DAY ONE

Subarashiki Sekai

Immediately after school on March first, I headed over to J-Storm for my first day as a Johnny's idol. When I got there, I didn't have time to change out of my uniform because training started at four. I was nervous. Really nervous.

I walked into the dance room I was told to go to and found it filled with other girls, all my age and older. Most were sitting on the floor while others were standing up against the mirrors. Quickly, I found an empty spot of floor next to the mirror and sat down in the loud echoing room. I wasn't the only gaijin, but I was still really nervous. About ten minutes after me getting there, a middle aged man walked into the room and got everybody to be quiet and pay attention.

"Konnichiwa," the man said to everyone. "Ikeda desu. Welcome to your first training session with Johnny's Entertainment. You've made it through the auditions, but now comes an even more critical part. Over the course of this week, we're going to be testing every one of you and see what your strengths are. If you can dance, if you can sing, and if you can get along with everyone you are put to work with. If we find you are lacking in talent, we're sorry to say that we will have to remove you from our company."

The entire room lit up from hearing that news. My heart sunk. I wasn't very good at dancing! If I couldn't dance, then it could mean that I would have to go back home with nothing to show for the hard work that I had already put in.

"Starting today, we're going to put you in pairs," Ikeda continued. When I call your name, then you stand up with your partner, we'll give you a song, and you'll have to both sing and dance to it. You can make up the dance as you go, or dance along to the original choreography." He took a clipboard and looked at the first name on the list. "Park Sora-san."

The girl who stood up looked absolutely terrified as she made her way to the empty dance floor next to Ikeda.

"Paired with you will be Roux Kamilla."

Everyone turned and some gasped when they saw the girl who step forward. She was one hard to miss. She had light skin, blue eyes, and literal blue hair. She seemed less nervous than Sora did, but Sora just seemed terrified to be there. Who could blame her?

"We'll give you a song," Ikeda told them as he stood off to the side. He pressed play on the stereo system, and the song that came on was no other than 'Magic Power' by Hey! Say! Jump! How unfair! I thought. This was an easy song!

But it looked painful. Kamilla at least knew the dance and was able to make something good up if she didn't know what came next. Sora was just trying to keep up with Kamilla, but she was struggling a little bit. You could tell that dancing was not something Sora did. Sora had a nice voice though, and I don't know if Kamilla was singing or not because it was soft on her side. After the song was over, the two didn't say a word and they sat back down on the floor. Everyone applauded them.

"Next," Ikeda said. "Ki Sasaki-san and Suzuki Aiko-san."

Two girls stood up and took their spot in the middle of the floor where Sora and Kamilla stood. The song picked was 'Rescue' by KATTUN. Both girls looked lost for a minute before one of them started dancing. The same thing happened. I had only seen the music video once for this song, but the two were just dancing along with the original choreography. I was kinda hoping others would do original pieces, but it had to be harder than it looked. And neither girl was singing. Some of the girls sitting down watching were singing quietly along, and one of them I recognized as Nuria Barreto, the girl that went ahead of me in the auditions. She was singing, so I guessed she was a KATTUN fan.

"Next two," Ikeda announced when the two sat down. "Harada Kotone-san...."

A girl about my age with brown hair and glasses stood up and went to the dance floor. She, like me, was also still in her school uniform although hers was the sailor style while mine was more formal. We were probably the only two that hadn't changed. She looked nervous but hid it well.

"...and Bonson Amanda-san."

My heart stopped. Uh oh, I thought as I carefully stood up and went to the dance floor. Kotone nodded to me as I stood next to her, and I nodded back. Please give me a good song, I prayed. Please give me a good song!

The song that started I felt like God had finally listened to me. Both me and Kotone released our breaths of nerves and I couldn't help but smile. Our song was 'Happiness' by Arashi. Nervously, me and Kotone started to dance and we started singing. I started singing expecting her to follow me, but instead I sang the first part while Kotone sang the second part and we both sang the chorus. Not knowing what else to do, we too danced along to the choreography, but we added some other steps to it too. I couldn't help but smile as we made our way through it. In the end, we added some air guitar as a Yamada Taro reference.

When we were done, everyone was laughing and applauding and having fun. The power of Arashi, I thought.

"THAT'S IT!" Ikeda-san yelled suddenly. Everyone got quiet as he came over to us. "That is what I want from everyone. I want you all to have fun. We're a fun company, so don't look so scared to death." He turned to us. "Good job girls."

Both me and Kotone bowed to him before sitting down again.

It was probably an hour before all the girls in the room had gone and danced. Ikeda stood up again and stood in front of us. "Everyone, good job today! You all did very well. Now, I want you all to remember who your partner was for this exercise. They will be your partner for the rest of training. You will all have to get along. If you two don't, try to stay away from each other or just deal with it and move on. I will not be spending any of my time trying to deal with your problems. Understand?" Everyone nodded. "Good. You're all excused now. Be back here tomorrow."

Everyone stood up and got ready to leave. I decided to wait until everybody else had left, and during that time my partner came up to me. "Amanda-san?" she asked. "Harada Kotone desu."

I nodded to her. "Hajimemae."

"Are you a fan of Arashi?" she asked. When I nodded, Kotone smiled. "I thought so. You looked happy when we were dancing."

"Arigatou!" I told her. "So did you."

"I'm a big fan of Arashi," she told me. "Do you have to go home right away?"

I shook my head. "No, not really."

--

Me and Kotone found a small cafe nearby and decided to spend some time there talking and getting to know one another. Kotone was from Osaka and she had a large family. Four siblings and her parents. "Sugoii!" I told her when our drinks came. "I only have one brother, and one's enough for me."

"I love my family," Kotone explained. "I wouldn't change anything about it for the world. They may make me want to kill them every once in a while, but its not that bad."

I had to laugh at the last part. At that moment, I looked up as the cafe door opened. "Hey look," I told her. "Isn't that Sora-san?"

And it was. Sora Park had come into the cafe, probably for the same reason as us. "Should I call her over here?" I asked Kotone. She nodded, so I flagged her down. "Sora-san!"

Sora looked over at us and came over. "Amanda desu," I introduced myself. "We're both in Johnny's."

"I know," Sora said. "You two were the best dancers of the day."

I sat back down, and Sora willingly sat down next to me. "Kotone desu," Kotone told her. "Yorushiku."

"Yorushiku," Sora replied. "I'm a little surprised you two remembered me."

"I remember everybody," I told her. "And it's hard to remember you when your partner has blue hair."

Sora sighed. "Am I the only one who finds it weird?" she asked. "I couldn't believe a person would have blue hair! I was surprised and shocked for a minute. I can't get used to it!"

"You'll have to," Kotone said. "You're stuck with her."

As Sora sighed again, I decided to try to get to know her. "Sora-san, where are you from?"

"I'm from Busan, South Korea," she answered, and both me and Kotone were surprised. "My mother signed me up for the Johnny's auditions. She's Japanese and my father is Korean, and they own a cafe in Busan. I couldn't believe my mother would sign me up for the auditions because I had already auditioned for another company in Seoul. In the end, though, I'm a little happy she did."

Until about six o'clock, that was how we spent our time together: talking and getting to know each other. I was relieved to find a couple of friends who were going through the same thing I was! Now, Johnny's Entertainment didn't look so scary.
