I Thought We Were Perfect

“Key… Jonghyuns having a baby.”

Key felt all the air exit his body as if he was punched in the stomach as he Taemin’s words replayed through his thoughts. Granted, Key figured that this would eventually happen and he was okay with that but not this soon; they just broke up. He rolled over to stare at his wall until it became blurry from tears.

‘That’s why he left wasn’t it? I’m wasn’t able to give him his own child so he left me for her.’ Key thought to himself as a image of Victoria flashed in this mind which instantly made his heart crumble into a thousand of pieces. Victoria must have not of been good enough for him because she isn’t his blood. His sadness was soon replaced by rage; he couldn’t wrap his mind around is former lover, nothing that was going on seemed like something he would do but yet, here he was committing these crimes. Tears started to fall from Keys eyes and he couldn’t differentiate if they were tears of sadness or betrayal. He just couldn’t believe it, out of all the people who have hurt him; he didn’t think he would be adding Jonghyun to that list. Letting out a groan of frustration, he rolled into a ball and let the unwanted tears continue to fall.

In the midst of crying, Key didn’t catch the faint sound of his door creeping open then closing or the soft sound of feet shuffling across his carpeted floor. It wasn’t until Key felt the weight difference on his bed did he realize any one was in his room. Rolling over, he spotted his mother watching him with sad eyes. With no words spoken between the two, Key’s mother pulled into a warm hug which instantly cause the tears to dry up. Ever since his fathers passing shortly after kicking Key out and disowning him, she always tried to make up in the time they lost.

“Tell your umma what’s wrong.” She spoke barely above a whisper as if she was afraid to wake someone; old habits die hard he assumed. Key let out a sigh, not a sigh of frustration or annoyance but a sigh of acceptance that that’s how things will always be.

“Taemin called me today. He told that Jonghyun and Jessica are having a baby boy. I know I shouldn’t be upset but that’s the life I pictured for Jonghyun and I and it was ripped from right underneath me and given to someone else. Plus, I’m afraid that since now he has a new family that he’ll forget all about her and that’ll break her heart.” He

finished the sentence just barely above a whisper. Keys mother gently squeezed his fingers in her hand.

“Oh baby, Jonghyun does love both of you but he was unsatisfied. I know that sounds bad but it’s not, he was just living a lie, he’s not really gay.” Key looked at his mom as if she was crazy and proceeded to ask sarcastically how he wasn’t gay.

“Because he wanted to make you happy; he wanted to be in love with you so badly that he started to believe in something that wasn’t true which made slowly made him start resenting his life. Baby, followed you around for 22 years and instantly, I knew that he wasn’t gay.” Key stared off as his mothers words settled in his mind.

“You see baby, love and hate are so similar, there’s just a thin line in between the two, the

only actual difference between the two is the spelling.” Key furrowed his brow.

“How is that?”

“Well for and instance, they both make you act irrationally. Like for an example, with love, majority of people like pretend that love is a fairy tale and that there is going to be a the story book happy ending no matter how many times they deny it. Let me tell you from my first hand experience that in the end, one of you will die while the other has to keep living and there is nothing “happy” about that ending.” Key heard the change in her voice as she tried to hold back the tears threatening to break free while her mind was filled with images of her late husband. Squeezing her hand for reassurance, she continued.

“Life is not a happy ending, life is making the most out of what little we are given out of life and not let it go to waste. You never know when you’ll be taking your last breath and do you really want to waste those precious moments on what could have been when you could be spending them with the people who you hold most dear?” Key shook his head no, in awe of his mother who was radiating self determination which was new for her.

“Good, now dry your tears and go spend time with you daughter.” Key maneuvered out of his bed, dried his eyes and planted a kiss on his mothers cheek before leaving the room. Wandering down the hall to Victoria’s room, he spotted her sitting at her table in one corner of her room, playing tea time with her stuffed animals.

“May I come in?” Victoria let out a squeal, ran up to him, grabbed his arm and dragged him back to the table.

“Umma, umma umma, will you play tea time with me?” Key let a laugh

“Of course baby.” Victoria led the way in playing, putting a big floppy violet hat with a matching flower right in the middle of it on Key’s head along a strewn a fake beads and a fluffy pink boa around his neck. Then dressing herself in her green princess topping it off with her “magic” wand and tiara.

After awhile Victoria was sitting in her closet with a foam cup in her hand while Key laid under her bed, also holding on in his hand; they where playing telephone.

“Umma?” Victoria asked in a whisper.

“Yes baby?”

“Do you love Jinki oppa?” Key looked over at the closet door, wishing it was open so he could look at her.

“No I don’t love him.”

“Why?” Key cleared his throat and thought of an answer that would be suitable for her and that she would except.

“Because I don’t know Jinki oppa well enough to love him but I do like him as a friend.”

“So if you know him you will love him?” Key chuckled at her question.

“Well I don’t know but there’s always a good possibility but I think Jinki oppa might be upset with umma.”

“Why?”

“Because we didn’t spend time with him yesterday.”

“Why?”

“Umma was sad.”

“Why?” Key let out a sigh. How was he supposed to explain to her that the reason why he was sad was because he found out that her father is having a child with another person.

“Will umma know Jinki oppa?” Victoria asked before Key could answer which made it feel like weight just was lifted off his shoulders.

“If you’d like me to, I will.”

“I do! I want you and oppa to get married so I can have a little sister!” Key laughed at his daughters forwardness.

“Alright I’ll do it but umma should go alone so I can apologize for yesterday.”

“Okay!” Key scooted out from underneath the bed and sat on it, making sure the string was still tight.

“Good, now come out here and give your umma a hug.” Victoria flung the closet door open and ran into Key’s arms.

“Squuuuueeze.” They both said as they hugged each other.

“Give me a kiss.” Key said while he still held her in his arms, she tuned and looked at him and gave him a peck on the lips.

“I love you.” he said through a smile.

“I love you umma!” Victoria yelled back while giggling. Key placed her back on the ground and she took off back to her table and got paper and crayons out.

“Alright baby, umma’s going to go get ready.”

“Okay.” she responded without looking. Key watched at she focused on coloring; her hair fell in front of her face before leaving the room. Once he was back in his room, Key pulled out his phone and dialed Jinki’s number. While waiting on someone to answer, Key quickly wracked his mind on why they didn’t show up yesterday.

“Yeoboseyo, Mr. Lee’s office; this is Sulli, how may I help you?”

“Hello Sulli, this is Key… again.”

“Oh Key, I take it you would like to speak to Mr. Lee, correct?” Key nodded in agreement before he remembered that he was on the phone and she couldn’t see him shaking his head yes.

“Oh, um yes I would.”

“Please hold.” classical music filled Key’s ears as he waited for Jinki t answer. He hoped that he wasn’t too mad at him.

“You have some explaining to do.” Jinkis voice filtered into Key’s mind and seemed deeper than what he remembered.

“I know, I’m sorry. Victoria fell ill and I tried to call the office but no one answered.” Key explained as he lied through his teeth. The line fell silent on the other end. Did he not believe him and caught Key red handed? He never was the best at lying. Whatever it was, was making Key uncomfortable.

“I’ll let it slide but I still want to go out on our date.” Date. That word made Key nervous, he never thought he’d have to go through this whole dating thing again.

“Well actually that’s why I called, I wanna make it up to you. How does dinner sound tonight? My treat.”

“What time?” Key glanced over at the alarm clock that sat on his nightstand, 4:14 stared back at him in big red letters.

“How about 7:30? I’ll pick you up at your house?”

“Sounds like a plan. I’ll text you my address.”

“Alright. Wait don’t you need my cell number?”

“Caller id.”

“Oh, right, well I’ll see you then?”

“Yup. Oh and uh try not to think about me .” with that, the call ended.

“Wait what?” Key felt a blush creep on to his cheeks as the thought of Jinki became more vivid in his mind. Pushing the thought to the back of his mind, Key adjusted his pants and stood up to get ready.

Key ran his fingers through his hair one last time and tugged at the bottom of his shirt before checking the address on his phone for the millionth time.

“Okay, he only lives fifteen minutes away and if I leave now, we should be able to make it on time with a few minutes to spare.” Key mumbled to himself as he walked out of his room and down the hall way. When he reached the stairs , he briskly walked down them and into the living room to find his mother and daughter cuddled up on the couch watching a movie.

“Alright ladies, I’m taking off,” Key leaned over the couch and kissed Victoria’s forehead “Don’t wait up.” Key turned to walk out of the room.

“Bye umma!”

“Be safe darling, we love you!”

Key smiled to himself; he was really glad that he came back here, Victoria needed a female figure in her life. When he entered the garage, Key pulled out the keys from his pocket and unlocked the car. Getting into the drivers side, he opened the garage door, started the car and backed out of the driveway.

Key pulled the vehicle to a stop in front of the house he assumed was Jinki’s. Verifying that the house was indeed his, he got out of the car and slowly proceeded up to the front door, his stomach feeling in knots.

‘It’s just Jinki, calm down!’ Key mentally scolded himself as he reached up to knock on the door but the twisted still sat strongly in his stomach.

“Hello Key.” Jinki said as he answered the door with a smile. Key returned the smile and rubbed his clammy hands on the side of his jeans.

“Hel-” Key turned and threw up his lunch in the bushes. Jinki let out a gasp and took a step back but quickly retraced his steps and rubbed Keys back. After he finished, Key briskly stood up straight.

“Oh no.” Key threw his hands in front of his face, to embarrassed to look at Jinki and started spewing apologizes towards Jinki, who in return, placed his hands on Key’s shoulders.

“Don’t worry about it, its not that big of a deal,” Key sent him a meek smile, still embarrassed. “Come on, I have extra tooth brushes in the bathroom.” Jinki grabbed ahold of Key’s hand and led him to the bathroom. Even though he was embarrassed, Key had to admit that he felt better.

Once they reached the bathroom, Jinki let go of Key’s hand and headed for the closet. Opening the door, he reached in and pulled out a green tooth brush and handed it to Key.

“The tooth paste is behind the mirror and when you’re done, put the tooth brush on the counter. I’ll be downstairs in the kitchen, which go down the stair and walk straight back.” Key nodded, still too embarrassed to say anything as Jinki left the bathroom. Key turned and faced himself in the mirror and noticed a piece of hair out of ace so he fixed it then did his steps and started to brush his teeth. Once he was finished, Key followed Jinki’s directions and found him leaning against the counter, drinking what he assumed coffee from the smell, with a faint smirk resting on his face.

“What?” Key asked

“Nothing,” Jinki placed his cup in the sink. “Feel better?”

“I do.”

“Good, now how about that date?”
