Truth

Destined Cards

I was in another vision. This time I was crouched down behind a door, peaking though the slit under one of its hinges. I stayed there so long that I lost track of time and was getting kind of bored. But I was too determined to move from my spot. A few minutes later I heard a door open then slam shut from above, followed by footsteps descending the stairs. I smiled as my target came into sight. With one foot in front of the other, my target walked towards the room that I was in.

Three…

My target was about to enter the room.

Two…

I quietly shuffled a bit so that I was in a good position to pounce. My Target passed the door.

ONE!

“WHAAAAA!” I jumped out and grabbed my target, screaming at the top of my lungs while doing so. But, my target didn’t flinch. Instead he just turned and gave me a really ‘unimpressed’ look. I recognized him from my first vision. The guy with the black beanie! Except, he wasn’t wearing a beanie this time- in fact, he looked completely different.

His now black hair was long, long enough to be put up in a ponytail. He wore a long black hoodie, light blue jeans and sneakers. In his hand was something that looked like a video game- must have been playing it when I tried to scare him

“Nice try, Heejun.” He patted my shoulder. “How many times has it been now? Sixty?”

“Sixty-FIVE actually.” I said with an ‘as a matter of fact’ tone.

“Yet you still can’t scare me.” The older man said as he looked back at him game to turn it off. “And you most likely never will.”

“Just you wait, hyung.” I pointed at him dramatically. “I WILL scare you one day! I WIIL!”

The older man just rolled his eyes and shook his head, but I still caught the small smile that grew before he turned away. “Suit yourself. How about you go scare someone else- Seungjun should be down soon.”

I felt myself grin excitedly before hopping back to my hiding spot. Sure enough, a few minutes later, another person walked down the hallway and into the room.

“Meehh!” I jumped out, grabbing my new target’s back. The man screamed at the top of his lungs and flinched away. When he turned my way his arms were crossed in front of him as he crouched over a bit.

He took one look at me and started laughing, eyes turning into crescents as he fell to the floor and hung his head. I could feel myself start to laugh as well. With one arm holding my stomach and the other pointing at him, I laughed in victory from finally scaring someone.

I recognized him as the tallest one from the first vision, who also had a really weird laugh; the same laugh he was using right now. Like his friend, he was different. Black hair covered his forehead as he sported a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, long blue jeans and black shoes.

“I scared Seungjunnie-hyung~” I started to sing and dance around the older man, who was still on the floor. Wait…. Seungjun? So THIS is the guy that Jungkook and V were friends with!

“Yah! Youjin-ah!” Seungjun yelled once he was calm enough. “You could have given me a warning if you knew that Heejun was here!”

The other man, who I now knew as Youjin, was just sitting down in a chair at the other end of the room- watching all of this unfold.

“If I did then it wouldn’t have been funny.” Youjin laughed and shrugged. Seungjun pouted before grumbling in response and standing up.

“Heejun-ah!” Youjin called out and I hopped over to him. “Where’s Jihun? I thought you two came in together?”

“Went out to buy snacks and coffee.” I replied. “Said something about doing a live feed of us eating and answering questions. What about Inseong-hyung?”

From what I remembered of the first vision; Inseong was the member that Heejun gave a wasabi dumpling to, and since Youjin and Seungjun were also there, that must mean that this ‘Jihun’ person was the guy with blond hair.

“He saw that the local bait shop was having a sale on fishing rods so he went to go buy one.”

I snorted at that. “That hyung is such a fishing geek.”

“Who’s a what-now?” A new voice joined in. I turned around and watched as a man walked in carrying two very large bags full of snacks and a tray with five cups of coffee. This must have been Jihun. Unlike having blond hair like I remembered from the first vision, it was a dark sandy brown with black roots. He wore a white shirt under a grey-ish blue plaid button down, dark blue skinny jeans and hi-tops.

“We were talking about Inseong-hyung.” I replied as he handed me one of the bags full of snacks. “He went to by another rod.”

“Again?” Jihun groaned, setting the other bag and tray on a table nearby. “He has, like, four already back at the dorm!”

“And now I have FIVE!” Inseong walked into the room with a proud smile on his face, holding up a green fishing rod like it was Excalibur. Unlike the others, Inseong still looked like he did in the first vision. But, instead of the pink apron, he had on a large white pull-over sweater, black skinny jeans and white shoes.

“We have enough for all of us to go fishing together!”

The four of us groaned at the thought, but Inseong just ignored them and set his brand new fishing rod gently against the wall.

We goofed around while we set up the snacks. Inseong and I were being overdramatic about the bags being ‘too hard to open’, Seungjun kept laughing at Jihun (even when Jihun wasn’t doing anything.), and Youjin would just sigh, shake his head and only laugh every now and then. It was nice, being around people that held such a tight bond and laughing. I could feel the brotherly bond between them and couldn’t help but wonder why Heejun didn’t laugh like that around me.

But it seems that all good things must come to an end at some point.

It happened right after Seungjun told us a funny story that he saw on the internet. Everything just suddenly stopped; like someone had pressed pause or something. I stood up in surprise and looked around, confused.

That’s when I saw the woman. She had long, curly dark brown hair, bright blue eyes, porcelain white skin and wore a pretty dark blue dress. She noticed me looking at her and gave me a small, sad smile.

“Sorry about interrupting your fun, Emory.” She said in a soft voice. “But there are a lot of people back in the real world that love you and are waiting for you to wake up.”

She stretched out her hand to me. “Let’s go show them that you’re alright.”

Slowly, I walked to her and gently grabbed her hand. Then, I closed my eyes and waited.

I didn’t open them until I heard the beeping. At first, the sudden sight of light was blinding and it took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust. I used my arms to feel around me and came to the conclusion that I was laying down in a bed. Though my neck was stiff, I turned my head and saw the familiar sight of a heart monitor and other machines.

I was in a hospital.

Hearing a sudden groan, I looked further down and found Heejun leaning on my bed with his head buried in his arms. Slowly, he sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.

“You’re awake.” He said once he saw me. His voice, like usual, sounded ‘matter of fact’ and ‘to the point’ which his face seemed to betray. He looked exhausted, worried and curious. After I replied with a nod; his eyes grew softer and he gave me a small smile.

Now he looked relieved.

“What happened?” I flinched at how scratchy my voice sounded.

   “You were being an idiot.”

“Huh?” I scrunched up my eyebrows and tried to think. Then it came to me; the knife. “Oh…”

“Just… what were you THINKING?” The soft look he had was gone, replaced by a hard, frustrated one. “I can heal fast! YOU can’t! A wound like that would have been NOTHING to me! But YOU almost DIED!!”

“I just didn’t want you to get hurt.” I replied softly. “Once I saw the guy pull out the knife everything just went away and all I could think about was getting to you in time.”

He stared at me with large eyes, not saying anything.

“I’m sorry about worrying you… but… even if you don’t think that your life matters.” I continued. “I think it does.”

Once again, he didn’t reply. I watched as his eyes searched my face, probably to see any signs of possible lying. But I conjured up the most serious face I could muster and looked him straight in the eye. After a brief pause, he sighed and leaned back in his chair.

“Just… don’t do it again… please...”

The way he looked at me filled my heart with guilt.

“I won’t.” I shook my head. “But you have to promise me that you’ll be more careful.”

“I will.” He replied immediately. Although a little surprised, I smiled in relief.

Then I remembered my vision. Now was a better time than never to tell him about it.

“Heejun…” He leaned a bit closer so I knew I had his full attention.

“About that time during lunch…” I started off trying my best to hide the nervousness in my voice. “You were right. I did see something that made me upset….”

It was now or never. I took a deep breath and looked at my fidgeting hands.

  “I’ve been having these… visions…. Lately… but they’re kind of… weird…”

  “Weird how?”

“When they happen it’s like I’m seeing them through someone else’s eyes. In them- I’m not ME anymore….” I looked up from my hands. “I’m YOU. Heejun…. I think… I think I’m seeing your memories….”

He patiently listened to me as I explained what I saw in the first two visions. The four men, the wasabi dumpling prank, even how scary the lady with the whip looked. Other than to confirm that the scary lady was a former master of his, Heejun stayed quiet the whole time; watching me with concentration.

“The last vision that I had just happened.” I went on. “Right before I woke up. It was longer than the others and had your Card Mates in it too.”

Heejun finally spoke up. “What did we do?”

“You were meeting up in a room that was similar to the first vision.” I replied. “Jihun was planning something that involved eating and answering questions, from who he didn’t say-“

“Wait.” Heejun cut me off. “What did you just say?”

“Huh?”

“The name you just said. What was it?”

“Oh.” I thought about what I just said. “Jihun?”

He nodded. “How do you know that?”

“You guys mentioned it a few times.” I blinked. “In fact, all of your names were mentioned. Seungjun, Inseong, Jihun, you and Youjin.”

Heejun’s mouth was open in surprise, eyes wide and large. “Wha~ you are seeing my memories…”

I frowned in annoyance at that. What did he think I was going on about this whole time?

He scooted closer. “What else happened?”

Sighing, I tried to remember.

“You attempted to scare Youjin, Which didn’t work-“

“hehe yeah… He was like a cyborg or something- not afraid of anything.”

“So you ended up scaring Seungjun instead….”

“That Hyung was a scardy-cat, wasn’t he?”

“Then Jihun came in with two big bags of snacks and coffee-“

“Right… he was a coffee-holic….”

“And everyone complained that Inseong was buying too many fishing rods-“

“Oh yeah!” He snapped his fingers. “I forgot that he was such a fishing geek!”

I raised my brow. “Why do you sound like you are now just remembering these things?”

“That’s because I am.” Heejun replied. “After living for so many years you tend to forget about things you used to know.”

“So… what do you remember?” I gave him a sad frown. He leaned back and crossed his arms in thought. “Mostly just what types of Masters that I had, how I learned how to use my powers, and only a few things about what I did as a human… but that’s mainly it.”

“Oh…” With the way that the conversation was going I tried to bring it back to the events of the last vision, but before I could tell Heejun about the weird woman the door to my hospital room opened. My sisters walked in and screamed with delight when they saw that I was awake. They rushed to my bed so quickly that Heejun had to jump out of the way in order to not get trampled.

“Do you KNOW how worried we all were?!” Allissa scolded with her hands place firmly on her hips. Rori was sobbing into my shoulder, being careful enough not to touch my wounded side. “Do you know how SHOCKED I was when I got a call from N telling me the you were in the hospital due to getting STABBED?! Of course he later explained that you were just trying to save Heejun, but just WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!”

I couldn’t help but flinch whenever her voice got louder, over Rori’s head I could see Heejun plugging his ears. If it wasn’t for the fact the Allissa was still yelling at me I would have questioned by he was acting a bit… over dramatic at the moment.

“Hey! Hey! Hey!” N rushed in with wide, alarmed eyes. He gently took my sister’s shoulders and pulled her back. “Calm down Alli… I’m pretty sure she understands now…”

He rubbed her shoulders as he led her to the now vacant chair to sit down. Allissa was panting, exhausted from yelling so much, and refused to take her eyes off of me.

“How you feeling, Eminem?” N turned to me with a caring smile, which I returned with a soft one.

“My side hurts…” I admitted, rubbing Rori’s back. “But doing good overall.”

“That’s a relief.” He sat down at the foot of my bed. “You were out for three days after the surgery. We were scared that you might never wake up.”

My eye brows scrunched up. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok.” He patted my ankle reassuringly.

“We’re just glad that you’re ok.” Allissa sniffed. Tears were now overflowing in her eyes as she tried to keep them from falling.

“What happened to the drunk men?” I asked curiously.

“After I sent Heejun off with you in an ambulance I stayed behind and told the police what had happened.” N explained. “They’re now locked up for attempt of murder and are awaiting their trail.”

I nodded slowly in understanding. Allissa had gotten up and was gently trying to unlatch Rori from me. “Where are the others?”

“Outside, waiting. The Doctor would only allow a few of us in at a time.” N replied softly. “Wanna see them?”

I nodded.

“Don’t worry.” Surprisingly, Heejun spoke up. “I’ll cover them.”

“Thanks, Heejunie!” N cheerfully said as he hopped back to the door. I gave Heejun a confused look. What did he mean by ‘cover for them’?

But before I could ask, the four missing Warriors pushed past N and quickly rushed to my left. Leo got there first and stared me down with a dark scowl. He was angry with me but also extremely worried.

“I’m ok.” I said in a soft voice, which seemed to make him relax with relief.

“Emory! Are you alright?!” V was at the foot of my bed. “Can you hear me?! Does your side hurt right now?! Can you see me?! How many fingers am I holding up-?!”

“Hyung!” Jungkook rushed to calm the older Warrior down. “She’s fine! See? She awake! And the doctor told us that she’ll be fully recovered in about two weeks.”

“Oh…” V laughed sheepishly. “Right…”

“Two weeks?” I frowned. “Does that mean I have to stay in the hospital for that long?”

“No, just a few more days.” Allissa reassured me as N sat back near my feet. “Then you’ll be discharged. But you’re to not go to school until then. Don’t look at me like that! You’re the one that got yourself hurt!”

“Consider it your punishment for doing something stupid.” Ravi didn’t attempt to mumble. I was about to glare at him, but instantly stopped once I saw the look on his face.

He was giving me a small smile that contrasted the tired, worried look in his eyes and the dark circles that hung beneath them. I quickly changed my glare to a lightened grin.

“Yeah. Guess I can’t help it.”

“And think of it this way…” Heejun gave me a sly smile. “You finally have an excuse for tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” I repeated. Then I gasped. Tomorrow must be the Anniversary! Allissa took note of the hopeful look on my face and nodded.

“Yes.” She sighed. “You won’t have to go.”

I let out a loud cheer that resulted in me doubling over in pain and Allissa scolding me for not being careful about my wound.

We talked a bit more until a knock was heard on my hospital room door. It slid open to reveal a woman wearing a lab coat.

“Sorry to say this, but visiting hours are going to be over in a few minutes.” She said with an apologetic smile. “Even though it’s a good thing that Miss Emory woke up, she still needs to get a good night’s sleep.”

“Right, guess we’ll be going then.” N rose up from his spot on my bed. “We’ll see you again tomorrow. Ok, Eminem?”

I nodded happily.

“Would the other four men that were waiting outside earlier like to pop in real quick and say hello?” The doctor asked. From the corner of my eye I saw V, Jungkook and Ravi all jump up in surprise. I watched in confusion as V clamped a hand over his mouth as he and Ravi started to softly tip-toe towards the door. Jungkook, looking like he was holding his breath, quietly followed while Leo just rolled his eyes and went after them. Just what in the world?

“Oh no.” N shook his head. “When they heard that Emory woke up they went back to the car to wait for us. So we should probably just go so they won’t have to wait any longer.”

The doctor, though a bit reluctant, nodded and moved out of the way so N and my sisters could exit the room.

“See you tomorrow, Ems.” Allissa looked back at me with a sniffing Rori in her arms. “We’ll be back as soon as we can, ok?”

“Ok.” I raised my hand a little to wave goodbye. Then they were gone, leaving me and Heejun alone with the Doctor. I turned and raised a brow at Heejun, but he just quietly shook his head, holding a finger up to his lips.

“Well, Miss Emory.” The Doctor walked over to me, completely ignoring the fact that Heejun was still there. “How’re you feeling?”

“My side feels a bit sore, but other than that I’m fine.” I replied.

She nodded and took out a syringe. “Sounds good! I’ll just inject this into your IV real quick and hopefully that’ll dull the soreness a bit so you can sleep. Ok?”

“Ok.” I smiled watching as she completed her task. Then she told me about what tests to expect in the morning before wishing me a good night’s rest and leaving. Finally, I had the chance to speak to Heejun again.

“Alright, spill.” I whispered to him. “Why did it look like she couldn’t see you?”

The doctor had also turned off the lights so I had to squint in order to see him sit down next to my bed.

“That’s because she couldn’t.” He explained. I thought for a bit.

“Wait…. Were you using your powers?”

He snorted. “Wow, took you long enough.”

I ignored the jab. “Is that what you can do? Make you and other people invisible?”

“Kind of.” He leaned back in the chair. “See, I’m a light-type Card. My specialty is using the light reflecting in people’s eyes to make illusions.”

“So you made yourself and the others invisible to her?” I asked slowly.

“Yep.”

“No wonder your Card has ‘The Trickster’ written on it.”

I almost gasped in surprise as he gave me the biggest real grin I’ve even seen on him and he laughed. Not just his usual forced laughs that he used around our classmates, but a real deep almost embarrassed laugh that a little boy would use when he’s admitting to something. It was similar to the laugh that I heard in my visions….

I was still in a surprised dazed when he stood up and pulled my blanket up to my chin.

“Go to sleep.” He softly ordered. “Wounds heal faster when your body is resting.”

“What about you?” I asked, concerned. He pointed to a couch that was lined up against the wall. “I can sleep there. Better than sleeping on the floor.”

I frowned at the couch. It was small and didn’t look all that comfortable. But I bit my tongue and watched as he laid down on it.

“Goodnight, Heejun…”

“Goodnight…. Emory.”

“See you in the morning?” My eyes were getting heavier. I think the injection was starting to get to me.

“Yeah. I’ll be here when you wake up… Don’t worry.”

I sighed just as everything quickly went black. Sleep quickly took over right before I could comprehend that Heejun just said my name… willingly for the first time since we’ve met.

As my days in the hospital slowly went on Heejun rarely ever left my side. If he did, then it was to go to the bathroom- which tended to be a very quick trip. His presence wasn’t unwelcoming or straining like it used to be though. In fact it was almost as if his attitude with me almost made a complete 180 degree flip.

He started talking a lot more and even asked me questions.

“Why does the male lion have a big fluffy mane and not the female?”

“What’s an ‘app store’ and how can I use it to play a game?”

“I know that humans have the technology to visit space, but have they found evidence of life beyond Earth yet?”

“What’s an imaginary number and who’s the idiot that thought it would be a good idea to use it in math?”

Although a bit weirded out, I didn’t complain and happily answered all of his questions to the best of my knowledge. It provided a distraction from the pain in my side and the boredom that I felt while lying in a bed all day.

Another thing that I noticed about him was that he seemed to always have his powers on. Of course whenever my sisters, the other Warriors, and our friends came to visit then he would let them see him. But whenever a nurse or a doctor came in we all had to act like he wasn’t in the room. Star and Addie, who always came to visit after school to deliver homework, noticed it too and asked him about it.

“I’d rather be invisible the whole time than have them question why they never see me coming and leaving.” He explained with a bored shrug. It made sense to us, so we let it go.

But I was worried. Every time I looked at him he seemed to look more and more tired. I had a hunch that using his powers all the time was taking a toll on his body so, the night of my first day back home, I suggested going back to his Card to recharge for the night.

At first he seemed a bit skeptical but I could tell that he was thinking it over.

“You’ll let me out once morning comes?”

I frantically nodded and held out my hand. “I pinky promise that I will!”

He looked crossed eye at my littlest finger. “You…. What?”

“You don’t know what a pinky promise is?” I gaped as he shook his head. “If I ever did, then I don’t remember.”

I frowned a bit at that. “Here. Give me your hand.”

Though confused, he complied. I grabbed it and twisted my pinky with his.

“If you ever make a promise that you intend to keep…” I started to explain. “Then you do this as a sign that you’ll keep it. Then you make a seal.”

I stuck out both of our thumbs and arched our hands a bit so that they touched.

“There! Pinky promise complete!”

He gave me a half amused half exasperated smile. “Ok, then. See you tomorrow?”

“I’ll be here to wake you up.” I reassured him. We didn’t break our gaze until he dematerialized before me- going back into his Card.

“Goodnight, Heejun…” I whispered to it before gently placing it on my night stand and turning off the light.

The next morning I was woken up by the sun shining through my bedroom window. I yawned, my hand-which had ended up under my pillow as I hugged it- moved a bit and touched something. Surprised, my eyes opened wide and I lifted up my pillow. Underneath was a Card.

At first I thought it was Heejun’s, until I looked over at my nightstand to find his Card still there; exactly where I had put it last night.

Cautiously, I picked it up and gave it a closer look. The back was almost exactly the same- black back ground, four gold triangles in the middle- the only difference was that the gold décor that lined the border was a bit wispy compared to Heejun’s. When I turned it to the front I recognized the random gold lines that covered the Warrior’s picture and the box underneath them which held two words, written in the same thin, gold lettering: The Dancer.

Didn’t take a lot for me to see that it was one of Heejun’s Deck Mates.

Because of my discovery I quickly kissed Heejun out of his Card and waited impatiently for him to materialize. He needed to see this.

“Wow!” He stretched his arms. “No wonder you guys call that ‘recharging’! I feel like my energy level’s at 100%!”

“Morning, Heejun!” I quickly greeted before looking back down to the new Card. “So… umm… I don’t know how to really say this but… guess what I found under my pillow this morning?”

He blinked. “What?”

I lifted up the Card so that Heejun could see it. His face went from curious to shock in mere seconds.

“Hyung?!”

Hey ya'll! Sorry that this is sort of a short chapter. Just thought that it ended nicely with the cliff hanger. hehe. And I know that the time line is a bit confusing since it shows that Heejun and the rest of KNK had internet when they were humans. Let's just say that I did that on purpose. It involves the question "how did humans become Warriors in the first place?"

But other than that, what Warrior do ya'll think is in the Card this time? I'd love to hear your guesses so please comment on the bottom!

Like this story? Give it an Upvote!
Thank you!
