Part Five: Change of the Tide
On Shifting SandEunji jolted awake, her eyes adjusting to the darkness from where she slept facedown, her chest pressed to Taekwoon's, her head having been nestled against his shoulder, and his arm wrapped loosely around her in his slumber. She looked down into his sleeping face and resisted the urge to kiss him until he woke, especially since they still had yet to call this arrangement between them anything more than that.
Pulling back slowly and carefully, she eased out from under his arm and turned to search for her shirt when she saw him. A shadowed form stood in the darkness of the underground warehouse less than five feet away, and she gave a muffled cry of surprise as she snatched up the closest piece of clothing to cover herself with.
"Who's there?" she hissed, irritation making her tone sharp. Honestly she should have known who it was - everyone else knew to keep to their own business and leave everyone else to theirs.
A momentarily glint of silver showed in the darkness, then the answer, "Ken."
Eunji rolled her eyes and let the article of clothing drop, not having any need for privacy from a machine. Her searching hands found her own clothing and she stood to quietly dress. Despite her own reasoning that he was just a machine, though, she felt uncomfortable with him watching her dress, so after a moment she shot him a glare and said, "Do you mind?"
His shadowed form only tipped the head to one side, making no other movement. "Mind? I... do not understand this pattern of speech..."
"Oh my god," she mumbled, motioning sharply with her hand. "Turn the around, would you? Let me dress in private."
His confusion was palpable in the air between them, but he did as she ordered, turning his back to face away. When she was fully dressed, she looked down at Taekwoon to find him thankfully still asleep, then stood from pulling her boots on and passed Ken. "Follow," she said, and he obeyed.
Once out of earshot and in what she deemed relative privacy, she turned to him and crossed her arms over her chest. "What was that all about? Standing there watching us sleep. How long were you there?"
She could see his eyes, and those only becasue they gave off a soft blue glow in the dark of night. Those deceptively human orbs didn't waver as he looked at her, but from the slight change in their shape sh could guess that his brow crinkled. In confusion, given his tone as he said, "You are my operator, I was standing by for instructions. Was I not supposed to be?"
She heaved a sigh and ran a hand through her messy dark locks, her irritation melting away. He was a tool, he couldn't know better. "I left you with Commander Yunho. Why didn't he give you a place to stay for the night?"
"He told me thank you and to go 'get some rest'. I assumed that was a dismissal and so I went to find you. You are my operator. You were otherwise indisposed when I found you so I simply waited for instructions. Was that wrong?"
Oh god. That meant he had seen more than just them sleeping? A flush rose over her cheeks, not only from embarrassment but also furstration. Had she known he would be this much of a pain then she wouldn't have picked him up! "Yes, Ken! Yes, that was wrong." she snapped. "If you're dismissed and told to go get rest, you go to a clear area, lay down, and sleep. Is it that hard to understand?"
He didn't deserve her anger, surely, but he didn't show any outward sign of upset. "I am sorry, I understand now. So I lay down like a human and shut down?"
"Yes." Dammit. "Come on, I'll find you a spot. Mimic what humans look like in their sleep." When she left him, tucked in a corner away from anyone else, he was laying in a rigid line with his eyes tightly shut. Oh well, it would work.
She returned to her own bedroll, knowing that she would owe Taekwoon an explanation in the morning as to why she hadn't stayed. Then again, she wasn't his girlfriend, she didn't owe him anything. Right?
Too bad no one told him that. Morning came and he was sullen and quiet, and whe
