The Chois

Meet the Chois

Tuesday, August 11,2015, this marked the first day of Choi Sunmi's year as a high school senior. She planned to go through this year with ease and with hopes of no hellish, annoying obstacles to obscure her from doing so. Peace was the only thing she prayed for during her last, fleeting days of summer vacation.

She entered her class, finding that all the seats had been arranged with namecards in alphabetical order, starting from last names. Sunmi found her seat in the second column, second to last row. As she sat down, she greeted the very little amount of students that had already occupied the class with small nods and quiet "hello"s. Some were out their seats interacting with other students, in which she assumed were already friends, others just sat alone doing silent activities. Sunmi wasn't a big interactor and often got nervous talking to people she didn't know, so she decided to plug in her earbuds and rest her eyes for the time being. She kept her music low enough so she can hear the sound of chattering disappear once the teacher came in.

The teacher stepped in and did a quick introduction before going into roll call. Sunmi waited for her name to be called and go back into napping. Her ears perked and she had her hand ready to be raised as she heard "Choi Sun-" come out, but instead of "Choi Sunmi" it was "Choi Seungcheol."

Oh dear god she thought to herself, internally screaming. Her name was called directly after. She raised her hand and quickly put her head back down for the rest of the roll call.

A finger gently tapped her on the top of her head. She moved her head ever so slightly so her eyes would peek out from inbetween her arm, just enough to make eye contact with the person in front of her.

"Roll call finished," the boy informed.

"Oh thanks," Sunmi replied, stretching back in her seat and ruffling the front of her hair to fix the mess on her head.

"No problem, Choi Sunmi~" he sang with a smile and turned back around.

Sunmi had a smile plastered on her face, but it wasn't those "oh my god a cute person said hi to me" smiles. Nope. It was one of those "oh my god what did I just do my life is ruined" smile. How could she have forgotten that this is the same guy that shared the same last name as her? The same guy that could serve as a potential threat to her yet to be peaceful senior year? She had always been pestered for sharing last names with someone of the opposite gender, even if she thought things may turn out different she couldn't let her guard down, because up until now, things have not been any different at all. Sure, this may sound petty, but imagine how infuriating it is to constantly be shipped with some random stranger that you may or may not even like, and to make it worse ruin possible relationships that could have started, simply because of sharing one small thing. What Sunmi couldn't comprehend was why she was the only one with this problem. Hell, Choi isn't even that rare of a surname! There were even other people besides her who shared surnames with each other.

The bell rang, indicating the beginning of their first break. Also cuing Sunmi to promptly leave her seat. She grabbed her things, because she never leaves her things alone, and walked out the room.

"Sunmi, wait!" Someone called out to her before she was able to get far.

She turned around to whoever was addressing her. Dear lord why are you testing me?

"Yes?" Just because she didn't want to interact with him didn't mean she was rude, she'll answer anyone talking to her.

"You left this behind, here," Seungcheol handed her a pen and before she was able to say anything he flashed another smile and left.

"Uh... but this isn't mine..." with a blank expression she looked at the pink pencil with a bear at the very top. She had to admit it was very cute, and exactly her style, but it wasn't hers to keep. She placed it into her bag for safekeeping and made sure to find the owner later. She didn't want to keep it and be accused of stealing later on.

Just as she was about to leave, someone else called her name. A boy with brown, wavy hair and a gentle, cat-esque face approached her.

"Oh Jisoo, I was just about to look for you. Perfect timing." The two of them bumped elbows together, followed by a low-five and a handshake in which they pulled each other in and bump shoulders. It was their own personal handshake they've been doing since they were young.

"Awh I'm flattered, but anywho, who was that? Made a new friend already?" he asked with a grin and crescent eyes overwhelmed by thick eyebags.

"Just a classmate."

"Hmm he looked really friendly, we should invite him to hangout," Jisoo turned his head around as the two walked. He turned back, waiting for a response.

"Yeah I'd rather not," she replied as-a-matter-of-factly.

The boy furrowed his eyebrows together, "Why not? It's not like you two have the same last name or something." Sunmi stayed quiet and kept moving forward.

"What? Oh my god no way," his smile grew and his mouth was left wide open, with his hand covering it as he laughed, "you two should get married!" Jisoo couldn't help but .

Sunmi jabbed him in his side and slapped the back of his head, "This kid... You know, you're probably the reason why this dumb joke always circulates!"

"Haha sorry, I can't help myself. It's still the funniest thing I've heard all my life. Who even came up with that logic to begin with?"

"I don't know and I don't care," she snarled. They may be best friends but Sunmi always has the urge to drop kick Jisoo.

Break was coming to an end and the two parted ways, going back to their respective classes. When Sunmi walked in that certain someone was already in his seat. She walked over to his desk and placed the pencil at the corner. Seungcheol looked at her with a puzzled expression.

"Thanks for the pencil, but it's not mine." She walked past and sat behind him.

He turned around and waved the pencil in her face, "Well, don't you want it?"

"No I don't." That was a lie.

"But why not?" He continued to press on.

"Obviously it's not mine and is someone else's. I'm not going to take what isn't mine."

"Well it's your lucky day!" he cheered, "because this doesn't belong to anyone! I've already asked." He stated with his nose high in the air, as if he'd accomplished some honorable feat.

"That makes me not want it even more. Who knows where that's been." This wasn't a lie. She broke eye contact with the other. She was done talking to him. Seungcheol, however, didn't see it that way. He adjusted his body so it'd be fully facing Sunmi and leaned in on her desk, crossing his arms together and resting his head on it, looking up towards her face. He made himself comfortable, but Sunmi the opposite.

"You're pretty cold, aren't ya?"

Was she acting cold? No, of course not. She's being realistic.

She let out a sigh, "Look. I really don't want it. Can't you bother someone else about it? I barely even know you and you're already in my personal space, it's making me uncomfortable."

Seungcheol got off of her desk and lowered his gaze from her. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and apologized for his behavior, "Sorry, I just thought it would have suited you.."

Sunmi was thrown off by his words. "Whatever," she said under her breath. She couldn't help but feel a bit bad after he had turn around. Maybe I was being a little too harsh...

When school ended, Sunmi planned to apologize but thought of it as too weird. Why would she apologize? This was exactly what she wanted anyways. She brushed off the uneasiness she felt earlier, like dust that had fallen on her shoulders. Her phone buzzed the moment she stepped out the room. She pulled out an iphone, covered in a pastel pink, rilakkuma decoden case, and looked at the screen. It was a text from Jisoo.

He had asked if she wanted to check out any of the clubs before heading home, but today had been an exhausting first day, for her at least, so she kindly rejected his offer. Staying at school was the last of her priorities.
