Along Came a Prince

“HELP!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!”

In the middle of the vast verdant forest, amongst the lush canopy of foliage that towered high above the fertile ground, there lay a soft featured yet exceedingly loud princess; tangled within a web of crimson curtains and purple bed sheets. Lu Han having luckily survived the fall from the tower now faces a new dilemma as he helplessly dangles from his makeshift rope.

Suffering from a few cuts and bruises as he breached the thick, forest ceiling, the battered princess was fortunate enough that the traitorous clothe that was supposed to serve as his lifeline in his descent managed to wind itself around Lu Han’s flailing limbs and snag on the thorny branches of the tree tops. At first, Lu Han thanked his lucky stars as he saw how far up he still was when the twisted mess of silken fabric managed to halt his nearly fatal free fall. Kyungsoo and Baekhyun could only look up at the suspended deer with concern as they made a safe landing of their own, down on the forest floor. Lu Han’s relief was briefly lived, though, as he found that he had no way of getting himself out of the slightly uncomfortable network of chafing draperies.

With his limbs splayed out around him and locked by the materials that wound all over his body, the best the flustered deer could do was to thrash in vain as the life-saving security the webbing provided now worked against Lu Han’s wishes to get free. Even with Kyungsoo’s aide, it seemed that no matter how much the wide-eyed barnyard owl nipped and tugged at the threading it would remain firmly in place. The best Kyungsoo could do was to unfurl the other end of the lengthy rope to reach the ground in hopes that, with the addition of Baekhyun, they could at least loosen the fabricated python’s hold on their increasingly frustrated princess. But once again, the netting didn’t so much as disturb a single leaf from its purchase amongst the trees.

Thinking quick, Kyungsoo decided that they would need help and flew off to find anyone or anything that could provide the necessary force to aid the dangling deer. After assuring Lu Han that this is the only way and telling the currently brown pup to stay put and watch over their princess, Kyungsoo made his way towards the east as he promised that he would find help in no time.

Not long after the owl made his departure, Baekhyun started to grow restless; even changing his fur into a brighter amber color. Yelping that it would be better if two of them searched at the same time, the young pup took off in the opposite direction as Kyungsoo, despite Lu Han’s alarmed protests. Currently alone and progressively irritated, the abandoned deer could only yell and holler for anyone to hurriedly come to his aid; not really realizing who, or what, might be listening in.

“Jesus! When those two come back, I swear to God, I will-“

“Well, well, well, what do we have here?”

Lu Han’s grumbling was abruptly disturbed by a smooth, and menacing voice coming from down below. Straining his neck to peer at the unusually still, green carpet, Lu Han could make out a hulking figure making its way towards the center of Lu Han’s line of sight. The stranded deer’s heart began to race and started to break out into a cold sweat as he slowly registered the sandy brown creature that was now regarding him with a sly and slightly hungry look.

“N-nothing to see here, Mr. Wolf; I’m j-just waiting for some friends…” Lu Han gulped as he noticed the wolf’s slightly hooded and piercing gaze, as well as the wolfish grin that showed his dagger-like teeth for obvious display. Lu Han didn’t need to ask about grandma’s eyes and teeth to know where this was going.

“I see~ and where are these friends of yours?”

“W-well…Ummm… T-they are-they’re looking for help to get me down...”

“Hmmm… Maybe I could offer my assistance to such a lovely young princess, such as yourself!” Lu Han didn’t trust the way the wolf’s eyes suddenly brightened at the prospect of having the deer at ground level. Now clinging to the very shackles that got him into this predicament, he tried to think of a way out of this one as he did not want his friends to be anywhere near this suspicious predator.

“T-That won’t be necessary, Mr. Wolf, as my friends will be here in no time. In fact, I believe one of my friends is most probably going to fetch the wood cutter who lives nearby!”

Amused by the tasty deer’s obvious attempt at intimidating him away, the wolf languidly approached the dangling fabric that reached the base of the tree. “Nice try Little Red but you know as well as I that there are no wood cutter’s near this area. It’s just you and me, princess; alone in these woods.”

The chill that travelled down Lu Han’s spine had less to do with his cramp-inducing position and more with the salivating animal addressing him with a feral and starving glint in his eyes. The frantic deer started to look around, trying to find any means of escape from the cunning creature, when suddenly he felt his clothed chains slacken and the all too familiar feeling of falling through open air returned.

Landing with an “oof” on a soft patch of grass, Lu Han winced as he rubbed his bruised bottom which first came into contact with the unexpectedly soft earth. It was only after feeling a hot, coiling breath on his nape did Lu Han realize that he was not out of danger yet. Snapping quickly to his feet and abruptly turning around, Lu Han gave himself a headache as he now saw two famished canines regarding him with voracious brown eyes as his head was now swimming and his vision doubling.

Steadying his head, Lu Han slowly backed away from the wolf as he desperately looked for an out; knowing that there was no chance in hell that he could out run a forty pound beast built for chasing down their prey.

“N-now, look here Mr. Wolf! My f-friends are definitely coming back anytime now, s-so don’t you dare try anything funny.” Lu Han gave a yelp of surprise as he felt himself stumbling over an exposed root. Now at eye level, the frightened deer could only crawl his way back as he can see the full intimidating height of his would-be predator.

“Who says that I will be trying anything funny? I just want to make sure that you don’t smell as delicious as I hope you to be.” The wolf snarled at Lu Han as the princess was finally at the end of rope. Feeling the harsh notches of tree bark digging into his back, Lu Han could only cower in fear at the slowly approaching beast. Seeing the flash of unadulterated hunger deep within the wolves eyes, Lu Han could only look away; foolishly exposing his enticing neck to the growling animal.

Lu Han could feel the wolf recoiling as if preparing to pounce at the trapped deer. He could feel how the soft earth braced itself from the full weight being applied near the beast’s noticeably strong and sinewy hind legs. He could feel the sandy brown fur on its sensuous and slightly muscular back standing up on its ends as it anticipates plunging into its helpless prey. He could feel the warm, dense breath passing through its expectedly razor sharp and lethally pointed teeth as it bares its fangs that would soon sink in the soft, supple flesh of a poor, naïve deer.

As the calculating wolf lunged its whole body towards the exposed, young princess, Lu Han’s last thoughts were of his poor, dear friends and of how much he wants to tell that smug Kyungsoo that he was so totally right about dying in the woods, alone.

I ING TOLD YOU, YOU STUPID OWL!!!”

Lu Han dejectedly made his way towards the principal’s office at the other end of the school building; feeling slightly irritated by the string of events that led towards his impending punishment. With his head hung low and adorably pouting at the floor, Lu Han couldn’t help but think that the awful things that have been happening so far were not his fault.

It isn’t his fault that he forgot about his text books all because of certain people and a certain hairstyle that were distracting him at the time. It wasn’t his fault that people paid him unnecessary amounts of attention when they could just mind their own business and leave poor Lu Han alone. It wasn’t his fault that the love of his life chose a very striking and highly noticeable hair color to have a over.

It wasn’t his fault that he is obsessed with a certain ice prince called, Oh Sehun!

 Who, speaking of which…

“MIND YOUR OWN ING BUSINESS, KAI!”

 “SEHUN, WAIT!”

The pensive princess suddenly stopped dead in his tracks as he heard an awfully familiar voice which was suspiciously approaching his direction, if he was not mistaken.

 “I SAID LEAVE ME ALONE!”

With eyes bulging wide at the striking familiarity of the voice, Lu Han debated with himself if the voice truly is from his one true beloved or if the excessive amount of stress he has been receiving lately finally made him snap; making him hear voices in his head. As he comes to the conclusion that he needs to see the school shrink immediately, his heart suddenly stopped at the vision of tall, brooding teenage angst that was now making its way around the corner.

 Oh Sehun.

Just like in a fairytale, there was a moment in Lu Han’s mind where time seemed to slow down as who took in the full gravity of the experience that is Oh Sehun. His chiseled jawline that would fit perfectly in the gentle cradle of his soft hands as he rubs his thumbs over it in reverence; his luscious full lips that he could drown with sweet precious kisses from dawn till dusk till dawn again and again; his piercing dark eyes that could gaze into the inner crevices of his soul and command him to be his for all eternity; and his black wavy hair that he could only dream to comb with his thin delicate fingers as Sehun places his gorgeous head on his awaiting lap looking up at Lu Han with so much love and longing that the deer’s heart would surely burst through his chest.

Yes, it is only Oh Sehun that could make Lu Han stop from breathing in air as his presence alone is enough to sustain the love sick princess. It is only Oh Sehun that could make Lu Han’s heart stop from beating entirely and have it set to the tantalizing rhythm of his own heart. It is only Oh Sehun that could make Lu Han’s believe in every fairytale and love story that he has ever read since he was a small child. It is only Oh Sehun who could evoke such sickeningly sweet and exceedingly idealistic notions from the hopelessly romantic princess.

And it is only Oh Sehun who could look at someone with so little emotion as if they were nothing more than an insignificant bug on the windshield that is his life.

The same look he was giving Lu Han now.

 Wait. What?

Sehun only gave Lu Han a slightly curious glance before setting his features in his trade mark poker face; making his way around the petrified deer, hastily. It was only when Sehun rounded the corner did Lu Han start to thaw, or freeze depending on who you’re asking. No wonder they called Sehun the ice prince; Lu Han felt the cold front from Sehun’s cold shoulder, covering his once bright and dreamy heart with harsh stinging ice.

Moisture started to collect in Lu Han’s eyes as he could only stare in disbelief at how his prince looked at him. He couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t believe how cold and indifferent Oh Sehun treated him. He had always believed that there was something between the two of them; believing that when they finally do meet face to face, there would be a spark of recognition in his eyes that tells him that he has found the one. But with the way Sehun regarded him a while ago, it is as if Lu Han did not exist at all.

As if he was a slight annoyance in his daily schedule. As if he was an insignificant detail in the overall order of things. As if he was the uninteresting wall flower that he has always wanted to be so that everybody would just leave him alone.

Well I guess wish granted, you idiot!

Lu Han bitterly thought as he slumped to the ground, unable to keep himself up as his legs gave out after receiving the most world shattering revelation his poor, young mind could take. His vision started to blur as the moisture turned into full blown tears that were silently streaming down his cheeks. Lu Han was too far gone in his own self-pity that he did not even notice the pair of shoes that were now slowly approaching his crumpled form.

 “Lu Han?!”

Lu Han didn’t even dare to raise his head as he knew that seeing another face would only turn his silent waterfalls into a gushing, torrent of undiluted emotions. It wasn’t until soft nimble fingers started to gently tip his chin up that he finally recognized the voice that was b with concern. The devastated princess was met with warm brown eyes; finally breaking down when the same fingers started to wipe the tears trailing down his face with so much gentleness and care that he felt treasured and cherished.

Throwing himself in the arms of his new found protector, Lu Han let out a deluge of tears. He sobbed and clung at the man’s chest, most probably ruining his unlikely savior’s uniform with how much he was soaking and wrinkling the poor shirt and jacket. Lu Han’s protector didn’t mind though. He didn’t mind that Lu Han’s ugly crying has now ruined his crisp white dress shirt with the amount of salt water and snot that the fabric has absorbed. He didn’t mind Lu Han’s startlingly sharp nails digging into his skin and most likely leaving crescent shaped marks in its wake. He didn’t mind Lu Han’s incomprehensible sobs as he could only give the inconsolable Chinese princess words of encouragement and pats of reassurances.

“It’s alright, Lulu, everything is gonna be alright. Shh-shhh~ I’m here now, Lu.”

 “H-how d-d-do you kn-kno-ow th-hat it w-will be a-alrigh-ght?”

As Lu Han gazed up at his inadvertent savior, he couldn’t help but feel comforted after seeing the softness of his eyes and the warmth of his smile as he peered down at what must be an unattractive wreck. He can’t help but feel secured, valued, and even loved when met with such an angelic expression from a man he has called the devil on more than one occasion. “Because I’ll make it so that everything will be alright.” The strong deep voice gave no room for doubt, as the statement rang clear and true in Lu Han’s mind. More than just comforting words, these were more like a promise, an unbreakable commitment, that would be honored no matter what.

Lu Han was taken aback by the maturity and manliness his usually childish and cocky protector was now showing him. He was shocked really that he was capable of this; he would totally keep a look out for any other potential alternate personas his savior would manifest in the future. But, despite Lu Han’s now growing concern of paranoid schizophrenia, one thing is for sure.

I definitely like this side better.

He was slowly soothed by the constant rubbing he was receiving by the nimble fingers that were carefully tracing smooth circles on his back. He gave a soft smile as he continued to enjoy the strong arms that were currently wrapped around his lithe form and the sturdy chest that he was using as a pillow. He can’t help but slightly chuckle at the irony of the situation seeing as he was now being consoled, quite effectively, by the same man that unwittingly caused this whole mess.

Giving in to the sweet bliss only unconsciousness could provide, Lu Han fell into a peaceful slumber in the embrace of his protector. Realizing that the exhausted princess was now fully asleep in his arms, he gave a soft, endearing chuckle before carefully lifting up Lu Han, bridal style. Not even minding how surprisingly heavy the small man is, Lu Han’s tanned-skin savior would only laugh at the random mumblings of a tuckered out deer.

 “Thanks Jongin…. Looks like I won’t kill you…. Yet…”

The hallways rang with the loud boisterous laughter of Kim Jongin as he made his way towards the nurse’s office; today was turning out to be quite tiring and bothersome for him, Sehun, and now apparently Lu Han. But, as he continued to tenderly gaze at the sleeping beauty in his arms, he started to feel the stress of this morning’s event slowly ebb away. He couldn’t help but develop a soft spot for the poor deer as he is undoubtedly hopelessly in love with the annoying brat and it is quite endearing to see how much love the small Chinese princess had in his petite body.

Oh Sehun sure is lucky to have caught Lu Han’s attention, or not depending on whom you’re asking.

“I sure hope that you’re worth it kid; otherwise, there will be hell to pay.”

The cavernous hall of SM High’s cafeteria was the epitome of sophistication and extravagance. With draped floor-to-ceiling windows set in regular intervals around the room, bright natural light filtered through in abundance, providing an ethereal and aery feel in the otherwise suffocating atmosphere. The hall was further accented by posh crystal chandeliers dangling from the high ceiling reflecting not only the iridescent glow of the sun but also illuminated the space with its own artificial lights, bathing the entirely space with warm inviting radiance.

The students’ leather clad footsteps clattered along the polished marble-lined flooring as they made their way across the room, carrying trays of chef prepared meals as they settled down with their friends to unload the regular grouses of their usual morning bustle. They crowded intricately ornate waist high long tables that are adorned with complicated swirls and patterns along its mahogany-carved periphery, filling the space with their clinking silverware and incessant chatter.

Comfort came in the form of finely upholstered decorative chairs with velvety soft paddings that managed to ease away the soreness that came with sitting down on harsh unforgiving desk chairs for majority of the day. Most likely cut from the same wood as their luxuriant table tops, the whole set up gave the students the whole five-star fine dining experience as they are treated to not only home grown Korean cuisine but also authentic international options for the more cultured palette.

The ostentatious lunch hall also came with its own student lounge that provided students the means to relax and unwind whenever they feel the daily stress of academic life getting to them. Set in one of the corners of the cafeteria, the lounge is demarcated by an elevated wooden platform which houses stylish leather couches and soft plushy settees amongst a vast array of amenities that could soothe the most troubled soul. Complete with a flat screen TV-slash-gaming station, a touch screen jukebox filled with both classic and pop music, an extensive coffee and espresso bar, and an internet hub with high end desktops set along sleek countertops protruding from the walls, this little paradise provides students the chance to loosen up after a long day of scholastic struggles.

Indeed, SM High spared no expensive when it came to providing its students luxury and comfort expected from an institution of such esteem. The cafeteria has been one of the school’s best selling points as it provides students a miniature oasis from the unyielding dessert that is their dreary academic sufferings. That is why it was such an odd sight to see a lone deer looking increasingly uncomfortable as he continued to play with the sumptuous special of restaurant quality ddeokbokki set in front of him.

The expressive deer seemed stifled by the usually relaxed lunch time crowd, looking very much as if he was sitting down on painful pin-needles and spikes rather than the exceedingly comfortable cushions that could work out the worst of kinks in anyone’s muscles. Scrunching his eyebrows, he once again looked longingly at the empty dancers’ table that was usually abuzz with activity from the typically rowdy dance club kids. Sighing for the nth time, Lu Han felt suffocated by the normally peaceful atmosphere that the lunch hall could offer.

Maybe it was the knowing looks and hushed murmurs that were set in his direction that set his teeth on edge. Maybe it was the constant fussing of his two best friends that made him feel a tad bit overcrowded. Maybe it was his crumpled and unusually tight school uniform that caused the slightest feeling of light-headedness that made his head swim.

Or maybe it was the unexpected reaction and continued absence of a certain ice king that is the source of all of Lu Han’s present distress and growing anxieties.

The perplexed deer was still trying to wrap his pretty, pink head over what happened this morning. He still couldn’t fathom how coldly his precious Sehun had regard him earlier; giving him a mere fleeting look, the unfazed freshman walked past the frozen deer as if he was nothing more than a random student passing by. Never in Lu Han’s short life did he ever feel as invisible as he did in that moment.

If he thought that being unnoticed and unseen was more of a blessing than a burden, he definitely thought wrong.

He wanted so much for of Sehun to look at him; him and only him. He had this naïve fantasy of having the world stop on its axis during their first meeting; time gradually halting to a standstill as the two made eye contact. Lu Han gazing longingly at Sehun as if to say “finally, you’re here” and Sehun reciprocating with a shocked yet adoring look that spoke of his anticipation to finally meet his one true soul mate. It was the stuff that fairytales were made off, the kind you would tell your children and grandchildren whenever they would ask of how their grand love story began.

But sadly, as Lu Han was slowly realizing, fairytales did not exist. What existed though, were frigid, ice cold freshmen who would look at you as if you were an insignificant, uninteresting speck of dust floating aimlessly in the endless void that is his life.

I dyed my hair pink for you, you wipe!”

Despite Lu Han’s progressively troubled thoughts, he can’t help but feel a bit concerned for the dancer’s prolonged absence. It wasn’t normal for the freshman, or for any of the dancers for that matter, to miss lunch as the dance club always looked and seemed hungry. With the way they could mow down an entire buffet spread in less time it took Lu Han to finish one plate , you’d think they were being starved to death during dance practice.

Maybe they were, Lu Han wasn’t too sure; considering how thin most of them are he wouldn’t be at all surprised if there was underground diet ring that went on behind closed doors. SM High’s own version of the Hunger Games. Suddenly snapping up from his seat in attention, Lu Han’s concerns only grew as he thought of the possibility that his Sehun was in deed sick and involved in some twisted fasting cult.

What if they are sick?! What if the reason Sehun didn’t notice me was because he was rushing towards the nurse’s office?! Jongin seemed fine when I saw him. Huh! What if-

Lu Han’s thoughts were rudely interrupted when a Baekhyun’s dainty fingers started to harshly rub at the knot forming between Lu Han’s eyebrows.

“Yah, Lu Han! Stop with your unnecessary thinking and sit down! If you start worrying of all these useless things, you’ll become like old Modoc over here!” Baekhyun chided, taking it upon himself to be the over protective eomma after Lu Han’s little episode near the principal’s office.

Sitting down with a sheepish grin, Lu Han felt overwhelmingly guilty as he looked at his friends concerned faces. To say that the two were worried when Lu Han didn’t immediately written after their first class would be an understatement. Baekhyun nearly flipped out when the flaky deer finally made an appearance during third period history. Kyungsoo on the other hand, went into all out interrogation mode as he pried the information out of Lu Han.

Fully aware on how the two could be excessively over protective, Lu Han managed to keep the part of his and Sehun’s first meeting to himself as his friends would most likely not take this piece of information too kindly. He gave the excuse that the whole situation was just so stressful that he had a mild panic attack even before reaching the principal’s office. Luckily, Jongin was there to carry his sorry over to the nurse’s office immediately after his little feinting spell where he spent most of his time asleep.

The two’s concern only doubled after hearing that this news and have been coddling and fussing over the delicate deer, despite his continued protests that he is indeed fine. It wasn’t until Lu Han told them (more like threatened them) that the lack of personal space might cause another episode did the two lessen their need to fret over the fragile princess. Knowing his aversion to excessive amounts of attention, the two have managed to, surprisingly, mind themselves whilst keeping a keen eye on their frail little flower; Baekhyun went on to grumble under his breathe how he would totally get back at that unattractive bridge troll, Mrs. Kim.

His eyes once again traveled back towards the vacant table as his concerns now also involved the sun-kissed dancer who helped him earlier in the day. He couldn’t help the warm, pink tingling sensation he felt in his cheeks as he remembered how nice and secure Jongin’s arms felt wrapped around his small body; or how his sturdy chest sapped out all of the fears and anxieties that were crawling its way in Lu Han’s fragile psyche; or how warm his smile is when he lovingly looked down on Lu Han’s ugly snot cover-

“For the last time Lu Han, stop fretting over your missing prince and eat something!” It was Kyungsoo’s booming voice that had ceased Lu Han’s pensive thoughts. His cheeks now blooming a fuller red tint, embarrassed by the thought that he was starting to day dream about his good friend, Kim Jongin.

“Soo’s right, Lulu! You have barely touched your food! Now, Yoona-noona told you to go to her after lunch so that you could take some medicine!” Baekhyun gave Lu Han his all-out aegyo, persuading the frazzled deer to eat the hearty meal that the two had paid for on his behalf.

“Seriously guys, I’m fine! Look!” Lu Han said as he fed himself a spoonful of the piping hot ddeokbokki, almost choking himself as he wasn’t prepared for the spicy flavor that was now searing through his throat. Gulping down half a glass of water to calm down the coughing fit, he gave his two anxious friends his best reassuring smile.

“Besides, I don’t think that medicine would be necessary. I mean, I’m perfectly fi-“

“Well, look at you, my dear Lulu!”

Three pairs of curious eyes suddenly turned towards the perky intruder as Lee Taemin occupied the vacant seat next to the startled deer. Growing uncomfortable with Taemin’s excited and hungry look, Lu Han was further alarmed when, without warning, the energetic dancer suddenly reached out and brushed his hand through the princess’ pink locks.

“The news was right on the money this time! You look absolutely adorable Lulu! You’re like a cotton candy princess from Lotte Land!” Taemin said with a hearty chuckle, oblivious to the distress his seemingly harmless actions were causing the frightened deer. It was Kyungsoo who took notice of Lu Han’s startled expression as he gentle took hold of Taemin’s wrist and brought it down on the table.

“What are you doing here Taeminnie? Why aren’t you at your usual spot with the other dancing brats?”

“Well if you haven’t noticed Kyungie, there aren’t any “dancing brats” to hang out with!”

Piping up upon hearing the current status of the usually lively table, Lu Han took it upon himself to investigate the continued absence of his charming prince and unexpected savior.

“Speaking of which, where are they, Taemin-ah?” Lu Han tried his best at sounding casual and unaffected which sorely fell flat as his mounting curiosity over the location of his one-and-only Oh Sehun was palpable in the air surrounding their table.

“Well, Yixing-hyung is helping out Junmyeon-hyung with something. All of the second years are being punished after pulling a hilarious prank on Mr. Lee. And the hell if I know what happened to Kai and Sehun.” Suddenly realizing a conversation he “unwittingly” overheard, Taemin regarded the expectant deer with sly, knowing look. “Actually, dear Hannie, I would think you should know where the two went considering the juicy news that’s been going around the halls.”

Confused by the subtle prodding, Lu Han tried to rack his brain for any information that would indicate the current whereabouts of the two dancers. The last thing he remembered after falling asleep in Jongin’s arms was being carried all the way to the nurse’s office. After waking up, his bronzed skin knight was nowhere to be found with the nurse telling him that Jongin had already gone to his next class. Drawing up nothing, he could only give a dumbfound expression towards the gossip monger that is Lee Taemin.

“No, I don’t think I know where they are, should I?”

“Don’t play coy with me, Lulu. You, as well as the whole school, knows what happened during first period.”

“Yeah, I had to go to the nurse’s office. So what? How would that tell me where those two are?”

“Playing the ignorant damsel, I see. Well you don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to, you little minx you! But please indulge me, h-how is…” Taemin indicated Lu Han to come in closer as he leaned in to whisper something confidential to the oblivious little princess’ ear.

“How is that old horn dog Kai and our frigid maknae? Bet they were good, huh? I for one know that Jongin has a trick or two up his sleeve in the sack but I wouldn’t have guessed that Oh Sehun had game. So tell me, who’s the better lay?”

Lu Han gave Taemin a confounded look as he did not understand what the smirking freshman was going on about. It wasn’t until his words finally sunk in did Lu Han grasp the whole scandalizing picture that Taemin was explicitly describing. His face heating up from more than just the ddeokbokki, Lu Han started to flail as he attempted to dispel any misunderstandings or rumors that were unfortunately coursing through the school’s rumor mill.

“W-WHAT?! T-THERE’S NOTHING L-LIKE THAT GOING ON BETWEEN ME AND S-SEHUN OR ME A-AND JONGIN OR ME AND SEHUN AND JONGIN?! IT’S A COMPLETE LIE!”

Both Baekhyun and Kyungsoo, who were watching the two flower boys exchange with mild curiosity, now snapped in full attention as things were starting to get a lot more interesting in their boring old school.

“Aww.. You don’t have to be like that, Lulu! No need to be shy. In fact, if I took down playboy Kim Jongin and ice prince Oh Sehun, I would be proud and make the whole world know of my monumental achievements!”

 “YA-YAH! I’M TELLING YOU THAT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN! I M-MEAN YEAH I LIKE SEHUN AND I M-MIGHT LIKE JONGIN-I MEAN, AS A FRIEND! JUST AS A FRIEND! BUT WE DIDN’T OR HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT! NOT SAYING THAT I DON’T W-WANT T-TO! I MEAN-UH… I MEAN! GAH!”

Now, drawing the full attention of the lunch time crowd, Kyungsoo thought it would be best to intercede in this odd little exchange as Lu Han was assuredly fanning the flames of trivial high school gossip more with his suggestive screeching. Standing up from his perch, he gave the two flower boys in front of him his best no-none-sense glare which could shut up even the most immature and asinine punk there is, namely Kim Jongin.

“You, Princess Bubblegum, shut the up unless you want the whole school to think that you’re some scantily clad seductress during your free time after school!” Lu Han sullenly settled down in his chair as he could only bow his head in shame at Kyungsoo’s scolding who then diverted his wrath to the y freshman next to the mortified deer.

“And you, what’s this rumor going on that this unassuming, mousy Chinese dear has the gall to not only score with that insufferable Kim Jongin but also work the nerve to talk to that annoying little imp, let alone seduce him!” Taemin started to squirm in his seat as he didn’t know whether he should divulge the nitty gritty details of the latest hallway gossip, unable to predict the usually violent behavior of the infamous Satansoo.

Growing impatient, Kyungsoo slammed his palm on the table, startling not only the people at their table but all of the adjacent bystanders who were now watching the exchange with growing interest.

“SPEAK, LEE TAEMIN, OR I SWEAR TO GOD, I’LL-“

“ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! JEEZ! Would you take chill pill for a sec!”

Pleased that he was finally getting some answers, Kyungsoo sat back down in his chair as he crossed his arms across his chest and gave Taemin a stern and expectant look.

“Well if you must know, word on the street here, is that our little Lulu here cau-“

“LU-GE! ARE YOU ALRIGHT?! I HEARD YOU FEINTED AND-“

“OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOULD YOU PEOPLE PLEASE SHUT THE UP!” Kyungsoo unexpectedly bursts out, not pleased with the interruption their newest arrival had caused. Looking at the terrifying Satansoo, the new comer could only give the seething Kyungsoo a meek apology as his noticeable round cheeks turned a deep hue of scarlet.

“MINNIE!” Lu Han immediately launched himself from his position and tackled the unsuspecting baozi as he smothered him in bone crushing hug.

“Uh-I’m glad that you seem find Lu-ge, but… C-could you please let go? I-I can’t breathe!”

Releasing the panting second year, Lu Han gave Minseok an apologetic smile before launching into an excited and hurried discussion with his good pal.

“How you’ve been, Minnie? You look great! Have you been working out? I see that you’re biceps are more firm than the last time we saw each other! Tell me how you’ve been! Have you been working on those new moves we’ve been practicing? What’s going on with you nowa-“

“Whoa! Whoa, relax there Lulu. We only just saw each other last week! Nothing much has changed since then, but hey! Look at you! You’re the one who should be telling me things considering the last time I saw you, you still had brown hair! Nice one though, the color really suits, you!”

Bashfully smiling up at his football buddy and close friend, Lu Han’s cheeks glowed an attractive pink color as he felt shy under Minseok’s overtly fond gaze. A warm, brotherly moment was obviously being exchanged between the two football enthusiasts as they maintained an affectionate look between each other.

Now, normal people wouldn’t dare come in between the power duo that is LuMin. Being legends as both superb and invaluable football players on the field and the most adoring best friends to each other off the field, people could only fawn over the doting brotherly love the two had for each other. Their bond ran so deep that they even had special nicknames that only they could use with each other. In fact, it was Lu Han who started calling Minseok Xiumin since Minseok wanted a more Chinese sounding name to match with his Lu-ge.

Unfortunately for the duo, Kyungsoo wasn’t like normal people. Kyungsoo was impervious to such cavity inducing displays of affection; preferring hard, stone cold logic and reason to dictate the intricacies of his relationships. Kyungsoo is a man of answers and right now the two googly eyed idiots were preventing him from getting the much needed answers that he was looking for.

Clearing his throat, Kyungsoo gave the two a severe, unyielding glare as the two quickly stepped apart under Kyungsoo’s scrutiny. Kyungsoo was pleased to see the two keeping their distance and playing along with the wide-eyed boy’s mounting frustration. Turning his attention back to the intolerable freshman, he gestured for Taemin to continue with his explanation.

“As I was saying, people are saying that-“

“Well I’ll be~ you really do have pink hair.”

Casting his gaze upward, Kyungsoo started to talk to whatever deity there may be; asking for forgiveness for whatever offense he has committed in this and any past lives to have to suffer through with the continuous intrusion of their little conversation.

“Why?! Why me?! Why must people continue to bother me with their reprehensible stupidity?!”

“There, there Kyungie~ this is what you get for being a cold, unfeeling Decepticon!” Baekhyun comforted as he slowly rubbed soothing circles in Kyungsoo’s back, receiving a glare from the un-amused brunette. The mischievous puppy only gave a humorous chuckle in return as he turned his attention back towards the entertaining exchange that was currently unfolding.

 “Hey there, Minho!”

Choi Minho only gave the red haired pooch a nod in acknowledgment as he was now being mauled by an excessively excited Taemin. Enthusiastic to finally see his wonderful boyfriend again, Lee Taemin was now bouncing up and down like an energetic four year old making his way inside a candy store.

“MINHO-HYUNG! YOU’RE HERE! FINALLY! I’VE MISSED YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH~” Taemin sang as he smothered Minho’s face with small pecks, unfazed by the uncomfortable looks being directed towards the strange couple. Chuckling in response, Minho attempted to pry his childish boyfriend off himself lest the erted freshman started to do something that wouldn’t be appropriate in the middle of a crowded lunch hall.

“I missed you too, Taemin-ah~ but I need you to calm down for a bit since I need to talk to Lu Han over here. Will that be alright~” Minho pouted adorably at his wriggling boyfriend, knowing full well that Taemin could not deny Minho when he was doing his aegyo.

“Alright! But you have to promise me that you’ll drop by later and make it up to me~” Taemin finished with wink, causing Kyungsoo, who regrettably had to witness the whole interchange, to gag and scoff at the lewd couple. “Pfft! erts…”

“You know you’re jealous~ maybe you should ask that giant of your if he could drop by later and-“ Baekhyun’s mild teasing only earned him a slap on the head as he now had to nurse the sore spot that was beginning to throb due to an unapologetic Satansoo.

“Anyways~ Lu Han I need to talk to you about something.” Lu Han started to shrink under the heavy gaze of their team captain, knowing that the Choi Minho either talked to you if there was something very right or something very wrong.

He remembered a time when Choi Minho was once the object of his fickle heart’s dallying affection; going as far as joining the school’s football team during his freshman year to get the star player’s attention. At first it was hard; he had to study the sport which he knew absolutely nothing about and never having played a single sport in his life didn’t help one bit. In the end, he had to employ the help of one of his classmates who was well versed in the game seeing as both Baekhyun and Kyungsoo would die before playing a sport, just like himself back then.

After a lot of practice drills and game watching afterwards, Lu Han surprisingly got more interested in the game. It helped that his then coach was so enthusiastic about the sport that it naturally rubbed off on the impressionable young deer. He remembered spending all his free time practicing with his friend, who would later turn out to be one of his best buds and partner in crime on the field.

Yes, it’s because of Lu Han’s poor attempt at gaining the attention of the star striker back then that he inadvertently met and befriended Kim Minseok. It’s because of their tireless efforts and staggering amount of practice time that the now power duo were able to hone their skills and forge there brotherly bond. It was hard and grueling, and Lu Han had whined and complained along the way (much to Baekhyun and Kyungsoo’s amusement), threatening to even quit on more than one occasion, but it was Minseok’s perseverance, dedication and over all love for the sport that managed to get Lu Han through the day.

With time, Lu Han found that like singing, he enjoyed the sport so much that he couldn’t think of doing anything else, really. And it was all because of Minseok and his infectious enthusiasm. Luckily though, he didn’t hurl at any people of authority like the last time he did something half-hazard all because of some boy. He did however receive a nasty blow to the head as an errant ball smacked him at the back of the head; nothing serious though, a couple of days of bed rest and he was back on the field.

Yeah, like his poor attempt in middle school, everything worked out in the end as his love for Choi Minho turned into the love for the sport he represented and for the friend he gained in the process. Looking back on it now, Lu Han was glad that it didn’t really work out with Minho, seeing how sweet and how much he and Taemin are truly and madly in love. Besides, he knows how catty Taemin can really be, especially when it comes to his boyfriend, so yeah, everything got straightened out eventually.

Lu Han just prays to the heavens that like all the previous times he has done something this stupid, everything will work out like it always would. Finding himself back in the present, he met Minho’s steady gaze with his own, expecting anything and everything from their usually serious team captain. Knowing that their captain had nothing but love and concern for s, Lu Han was prepared to face anything that Choi Minho was going throw at him.

“Lu Han I just want to confirm from you if you’re currently involved with both Kim Jongin and Oh Sehun, and if this would affect your performance on the field.”

Whatever Lu Han was expecting from their all business team captain surely wasn’t this.

“Now I understand that men our age have needs; I mean if you’re involved with this little vixen over here, these urges become a necessity. And not that I want to pry into any of your personal business; but after hearing that you’ve been tangled in a sordid love triangle with the two which, if rumors are to be trusted, has escalated into a physical altercation, I must ask if your head is still in the game. As your team captain, I will always be here for you guys so if you find yourself in any trouble, feel free to approach me and talk to me if you need to.”

To say that everyone was shocked to not only hear this earth-shattering revelation but also to have it come from their normally stoic and exceedingly serious team captain would be to say that the world is seventy-five percent water. The only two people unaffected by this news were the very same couple who were currently holding unto each other nonchalantly as if they just delivered the morning weather report. It was Baekhyun first who managed to find his voice, who thought it appropriate to burst in a hysterical bout of uncontrollable laughter.

“T-THIS?! THIS PLAIN OLD, VANILLA FLAVORED, CHINESE DUMPLING INVOLVED IN SOME SCANDAL WITH TWO OF THE MOST NOTORIOUS BOYS IN OUR SCHOOL?! Y-YOU’RE PULLING MY LEG!” Baekhyun’s uninhibited show of obvious mirth finally snapped everyone out of their shock induced trance. Unfortunately for Lu Han though, that also meant that it opened the flood gates for more queries into his so called “affairs”.

“LU-GE! HOW COULD YOU?! I THOUGHT WE WERE BROTHERS?!”

“Minnie! We are brothers! These are just lies that-“

“HOLD ON A MINUTE! THIS CAN’T BE! LU HAN COULDN’T BE INVOLVED IN A SCANDAL LIKE THIS, COULD HE?! I MEAN WE WOULD KNOW! AND PHYSICAL ALTERCATION?! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!”

“That’s because I’m not! You know me Kyungsoo! And Jongin was fine this morning, there’s no-“

“OH MY GOD! THIS IS SO FUNNY! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! OUR LULU A PROWLING GOD! WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT?!”

“COULD YOU STOP THAT BAEKHYUN! I AM NOT SOME TWO TIMING FL-“

 “EVERYBODY SHUT UP!”

It was their senior’s commanding voice that managed to quell the annoying din of their raised questions. Minho looked at each one menacingly before turning his softening gaze on the growingly agitated deer.

“Now as I have said before, these are just rumors. I am not here to spread any false news or damaging gossip about anyone, especially anyone on my team. I am just here to confirm what I’ve heard from the source itself considering that such information, if true, would be a cause for alarm for any team captain or club head. So Lu Han, I will ask you once! Are these allegations true or shall I chalk it up to petty high school rumors?”

Looking into the steady yet soft resolve etched into the eyes of his sunbae, Lu Han managed to find his voice and defend himself from these extremely false accusations.

“Y-yes, Minho-hyung. I-I mean, I don’t have any romantic relationships with either Jongin or Sehun. Jongin is just a good friend who escorted me to the nurse’s office earlier today and Sehun…” Lu Han had to hold back the tears that threatened to fall, having to vocalize the fact that he didn’t want to admit to anyone, most especially to himself. Taking a deep breath, Lu Han steadies his resolve as he knows how the next few words would cut through his heart sharper than any razor.

“And Sehun… Sehun doesn’t even know I exist. I’m just a regular, old, random school mate of his and that is that.”

Hearing the hurt behind his words, Baekhyun and Kyungsoo wanted to rush towards their friend’s aide but were halted by Minho’s piercing, authoritative gaze. With a look of complete understanding, Minho regarded Lu Han with an affectionate and fatherly gaze that only a well respected and admired team captain could provide his troubled member.

“I totally understand Lu Han, and I get how stressful this situation must be for you so tell you what, I want you to go straight home after school today and rest your worries away. And I will NOT take no for an answer, you hear!” Minho added, noting the growing defiance in Lu Han’s eyes. Not wanting to disappoint his hyung and completely exhausted from the day’s events, going home right after school didn’t sound so bad when Lu Han thought about it. With a resigned sigh, Lu Han could only give a sheepish nod as he accepted the terms his captain laid out for him.

 “Alright, Minho-hyung.”

“Good! Seeing as I have already taken too much of your time, I will bid you fellas goodbye. Lu Han, I want you to have a good solid meal, alright? And then go to the nurse’s office afterwards cause sheesh! You look like you’re about to keel over at any minute. Now Taemin-ah, why don’t you sit with me for the remainder of lunch as…”

Lu Han started to tune out the couples lovey-dovey banter as he settled down to eat the now cold plate of ddeokbokki in front of him.

“I-I’ll see you later, Lu-ge. I hope you’ll feel better and don’t hesitate to tell me if anything or anyone is giving you trouble!” Minseok enthusiastically said, giving a fighting sign towards the dejected deer who could only give him a small smile in return.

As the round-cheeked baozi made his own exit, Baekhyun and Kyungsoo could only look at their friend with growing concern as they don’t really know how to handle the unusually sad princess. Lu Han once again turned thoughtful, as he reflected how bad things have gotten in such a short amount of time. From the pure and innocent Angel of SM to a two-timing harlot Lu Han thought that things couldn’t get any worse than this.

But it’s usually around times like these that things got better, didn’t it?

With a small glimmer of hope flourishing within Lu Han’s heart, he couldn’t help but smile at the thought that it was during the times that he felt so low that things would turn out for the better.

After much the vehement insistence of his two friends and remembering the stern tone of his sunbae, Lu Han made his way to the nurse’s office after polishing off the remainder of his lunch. Although still a little sad, Lu Han managed to have skip in his step, oddly looking forward to how his latest misadventure would play out before him. He was pretty confident that his latest love-induced act of idiocy would find him in a better place than where he was before; he just couldn’t wrap his mind around how this one would turn out exactly.

Rounding the last corner, Lu Han heard faint chatter coming from the normally quiet office of their Yoona-noona. Lu Han could identify the soft yet strict voice of their school’s exceptionally pretty nurse but couldn’t place the other voice that was obviously in a childish argument with the disciplined medical practitioner. The voice was familiar but he couldn’t exactly place from whom he heard it before. Maybe it’s because the voice is slightly warped due to the whining tone being applied by the owner; most probably complaining or even shamelessly flirting with the no none sense adult.

Growing increasingly curious, Lu Han thought to hell with it as he carelessly threw the door open, confident that he shouldn’t be interrupting something since he too had business with their nurse.

“But noona~ you know I can’t miss a day of dance practice!”

“Shut it, Jongin! You’re lucky I’m keeping quiet about your little ‘accident’. Now if you keep on insisting to still go to your dance club after school, then I would have to report your injury to the proper authorities.”

 “But noona~”

Lu Han could only gape at what he was seeing in front of him; Kim Jongin sitting down on one of the clinic beds as their nurse, Im Yoona, applied what looked like ointment on a nasty looking cut on Jongin’s chiseled cheek. It wasn’t the injury the caught Lu Han’s attention but the cute little pout Jongin was giving their austere nurse. The surprised deer never thought in a million years that the infamous bad boy that is Kim Kai is also capable of such an adorable aegyo.

Well, I’ll be damned. How many sides are there to you, Kim Jongin?

Noticing the addition of a new pair of eyes, Jongin regarded their intruder with cool, steely gaze, softening up once he registered that it was only Lu Han at the door.

“Lulu! Come here and sit with me! Maybe you could convince Yoona-noona to let me stay after school!” Lu Han mechanically approached the now bounding Kim Jongin as he patted the space next to him. Seeing the new comer, Yoona stopped applying ointment on Jongin’s cheek long enough to address Lu Han with her dazzling, mega-watt smile.

“Why hello, Lu Han! I’m glad you decided to go here after all! I had the feeling that I would have to hunt you down and drag you back here to shove the medicine down your throat but since you’re already here, that won’t be necessary!” Im Yoona said with the most gracious smile and chipper of tones. It was a talent that their nurse could both threaten and make a student feel so taken cared off all within the same breath. Im Yoona wasn’t known for being the most effective and accommodating nurse in their district for nothing.

Between the child-like Jongin at his side and the veiled threat there nurse gave him, Lu Han only gave a small nod at both of them, not really knowing which one he should give it to. The lost deer really didn’t know how to handle this situation, more specifically an aegyo spurting, childlike Kim Jongin who now continued his earlier whining to their stalwart nurse. Looking at Kim Jongin know, when he is so unguarded and just downright cute, Lu Han couldn’t help but admire the male that only a few days ago he regarded with a small amount of apprehension.

How his sun-kissed skin made him look every bit like the god he made himself out to be. How his tight uniform perfectly outlined what a stellar dancer’s body he must have underneath all that layers of clothing. How his strong jaw line made him look exceedingly rugged and undoubtedly manly. How his perfectly chiseled facial features made him look like some high end runway model, ready to jet set his way on any catwalk around the world.

But it wasn’t only the attributes that made Jongin the walking symbol people liked to fantasize him to be (even going as far as giving him the title of the wolf between the sheets) that Lu Han noticed; it was also the soft gentle features that Jongin had when he allowed himself to be this open and vulnerable to other people. The same features he saw when the usually devilish hell hound turned out to be his would be angelic savior.

Lu Han admired how his plushy full lips could look so beautiful when he was giving out a genuine smile and not one of his annoying smirks. He took note of the warm, squinty eyes that disappeared when he burst out into a full hearty laugh, preferring these over the mocking pair he has come accustomed to. He gazed at his fluffy, sandy-brown hair that caught the light in such a way as to make it appear as if the man had a halo of light following him around. The awestruck dear finally stopped his inspection when he saw the high chiseled cheekbones that promised nothing more than mischief and excitement.

Seeing the painful looking cut and the bruising skin underneath, Lu Han couldn’t help but reach out and lightly touched the marred flesh, worried when he saw Jongin slightly flinch at his gentle touch.

“What happened?” Lu Han asked with unbridled concern as he looked into Jongin soft chocolate eyes, losing himself in their depth. With warm smile fresh on his lips, Jongin reached up to grab a hold of Lu Han’s curious hand and hold it for what should just be an intimate gesture among friends.

 “I fell down some stairs.”

Not really believing Jongin’s lame excuse, knowing full well that the graceful and dexterous dancer wouldn’t be done in by some flimsy steps, Lu Han only gave a sheepish nod as he didn’t want to break the spell that has currently wound itself around the two.

 And then it clicked…

The moment when time would stop, the moment when you were gazing into the eyes of the one you love and recognizing the love shared in return. Lu Han’s heart started to beat more rapidly while his palms began to sweat; not that it was uncomfortable, it was just different, relaxing even. As Lu Han got lost in Jongin’s sweet liquid chocolate gaze, he didn’t notice the current audience who was seeing more than she should.

Clearing to get their attention, Yoona coolly gave Lu Han the anti-stress pills that he should take to calm his nerves for the rest of the day as the bashful deer suddenly turned away from the intimate moment with his friend. With a soft pink dusting his plush cheeks, Lu Han bowed his head in embarrassment at the absurd thought that he was actually falling in love with the bad news that is Kim Jongin.

Get a grip on yourself Lu Han! You love Sehun! Oh Sehun! You’re just having an off day, that’s all!

Observing the romantic exchange between the two, Im Yoona had a mischievous thought as she may have found a way to ensure that both Lu Han and Kim Jongin would adhere to her professional medical advice.

“Well Lu Han, I expect that you had a full lunch since you bravely made your way here, alone. Otherwise I would have to take some slightly drastic measures, but anyways. Since both of you are NOT in any condition to be going around and exerting yourself all needlessly; maybe you should our little Lulu here home, Jongin. AFTER CLASS…” Yoona said the last two words with so much finality that pretty much meant that any arguments would broker harsh consequences to the offender.

Foolishly, Lu Han was about to do just that when a soft squeeze on his hand stopped him from making any protests. Peering up at Jongin’s warm and authentic expression, any objections got caught in Lu Han’s throat as he felt his heart speeding up, wanting very much to burst through his chest.

“Okay.” Jongin’s soft reply only fuelled the flames in Lu Han’s heart as he’s now conflicted with the man he has always wanted and the man who is now looking at him with so much love and sincerity it was ridiculous.

Understanding the finality of the agreement, Lu Han gulped down the pills dry as he looked forward to his and Jongin’s inevitable rendezvous later with both apprehension and excitement. If Lu Han thought that his wish of things getting better was unheard, then he deeply regrets opening his big mouth now because he didn’t know whether things were about to get better or a whole lot worse.

 Ugh! me!

“Umm.. Thanks again Mr. Wolf for saving me while ago.”

It was quite weird how things turned out in the end. Lu Han hadn’t expect that this unforgiving predator would turn out to be his angel in disguise, and now, his unexpected travel companion as he looked for his friends. If it wasn’t for the wolf’s quick thinking, the grass snake that managed to wrap itself around Lu Han’s body would have bitten him. Lu Han would have been dead in a matter of minutes if it wasn’t for the wolf that lunged just in time to pounce at the snake before any harm was done.

Lu Han now had a new found appreciation of the saying “never judge a book by its cover”.

Feeling a bit safer with the intimidating mass of fur and muscle by his side, Lu Han felt better at the prospects his new adventure had in store. Still, Lu Han felt a bit uncomfortable not knowing the name of his unexpected savior as he himself rushed through his own name during the awkward exchange that followed his sudden rescue.

“If you weren’t able to catch my name earlier Mr. Wolf, my name is Lu Han!”

Giving out his hand for the traditional handshake, Lu Han was expecting some form of reply from the sandy-brown wolf but instead he got a piercing stare in return. The wolf continued to gaze at Lu Han as if searching something within his eyes, making the flustered deer a bit uncomfortable. Believing he might have offended the wolf with his expectedly human custom, he retracted his hand and awkwardly tried again.

“Uh… What’s your name Mr. Wolf?”

Again Lu Han is met with silence and again he felt the awkward air settling down around them. Saving himself from any further embarrassment, Lu Han started to turn away and walk again when his laconic companion finally piped up next to him.

 “My name is Kai.”

Cheerily turning back towards his new friend, Lu Han gave a full teethed smile as he could finally address the wolf that saved him from certain death.

“Well it’s nice to meet you Kai! I hope that you take good care of me!” Lu Han excitedly said with a small bow in return.

As both the deer and wolf returned to the path in front of them, Lu Han couldn’t help the new added skip in his step as he looked forward to the journey before him. With the wolf at his side, Lu Han knew that things would only get better from here on in!
