Chapter VIII

Our Story

A good two weeks had passed since that one night which had brought Kai and Miya into each other’s lives.

Much to the latter’s disappointment, the time spent did not result in any development between the two and the pair remained as distant as ever – if anything, it seemed as though they grew farther apart, if possible.

Neither knew what the other was doing and they never saw each other during the day. In fact, it was only at night when they were eating dinner that they “interacted” – and, by “interacted”, it meant sitting at a table together. Miya was busy juggling her job and her classes which kept her busy for the majority of her life. As for Kai, he was getting settled into his new home and, by the end of the second week, he had adjusted quite nicely. Though Miya would never know, Kai would find ways to keep himself busy while, at the same time, managing to stay undercover.

As the weeks passed, the paranoia and uneasiness the runaway felt slowly dissipated and he believed that his parents had probably gone for a smaller search – knowing that they would not give up on searching for him. In that case, Kai would have a little more freedom, but knew that could not relax since there was a high possibility there may be agents in the public looking for him – His family had that much power.

Concerning Miya… the wary older teenager, for the most part, came to accept her – and by “accept”, for Kai, it meant “This girl’s no threat”. However, he merely acknowledged the girl – nothing more and nothing less, it seemed.

There was a much more important girl in his life and he was finally going to be able to meet her today.

Adjusting the sports cap on his head and fixing a few stray pieces of hair, Kai checked himself in the mirror to make sure that his appearance was presentable. He decided to go for a semi-casual look with a fitted light blue button down shirt tucked into some gray slacks with a dark brown belt secured around his waist. To complete his outfit, he would wear some dress shoes that he had bought just about a week ago.

Admittedly, the hat did not seem to fit his clothes, but Kai needed it for the possibility of a spy being out there to look for him, undercover.

As the love-struck boy was finishing getting ready, his mind couldn’t help but wonder back to the most recent conversation he had with Soo Yun – the mere thought was beginning to excite him.

“Oppa, I really miss you…”

“I know, I miss you too, Soo Yun,” Kai paused for a slight second and he felt the urge to smack himself as he realized he had completely ignored the idea of seeing his girlfriend. It had been a good week and the weekend was coming up – it was the perfect time for them to see each other!

… If Soo Yun was able to, that is…

“Soo Yun, are you free on Saturday?”

“Mmm yes, why?” Upon hearing this, the eager boyfriend curved his lips upwards into a smile. “How about I take you out somewhere?”

There was a slight pause on the line until Soo Yun exclaimed, “Yes! Yes! Yes! That would be great, Jong In!” Just from the happiness that was apparent in her voice, Kai was easily able to picture her jumping up and down while holding her cell phone and chuckled at the image.

“Alright… how about lunch?”

“Anything you want, oppa! Just as long as I get to see you, anything’s fine,”

From that one simple sentence, Kai’s heart began to thump against his chest and he couldn’t help but give a cheesy smile – not caring if anyone was watching at the moment.

“Alright, I’ll let you know the details as soon as I get them figured out, okay?”

“Okay, oppa,”

He gave a small grin – the memory already giving him the feeling of having butterflies in his stomach as he deemed himself presentable and stepped out of the bathroom to make his way to the entrance of the house.

Kai was just about to step through the frame of the door until he heard an “Ah! Kai, where are you going?”

At that moment, his good mood was reduced a significant amount as the upwards curve of his lips settled downward to a straight line as he turned to look at, who other than Miya.

“Out,” He was, admittedly, becoming a bit impatient as he forced himself to wait for a response from Miya – Kai was running a little bit late and he did not want to be late in meeting his beloved girlfriend, whom he hadn’t seen for practically a month. He needed, at least, two hours or so to figure out the transportation system and to give himself some time to just finalize the date.

Miya’s mouth opened and closed a number of times, but the furrow of her eyebrows and the frown that laid on her lips were apparent – not that it affected Kai in any way. “Um… okay, you’ll be back tonight?’

“Yeah,”

“Alright, I’ll see you later?” Not another second was wasted and Kai had already made his exit, leaving the girl alone in her house.

As Miya’s feet remained firmly planted on the ground, she sighed and looked down at the hardwood floor, rubbing her head in frustration as she wondered just how much longer she was going to be putting up with Kai’s rudeness.

You pushover…

“I’m sorry for the trouble and thank you very much!” Giving a polite ninety degree bow, Chan Yeol proceeded to continue his search as he had checked off another house on his written map. He let out a sigh and ruffled his hair as he dragged his clothed feet along the concrete cement of the sidewalk. The towering young adult blew out a puff of air upwards to move a stray piece of hair out of his face as he searched the area for his next target house.

Chan Yeol gave himself a pat on the back for being able to stay so alert – though the espresso he had earlier this morning helped to prepare for his search. He also took note, while checking over his list again, to thank Dae Ho later on for helping him to find his troublesome younger sibling.

His attention was then brought to something which had been repeated quite a few times.

There was one house that seemed to have been suggested by about three or four people he had come across.

He checked a piece of scrap paper which he had been given with directions scribbled onto them and decided to give the house a try.

Lightly humming a tune, Miya was finishing the last of the dirty dishes which lay in the sink, careful not to get any of the leftover residues of the soap or water onto her work uniform. After rinsing off the final plate and placing it in the rack, the satisfied girl turned to wipe off the water that stained the countertop.

Miya was, overall, a very clean girl, but she admittedly did make some messes.

“… I have to find something else to keep me busy for today… Day-offs are nice, but kinda weird, too… hehe…”

What a workaholic.

Suddenly…

Ding Dong.

Miya’s ears perked up at the sound of the doorbell as she wondered who could possibly be visiting her. All her friends knew her busy schedule and she was typically the one who usually planned the hangouts. Kai now had the key to the house, so he wouldn’t have to ring the doorbell to get inside the house.

The list was of possible people was getting shorter and shorter.

Just who could it be?

It was still considerably light outside, so Miya wasn’t too afraid of any type of stranger and knew some basic self defense techniques. She reluctantly opened the door only to be greeted by a dark canvas painted with various colors and marks.

… Oh… wait… that’s a shirt design.

Upon realizing the situation, Miya slowly lifted her head a good amount of degrees in order to see the face of the stranger.

There was but one word that came to Miya’s mind as she was finally able to see the stranger’s face.

… Tall…

… Then again, it didn’t help too much that the small girl was rather short.

A handsome face with large eyes and perfectly proportioned facial features came to view as Miya felt herself slightly blush at the attractive man that was in front of her. His auburn honey colored hair was rather disheveled, but did not look bad at all and was covered by a cap which matched his shirt.

The giant quirked an eyebrow at the fact that there lack of a presence in the house, yet the door had magically opened. It was then that he realized a very likely and plausible theory and averted his gaze downwards to see an innocent faced girl who looked to be a young teenager – The top of her head reaching to his shoulders.

… Okay…

He knew he was tall, but this girl definitely had to be short for this much of a height difference.

Wait… why is this girl here? This is Jong In’s place, right?

Chanyeol had checked practically a billion times to ensure that Kai’s signal was linked to this address and even asked around if there was a new neighbor in the area – He was even referred to this house a number of times. Both were confirmed… so, who in the world could this girl be?

Was she a maid? Perhaps a new friend?

… Or an outlet for Kai’s frustration!?

The older brother flushed at the thought and mentally smacked himself for conjuring such a erted idea, but, he was soon brought back to reality at the sound of a timid quiet voice. “Um…”

His attention was given to the house owner as she continued speaking. “Is there anything I can help you with?”

“Oh, yeah, I was wondering if you’ve seen this person?”

Chanyeol had good luck in hiding his brother’s identity and his own since none of the people he encountered seemed to recognize them. Considering that the neighborhood could be considered a rather… low one, he didn’t expect too many people to know about Hanuel Hotel’s family members since the people were probably too concerned with their own matters rather than the ones of a rich family – The fact that they were shown a miniscule number of times also helped in concealing their private lives.

So, the tall young adult didn’t hesitate in showing a picture of Kai to the girl in front of him as he asked the question.

However, with her reaction, Chanyeol felt a rather anxious feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“I was wondering if you’ve seen this person?” Miya blinked at the guest’s question, but complied as he began to take out his wallet and presented a small rectangular photograph to her. She inched a bit closer in order to get a better view of the wanted person and her eyes widened once she realized that she knew the person.

The person was living at her place for Pete’s sake!

A bit too late in realizing her obvious facial expressions, Miya covered to prevent any details which would give away her knowledge, but it was useless considering the giant had already caught her façade and widened his eyes at her look. “You know him?”

“Um…”

Though the urge to fib a little once again came to mind, Miya immediately shook it off as her moral conscience scolded her for lying, once again. If this man was looking for Kai and had even presented a picture of him to her, he definitely had to have some kind of close relationship to him. Not to mention, from Miya’s first impression of the tall person, he seemed to be genuine and worried.

Even her little devil was prodding her shoulder and going against the “bad” decision to “lie” – mentioning, “Well, your face kinda gave it away, so what’s the point?”

“Yes, I know him,” Hearing her statement, the stranger’s face instantly brightened and he flashed a goofy and relieved grin. “Finally, I got him!” The inhabitant felt a slight sense of relief to see that the guest gave off no dangerous feeling and was just as she had predicted.

After what seemed to be a million houses, Chan Yeol had finally found someone who actually knew his brother. It was such a great relief for the older brother and, at the same time, the found saved some energy for Chan Yeol from continuing for, what could have been, three more hours or so.

“Aish, this kid, causing me so much trouble,” Chan Yeol seemed to have almost forgotten about the petite girl in front of him as he suddenly stopped in his little happy dance and rubbed the nape of his neck, slightly embarrassed. “Oh, sorry about that,”

“Eh he, it’s no problem,” A nervous vibe was practically radiating from her body as the giant took note of her tapping feet and her teeth biting her bottom lip. He seemed to be intimidating her and Chan Yeol couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty, getting the sense that he was the cause of her uneasiness. After all, he did suddenly appear on her doorstep and almost waltzed in without so much as an introduction.

Oh, he didn’t even introduce himself!

“Ah, sorry, I didn’t even introduce myself. Must be weird since I only asked you if you’ve seen someone, right?” He extended out his hand as he grinned a contagious smile. “My name is Park Chan Yeol, it’s nice to meet you,”

Seeing this, Miya became a bit flustered and scurried to extend her hand and bowed a ninety degree bow, saying a quick, “My name is Lee Miya, it’s nice to meet you, too!” Chan Yeol couldn’t help but chuckle at how she seemed to get flustered from such a simple gesture and smiled as he took her much smaller hand and gave a slight bow himself.

“Um, not to be rude, but, how do you know this person?”

Chan Yeol had to debate for a slight moment as he pondered on whether or not he should give out his actual relationship to Kai.

This girl seemed pretty harmless and, knowing his younger brother, probably didn’t know anything about Kai since he is often slow to open up to new people. Both brothers weren’t very well known under the Hanuel hotel chain name and their parents had decided not to release a national broadcast, but, instead, have a private undercover search.

Why?

The older sibling could only guess that it was because they did not want some type of scandal to arise or any media wrecking the chain’s name. God knows what ridiculous ideas the news press would be able to come up with to tarnish its reputation.

“I’m his older brother,”

Brother!? So… his full name must be Park Kai?

“You’re Kai’s older brother!?” A quirked eyebrow was the taller man’s reply as this confused Miya, herself. “Kai?”

“Um… yes, that’s his name, isn’t it?”

… Must be some kind of nickname he gave himself… or it could be a completely different person. I’ll just have to see for myself.

Chan Yeol enthusiastically nodded his head, going along with the game that his younger sibling seemed to be playing. “Is he here?”

“Um… he just went out a while ago. I’m sorry,”

Hearing this, Chan Yeol slouched his shoulders as he was disheartened, letting out a saddened “Oh…”

After all this time and effort, it seemed that it all had been wasted and… what was the older brother to do now? It would be awfully rude if he were to ask to stay just to see if Kai would come back and his plans of finding him and bringing him back to his house were obviously delayed.

“Well, I guess I’ll be going then. Let him know that Chan Yeol came around,” Just as Chan Yeol turned his heel to begin his descent down the stairs – his mind now occupied with what he should spend the rest of his day doing – he heard a “Wait!” and turned around to meet eyes with the source of the shout.

Miya was standing there – the nervous façade still worn by her – and rubbing the side of her arm as she asked, reluctantly, “If you’d like, you can wait for Kai here. He usually comes back just in time for dinner, so….” she slightly jumped, causing Chan Yeol to tilt his head at her out-of-the-blue reaction, “Oh! But if you’re busy doing something and don’t have the time… um… you can just come back…?”

Chan Yeol couldn’t help but chuckle at her obvious indecisiveness and openly questioning nature as she was unsure of what to say herself. This girl was pretty much just explaining her thought process, but, the giant was easily able to deduce what her original intention was. “Do you mind?”

“O-Of course not! And… to be honest…” Her lips curved into a nervous smile. “I do have some questions about Kai… if you don’t mind?”

Ah, so there was some hidden intention behind asking.

This girl was getting more and more interesting.

“Not at all,"

Adjusting the sports cap on his head and fixing the sunglasses that were a bit crooked on his face, Kai was beginning to grow anxious as he continued to stand outside of a local restaurant, waiting for a certain someone to make her appearance.

As the seconds passed, the boyfriend was growing a bit impatient, yet, worried at the same time. He tapped on his cell phone’s screen to reveal that a good fifteen minutes had passed since he had first arrived. Now, admittedly, Kai was a bit late – fashionably late – , himself, but the very fact that he was late and Soo Yun was still not present when he arrived only concerned the former even more.

… She’s usually never this late…

“Jong In?”

At the sound of his name, Kai swiftly made a one hundred eighty degree turn with his head to see the person he so longed to meet since he had first ran away.

Wearing a ruffle detailed chiffon dress accented with a slimming coffee brown waist belt, Soo Yun stood a few feet away from her disguised other with her wedge strapped sandals firmly planted on the ground. The very sight of her wearing such a fitting outfit caused Kai’s heart to flutter a bit. Though Soo Yun was always the type to wear these type of clothes, it fit her so well that he couldn’t help but be reminded of her beauty, time and time again.

She blinked and tilted her head at Kai’s concealing outfit and made a few steps toward the suspected person to get a closer look as she tilted his cap to reveal his face. The girl smiled once she confirmed her suspicion and immediately hugged the slightly taller male. “It’s really you!”

“Soo Yun, I missed you so much,” He buried his face in her honey colored hair, taking in her floral scent which he had missed so much. She, in return, only tightened her hold around his neck, not seeming to care about the stares the couple seemed to be getting in the crowded area.

“I missed you, too, Oppa… but,” she pulled away for a quick second before lightly tapping his nose. “we’re getting some weird looks, so let’s go already!”

Feeling the slight warm feeling still on the tip of his nose, Kai chuckled and squeezed her waist once more before grasping her hand and interlocking his fingers with hers. “Alright, let’s go,”

The two proceeded to walk into a rather popular restaurant, judging by the number of people in it, as Kai led Soo Yun to their reserved table, effectively speaking to the waiter and obtaining an exclusive section of the building just for the couple. As the both of them paced their way over to the area, Soo Yun was amazed by the decorative details put into the walls and the simple yet comforting atmosphere the space gave. From the corner of his eye, Kai had caught his girlfriend’s reaction and couldn’t help but smile to himself as he sat her down in a gilded chair and sat himself in one across from her.

“You like it?”

“I love it, thank you, Jong In-oppa,”

“Glad you do,” Just as Kai was about to begin a conversation, the two were interrupted by a well dressed waitress who smiled at the couple. “Hello, my name is Mina and I’ll be your waitress for today, can I start you off with anything to drink?”

“Um, I’ll have just water, please,”

“Me too,”

“Alright, here are your menus and I’ll be right back with your drinks,” The attendant gave a slight bow as she gingerly placed the menus onto the table and went off to get their drinks. Soo Yun brought her attention over to a slightly frustrated looking Kai and giggled. “How about we figure out what we’re going to eat and then we can talk while we’re waiting?”

“… Alright,”

“Oh, so he was being a rebel?”

“Yeah, he’s got a lot to learn,” In the past half an hour or so, the two had begun quite an engaging conversation… which was focused on Kai, of course, who was the very matter which connected Chan Yeol and Miya. Otherwise, there seemed to be little chance or nothing that the two would have to suddenly start acquainting.

Miya was, admittedly, still a bit nervous and was almost positive that she was acting extremely awkward with the new guest in her house. She really tried to just be normal as she was with her friends, but she couldn’t bring herself to do so when meeting new people for the first time. “I’m sorry, Chan Yeol-sshi,”

“Huh? What for?”

“I must be kind of awkward right now and I’m really sorry about that,” Her keen ears picked up his rather low toned laugh – the pitch did catch Miya a bit off guard since the voice did not match his face at all! – and looked to see the young man in front of her in a casual position. “Nah, don’t worry about it. Like I said, it’s probably weird that someone like me is barging into your house looking for someone, right?”

Though her first impression skills seemed to be a bit lacking for Miya, she honestly felt some comfort being around Chan Yeol, who just took everything in stride and was pretty easy going, in her opinion.

“Ah, that’s right! We’ve been talking about Kai this whole time, I haven’t asked anything about you,”

“Sure, ask anything,”

“So-”

Ding Dong.

“…” The two currently in the house were alerted of a new guest as Miya began to wonder, once again, who else would be coming to her house. She shook her head as she scolded herself from going on another mind tangent like she had with Chan Yeol. Miya turned to her current guest and gave a nervous smile as she excused herself, “I’m sorry, let me just answer the door,”

“Sure thing,” Just as the inhabitant made her way to the door, she heard an all too familiar voice, saying, “Yah! Miya! What’s taking you so long~ your oppa is here for your monthly inspection,”

Rolling her eyes, the old teenager no longer needed to guess who the new guest was and was just about to open the door with her nimble fingers just barely touching the shiny metal of the door knob.

… That is until she remembered an important detail.

She slowly turned her head to see a care-free Chan Yeol entertaining himself with his hands as he was patiently waiting for the new person to enter the house.

Oh… NO…

I would like to start off first by apologizing for not updating for a month! It was a combination of laziness and business and I hope that you will forgive me~ There was also a bit of technical difficulty with the site, but it seems to have worked out! Kudos to the tech support~

However, I also made this chapter a little longer because I felt the inability to just cut it off just when the good stuff is starting to happen! This chapter is a little longer than the others, as you can see... and it's highly Miya-biased *fail* But! There is a reason why! ... If you consider it a legitimate reason ^^' Don't worry, Kai will have his time to shine in the next chapter for compensation~

I'm not sure how the updates will work on this story (With the academic year starting again...), but, fear not, there will be updates! I have neglected my other story, so I will be getting to that as well!

I hope you will patiently wait for the next chapter and thank you so much to all my readers and subscribers~! I love you all~! <3

As always, feel free to comment, subscribe, etc. as both are very much welcomed~! ^o^

Chapter 12: Baekhyun and Chanyeol seemed to built an interesting relationship from here. I thought Chanyeol would be smacked and hit or something or Baekhyun would jump into conclusion and something. But this is nice too !
Okay, to answer your questions :
1. Nice, I've always been a fan of slow character development, so I like it. So far, there's nothing weird with how any character is behaving, they act normal. Like Kai, normal as in, he acts as the mysterious person that he is who doesn't like his life being pried by anyone unless he wants them to. But still, Miya is still too gullible and naïve and kind to my liking.
2. I don't know. Maybe she ran away from home since her parents were always fighting ? Or her parents divorced and she decided not to come with any of them ? It's up to you though.
3. Well, obviously, the hero and heroine will eventually fall in love with each other, in this case it's Kai and Miya. But I'd like it if Chanyeol develops feeling for Miya and she does as well. They would date. And Kai finds out that Soo Yun was cheating on him with Sehun. Then that would be the start of KaixMiya's romantic relationship.
Lol, me and my imagination. Don't mind me !!!!!! XD update soon though, I love this story. :*
