To The Moon

“Perhaps we should first start with the lighthouse?” Baekhyun offers. Chanyeol gives a small nod.

The pair follow a path, stumbling across the clearing just before the lighthouse. It is already occupied by a man standing alone on the cliff before the sea, tossing what look like origami rabbits into the waves.

The wind is slight, and Baekhyun pulls his jacket closer to his small figure. Chanyeol wraps an arm around him and pushes him forward.

The old man turns, his eyes brightening as he finds the two figures.

“What a pleasant surprise. I don’t get many visitors up here,” he toots. His voice is musical, but Baekhyun notes there is a sadness to it.

“Oh Sehun? By name is Doctor Byun Baekhyun, and this is Doctor…”

“Doctor Von Heidrich…” Chanyeol giggles to himself.

Baekhyun pokes him in annoyance, and shoves him slightly to the side.

“This is my colleague, Doctor Park Chanyeol,” he explains in annoyance.

“Are you familiar with the Sigmund Agency of Life Generation?” Sehun nods.

“Oh, are you two from the agency? How convenient; I’ve just been thinking of calling you.”

Baekhyun shakes his head.

“Actually, you’ve already called us.”

Sehun steps back in confusion.

“We're here to fulfill our contract from the relative future,” Baekhyun explains.

Chanyeol steps forward, taking the older man’s arm.

“Careful there, if you slip off the cliff we’re gonna have to reload the memory.”

This confuses the older man even more. After a few seconds of though, Sehun looks from Chanyeol to Baekhyun and sighs, as if in resignation.

“You… you are here to take me to the moon, aren’t you?”

“Yes, Sehun.” Baekhyun rubs his shoulder comfortingly.

Sehun sighs and turns to face the sea, looking down sadly. Baekhyun stands next to him, and watches as the origami figures slowly toss in the waves.

“…I suppose I had a good run.” Sehun goes back to tossing his figures into the ocean, one by one.

“So can you do it?” he asks again. “Can you take me to the moon?”

Baekhyun shrugs.

“We can’t, but you might be able to.”

“Why do you want to go there?” Chanyeol asks.

Sehun shrugs.

“I don’t know.”

“You have to have a motive,” Chanyeol asserts. “Money? Fame?”

“I’m sorry, but I really don’t know…” Sehun responds quietly.

“I can already tell this is going to be a pain in the ,” Chanyeol mutters under his breath.

“In order to leap into the past and make your wish come true, we'll need a memento,” Baekhyun explains, leading Sehun away from the cliff.

“Do you have a small… something? Anything of importance to you will do.”

Sehun thinks for a moment, and pulls a small origami rabbit out of his pocket. But this one is different. Instead of being made of plain, white paper like all of the others, this one is composed of two colours. The figure has a round yellow stomach, and the rest of its body; ears, tail, and arms and legs, appear a light blue hue.

Baekhyun takes the figure from Sehun’s hand, and places it gently on the ground, over the top of the tombstone to hide it from the wind.

“We’ll have to prepare it first.”

Baekhyun takes out what looks like a small laptop, and presses a few buttons. There is a buzz, and the figure starts to glow. Both Chanyeol and Baekhyun step forward…

There is a bright light.

Baekhyun shakes his head and feels around with one arm. He looks around, noticing the environment has changed completely. They’re back in the mansion, but this time things are different. The kitchen is covered in little origami rabbits, everywhere. On top of bookshelves, cupboards, on the dining room table. The rabbits even occupy parts of the bookshelf, acting as spacers between the ordered sections.

“We haven’t gone back much.” Chanyeol says, pointing before him.

Surely enough, there is Sehun, sitting at the piano. He is playing a piece that sounds more melancholy than Baekhyun cares to think.

“We should turn on the invisibility, and the sound. It would be messy if we were seen,” Baekhyun notes, working away at his laptop with a stylus.

“Yeah, yeah.”

Chanyeol scans the room, his eyes widening slightly in confusion.

“This is creeping me out. We probably should have checked his record for psychopathy first.” Chanyeol complains, picking up one of the rabbit figures.

Baekhyun shrugs, and makes his way around the house slowly.

“We need to find memory links, so we can go further back in time and figure out why he wants to go to the moon.” Baekhyun says.

Chanyeol nods.

“I know.”

Chanyeol follows Baekhyun upstairs, watching in excitement as ever now and then Baekhyun’s screen flashes, revealing a memory link in the room.

“That?” Chanyeol points to an umbrella.

“Seems that’s the link.”

Five small spheres appear on Baekhyun’s screen, and they light up as the pair make their way around the house.

“Shortbread?” Chanyeol asks, as it passes over the food in the kitchen.

“Seems like it.” Baekhyun nods.

Chanyeol is confused that such a thing could be a link, but he doesn’t say anything else. He is too interested in sorting through and getting this job done as quickly as possible.

“Hmm… looks like this too.”

Another sphere lights up as Baekhyun hovers his laptop over an old grandfather clock that sits in the corner, its hands completely stopped.

“Weird.”

The pair work their way through the house until all of the spheres have lit up, and make their way back to the umbrella. Once Baekhyun plugs in the details, the umbrella lights up, and the pair step forward into it, launching themselves further into Sehun’s past.

“This isn’t too far back either,” Chanyeol remarks as he stands before the lighthouse.

“No,” Baekhyun agrees.

“We need to find a leaping memento, or it’s going to take all night,” Chanyeol complains.

“Just enjoy the scenery!” Baekhyun growls.

A slightly younger Sehun is sitting by the tombstone, an umbrella in his hand to deter the rain. The small teddy bear from before is sitting by his feet.

“Happy birthday, Luhan. It’s almost finished.” Sehun begins.

Baekhyun and Chanyeol stand there listening.

“Like you, soon I’ll be able to watch over her everyday. She won’t be alone anymore.”

“What’s he talking about?” Chanyeol whispers before he is violently hushed by Baekhyun with a slap on the shoulder.

“I don’t know why, but I always stayed true to your wish. Yoona must be grateful to you, too.”

“Who’s Yoona?” Chanyeol taps Baekhyun on the shoulder.

“Shut up!” Baekhyun growls.

“I wonder… when I’m gone, and you’re gone… Who will watch over us?”

Baekhyun feels a tug at his heart, and presses a button or two on his screen.

“What are you doing?” Chanyeol asks.

“Just go and look in the lighthouse.”

Baekhyun fades in, and Sehun turns around, startled.

“Who are you?” he asks.

“Byun Baekhyun, I was just passing by. Who are you talking to?”

Sehun runs a hand over the stone.

“Luhan, his name was Luhan…” There are tears flowing freely now, dropping down just like the rain that surrounds the pair.

Baekhyun grimaces and steps closer still to the man, placing a hand on his shoulder.

“It didn’t have to happen.” Sehun says coldly.

“What?”

“He didn’t need to do it… but… he did.”

Baekhyun his head to the side, expecting an explanation.

“You wouldn’t understand… Even I don’t understand.”

Baekhyun wants to do something to console Sehun, but he quickly reminds himself that he is just a memory, not even real. There is nothing he can do.

Baekhyun releases the man from his grasp, and walks off to find shelter in the lighthouse, looking for his partner.

“It’s pretty empty in here,” Chanyeol explains, making his way around the place.

“Yeah.” Baekhyun shivers. The air is crisp and chilled. Chanyeol laughs at him.

“You could have turned off the rain.”

Baekhyun shakes his head.

“We're not supposed to mess around too much with the memory, remember?” Chanyeol shrugs.

“Whatever.”

The pair ascend the stairs, their hands brushing every now and then. Baekhyun remembers the first day he met Chanyeol, in training. The teen was much taller than he was, and he had much more of a personality.

Baekhyun had wanted the job to be simple and quiet, an easy walk-in-the-park to get his position, simply jumping in and out of people’s memories and granting their wish, relatively steady pay, no need to worry about money or finances. But then Chanyeol came along and wiped away that notion.

Trainees and roommates, the pair got along like a house on fire. Chanyeol never did as good as Baekhyun in tests, so he was always complaining, and the only way Baekhyun could shut him up was to help him cheat his way through. Soon they were assigned as partners, and things just clicked.

Despite all of the aspects of Chanyeol that Baekhyun couldn’t stand, Chanyeol was Chanyeol, and that was all he needed.

Baekhyun calls Chanyeol over once all of the spheres have been relit on his screen.

“Ready to go back further?” he asks.

Chanyeol shrugs.

“Just make it quick.”

Baekhyun makes himself invisible again, and leads Chanyeol out of the lighthouse. He leans over the stuffed teddy bear quietly, and it glows.

A small flash of light, and the pair are further back in time.

Chapter 20: :) I really liked it! Though there were tiny details that you missed, it was still very nice! You should watch Cryaotic's and CinnamonToastKen's playthroughs of the game! I also secretly wished that Chanyeol needed the medication, and that it was included, but oh well. Great job!!!!!

I saw the title and read the little snippet of the description available, and I FREAKED OUT because it reminded me of the game. And that was where you got the idea. I already love it and I haven't started it yet. :)
