The Decision

All a Lie

The bell of the coffee shop rang above her head as she opened the door, entering the small quaint space. The aroma of coffee beans filled her nose and she sighed. She ran her hands through her hair and combed it out, little droplets of water trickling down on her jacket. She looked around and saw that there were hardly any people, which was a weird sight as coffee shops were usually filled up.

She walked towards the counter, quickly deciding on what she wanted. She politely greeted the barista before she told him her order. As she handed him the money, the ring on her finger caught her attention. Shining brightly under the florescent light, she couldn’t help but twirl it around with her thumb. The ring was a symbol of her commitment, but she couldn’t help but feel a heavy weight within her heart.

She chose the right person to be with that night, two years ago. She knew that she made the right decision. They had been so good for the past two years and couldn’t ask for anything better.

Before she could go any deeper into her past, a voice interrupted her. “Excuse me, are you still ordering?”

She turned around and apologized. “I’m sorry, I’m don—“ she stared at the person. It was as if fate was playing with her, the person she was thinking about just moments ago was right in front of her. “J-Jiyong,” she said, looking at the man with black and pink hair beside her. He looked at her in equal surprise.

-

They sat across each other awkwardly, avoiding each other’s gazes. Her hands cupped the mug of coffee she ordered while his was stuffed in his pockets as he leaned back on his chair.

“H-How have you been?” her voice soft, afraid to speak up.

His eyes flickered up to meet hers, making her heart palpitate. She remembered the last time she had seen him, the last time they had ever talked. It was that night at her place.

“We need to talk,” she said as she looked up at him.

Jiyong looked at her before scoffing and turning his back on her. “Why does it seem like –,” he looked back at her. “—you’re breaking up with me even though we aren’t even together?” he said as he sat down on her couch.

“Ji,” she took a small step towards him. “Last night was –“

“I swear if you say a mistake—” she could see that he was starting to get angry.

“No!” she walked up to him and cupped his face as she kneed down in front of him. “Last night was—it was amazing,” she said honestly, though her eyes were sad. “B-but I realized that…I can’t be with you.”

He looked at her, his face still between her hands. He placed his hand on top of hers, nodding.

“I’m sorry…” she softly said, tears b her eyes. “I can’t want you while I still love him,” she scoffed, “Even after everything, Jiyong. I-I still love him.” Tears slid down on her cheeks.

Jiyong then removed her hands from his face and wiped away her tears. “It’s not your fault,” it was his turn to cup her face. “I let you go easily.”

“Things won’t turn back to the way they used to…will it?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Not for us,” he said. He pursed his lips and stood up. He said her name, before saying something that made her heart drop.

She turned around and stood up. “America?”

“Fine,” his reply was short. He then took a sip of his coffee, looking out at the window.

She stared at him, her heart racing. “You didn’t come,” she blurted out.

He turned to look at her, confused for a while. She showed Jiyong the ring on her finger before realization dawned onto him. He looked down and gulped.

                “I was busy,” he said.

“I see,” she said, hurt. “It’s just – he was missing his best man at the wedding…His – our best friend,” she said.

He looked up at her with apologetic eyes. They stared at each other for what seemed like eternity. As she looked at him, she noticed that he hadn’t changed much, aside from his hair style, which was always ever changing.

“When did you come back?” she asked, shifting her eyes away and taking a sip of her coffee.

“I’m just here for vacation,” he replied.

“Oh,” she said, slowly nodding her head.

A round of silence enveloped them as they sat in the near empty café. They would steal glances at each other every so often, questions from his end being held back. He couldn’t take the uncomfortable silence and decided to leave. The screech from his chair startled her.

She looked up at him in surprise. “Where are you –“

“I have to be somewhere,” he lied.

“I miss you,” she blurted out as she got up from her seat as well.  He paused, his back towards her. “W-we both do.”

Jiyong hung his head before looking back at her. “Congratulations. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.” he said before heading out of the shop.

She watched him walk out, her heart feeling as heavy as ever. She gave out a heavy uneven sigh, as she touched the ring on her finger once more. “I made the right decision. I’ll miss you Kwon Jiyong.”

A/N: Yeah, I always imagine a scenario in my head of how I want things to go, but when I start writing it, it never goes the direction I want it to. I'm not sure why it is. But yeah, sorry for the wait. I'll be posting up the alternate ending...sometimes soon. haha, I haven't actually written it.
