To The Moon

“What’s going on?” Chanyeol complains.

It seems that each of Sehun’s memories resolve around this area, high on the cliff. They’re back at the lighthouse. It looks noticeably younger, though its paintwork is slightly peeling around the edges.

A breeze picks up, and Baekhyun sighs as he watches the sun setting over the horizon. It’s beautiful up here, and Baekhyun now realises what could have possessed the pair to love this place.

He watches from the familiar clearing as Sehun and Luhan walk around, the pair of them noticing a piece of paper taped to an old lighthouse.

“Why would they abandon her like this?” Luhan asks.

“I suppose she’s no longer needed,” Sehun responds.

Chanyeol snaps his fingers, and is about to say something to Baekhyun, but Baekhyun shoves him out of the way so he can listen for himself.

“No longer needed?”

“You know how it is,” Sehun says kindly, “everything has its time. With GPS they probably don’t need her anymore.”

“Look,” Sehun points to the note. “We’ve got a stable situation right now. If we continue to save, maybe we can build a house up here.”

Luhan smiles widely, and jumps up, running over to Sehun with open arms. Sehun returns the smile and lets Luhan wrap his arms around his neck. Sehun kisses his lover on the forehead.

“We’ll be able to see her every day!” Luhan cries happily. “We’d always be nearby! She’ll never be alone again!”

Things begin to click. Yoona is the lighthouse.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Chanyeol whispers, “It’s like watching a train wreck.”

Baekhyun turns to his partner and flicks him on the nose.

“Hang on, Yoona is the lighthouse? Why would Luhan refuse treatment for a lighthouse?” Chanyeol looks at Baekhyun in confusion.

Baekhyun shrugs, and uses his stylus to click on the spheres on the screen. It points to a small origami rabbit, the same one it seems, the yellow and blue one.

“Ready to leave?” Chanyeol asks. Baekhyun takes his hand as the rabbit glows.

“Luhan?”

Baekhyun and Chanyeol find themselves in what looks like Sehun’s bedroom. It’s the same room, however the furniture is slightly rearranged. There’s a desk to the southern part of the room, and Baekhyun walks towards it.

“Oh God, not again!” Chanyeol exclaims. “I just don’t get it!”

Another rabbit.

Chanyeol makes his way downstairs, only to find a box of white paper sitting against the wall.

“What?”

Baekhyun leads Chanyeol into the kitchen, only to find Luhan sitting at the table, his hands fiddling with smaller sheets of white paper. There’s paper everywhere, shaped like small rabbits. Baekhyun is tired of looking at paper rabbits.

“Is this when it began?” Chanyeol asks.

Baekhyun shrugs.

“Maybe.”

Sehun passes through Chanyeol, and Chanyeol lets out a squeak.

“What are you doing?” he asks Luhan.

“Did you see the present I made for you?” Sehun nods.

“The rabbit on my table.”

“Describe the rabbit.”

“It was… it’s just a paper rabbit. I don’t know how else to describe it.”

Luhan looks hurt, like Sehun will never understand him. Baekhyun lets out a small sigh, and Chanyeol glances over at him. He looks sad. Chanyeol wishes he could comfort Baekhyun, but they are working, and when they are working they have to be discreet. Instead, Chanyeol rubs small circles into his partner’s hand.

“You’re acting strange, is something wrong?” Sehun asks Luhan.

“I think this is part of his condition,” Baekhyun exclaims. Chanyeol looks at him.

“You don’t think…”

“…Do you?”

“Could be, who knows?”

Baekhyun shakes his head. He remembers he must be impartial, and this is not a reality, this is just Sehun’s past.

“We shouldn’t bother, he’s not our client.”

Chanyeol nods, and looks across at the table.

“Isn’t that the same teddy bear from before?” he asks. Baekhyun gives a small nod.

“Could be the memory link.”

Baekhyun marches over to it and runs it through his laptop. It certainly was the next memento.

The pair find themselves in a small field, just off the highway. The same field that led up to where Sehun’s mansion stood.

The place is empty, and it is eerily quiet.

“This is where the house was?” Chanyeol asks.

Baekhyun nods.

“The house that should never have been.”

Baekhyun follows the familiar path towards the lighthouse, this time the path is slightly less overgrown. He looks up at the sky. Night again.

As Baekhyun steps through the clearing, he notices slight changes. There is no tombstone, instead the figures of Sehun and Luhan are standing over the edge of the cliff, looking down. The lighthouse is in use; it lets out a blinding light across the ocean, leading ships in.

The light does not obscure the stars, and Baekhyun looks up sighing. Baekhyun shakes his head and snaps out of it. Now is not the time.

“Is that why you approached me back then?” Luhan asks Sehun.

“Yeah.”

“What about now?”

“I suppose its just part of it… It was a long time ago, and it’s not important. I love you, Luhan. I shouldn’t have tainted our first meeting like that.”

Luhan looks at Sehun, and Baekhyun sees tears. Baekhyun hears a groan from behind him.

“This is painful to watch,” Chanyeol says, receiving a nod from his partner.

“What do you think they were talking about?” he asks.

Baekhyun shrugs.

“No idea.”

Luhan leaves Sehun by himself on the cliff face, and Baekhyun realises that things could have easily been better if either one of them had just leapt off the cliff in the past. It would have saved so much time and cleaned up a lot of this mess.

Baekhyun shakes his head and walks towards Sehun’s younger self. He finds a small backpack, and scans it. Sure enough, it’s the next link.

“I suppose we should just go on,” Chanyeol tells him, placing an arm on his shoulder. Baekhyun grimaces.

“I suppose.”

“Is this… a library?” Chanyeol asks.

Baekhyun scans the area. It’s a large, welcoming room with warm-coloured walls that are lined with shelves, homing books of almost every imaginable shape, size, and colour.

“He’s even more aloof than before…” Sehun tells what appear to be younger versions of Lay and Kris. “I just don’t know what to do.”

Lay sighs.

“Even when we’re in the same room, he’s never really… there. Kris, you have the same condition. What should I do?” Sehun’s eyes look wild.

“We may have the same condition, but we don’t share the same brain,” Kris remarks. “But… people like us long for connections, even if he doesn’t know how to express it, the need is there.”

Sehun sighs and looks like he’s about to break down.

“I know it’s hard.”

“Why is it that you’re normal, and you have the same condition?”

Kris raises an eyebrow.

“I found out my problem when I was young, so I’ve had years to deal with it.” Kris takes Sehun’s hand in his and gives it a gentle squeeze. “It’s different for Luhan.”

“Just tell me what I should do.”

“Hope.”

“How do you cope?” Sehun asks Kris.

“I both envy and pity Luhan,” Kris begins sadly. "It’s easy to learn the socially accepted ways of acting. I’m an actor, and I’ve done it all my life, practically every moment.”

Sehun searches Kris’ eyes; he’s telling the truth.

“I’ve gotten good at it, because acting is the only option I have. It’s the only way for me to be ‘normal’.”

Kris inhales loudly, looking at the ground.

“Luhan never had that. He remained an outcast, always different. He never learnt how to act ‘normal’… Even for me there are days when I just can’t stand faking it anymore.”

Lay hushes his boyfriend and wraps an arm around him. Kris leans in and rests his head on Lay’s shoulder.

“The Kris people know is not the real me, it’s a fake. The real me is a stranger, even to myself.”

Baekhyun shakes his head to snap out of his stupor.

“This isn’t part of our mission, let’s just move on,” he tells Chanyeol, upset. Chanyeol nods, placing a gentle kiss on his partner’s forehead. But they’re not done in this memory yet.

Sehun leaves Kris and Lay abruptly, seemingly lost in his own thoughts. He walks his way between the bookshelves, letting his fingers brush against the worn paper. Soon, he finds himself next to Luhan.

“What are you looking at?” he asks.

“Just a book. Hans Christian Andersen, I used to read them all the time as a kid. Still do.” Sehun nods, and places a hand on Luhan’s shoulder.

“Tell me about it?”

Luhan shrugs.

“Did you ever read this as a child?” Sehun nods.

“Maybe, when I was very small. I don’t remember.”

“Why haven’t you read it again?”

“Hm… I don’t know.”

Luhan lets out a sigh, and walks over to the counter, taking a library card out of his pocket. He’s still clutching the book, close to his heart. Sehun goes to follow, but Luhan doesn’t look back at him.

“I’ll read it to you.”

Chanyeol lets out a gasp and walks across to Luhan.

“Hey, that looks like the next memento,” he tells Baekhyun.

“Yeah.”

Chapter 20: :) I really liked it! Though there were tiny details that you missed, it was still very nice! You should watch Cryaotic's and CinnamonToastKen's playthroughs of the game! I also secretly wished that Chanyeol needed the medication, and that it was included, but oh well. Great job!!!!!

I saw the title and read the little snippet of the description available, and I FREAKED OUT because it reminded me of the game. And that was where you got the idea. I already love it and I haven't started it yet. :)
