"Did you guys finally get together?"

Selective Mute

The following morning, a pair of roommates was seen in the parking area of their dorm, looking like they were arguing. The two of them were staring at each other, one was pouting and the other had an expression that just said that she was ‘stuck’.

“But I can’t just…” As she tried to escape it with a light rejection, it just quickly failed as the guilt grew bigger on her shoulders.

“I might not be able to talk to you much since I need to work.” The person in front of her simply shook her head before continuing to stare in the older person’s eyes.

“There’s gonna be a lot of people there.” Another shake of the head followed.

“You can’t just play around there. You’ll be bored.”

Tiffany shook her head once again, but this time vigorously. She didn’t want any more of Taeyeon’s excuses; she just wanted to go to work with her today, is that too much to ask? All she thought was that being alone in such a lifeless apartment for another day might just make her go insane if she didn’t go out soon. And by out, she meant, be with Taeyeon for a long period of time.

She was determined to be able to see Taeyeon’s workplace one way or another.

Her hands grabbed the shorter person’s and started to sway them back and forth, pouting along with it. She knew that Taeyeon could never resist such requests; all she needed was a bit of persuasion to let it happen.

Staring at the adorable face of the voiceless girl, she could only bare a few seconds of it before she finally groaned and said, “Fine, get in the car.” Tiffany’s eyes instantly lit up, putting on an eye-smile afterwards as she clapped her hands and got in the car.

The person still outside of the vehicle sighed deeply, scratching the back of her head. “I should take a class about being assertive or something…” she mumbled to herself while going around the car to the driver’s seat. “Or…make a shield to reflect Tiffany’s power over me.”

She opened the car door and hopped in, where Tiffany was already comfortably seated in the passenger’s seat with a seatbelt already around her.

As the car started and moved out of the parking area, a smile never faded right next to her. The mushroom couldn’t help but just feel complete happiness. Getting her way and spending another whole day with Taeyeon? Life has never been better.

The mechanical vehicle went through a handful of streets, a couple of traffic jams, and an insignificant bridge and so on right before they finally met with a tall office building, amazing the mute’s eyes. She stared at the sky blue-reflected glass thinking about how on earth anyone could build such a structure.

On the driver’s seat, the older person chuckled at the reaction of her friend before she parked the car and got out of it, along with Tiffany. Taeyeon quickly double-checked herself through the window’s reflection, straightening her clothes and holding her briefcase tightly. She sighed heavily and started to walk over to her work building’s entrance while Tiffany simply followed along.

Staff casually greeted Taeyeon, also her colleagues—most of them just glanced at the sheepish girl behind her, wondering who the Korean American was.

The older person looked back at the awkward girl following her and laughed. “C’mon, there’s nothing to be afraid about. Why don’t you stand next to me?” Tiffany pressed her lips in hesitation for a few seconds, right before she pushed herself to walk towards Taeyeon, though a cling on her arm was necessary for her to be comfortable with it.

That action attracted more attention; it suggested that Taeyeon and this mysterious lady were possibly together.

It even fooled the couple whom Tiffany met not too long ago.

“Hm? What’s this? Did you guys finally get together?” Yuri remarked with a wide grin as soon as they crossed paths.

Jessica, holding on to her lover’s hand, continued the previous sentence. “I don’t even think we need to ask.” She laughed.

Taeyeon sighed heavily and looked at the younger girl around her arm. “We’re not together. She’s just shy.” She lifted her free arm over to the silent girl’s head, patting it.

Tiffany just listened to the conversation since she didn’t want to make a fuss about something when she’s in such a public place. Though if this was back at their apartment, she might’ve leaned over and place a kiss on Taeyeon’s cheek just for Yuri and Jessica to continue teasing them.

“Whatever you say, Taeyeon.” Yuri smirked. “You were only gone for a day so I doubt that you were sick, no one recovers that fast. I wonder what happened yesterday, Sica.” She turned to the person beside her.

“We’ll never know, Yul~” Jessica played along, placing the equally mischievous smirk on her lips.

“Aish, just get out of here, guys.” Taeyeon groaned and pushed past them, hurrying up to the open elevator.

---

Tiffany swayed side to side on the chair she was sitting on. Her eyes have glanced at everything worth looking at and her hands have already played with anything possible in Taeyeon’s office. She glanced at the clock and let out a silent sigh, seeing as she still had a lot of time to kill.

Taeyeon took her eyes off the computer screen filled with complex charts and chuckled at the bored mushroom in front of her desk. “I told you that you’d be bored.” She smiled.

Tiffany turned to her friend’s gaze and shook her head immediately to the statement she just heard. She even reluctantly gave an eye-smile just to show that she’s not that bored as it seems.

But still, it didn’t change Taeyeon’s opinion. “Hmm…” She started. “There’s really nothing to do here unless you’re an employee. The most fun you can have is if one of the vending machines gave out an extra pack of chips.” She scratched her head in devastation, hating the fact that her statement couldn’t be any more accurate. “Uhm…Yuri’s office is across the hall, maybe you can talk to her or something.” She suggested and stood up, already walking to

Tiffany nodded slowly and stood up, following Taeyeon. They both walked up to the door leading to her friend’s office.

“Wait—Sica—“ Continuous mumbles and whispers were heard outside the door.

Even though it made both Tiffany and Taeyeon hesitate to even enter, curiosity took over them and turned the doorknob without thought. As soon as they stepped in the room and look around, Tiffany’s face instantly turned red and shocked.

Yuri was sitting on her office chair with Jessica on her lap, lips in tact. When they both realized someone had stepped into the room, Jessica quickly got off her lap and tried to fix herself as much as possible while Yuri tried to regain her composure.

“Oh—what?! C’mon guys! It’s 11 in the morning and you’re at work!” Taeyeon turned around, hiding her red face as she slapped it lightly to remove the rising heat.

“Well, somebody should knock first before entering!” Jessica argued, trying to fix her messy hair. “What are you guys even doing here? Get out!” She continued to say things quickly, trying to recover from the embarrassment. Yuri just sat there, hiding her face in shame.

“Fine!” Taeyeon grabbed Tiffany’s wrist and they quickly scurried back to her own office.

“S-Sorry you had to see that.” She mumbled as soon as they closed the door. Tiffany still had a heated up face and chose to look down on the floor, nodding lightly.  “I guess you’ll have to stay here with me.”

Taeyeon walked over to her computer, but not before grabbing a stool and placing it next to her. “I’ll do my best to entertain you. The good thing is that at home we may not have a computer but we have one here.” She smiled and tapped the seat next to her, signaling Tiffany to come and sit down.

The mute stared at the empty seat left out for her—but she knew there was a seat way better. Instead of sitting down at the stool, she moved in front of Taeyeon and sat on her lap with a smile.

The older girl blushed lightly at the sudden action. She knew that Tiffany had grown attached to her and often does these things but nevertheless, they always make her heart skip a beat.

Their afternoon was filled with giggles and smiles from searching through different websites for funny memes and GIFs. At some point, Taeyeon even forgot she was at work and barely touched her paperwork anymore.

As the hands of the clock reached 5 O’ Clock in the afternoon, their downloaded movie ended and Tiffany felt limp in the Korean girl’s arms. “Pany-ah?” Taeyeon peered past her shoulder while tightening her hold to make sure she won’t fall. A peaceful face of slumber met her gaze.

“So beautiful.” The words slipped past Taeyeon’s lips so fast that she blushed just as hard. She was thankful that Tiffany wasn’t awake or else, may the world swallow her whole right then and there.

It was only then did she realize how close their lips were. She could even feel the mute’s soft breathing.

Taeyeon kept staring at Tiffany’s pink lips and couldn’t help but think of a million thoughts as her heart beats faster and faster. But all of those thoughts all lead to one point:

“Can I kiss you?”

The thought of actually thinking that asking made Taeyeon want to burst.

If Tiffany wasn’t on her lap, she would have definitely jumped off and ran for it. But since the moment was perfect and nobody else was here to witness it, nothing stopped her; she was terrified of how great an opportunity has dawned upon her.

She would be a fool to throw it away.

Slowly and carefully, not to ta wake her, she positioned Tiffany at a better angle where their lips would meet perfectly.

Taeyeon reached over with her right hand to brush away the hair hiding her angelic face. A smile came upon Tiffany’s lips that almost scared the shorter girl away but since her eyes kept shut, all she did was smile in return, knowing she was still asleep.

No one would dare and ruin this moment. Not even the universe.

In a breath-holding moment, Taeyeon slowly leaned cautiously, her eyes closing completely.

All at once, her heart stopped and her mind went blank once their lips touched and pressed together. Electricity ran through her and it was as if she was in a movie and everything blurred except her and Tiffany.

“So soft…so sweet.”, was all Taeyeon could think about.

Suddenly, the moment shattered:

She felt Tiffany stir and before she could even pull away, she awakened.
