Twenty Five

Soyabean

Eight years of age, the old man muses, as he looks at some old photos of his childhood he had found in the attic. They were mostly faded and creased at the edges, some with the colour almost fast gone. There was one where he was three and on a tricycle, another one when he was six and eating an ice cream, and then one more as he played soccer as a teen. There weren't many photos, because his father never had the money to buy a camera or develop the film. These must have been gifts from a kind neighbour.

It seems like such a long time ago, he thinks, and then sighs as he keeps the photos back in their album and troops out of the door, wincing slightly in the sharp glare of the sun. He pulls his cap lower, over his eyes, and then makes his way to Cheonggyecheon River.

She is already there, which is surprising. She has come from work, her hair tied up in a bun and her pencil skirt smoothen out neatly on the ground. She turns as she hears his footsteps, and manages a smile, albeit a small one.

She looks sad, he thinks, but smiles back and sits next to her, groaning slightly as his joints creak.

"Are you okay?" she asks, and he waves her question away with one hand, the veins protruding from under his skin.

They sip their soyabean in silence, and a tourist comes up and asks if Seungyeon can help him take a picture. Seungyeon smiles and says yes, of course, standing and taking the camera from the tourist's hands. The old man knows that this is not about a photo.

Sure enough, the old man hears the tourist ask if Seungyeon would like to have a drink with him later on, to which Seungyeon smiles and flashes her wedding ring in front of him. Clearly disappointed and embarrassed, the tourist hurriedly murmurs a oh, sorry, before scampering off, camera and all.

Seungyeon chuckles a little as she sits back down, and even the old man has to smile. He has never met Seungyeon's husband before, but knows he is a good man because he makes Seungyeon happy and she loves him very much. He is glad his friend had managed to find a companion in her life, something he regretted not pursuing. He is far too old now, though.

"Ahjusshi," Seungyeon suddenly says, her tone serious.

He looks at her questioningly.

"I have to tell you something," she says, her bottom lip trembling slightly.

He raises his eyebrows.

"I'm leaving."

Both eyebrows are raised now, and his mouth is opened slightly.

"My husband, he's a pilot, and he's been posted to London, so I have to follow him there. He'll be there for quite awhile, and he's even thinking of settling down there," she whispers, her voice getting softer and softer with every word.

The old man cannot believe what he is hearing. He can only stare at her, cheekbones showing through his parched skin.

"I'm leaving tomorrow," she whispers, barely audible now. "I didn't know how to tell you before, I'm sorry."

The old man feels like he might just have a heart attack. His friend, his only friend, will be leaving him. His friend, who has never failed to miss a single soyabean meeting with him, will now be gone. He will have nothing to look forward to now, no laughter, no recounts about her day, nothing.

Nothing.

London. So far away.

"I'm sorry," she whispers again, putting the cup down as the sobs start to surface.

But soon Seungyeon feels a nudge at her arm. She looks up and the old man pushes her cup of soyabean towards her, willing her to drink it, to cherish their last moment together.

Seungyeon smiles through her tears, wiping her eyes dry.

Picking up the cup and sipping through the straw, she asks him, "Is it good?"

He wants to tell her the truth, he really does, but he can only nod his head, unable to tell her, it is very good.

Chapter 7: I don't know what I expected from this... maybe that at 25, the ahjusshi would eventually pass away, but I guess that's because all the stories I read and write are angst driven. This was refreshing and a surprisingly sweet read. I love soyabean ^^
