Warm Winter of January 10th
Our House [One-Shot/Drabble Collection]“Junhee, are you awake?” The fact that Kris isn’t bothering to lower her voice in the wee hours of morning startles Junhee from her dreamland of memories.
Junhee makes a disgusting sound that scares herself more than Kris and takes her velvet eye mask off. She squints at Kris who stands in the doorway; back straight and arm leaning against the door frame. Kris gives a wave with her free hand and Junhee is debating throwing her pillow at her.
Junhee curses in her head and makes a disappointing sound with her tongue, “What are you—? No, Kris, I was asle—”
“Good you’re awake.” Kris confirms with a nod and makes her way over to Junhee.
Junhee blinks, muddled. Even when her bed shakes like an earthquake due to Kris climbing on, she’s confused. Junhee glances at her clock that reads one-something in the morning; she looks back at Kris who has made herself comfortable under Junhee’s comforter and fluffed up on her puffy pillows. Junhee yanks her eye mask off her head and slams it onto her comforter with a huff. “Kris, why are you here?”
Kris gives her a smile that she can only describe as cozy. “I’m here because I was looking for a place to—”
“Kris.” Junhee tries to sound scarier, but she comes off whiny instead. “I’m talking about why you’re in my room.”
“Specifics. Why do you not—” but Junhee groans over the rest of Kris’ sentence as she slams her body back onto her bed, her shoulder bumping into Kris’. Kris makes a fake noise identical to a cry but Junhee only grunts in reply as she covers her eyes, fixes her comforter over her and lays still with a huff. She tries to ignore the wiggling woman next to her but it’s proving to be difficult when she feels her body edging closer and closer to the tip of her bed.
“Kris—”
“Move over it’s freezing in here and I need warmth.” Kris mumbles as she tucks herself close and personal next to Junhee who groans at the touch of Kris’ chilly skin.
Junhee rips the eye mask off, again, in annoyance and glares at Kris who freezes. “Well who’s the one that broke the air conditioner?” Junhee sneers.
Kris gasps in the fakest way possible. “Rude. I was trying to save us money.”
“You would save us money if you knew anything.” Junhee stresses with her eyes closed. “But you don’t, Kris.” Junhee opens her eyes and sits up, staring down at the frowning woman beside her. “In fact, you cost us more money. Why? You ask? Because you also caused damage to our water heater. We haven’t had hot water for two days, Kris. Two days!” Junhee shakes her fingers at Kris who sheepishly shrugs. Junhee releases a cry in sigh form. “Kyungri and I are clean people,”—Kris barks a laugh at that remark—“and it’s winter and it’s snowing and you know what? Out. Get out. Suffer for your mistakes as Kyungri and I are.”
Kris blinks at Junhee’s finger pointed at the door. She opens and says, “No.”
Junhee’s eyebrows grow closer together and the wrinkles on her forehead are more define. “Kris—”
“No.” Kris toots with a ghost of a smile as she tosses her body to rotate, taking half the comforter with her and giving Junhee her back.
Junhee drops her hand and sighs but a yawn sneaks in to make a strange sound. She shakes her head, too tired to deal with Kris’ shenanigans. She shoves whatever is left of the comforter off her legs and attempts to rise when she feels a cold hand gripping her wrist. Junhee peers over her shoulder at Kris who raises a brow at her.
“Since we’re doing this, might as well ask Kyungri to join.” Junhee answers Kris’ unspoken question.
“But she’s dead?” Kris lets out but quickly adds to her previous comment at Junhee’s shocked expression, “Asleep. She’s dead asleep. I tried knocking on her door, shouting her name in her ear and may have pushed her mattress halfway off her bedpost, too. Still didn’t wake.”
Junhee blinks dumbly at Kris. It dawns to her that her brain just processed every meaning of Kris’ words unlike prior of awakening and her body, once numb to the chilly air, feels the temperature in a wave of a strong gust. Junhee opens to speak but her inhale is shaky so she closes it and allows her eyes to look elsewhere. Her stomach feels empty but full; the same feeling she always got when she was on that one horrible diet years ago.
“She's fine, lay down.” The cold wind outside is but a soft murmur to Junhee’s ears, but Kris’ voice is on high volume to a stereo. “I’m not kidding it’s freezing. That weirdo Kyungri also had her window opened.” Junhee listens, in a daze, as Kris rants, “She’s insane I tell you. But I did shut it.” Kris gently takes a hold of Junhee’s body and pushes her onto the bed. She taps Junhee knees and Junhee’s legs lift themselves onto the bed where Kris covers her full body. Junhee feels to be dry and when she swallows it feels like she is swallowing needles and her stomach felt like something is alive in there, moving. Or is it her chest? Maybe she needs to use the restroom? Junhee dares to glance at Kris and when she does she feels that breathing is the most difficult thing in the universe.
Kris smiles softly and tells her goodnight before rotating Junhee’s body to face away from Kris.
Junhee feels, from the bed, Kris make herself comfortable before turning slightly to glance at Kris’ back. She looks down between them and notices Jennie sitting with her back against Kris. Junhee takes a quick glance at Kris before reaching over and taking Jennie. She moves back to her prior position and hugs Jennie to her palpitating heart.
Junhee whispers her goodnight.
