Fifteen

Soyabean

"Seungyeon, coming?" Nicole, her friend, asks. Hara, Jiyoung and Gyuri look at her expectantly. They have planned to go out with each other and catch a movie together, the latest in town, about a the love between an orphaned young boy and a well to do maiden. Seungyeon shuffles on the spot, not too sure how to break this to her friends.

"I ... I can't," she finally says sheepishly, and Nicole puts her hands on her hips.

"I'm sorry guys! Next time, okay?" she says, throwing a bubbly smile at them, and then rushing off quickly, because she is already late for her friend. Sauntering up to the soyabean shop, she hurriedly slaps down the money and yells her thanks, taking her drinks with her. Years of experience has taught the shopkeeper ahjumma to always prepare two cups of soyabean for Seungyeon.

Seungyeon reaches the river soon, and she smiles at the sight of the frail old man sitting by the river's side. The fifteen year old calls to him, and then delights in seeing his eyes light up as he sees her. She hands out his cup of soyabean, and once again they drink the drink in comfortable silence, sitting beside each other and taking in the marvellous view of the river.

Her parents were still as busy as ever even after so many years, but she counts herself lucky to have found a group of firm friends in high school. They were a lovely bunch, but nothing could ever compare to her ahjusshi who had been her friend since the tender age of five.

She sometimes wondered what passer-bys thought of them, an old man and a young teenage girl sharing cups of soyabean. She liked to think of him as her grandfather, but her own grandfather was a stern man who seemed far too similar to a marble statue. Her ahujusshi was so much different, so she supposed her couldn't really be her grandfather.

He was as good as, though.

As the sky soon turned a rosy red and the birds flew above them back to their nests, Seungyeon and the ahjusshi set their empty cups down on the hard gravel.

"Is it good?" Seungyeon asks.

He nodded, but little did she know he was thinking to himself, it is very good.

Chapter 7: I don't know what I expected from this... maybe that at 25, the ahjusshi would eventually pass away, but I guess that's because all the stories I read and write are angst driven. This was refreshing and a surprisingly sweet read. I love soyabean ^^
