Ten
SoyabeanThe old man stands in front of his mirror and examines himself. Five years have passed and he is thinner than ever. Most of his hair is turning white, and he reaches one hand up to massage his scalp. Sighing, he pulls on his coat and places his tweed cap over his head before stepping out of his dingy apartment.
Cheonggyecheon River is still as popular as ever, the old man thinks, as he settles down by the riverside and looks at the people coming and going. He is having a good time, when a familiar voice calls, " Ahjusshi!"
He turns and offers the girl coming down the pavement a smile. She is the same girl from five years ago, when his hair was still grey and he weighed heavier. She is not so little anymore, but is still a child. At aged ten, she has rosy cheeks and sparkling eyes, and is, to the old man, the prettiest child he has ever seen.
She hands him his cup of soyabean, and they sit and look at the people together, enjoying their drink. There is a bunch of young boys opposite the river, laughing loudly and trying to push each other into the water. They remind the old man of his childhood, happier times when he had lots of buddies and they would do crazy things with each other too.
"Boys," the girl sniffs, and the old man realises she had been watching them too. He looks at her questioningly, and by way of explanation, she says, "Boys are from Mars."
The old man smiles softly to himself, amused by the girl's choice of words. Soon, he thinks, your impression of them will change. They continue watching the group of boys play, the girl making remarks about their unruly behaviour and awful dressing. The old man has to try hard to suppress his laughter; he wishes he was as young as her again, innocent and thinking that girls are from Venus. It had been a long time since he has felt this happy.
I hope she treasures her youth, the old man thinks, looking over at her.
"Alien creatures," the girl says disdainfully, and the old man has a sudden urge to chuckle again.
The girl looks at him and asks, "What's so funny?"
The old man fights hard to keep a straight face as he shakes his head, even though the girl presses him to speak his mind.
"Oh well then," she sighs, and then asks, "Is the soyabean good?"
He nods, and thinks, it is very good.
