Chapter 1
Wings of the World
Chapter 1
"It's gonna be another long day"
Letting out a soft sigh as he caught sight of the first of the many emails that his
computer was still receiving, he decided to ignore it for the time being while he
made his way out of his office into the pantry to grab a cup of coffee.
"Good morning Young Saeng shi"
"Good morning ajumma, you don't look too well today. Have you seen the doctor?"
Young Saeng greeted the clerk who had been assisting him since the day he came into the company.
"Kwenchana, it's nothing"
"Be sure to take some time off if you don't feel better"
"Arasso, this young man here is even naggier than an old lady"
He later found the old lady fast asleep on her desk after lunch and immediately
sent her home personally despite her protests.
"Who was it who always told me to take some time off from work to rest?
This is an order from the president's son."
He had always felt particularly close to her as she was like a second mother to her,
and she was a sharp contrast from his own mother.
Mrs Heo, which was what he calls her whenever he had to speak to her, spends most of
her time in the town's most luxurious restaurants, boutiques and spas or traveling around.
They waited for a while outside ahjumma's place after they rang the doorbell and
were finally greeted by a young lady who opened the door slightly.
"Ji Eun ah, it's me omma"
"Omma, why are you back so early?"
The young lady asked as she opened the door fully for her mother to enter, totally
ignoring Young Saeng's presence.
He felt a little disturbed though, until he realized that the old lady was guiding her
along as they made their way in.
This is probably why ajumma insists on working even though she's not feeling well
- she had to support her visually impaired daughter.
The young lady later apologized for not greeting him as she didn't know that he was around.
"Since you're already here, do you want to have some tea before leaving?"
"Well, why not… thank you"
That was how they first met.
"Annyeong, Ji Eun shi. Is ajumma feeling better?"
"De, but she's already asleep…"
Young Saeng returned to their place after knocking off the following day with some
fruits and health supplements for the old lady, but since it was already past 10
when he left the office she had already turned in for the day.
"Would you like to stay for a cup of tea?"
"Sure"
He didn't know what made him stay, as he would usually be in a rush to head home
for a short gaming session or read a book to destress before ending the day.
What was meant to be a short drinking session stretched all the way till almost
midnight when Ji Eun's dad returned home after his shift work. He felt so
comfortable with her that they could chat about almost anything, and she seems
to know his struggles despite their brief meeting.
"Life might not exactly be fair to us, but there are many ways we can make up for it.
When was the last time you took time off to do something you liked?
You know you can at least be nice to yourself sometimes…"
Her words echoed in his mind as he made his way home.
She's right.
He doesn't have much of a choice over what to do in his life, being the family's only heir.
But he could still at least take some time off to enjoy instead of working away silently and lamenting over it.
"Ajumma, can I bring Ji Eun out this weekend?"
"Mwoh?"
The old lady's eyes widened upon hearing his request, but he still managed to persuade her into it.
"Are you afraid… that I'm a bad guy?"
Young Saeng asked as he noticed Ji Eun was trembling slightly when he took her
hands and led her out of her place.
"Ah… aniyo. It's just, I haven't been out in a long time… to a new place"
For the past ten years or so in her life ever since she lost her eyesight in an accident.
Though she could actually move around with the cane, she eventually settled for a
few places she got familiar with to prevent herself from getting lost and letting her
parents worry.
She suddenly began chuckling and he wondered why.
"How can he be a bad guy when Omma has nothing but praises for him?"
