Part Three: Current Operator

Eunji's hand fell to her pocket, her fingers finding the smooth surface of the cube tucked away there. It was still about the size of an apple, the square edges making it a bit uncomfortable pressed into her leg, despite the roomy size of her cargo pants. How could it have been the hands that lifted her? She remembered how it had been a liquid at first, tranforming into the small square when she touched it, but to change complete shape and size to become something much bigger than an apple - that was inconceivable.

"Um," she ventured, unsure how to converse with an object sitting in her pocket, but luckily it seemed to recognize her intent.

"What do you need?" The same voice, still androgynous and slightly metallic sounding, and this time she could tell that it was coming from her pocket. Such a strange sensation and she couldn't help the shiver that passed down her spine. She was here, sitting in the dark elevator shaft, speaking to a piece of alien technology that could bring them down on her at any moment.

She needed to know. "So, you said I'm your current operator. Does that mean that you won't give me away to the crawlers?"

There was a short pause, the silence making her nervous, before the cube finally answered. "Is that was you call the Asryekrngndjkse? Crawlers? No, I will not do anything without my current operator's direction: I am a tool, after all."

"Um, I didn't direct you to lift me into here..." she said slowly, thinking that she had caught a loophole in the logic, but the cube answered immediately.

"I also do what you require, and at that moment your requirement was a lift. You said so yourself and so I formed a shape to be able to help you toward what you required."

Eunji sat and let that sink in. So it was a tool, this... thing... but it could also form thought on its own to be able to anticipate her needs. But was that what she actually needed, or would it be what it assumed she needed? "In future, do not act upon any guessing or requirements of mine unless I specifically ask you to, understood?"

She expected argument or questioning, but to her surprise the voice merely answered, "Understood."

"Good," she responded after a moment, then shifted. "Can you slip out and see if the coast is clear, without being discovered?"

A short pause once again, then the answer yes, if that was what she wanted. She said it was, and just like that, she felt the cube shift out of her pocket. It was an odd sensation, feeling the thing go soft and malleable and leave its confines on its own, without anyone touching it. She suppressed a shiver and simply waited in the darkness, hoping that it would do as she asked.

"Wait. How did I become your operator? Is it whoever touches you that controls you?" If so, then any alien could simply grab it and she would be given away.

"No," came the answer almost immediately, and she felt relief run through her that the cube hadn't yet left before she had thought to ask that. "Operational commant ends with the death of the operator. Since my last operator was killed - the pilot of the ship you shot down - I would have simply waited within the interface to be assigned to my next operator. Your interference meant that I was biologically assigned to you instead, and so, now I am your tool."

A slight smile came over her face and she nodded. "Very good to know," she said, and it was. She was now, until her death, the operator of what seemed to be an advantage, maybe in this war if she could know what questions to ask of it. "Check quickly and come back to me."

She sat in the dark for probably almost five minutes, trying her best to not think about Wonshik and Bomi and instead focus on what to ask of her new asset. She would have to know if it could connect to other cubes and get troop movements and orders; if so, that would be a huge benefit to the ERF. Instead of reacting to the crawlers, they could finally have some intel and maybe be able to be proactive. If used right, this cube could be the f

Chapter 9: That ending was really great, and the way Eunji and Ken worked together to achieve this victory was wonderful. He really was a cool machine and very helpful in everything, and her sacrifice was well worth it. Thank you for writing this story. It was very enjoyable to read♡.

Chapter 7: Oh, man. The realization of love was sweet, and the times they had together were wonderful. It's too bad she hadn't been able to tell Taekwoon how she really felt. This was a really sad chapter!

Chapter 4: I had to be hard for her to break the news of Bomi's death to Hongbin, and I feel bad for him. It once again brings back the reminder that this is a war, and that comes with losing loved ones. It must be difficult to not become complacent, and I love how you're bringing that out here.
The scene with Taekwoon was sweet and it helps them both to cope with this and find comfort in one another. It was nice;). And I like that you didn't add , since it would have taken away from the story, in this case.

Chapter 3: This story is turning out really nicely! I love that the cube is an entity of its own, and it...he...cracks me up with his mannerisms and cluelessness. The ears made me laugh, too!
I feel bad for Eunji, though. It has to be hard to live in this new existence of fear and uncertainty. I hope it won't be too much to handle. At least she has Ken now!

Chapter 9: Oooh, if you ask me to be honest I will tell you that this story had me shooketh. I love how you wrote with realism. Oh my god why is realism so rare in scifi fics. But either way, I loved this. Everything, from the opening deaths to how you described the actions of Eunji and the other characters, was just spot on. I must say that the best part was the end; when Eunji sacrificed her life, and then the epilogue of course. Humans are tenacious individuals indeed.

Chapter 9: Honestly, I would say this was more of a bittersweet story. Of course it had sad elements and the sweet moments were hardly enough to counterbalance those, but the overarching message and the ending theme... those were very positive things. I'm a bit perturbed we never discovered who the informant was *grumble grumble* but I suppose it doesn't matter in the end. Not with the way that everything ended.

I definitely felt for Eunji and Taekwoon, but especially for Ken, ironically enough. Though just a tool, he came off as more of a child to me, learning and growing and eventually beginning to understand what would ultimately happen. Teaching him to be human was both a kindness and a curse. Poor thing. But, as sad as the ending was, more or less, I found it highly satisfying. It showcases the very best of humans right after the very worst in them. And the epilogue grants hope - ignorant of the true victory they had - but there is a future because of one person and her tool.

Excellent entry for the contest and congratulations on winning! It was a good read and not half as heart-rending as I was potentially expecting. haha Well done and also congrats for tackling new elements (sci-fi and female protagonist) with such success. :D

Chapter 2: Well. I certainly didn't expect that opener and you were correct in explaining that it wasn't going to be happy, but I am strangely delighted with this chapter though. Her... partner(?) is quite entertaining, and I know it's not trying to be, but the situation is just amusing. Minus the enemies and being trapped and now alone and all that. I also chuckled at her ERFian comment. You do well with adding bits of levity into more serious situations and it works wonders. Nicely done! Now on to more! :D

Chapter 9: This story had me kicking in the air for no absolute reason lol this is pure awesomeness. No one will be able to predict the end of this story if they don't read the entire series. Surely this story went to a direction I've never expected before but who cares about my preference it's still Sooooo Great™, I swear, definitely one of my favs! Anyways thank you so much for writing this story, you really did a great job on creating such an emotional roller-coaster within the action-war-scifi theme, I really appreciate it!! ♥
