Late Night Gift
Late that night, your cell phone rang.
You furrowed your eyebrows and opened one bleary eye *Who would call in the middle of the night?* You groggily felt the nightstand for your phone. You grabbed it and put it to your ear. “Hello?” You mumbled, half-asleep.
“Your sleeping voice sounds sexy!” A familiar voice said.
Your eyes popped open. You sat up, “L. Joe?!”
“Who else would have such a charming voice? Don’t you just want to attack me?” He grinned.
You narrowed your eyes, “I want to attack you FOR WAKING ME UP AT 4 IN THE MORNING!”
“Deal! You can be on the top! I like it when girls take charge! Rawr!” L. Joe growled.
You slapped your forehead and sighed in surrender, “Why did you call?”
“Can you come out for a second?” He asked.
Your eyes rounded, “Now?!” “Yup.” L. Joe nodded.
“Why?” You asked. “Cause I’m here, silly.” L. Joe chuckled.
“WHAT?!” You went to the window and looked out. He smiled at you and waved. You snapped your phone shut and gaped at him *OMG.* You quietly crept downstairs and raced out the door. “L. Joe! What are you doing here?! It’s so late!”
L. Joe looked you up and down, “On second thought, I’ll be on top.” He licked his bottom lip and slipped a thumb across it, “Damn girl. You look HOT in those flimsy short shorts.”
You turned red and covered yourself *I forgot I was in my pjs!*
“I wonder if they easily come off.” L. Joe reached for you and you slapped his hand away, “Behave!”
“Why? I like being naughty.” He smirked. You rolled your eyes and turned to go back in but he grabbed your arm, “Hey! You can’t treat someone who brought you a gift like this!”
You blinked, “A…gift?”
L. Joe covered your eyes.
“Hey!” You yelped.
“Come here! I want to show you something!” Excitedly, L. Joe walked you over to the corner. “Ready?” He whispered in your ear. You bit your lip and nodded.
L. Joe smiled and uncovered your eyes, “Surprise~”
Your eyes opened and you gasped. There was a new, bright pink bicycle (the exact same color of L. Joe’s hair) awaiting you. It even had a bell and basket. You covered your mouth and looked at him.
“Go on.” He nodded, “She’s all yours.”
“Oh my gosh…” You whispered as you went closer. You gently glided your hand over the smooth metal. Now you wouldn’t have to worry about your tire getting flat.
“I call her PINKY!” L. Joe exclaimed.
“Where did you get this?” You asked.
“Get it? Pfft. I bought it.” L. Joe rolled his eyes.
“Where’d you get the money?” You looked at him, slightly suspicious. He smirked and crossed his arms, ‘I didn’t sell drugs if that’s what you’re asking.” You turned pink, “I was just wondering…”
“I bought it with my own money. That’s all you need to know.” L. Joe mysteriously shrugged.
“I don’t know if I can accept this.” You bit your lip.
L. Joe softened. He stooped down next to you and took your hands. You looked at him. L. Joe blew warm air onto your cold hands and softly smiled at you, “You can accept it. I told you. I’ll take care of you now. This is just the start.” He nodded at the bicycle, “You need to go to college, too, right?”
You softened. You couldn’t burden him with that task. Even if it was just words, you were thankful. You wrapped your arms around his neck and whispered, “Thank you, L. Joe.” He blinked in surprise then softly smiled. L. Joe wrapped his arms around you and squeezed you tightly, “Anything for you, goma agashi. Whatever you need, I’ll fulfill it. Know that no matter what, I’m always here for you.”
You smiled, happy and sturdy of his support.
L. Joe and you pulled away and stood up. “I should go if I want to wake up in time tomorrow for school and see you.” He gave you a wink, “I expect you to be riding this.”
“Of course.” You beamed, “Thank you.”
L. Joe sweetly ruffled your head, “No problem.” He hopped onto his motorcycle, “Baby, say goodbye to Pinky!”
You couldn’t help but laugh.
L. Joe waved and disappeared into the night.
You sighed in content, smiled at you brand new bicycle, and skipped inside. All the worries and troubles from the night disappeared. You went to sleep smiling *Because of you, L. Joe.*
