that he would never let down what happened between us.

He is just that kind of person. If you tell him something of even slight dramatic value, he’d hold it to you forever. If he ever found out I liked someone, he’d nudge me or wink or tease me about it, until I managed to convince him I no longer held feelings towards that person.

It was annoying. And more than once I thought it would break our friendship. I’d even begged him to stop, but I know now that was just the way Baek is.

He wasn’t trying to make me embarrassed or insecure. He was just trying to help me, in his enthusiastically ignorant and somewhat inconsiderate way.

I learnt to ignore it.

“Joonmyeon’s in his room, we shouldn’t disturb him.”

As if just on cue, the door to his room swung open revealing the older boy. I’m pretty sure Baekhyun’s jaw dropped.

And as expected, I felt a painful nudge into my side, emanating from Baekhyun’s elbow. I managed to ignore it.

“Hi!” Baekhyun chirped, taking a few steps forward and holding out his hand, “I’m Kyungsoo’s friend, Baekhyun.”

Upon shaking hands, Joonmyeon’s smile appeared, and if it weren’t for Baek’s limitless confidence, he would have been knocked over.

“Nice to meet you Baekhyun, I’m Joonmyeon.”

Their banter continued long after I had given up listening to Baek’s transparent flirting. It really was endless. There wasn’t one occasion that, upon meeting an even slightly attractive boy, Baekhyun wouldn’t try to get into their pants.

Baekhyun was probably the epitome of gay. He was flaming.

And I know I probably can’t talk because I am sort of gay too. I mean, I like men, but women can be just as attractive. I don’t know. I think I am just fussy and most of the time in end up falling for the more masculine of the two.

Somehow I think it makes sense too.  I mean, I’m not the most manly of men. But I can be if I want to.

I like to think that at least.

It wasn’t long before a few of Joonmyeon’s guests had arrived. I had managed to remember a few of their names. Well, the ones that truly stood out at least.

Kris, as he liked to be called was probably the most unforgettable. He absolutely towered over the two of us. In both height and dominance.

Oh yes, he was scary looking alright. But Joonmyeon assured me he wasn’t nearly as frightening as he made you think. He’d been friends with him for years after all.

Like Kris, Yixing was from China and seeing as K.U had a large exchange program with multiple Chinese universities, I wasn’t all that surprised.

I could tell Yixing was a sweet heart and I could see myself getting along well with him. And all of Hyung’s friends for that matter.

“So, Kyungsoo, what are you going to be studying?” Joonmyeon’s friend asked me. I think his name was Jongdae. He seemed really friendly, from what I’d seen at least.

And for a straight guy, Joonmyeon had ridiculously attractive taste.

“I’m going to be doing law,” I replied, feeling quite self-conscious.

“Oh, wow, you must be really smart then!” He stated cheerfully, but with a slight hint of scepticism.

I know what they are probably all thinking.

That I’m only interested in law for the money it makes, or because I was forced into it by my over-achieving family.

But, that’s so far from the truth. I’m not really interested in the individual practices. More humanitarian law.

I want to be able to help people. Large scale. I want to be able to ensure everyone gets the rights they are entitled to.

I don’t care for settling disputes or defending obvious criminals. I wouldn’t have the heart to do something like that. Staying emotionally uninvolved isn’t really my forte.

Let’s just say, I developed a little too much empathy for that.

I smiled with the most sincerity I could muster back at Jongdae.

“No, not really. I just put in enough effort to get in, I’m not that smart,” I assured him.

Jongdae just scoffed, almost unnoticeably, I might add, but it was there. Enough to allow me to make judgements on his personality.

He was mocking me. And I couldn’t quite tell if it were all in humour or it was the kind of mocking that was intentionally victimising.

Either way, I wasn’t sure quite what to think about Jongdae.

But before I could make anymore somewhat predisposed judgements, the front door flew open revealing a new figure to the intimate group. The group I was yet to truly join.

Joonmyeon immediately jumped from his seat on the couch to greet the new member, but as soon as he got to his feet, he slumped straight back down. As if the person wasn’t even worth acknowledging.

The stranger seemed to notice Joonmyeon’s action and pouted, lips all too noticeable.

“Oh. I see how it is,” His creamily rich voice echoed through the now quietened room.

Joonmyeon just chuckled to his comment.

“You guys know Jongin right,” he asked rhetorically, searching around the room for someone to introduce.

Once his eyes landed on me, his face dipped into immediate apology.

“Oh! Kyungsoo,” He looked somewhat embarrassed at forgetting that, even though it was, to be fair, my party, he had forgotten he had to introduce me.

“This is my stupid little brother Jongin,” He gestured at the tanned boy at the door, “Jongin,” His hand flung back towards me, “This is Kyungsoo, my new flatmate.”

“Hi Kyungsoo,” He piped up, looking somewhat shy, “Nice to finally meet you.”

Jongin.

Jongin, like his brother was attractive. Very attractive.

But in totally different ways. Joonmyeon was small and delicate, with pale skin and a gentle smile.

Jongin on the other hand was tall and toned. His attire exuded confidence, but when he spoke he was sensual and mild, quite the opposite to his hyung.

I could see the connection, but only slightly.

I smiled back at him, trying to calm my nerves after analysing him and confirming he was nothing less than mesmerising.

“Yeah… Nice to meet you too.”

He only let his lips quiver up a little to my response.

Only then did I realise I might have come across cold and cynical.

.

Jongin just took a few extra steps into the room, scrunching his face in confusion at my comment.  Ignoring the food on the table I had presented, he went straight to the fridge. He was clearly quite accustomed to this place.

Suddenly Baek caught my eye. He was making some very suggestive expressions and cocking his head towards our balcony.

“Kyungsoo, can I talk to you for a second,” he muttered through his teeth, getting off his seat and brushing his ridiculously tight pants down whilst doing so.

I followed him towards the balcony overlooking the busy streets of Seoul.

“What is it now Bae-”

“Oh my god Soo! Oh my god, he is absolutely gorgeous.”

Not this again.

“Please,” He begged in his irritatingly pleading tone.

“Please what, Baek?” I sighed, already frustrated.

“You have to make a move. He is so cute. I can totally see you two together!”

Well thanks Byun Baekhyun. Thank you for ruining my interest in him. Now, that you actually want me to talk to him, naturally I am just going to have to rebel against your wishes. Thanks a ing lot.

“You. Are. So. Annoying,” I wish there was an off button on him.

“I don’t understand what your problem is. I’m just trying to encourage you to actually do something about your feelings.”

“What feelings?! I just met him for Christ’s sake!” I muttered.

“I saw how you were stripping him with your eyes. I know that look Do Kyungsoo.”

. I need some new friends. Ones that can’t so easily pull me apart.

Baekhyun sighed.

“Look. I’m sorry. I know how much you hate it when I do this. But look at him. He is hot! And you should at least talk to him, because, I know you think your aren’t worth much. But Soo, you are so much better than you give yourself credit for. So just grow some balls, and take the first step for once.”

“Look at you, being all counsellor-y and .”

“…You ruined the moment,” Baekhyun seethed, “I was just trying to be a good Hyung.”

“Well, thanks, I appreciate it. But you’ve got it all wrong. I don’t really have an interest in Jongin. I promise.” I tried to convince him, not really fooling anyone.

“Yep, sure Soo,” he slurred, rolling his eyes as he turned around to go back inside, seemingly grumpy.

He was probably just going to go back to flirting with every single one of Joonmyeon’s friends. He was relentless.

And it was easy enough for him to say that I should just go for it. He wasn’t the one that looked like an awkward toad.

Ok. I was jealous. Probably not the best thing to build my closest friend ship upon. But what was there not to be jealous of.

He was THE Byun Baekhyun.

He was sassy and y, and he was probably one of the most talented people I had ever met. Everybody  adores him.

It was hard sometimes. Just being around him makes me want to hide in a ditch.

He amplifies my insecurities with his perfection. But all the while, he is kind and caring and he is Byun Baekhyun. My best friend.

Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder, awakening me from my stupor. I immediately jumped around to see who it was, holding my hand to my chest to calm my frightened heart.

A deep chuckle followed.

Jongin.

Joonmyeon’s brother was standing before me, with a cheeky grin on his lips, seemingly amused from scaring me half to death.

“Oh my gosh. Jongin, you scared me,” I gasped.

Trying to cease laughing, Jongin spoke, “Sorry… Kyungsoo, was it?”

“Ugh, yeah, but I believe I’m your Hyung,” I replied slyly, my heart somewhat slowing.

“Oh. Well, sorry…Kyungsoo hyung.”

“That’s alright,” I smiled, “What brings you out here?”

Good job Kyungsoo. So far, so good. Just keep the conversation going and don’t stutter.

“Well, I saw you out here and thought you might want a beer,” He noted, pushing the beverage he held in one hand towards me.

I figured he was too young to be drinking himself, but he was in safe hands.  And really, who doesn’t at his age.

“Also, I wanted to clear up what just happened.”

. Did he just hear Baekhyun and my conversation. .

“Um… What?”

My face began turning red and I could feel what Baek like to call ‘owl syndrome’ coming on.

“That!” he pointed towards my face, “Just then, when we met you seemed a bit cold and then you made that face. I was just wondering if I did something wrong…”

“Oh! Oh, no!” I assured him, “No, I didn’t mean it to come out like that! I really was glad to meet you!”

“Oh.”

He began to laugh, his perfect teeth making an appearance, accentuating every one of his beautiful facial features.

I was definitely lying to Baekhyun. I really do take an interest in him. Well, more than an interest.

And as much as I want to rebel from Baek’s suggestions, the gorgeous face in front of me was somewhat overpowering.

As he calmed back to his normal state, Jongin’s eyes began to twinkle in the moonlight.

“I thought it was strange for you to act like that. I mean, I’ve only heard wonderful things about you from Suho.”

“Suho?” I twisted my face in confusion.

“Oh, Joonmyeon. We all call him Suho because he is like our guardian. Always there to make us do the right thing,” he rolled his eyes.

Suho. That was so cute. I could see how that was a perfectly suitable nickname.

“That’s perfect. I might have to call him that myself,” I replied.

“Yeah. I’d like to take credit for that one, thank you very much,” Jongin smirked. Looking y as hell, might I add.

“You really aren’t anything like Joonmyeon are you?” I questioned, quite abruptly.

I wondered how I had been conversing with such ease, but, it was probably drinking my 3rd beer, kindly supplied by Jongin that was helping so much.

“Well, you would know, the two of you seem pretty close.”

The remark took a few seconds to hit. And panic struck.

Had Jongin found out about the little ‘incident’ between Joonmyeon and I?

Crap.

“Oh no!” I was probably being a little too defensive, “We are only as close as roommates should be!”

That was terrible Kyungsoo…

He’s going to think you are a freak.

“Woah!” Jongin cheered, holding up his hands, “Easy tiger. I didn’t mean anything like that.”

I couldn’t help but blush uncontrollably. Just one stuff-up after another. Well done Kyungsoo.

Jongin only smiled. The same sweet and gentle smile that his brother sported.

“You’re really cute, you know Kyungsoo.”

Dammit. Owl syndrome once again.

“Especially when your eyes go wide like that,” He said, with that y smirk, leaning down to plant a short kiss on the corner of my mouth.

I’m pretty sure, with that, my mind turned into a haze of emotions, sending fireworks into the metaphorical sky of my imagination.

It was probably just the alcohol pumping through his youthful veins. Or maybe the Kim boys just had an affinity to kissing small bug faced first years.

But something told me otherwise as I felt a whisper in my ear.

“I’d really like to see you again soon, Kyungsoo.”

And a small piece of paper, later revealing a set of numbers was slipped into my hand as he walked off, leaving me totally stupefied.

A/N:

Finally some Kaisoo!! Hooray! :)

This is pretty much the real start of the fic.

I put in a fair bit about Baekhyun's personality because he will be quite a big part of Kyungsoo's life throughout the story. Please let me know what you think of everyone's characters and if they are believable.

P.S.

Should I include a teeny bit of Hunhan? And do you like the new poster?

Like this story? Give it an Upvote!
Thank you!

There's so much potential for interaction between these two idiots at this point. Kyungsoo is definitely one of those awkward intelligent kids who's always stuck in his head and doesn't realize that others can't understand what he's already experienced. And kai.... Idk I'm not sure if ugh confidence is a facade that comes out when Kyungsoo's around or really him because where did that adorable shy boy go? But LMFAO that is definitely an interesting way to break apart a kiss. Who know that tea could be such a block. I'm so hooked already. I can't wait to read more!!
