Chapter V

Our Story

What to do… what to do…

Tapping his foot impatiently on the wooden floor of the living room, Kai lay slack in the monochrome colored bean bag chair as he started to ponder on what he could do for the day.

The bored runaway knew that there was a list of things to do, yet, he was unable to think of any of the tasks. Most of them, admittedly, were already done thanks to the generosity of Miya, so… exactly what was there left to do?

… Come to think of it…

It was then that Kai was reminded of an important issue that was in his life now:

Miya.

Exactly who was she?

Recapping the events of the past few days, it seemed that she was a university student who was living by herself and having some financial issues. She seemed to be separated from her family or, perhaps, she just decided to start living on her own and seldom talked to her parents or relatives. Though it could all very well be an act, Kai became less suspicious and was close to accepting the fact that this Miya girl wasn’t a spy of some sort that was out to get him.

That’s not to say he would completely abandon all his suspicions and let his guard down.

Slightly moving a bit, the ever so paranoid boy’s attention was brought to his sloppily bandaged arm, which reminded him of Miya’s kind gesture on the night that they met. Kai was then able to think of a suitable word to describe her.

She was… nice.

A recent example?

The pancake batter she had made turned into delicious pancakes despite Kai’s failure in flipping the breakfast morsels. If he actually knew how to cook, he was positive that they would have been the best flapjacks in the world.

… Perhaps too nice for her own good – Although Kai certainly wasn’t in any position to say anything due to the fact that he was one who had taken advantage of her charitable nature and now lived in her apartment.

As seconds turned into minutes, the older teenager began to feel bothered as he was unable to conjure any other characteristics to describe this petite girl.

Nice…

… Nice

What more was there, though?

… I guess… interesting…?

Kai then realized just how pathetic he was for knowing practically nothing about his fellow roommate.

Pathetic…

Now the runaway had thought of a word that fit him perfectly right now.

He groaned as he tossed around in the tiny area he had in the plushy micro bead chair. As Kai shifted his gaze from the leather material of his seat to the outside world through the transparent glass, he noticed that it was bright and sunny day. The temperature outside was sure to be comfortable, considering the time of the year, and being cooped up in this little house wasn’t going to do him any good.

The lounging teenager finally made the decision to dress up and start doing something.

As to what that “something” was… well, Kai would figure that out, eventually.

With one last look at the note Miya had left for him, he made a mental reminder to himself to keep track of the time and return by the designated time Miya had written.

 … Ugh, I feel horrible…

Miya was trudging her way home from her university, not in the mood to neither observe nor enjoy the beautiful scenery the campus offered as she usually did. Almost approaching the border line separating her school from the outside world, the guilty student decided to take a rest on a bench which was sheltered from the late summer sun by a leafy healthy tree.

She rested her head onto her hands as she bent forward to try and process all that has happened in the past few days and figure out what position she was in, now.

… A lot happened in the past few days, that was for sure…

In fact, there was little use in trying to think of everything because there was just so much!

It would take probably a good hour or something to explain to Baek Hyun… Miya squeezed her eyes shut as she shook her head.

As if Baek Hyun would believe me… and, if he did, he would never allow a guy to stay in my apartment!

Miya pressed her lips to the side just thinking of a furious Baek Hyun beating up an unknowing Kai. She couldn’t help but find some amusement in the imaginative scene, as well, since she was sure Kai was a good three inches or so taller than her brother figure.

Focus, Miya...

Focus!

As the troubled teenager looked at the white watch secured around her wrist, she jumped as she felt a jab to her side and yelped, immediately turning her head towards the culprit. Miya narrowed her eyes at the guilty offender. “What was that all about, Suzy!?”

“You were spacing out, silly,” The hurt victim cried out, “I was checking the time!” as she began to rub the affected area, whimpering and feigning a cry. Her friend rolled her eyes in a dramatic fashion, playing along with Miya’s overdramatic reaction. “Come on, don’t be such a baby,”

“It hurt. Really hurt. I think I may need to go to a hospital to get it checked out! And… and… I’m suing you and… and-!”  Hearing the long list of complaints, Suzy fake played a concerned look on her face and pleaded, “I-I’m so sorry, Miya! I-I didn’t know! Forgive me! I have done you wrong!” Miya stuck out her tongue and made a waving away motion with her hand. “You are forgiven,”

“Oh thank you so much, my kind, ever so forgiving best friend,” The two laughed at their silly act as the standing one brought up another topic. “I haven’t seen you in forever, what have you been doing?”

Miya felt the words get caught in as she timidly smiled. “Oh, you know, the usual work and stuff. For some reason, I was extremely busy the past few weeks, so I wasn’t able to attend classes,” Suzy felt a frown about to appear on her lips, but smiled in order to cover it. “Did you get my notes?”

“Yep! They helped a lot! Thank you!”

“No problem!” There was a brief silence between the best friends before Suzy was reminded of a recent issue and decided to address the subject, the more serious one. “By the way, I saw Baek Hyun a while ago and he seemed pretty upset. He went up to me to ask if I knew anything that was going on with you,” Miya made no movement or breath as she continued to listen to her taller friend speak.

Did Baek Hyun tell her, too?

“I said ‘No’, of course, but… is there anything going on with you? He seemed kind of worried,” Upon hearing the concern that was evident in her best friend’s tone, the troubled girl was faced with the dilemma of keeping her secret or telling her current position with Kai.

It was a rather delicate matter. All was going well before and nothing life-changing had ever come up, before…

That is until now.

Faced with the new situation, Miya was unsure of how to explain to her close ones. She was having an internal battle with herself, going through a mental thought process of what the possible outcomes of telling Suzy would be.

The secret would be out, but it would greatly help in relieving the anxiety and trouble Miya felt by just keeping it known between herself and the culprit of the student’s stress.

Suzy may end up telling Baek Hyun and the others… but, she was trustworthy and, if told not to tell, Suzy would zip her lips and keep shut.

Unlike Baek Hyun, Suzy would not freak out – or maybe not as much – over the fact that a guy now inhabited her apartment.

… What do I have to lose?

“Suzy… you’re my best friend, right?” The certain friend furrowed her eyebrows and narrowed her eyes in a suspicious gaze as she looked to her fidgeting friend.

It sounded as though Miya was dying for Pete’s sake.

Maybe, her worry wart of a friend was just playing around or groaning over a miniscule matter. “Of course, but… why do you sound as though you’re dying? Did you do something bad?”

Miya bit her lip and displayed some of her anxious habits which Suzy easily caught. The apprehensive teenager now knew that whatever her friend was hiding, it was serious. Shaking her head and gathering all her courage, Miya continued as she lifted her head upwards to look at the curious teenager, straight in the eye. “Do you promise not to tell Baek Hyun or anyone else?”

Just hearing the question worried Suzy as she felt a wave of uneasiness wash over her. It sounded pretty serious and Miya was not the type of joke around like this. The little skit the two had before was evident of that and Miya would always ensure that jokes never went too far as to cause misunderstanding.

What had Miya exactly done that would cause her to keep it a secret?

Did she get involved with something bad?

Was she in trouble?

“I promise, but, Miya, exactly what is it?”

“…” There was the slight dramatic pause as the pair stood in a brief silence before Miya had let out a sigh and spoke.

“… There’s a guy living at my apartment, now,”

“… Wait, what!?”

With a plastic forest green shopping basket in hand, casually strolling through the health section of the department store, Kai was browsing through the shelves in order to get some of his essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and the like. He was able to use some that Miya had bought for him, but they weren’t exactly the products he liked to use – Of course, Kai wouldn’t expect her to know his preferences.

Tossing in a few large bottles of the hair washing product and the other items which he had put on his mental shopping list, the pondering teenager noticed quite a few eyes landing on him – It was probably due to his rather tall impressive physique, which he had gotten compliments on before and, for some odd reason, caused him to stand out among the crowd despite there being a few other tall people. Kai tipped his symbol embroidered cap in order to conceal more of his face, keeping in mind that he was still “undercover”.

Shampoo… conditioner… toothpaste… wash cloth…

He was almost certain that he had gotten everything he needed concerning health needs. His holder was getting quite full and Kai slightly scolded himself for choosing the smaller alternative rather than go for the shopping cart.

At the same time, Kai didn’t feel like hulling around the larger option… admittedly, because he believed it would make him look kind of lame.

Though, carrying around an almost overflowing hand carrier didn’t particularly make him so “cool” either.

It was time to check out, seeing as though Kai was finished going through the health section and waited in line as the cashier began to ring out the items. He impatiently tapped his foot, slightly due to his boredom, but, also, due to the fact that he wanted to get out of there as fast as he could so he could just proceed to do the other tasks on his list.

Thankfully, it didn’t take too long as the worker did his job quickly and Kai handed him the won bill to cover the cost of the products. Without so much as a few words exchanged, the busy runaway took the square shaped bag and headed outside as he now had the task of buying some more clothes on his to-do list.

Kai paced through the sidewalks of Seoul and his attention was caught by a flashing sign which advertised some cell phones that the technology outlet had.

… That’s right, I need a cell phone…

Figuring he had nothing to lose, Kai sauntered on over to the outlet store and was briefly hit with a blast of cool air-conditioned wind. He turned his head in all degrees to scan the area and take in its crisp clean white color scheme. The bright fluorescent lights overhead lit the area and there were masses of bodies scattered throughout the entire store. Cases made of transparent glass protected the many models of mobile phones the business had in stock as people flocked over the boxes to gawk at some of the impressive designs.

Letting out a sigh, Kai walked on over to a sales person who was standing aside to wait on any potential customers and answer any questions. He turned to the tall teenager as he smiled. “Welcome sir, how are you today?”

“Fine, thanks, so… I need a phone,” Though the statement was a bit obvious – considering Kai walked into the phone section of the outlet store – the salesperson nodded and continued asking, “Is there a particular phone that you would like?”

This caused the impulsive young man to think a little bit, trying to figure out himself what kind of communication device he wanted.

… It would be ideal to get a cool smart phone… but, most of them require a contract… which would mean putting down information… which Kai couldn’t risk doing.

Perhaps he would opt for a prepaid phone since all it required was a mobile phone which was designed for the plan and refill cards.

… But… smart phones are pretty cool…

“Is there an android phone or smart phone that can take prepaid?” The older man blinked at Kai’s request and made a thinking pose before snapping his fingers and nodding his head. “Why, yes, we do. We have quite a selection, actually,” There was a slight pause before the business suit clad employee asked, “Are you a university student?”

“Um… yeah,” Kai fibbed – well it wasn’t a complete fib, but, as of now, he wasn’t.

“Well, did you ever considering getting a plan?” Kai was put on the spot as he was faced with the question he had thought of, before. He pressed his lips as he nodded. The salesman responded almost immediately, “So, since I’m sure you’ll be busy and all, you’ll most likely want a plan. I’m sure you’ll be texting and calling quite often, so I highly recommend one of our unlimited special deals for students.”

“But… doesn’t that require a contract and I have to put down information?” He tried to make the situation sound as less suspicious as possible. “I… don’t have a definite place to stay yet, so I don’t think I can provide much info,”

“That’s perfectly fine. We have no contract plans which simply just need your name.” Hearing the almost miraculous life-saving news, Kai had to remind himself to stop gaping as he wanted to confirm the words. “Really?”

“Yes, that’s perfectly fine. If you’ll follow me, sir, I’ll show you some of the most popular models and, then, I’ll go over the plans with you,” Kai obediently followed as he nodded his head and couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.

I’ll be able to call Soo Yun now…

Pacing around in her bedroom, a worried teenage girl felt that it would be another sleepless night again due to her immense worry for her boyfriend who was currently missing.

He had called to reassure her that he was fine and his velvety voice was so soothing, the girlfriend was immediately calmed after hearing it. They were able to talk for a bit, about how their lives were going, but, of course, the main topic of their talk was what the runaway was going to do and what would happen.

Jong In…

The hurt girl was crushed to hear that her lover was engaged to someone else, despite the parents knowing about the couple’s almost two year relationship. His mother and father seemed to know that the two were in love, but…

I guess… I wasn’t wife material for Jong In… or daughter material for his parents…

She could clearly remember the events that had taken place about a few weeks ago. Jong In had sworn that he would find a way to get out of his predicament and that the two could continue being together – but, who knew that the solution was running away?

Though Jong In’s girlfriend couldn’t help but feel touched that he truly cared for their relationship, she couldn’t help but feel a bit responsible as well and, honestly, she just wanted his safety.

Jong In… when will you call me again?

“Soo Yun! It’s dinner time!”

“Okay!” As Soo Yun had turned off her phone, blackening the screen which had showed a picture of the two happily smiling together, she took off to go downstairs and eat supper.

Perhaps being with her family would be able to distract her… even if it was just for a bit.

Jong In… please be alright…

Whoo~! New chapter! ^o^

So, I'll most likely be updating this story within every two weeks or so?

Hrmm... progress seems kind of slow, no? But, it's all about development and, I assure you, my fellow readers, the good stuff will come soon enough! (I can't help but question myself at times, too, though ^^')
Maybe you guys were able to catch onto some subtle hints I've been putting in my story to find out more about the characters and their backgrounds? Okay, now I'm just rambling on here, hehe~ I've also noticed that, sometimes, I'll get all descriptive, but then be a bit lazy and go all simple on you all. I'm being a bit critical of myself... that is all~ xD

Let me know your thoughts by commenting!
1. Is the story going too slow for your liking?
2. What do you think of the characters?
3. Do you like the story, so far?

(Don't feel limited by these questions~ x3)

As always, feel free to comment, subscribe, criticize, etc. (Flaming isn't nice, though ;_;)
Your comments really make my day and I love reading what you're all thinking or have to say~ ^^

Chapter 12: Baekhyun and Chanyeol seemed to built an interesting relationship from here. I thought Chanyeol would be smacked and hit or something or Baekhyun would jump into conclusion and something. But this is nice too !
Okay, to answer your questions :
1. Nice, I've always been a fan of slow character development, so I like it. So far, there's nothing weird with how any character is behaving, they act normal. Like Kai, normal as in, he acts as the mysterious person that he is who doesn't like his life being pried by anyone unless he wants them to. But still, Miya is still too gullible and naïve and kind to my liking.
2. I don't know. Maybe she ran away from home since her parents were always fighting ? Or her parents divorced and she decided not to come with any of them ? It's up to you though.
3. Well, obviously, the hero and heroine will eventually fall in love with each other, in this case it's Kai and Miya. But I'd like it if Chanyeol develops feeling for Miya and she does as well. They would date. And Kai finds out that Soo Yun was cheating on him with Sehun. Then that would be the start of KaixMiya's romantic relationship.
Lol, me and my imagination. Don't mind me !!!!!! XD update soon though, I love this story. :*
