Twenty

Soyabean

He smiles as he sees her faint silouhette in the rosy glow of the sun, and he raises a hand tentatively in the air. Immediately, she waves back, and his smile grows wider. So many years, and yet she has never missed a single afternoon of soyabean with him. At twenty, she is still the best friend he has ever had, and he reckons her grandparents must be very proud of her, just like how he is.

"College life is tough," she says, sighing as she sits next to the old man and gives him his cup of soyabean.

"Thanks goodness I have this break," she continues, raising her cup and smiling at him before going on to exclaim about how the soyabean hasn't lost its taste even after so many years.

He has to agree. In fact, he is surprised the stall has stood for this long, but he supposes it must be one of those family stalls which stand around for years. He sips the drink and smiles as she chirps on and on about college life; how she thinks the boy two rows down the lecture hall may like me, or how that old professor is worse than a crowing rooster!

She hasn't changed much, he thought to himself, and neither have I.

Somehow he likes things better this way, how he can still be shrouded in this comfortable silence, how the landscape of the river never changes, how the soyabean still tastes silky and warm in his mouth, how his coat and tweed cap fit him like a paintbrush would in an artist's hand.

It is this simplicity, he realises, that allows him to wake up everyday without feeling like a disaster, as many old people have been known to feel as they get on in their years and have little or nothing to look forward to at all.

He has soyabean, and he has Seungyeon.

Little does he know that Seungyeon is thinking the same thoughts, how, despite the stress of college and her now snappy parents, she still has this pocket of bliss to look forward to each day. There is still this silver lining where she can put down all her troubles and for once feel like the birds in the sky, free to roam wherever they please.

She smiles fondly at the old man, then asks, "Is it good?"

He nods, as his usual reply, and once again he is thinking to himself, it is very good.

Chapter 7: I don't know what I expected from this... maybe that at 25, the ahjusshi would eventually pass away, but I guess that's because all the stories I read and write are angst driven. This was refreshing and a surprisingly sweet read. I love soyabean ^^
