Part One: Like Grains of Sand

Darkness stretched across the abandoned street, making it hard for human eyes to make out exactly what was out there. Eunji shifted her feet ever so slowly, trying to take weight off of her tired legs without giving away her position. Her nose itched but she didn't want to let go of her rifle to scratch it, so she had to resort to wiggling it around to try and relieve the itch. At least there was no one to see her predicament. The nearest ERF soldier, her squad leader Wonshik, was around the corner from her, watching her back as she was watching his.

The ERF was a small organization, if it could even be called such. A handful of people who had gotten together to try and fight back, was more like it. And they had a ridiculous abbreviated name, something that Eunji refused to call herself.  Why couldn't they say 'rebels', or 'freedom fighters', or even 'bug killers'? But no, they were the Earth Rebel Faction, ERF for short. What was she supposed to tell someone, 'hi, I'm an ERFian?'

"Stupid name," she grumbled under her breath, the words making nearly no noise, the puff of air in the crisp, cool night air the only true indication she had spoken. Even in her irritation she was careful; their enemy had incredibly advanced hearing, either from their own genetic makeup or from their technology. Earth's remaining scientists had admitted that the alien tech was far beyond human capabilities; despite their insect-like appearances, they were so far elevated above human technologically that Earth's natives were like cockroaches to them. Forget that the damn creatures actually mimicked the disgusting bugs in their own appearances, at least when they were in marching formation. They could stand upright and fire their weapons, towering over human height when they did, but their six legs and carapace bodies could only resemble bugs.

The soft hum of an approaching engine caught Eunji's attention, and her gaze darted up to search the darkened night sky. That sounded like one of the scouting vessels that the invaders used; then again, it could be nothing else since they had destroyed Earth's own tech. Cars refused to start, computers wouldn't work... nothing. Thankfully the weapon she held did not rely on any sort of technology to work - it was an older AK-47 with a wooden ba

Chapter 9: That ending was really great, and the way Eunji and Ken worked together to achieve this victory was wonderful. He really was a cool machine and very helpful in everything, and her sacrifice was well worth it. Thank you for writing this story. It was very enjoyable to read♡.

Chapter 7: Oh, man. The realization of love was sweet, and the times they had together were wonderful. It's too bad she hadn't been able to tell Taekwoon how she really felt. This was a really sad chapter!

Chapter 4: I had to be hard for her to break the news of Bomi's death to Hongbin, and I feel bad for him. It once again brings back the reminder that this is a war, and that comes with losing loved ones. It must be difficult to not become complacent, and I love how you're bringing that out here.
The scene with Taekwoon was sweet and it helps them both to cope with this and find comfort in one another. It was nice;). And I like that you didn't add , since it would have taken away from the story, in this case.

Chapter 3: This story is turning out really nicely! I love that the cube is an entity of its own, and it...he...cracks me up with his mannerisms and cluelessness. The ears made me laugh, too!
I feel bad for Eunji, though. It has to be hard to live in this new existence of fear and uncertainty. I hope it won't be too much to handle. At least she has Ken now!

Chapter 9: Oooh, if you ask me to be honest I will tell you that this story had me shooketh. I love how you wrote with realism. Oh my god why is realism so rare in scifi fics. But either way, I loved this. Everything, from the opening deaths to how you described the actions of Eunji and the other characters, was just spot on. I must say that the best part was the end; when Eunji sacrificed her life, and then the epilogue of course. Humans are tenacious individuals indeed.

Chapter 9: Honestly, I would say this was more of a bittersweet story. Of course it had sad elements and the sweet moments were hardly enough to counterbalance those, but the overarching message and the ending theme... those were very positive things. I'm a bit perturbed we never discovered who the informant was *grumble grumble* but I suppose it doesn't matter in the end. Not with the way that everything ended.

I definitely felt for Eunji and Taekwoon, but especially for Ken, ironically enough. Though just a tool, he came off as more of a child to me, learning and growing and eventually beginning to understand what would ultimately happen. Teaching him to be human was both a kindness and a curse. Poor thing. But, as sad as the ending was, more or less, I found it highly satisfying. It showcases the very best of humans right after the very worst in them. And the epilogue grants hope - ignorant of the true victory they had - but there is a future because of one person and her tool.

Excellent entry for the contest and congratulations on winning! It was a good read and not half as heart-rending as I was potentially expecting. haha Well done and also congrats for tackling new elements (sci-fi and female protagonist) with such success. :D

Chapter 2: Well. I certainly didn't expect that opener and you were correct in explaining that it wasn't going to be happy, but I am strangely delighted with this chapter though. Her... partner(?) is quite entertaining, and I know it's not trying to be, but the situation is just amusing. Minus the enemies and being trapped and now alone and all that. I also chuckled at her ERFian comment. You do well with adding bits of levity into more serious situations and it works wonders. Nicely done! Now on to more! :D

Chapter 9: This story had me kicking in the air for no absolute reason lol this is pure awesomeness. No one will be able to predict the end of this story if they don't read the entire series. Surely this story went to a direction I've never expected before but who cares about my preference it's still Sooooo Great™, I swear, definitely one of my favs! Anyways thank you so much for writing this story, you really did a great job on creating such an emotional roller-coaster within the action-war-scifi theme, I really appreciate it!! ♥
