It is a picture of serenity where the wedding ceremony is to take place with the white setup of furniture and decorations on the grass lawn of Ocean Suites Hotel on the exotic island of Jeju. A destination commonly associated with romance love and beauty. The venue overlooks the ocean – the waterview behind the altar providing the perfect backdrop for the special occasion, yet having enough distance so that strong wind will not be a part of their list of burdens. The weather is behaving perfectly as well, the sky is a rich hue, the sunshine not too strong, not too weak – just right. Yoona cannot hope for better for the couple – though constantly checking the weather forecast and putting in back-up plan procedures due to the weather variability on islands… just in case – so that the perfect day cannot be ruined.

She smiles as she walks up towards her team that is working diligently on transforming the venue from the simple white scheme to the theme of the day. Onew is setting up the video recorder on the tripod at the beginning of the aisle. He looks up and greets Yoona by calling out to her. He holds the camera in his hand as he turns around to film her.

“ehh, save it for someone more photogenic.”

“ehh noona, what kind of statement is that?” Yoona shakes her head at his reply and walks towards the pewters. She spots Heechul securing the fluttering piece of draping tulle to the archway at the altar – creating the desired canopy- like effect. She gives him a thumbs up and he returns the gesture, continuing on with the task. Luhan her and Sooyoung’s assistant for the day, is finishing off with tying ribbons to the seats – giving a hand to heechul’s partner Baekhyun for setting up today.

She then approaches the girl, hair tied up, with her eyes fixated on her camera lens and the scenery in front of her. She places a gentle hand on Luna who is surprised and already knows what Yoona is about to say. Yoona points at the camera and gives her a pointed look.

“Ahhh unnie, but it’s pretty unnie. Besides marketing requested promotion shots”

“But Luna my dear girl, you are not our photographer, not for today. You’re one of our stars. We’ll leave this work to Sungmin and Kyuhyun alright?” Yoona smiles as she fixes a few astray strands of hair into place. Luna looks as if she does not want to comply, but nods in the end with a giggle. Yoona spots the pout hanging on the edge of the younger one’s lips. “Alright, you can do the prepatory shots for the bride. Happy?” Yoona beams as she watches the joy instantly spread on Luna’s face.  Luna nods emphatically while thanking her unnie.

“Ready for rehearsal?” Yoona asks enthusiastically after spotting Yuri heading towards them. With a hug, a few giggles and a few winks, the two head to the side of the altar where the microphone stand stands elegantly next to the white grand piano.

Yoona makes her way towards the guest book table where Tiffany stands, crossing her arms and propping a hand under her chin as she tilts her head.

“What’s wrong?” – Yoona asks over Luna’s microphone test assisted by Yuri.

“Left, right or centre?” She shifts the pair of teddy bear dolls to the corresponding positions as she speaks.

“Left” Yoona nods reassuringly

“I thought so” Tiffany immediately shifts the teddy bears to their original position on the table.

They are interrupted by Sunny bringing over the tray of corsages. She begins to explain cclearly over through her earpiece to ensure there is no confusion.

“Like we said in briefing, white ones are for our staff, the lilac and white ones…”

“Lilac?” the crew suddenly get another voice through their headsets. Heechul tries hiding his snigger as he uses the back of his hand to hide his lips. The crew turn their heads to locate their photographer who is crouched with his camera in hand at the end of the aisle.

“Purple, Kyuhyun ah, purple.” Sunny explains patiently and continues. “so purple and white are for the bridal party and family members.”

Yoona reminds Luna to prepare to get changed soon through her earpiece. She then leaves the team behind with Sunny hanging purple pomander balls (or kissing balls as people like to call them), the two girls sending their harmony echoing through the air and Luhan helping Sunny distribute little paper packets of flower petals onto the chairs closest to the end of the aisle. Baekhyun and Heechul have now moved onto following Sunny’s instruction and are strewing petals along the sides of the aisle as the white material progresses towards the altar.

***

The door opens to a little crack, enough to reveal someone peeking out from behind the door. It is Sunhwa- one of the bridesmaids. She smiles and greets Yoona as she pulls the door open wider to let her in. She stays hiding part of herself behind the door as she does so.

“Why are you hiding behind the door?”

“Oh? I was trying on this hair accessory” she holds out the embellished hair comb that she was trying to conceal. “when I tried pulling it out, I ruined the updo they helped me do so perfectly.” Yoona smiles at Sunhwa comfortingly.

“Now I can’t seem to do a good enough one. ” Yoona sneaks a glance furhter into the room and spots her friend and professional hairdresser Taeyeon working her art on the locks of another bridesmaid, Hana. Yoona immediately leads the concerned bridesmaid over to the bed and tells her to stop frowning because it would only give her wrinkles. She drops her folder onto the bed next to her and begins pinning a new updo for her skilfully twisting strands of hair into form. As she finishes off, she taps SUnhwa on the shoulder and points at the mirror on the wall. At seeing the satisfactory result, they grin at each others’ reflection.

“Oh thank you Yoona, you saved the day”

“Oh I didn’t do anything.” She laughs, and jokes “wouldn’t want a bridesmaid to walk down the aisle with such a worried expression right?” She positions herself to face Sunhwa to get her words through, “Don’t be nervous, relax. At least you’re not the one having to wait for his bride at the end of the aisle right?” Yoona winked. Sunhwa thinks for a moment and asks

“Is it true?”

“Every single time. You should pay attention to the look on his face. And the mates sometimes poking fun at him.” Sunhwa evidently relaxes with her laughter.

They both turn just in time to see Sooyoung walking their way.

“All good?” Yoona begins

“Excellent.” Sooyoung replies holding up a thumb while clasping her clipboard.

“Sunny brought everything up already?” Yoona asks just as  Sooyoung points her to the floral pieces resting on top of the bedside cupboard.

“Yes, Hyoyeon brought the dress and accessories already.  She’s just helping with the boutoinere with the groom’s men. Since you’re here I should be checking on the groom’s side” she explains.

“Alright, has Sungmin taken the preparatory shots of the dress and shoes yet?”

“We’re onto that, he’s just taking shots of her the bride getting her makeup done.”

“I’ll just remind the family of the few minor details we got a little stuck on during rehearsal.”

“Yep, exactly like rehearsal, but better… oh and that except we might get extra guests.”

“just do what we usually do.” Yoona shrugs with a smile and heads towards Victoria who is now applying the finishing touches on Hyosung, the bride, leaving Sooyoung to exit.

She gathers the bride and her three best friends – her lovely maids for the day – while they are still in their robes, to sit on the bed and lean against the bedhead. To set the mood and atmosphere to capture, she tells them to imagine the look of the groom at the end of the aisle and hwo it would look if she didn’t turn up even after the Jieun – the maid of honour finsihed walking the entire length. And SUngmin their photographer captures the moment as the girls look at each other and exchange carefree laughter. He gives a thumbs up to Yoona.

As soon as the bridesmaids are finished dressing up and Luna has arrived – perfectly dressed and ready for her part in the event- and has taken over Sungmin’s part, yoona asks the maids to help bring the gown over. Luna captures the moments the friends are helping the bride into her dress, perfectly in still life –framing the moment forever. These would go into the precious collection of emotional moments in the bride’s memorabilia along with the picture of mother’s tear filled smile, and the proud expression her father carried on his face with a hint of sadness during the first look at their daughter all dressed in white, carrying her bouquet and reciprocating the tangle of emotions back at them.

Without knowing, through nervous chatter, excited laughter and teary moments in between, the girls inside the room hear a knock on the door. Yoona gives a nod at Hyosung and Jieun passes an envelope into the bride’s hands. She clasps onto it tightly while looking from left to right at her friends. They all place their hands of comfort on her shoulder. That is all she needs after in a breath to stand up and head towards the door where photographers wait on either side.

Hyosung was about to press her ear to the door but stops just as she hears her name being called from the other side of the door.

“Hyosung ah?” Hyosung covers with her hand and giggles, turning back to look at her friends for help.

“Hyosung?” Her soon to be husband continues to call. As hyosung is about to reply, Sunhwa steps up and calls out loudly

“Yah, what?” The girls burst into a fit of giggles inside. The poor groom is taken aback but nevertheless.

“Sunhwa ssi, where’s Hyosung?”

“There is no hyosung here.”

“What?” The mixture of worry, shock and confusion on Kikwang’s face was well captured by the videogrpaher, Onew.

“There’s only a Mrs Lee” Hana replies.

“Mrs…” as realisation dawns on his face, the smile that spreads across his face is both proud and sweet. “Then Mrs Lee, are you there?”

Finally he hears his beloved bride’s voice

“I’m not Mrs Lee yet”

“Soon you’ll be”

“Come on, we’ll be here until nightfall. Do you not want to get married?” the bridesmaids shout things incoherently.

“Then Mrs Lee…to be? Please open the door a little.” As the two place their hands on the handle, and Hyosung pulls the door ajar, while hiding behind it, the photographers take another snapshot.

They exchange their letters around the door and close it again. Hyosung gently opens it to reveal the letter with all the sweet words and love the groom was unable to express in front of her inked onto the paper.

It takes two just a few words to start the teary sensation behind her eyes.

“Dear my best friend.” She reads the rest silently about the gratefulness, the joy he has had, the excitement for the continuation of their journey hand in hand while her bridesmaids try to comfort her.

………………

She reads out the last few words

“I’ll be waiting for you at the end of the aisle… like I have always been waiting all my life to meet you. with unchanging and undying love, your bestest friend Kikwang.”

Yoona holds back her own tears watching the bridesmaids pull the bride in for a tight embrace.

They know the groom has also finished his read as he shouts out a big

“HYOSUNG I love you!" With no fear of disturbing the neighbouring rooms in the hallway.

“I love you too.”

*****

Yuri’s fingers begin to enchant the crowd with the gentle introduction of the processional music marking the beginning of the ceremony. Every soul on the ceremonial grounds turns their head to the entrance of the aisle, waiting. And so it happens. A boy and a girl dressed in white step onto the white carpet.  The ring boy is carrying a chalkboard sign that says

‘kikwang ajhussi, here comes the love of your life.’

The message brings a stir of gentle laughter amongst the guests and a few adoring sighs. Beside him, the flowergirl clutches onto her basket almost protectively. She even manages to smile as she reaches halfway down the aisle. With the atttention of the crowd stolen by the activity on the aisle, the photographers and videoographers use their art and skill to capture it all.

Behind the scenes, around the corner of some hedges, the bride and her maids gather in hushed excitement and nervousness. Sunhwa takes a peek at the end of the aisle and manages to spot the groom’s expression. She turns to find Yoona who nods and winks at her. Yoona is in the middle of positioning the train of Hyosung’s skirt when she hears Sooyoung’s voice through her ear piece.

“Almost ready for entrance, in 10” Yoona walks along and taps Sunhwa on the arm.

“That’s you dear”

Soon, Luna steps up to the microphone and blesses the crowd with her first note,

Heart beats fast. Colours and promises

It seems as if the lyrics were made for this moment as it describes the emotions and picture of the crowd, the ceremony, and the groom who in all nervousness just bounces on his feet, trying not to reveal any of his vulnerability to his mates who just crowded beside him.

The first of the bridesmaids, Sunhwa steps onto the carpet in her lilac knee length chiffon dress. She is carrying her bouquet of lilac roses and hydrangeas in her one hand, her other is positioned strangely behind her back as if she was a waitress about to serve in the reception later. Shaking her head playfully, still smiling and she brings her other hand away from her back. She holds out a little chalkboard sign hanging with the message

“not so fast” This time earning they earn real laughter as some of the guests turn to catch Kikwang making a strange face. She continues with careful steps down the aisle as if it was any other wedding.

Just as Sunhwa reaches past a certain number of pews, Hana the next bridesmaid in line, gracefully steps onto the carpet with her floorlength one shoulder chiffon dress which flows with her movement.  She too hides a sign behind her back and brings it out with a subtle feign of innocence.

“Patience please, future brother in law” The guests turn to laugh at Kikwang who just closes his eyes as if bearing pain, frowns and nods comically. His mates take the opportunity to further worsen the sitation Yoseob taking a closeup photograph, Doojoon fanning him with his hand.

The guests crane their neck back to the far end. They spot another beautiful girl in a dress that matches the other bridesmaids’ in colour. Unlike the other two, Jieun does not even bother hiding her message as she handles her bouquet in one hand and holds the sign in front of her.

‘alright alright… here she comes.” She smiles and shakes her head at the scene happening at the front of the aisle. All the guests do not even bother to turn their heads back to the altar this time. They catch a glimpse of white approaching them. It is a moment where people hold their breaths. It seems as if only Yuri and Luna are the only ones who are instilled with life as they carry on their magic.

Time stands still. Beauty and all she is.

The long awaited moment arrives as the bride appears at the end of the aisle in perfect opulence safely secured in her fathers’ arm. He stands tall and proud next to his daughter as guardian since the moment she entered this world. The effort he makes and almost succeeds in hiding the reluctance is commendable.

Kikwang, the groom is at a loss of how to react. So many sensations happen at once as he locks his gaze with the love of his life. He glimpses the past, and flashes pictures of their future. It is not the way the white mermaid gown and fluttering veil accentuates her beauty. It is something that even the bouquet of lilac roses white hydrangeas and hydrangeas cannot match. It is the beauty of just knowing how lucky this moment is happening right now. So lucky to have her, the her he knew all along, no pretences just her and him. And that’s what he pictures, the Hyosung he met the first day and the Hyosung in unimaginable beauty who is slowly making her way to him. But he realises the moment her eyes meet his that that is all he ever needed. The present and he knew all along. He is amazed at how many thoughts he seems to have already have had in that short span of time. He wonders why she is not even half way down the aisle yet.

The frozen exhilaration, is almost palpable. And Hyosung feels it tingling on her skin as she steps onto the white carpet. She finds the many familiar faces among the crowd, all showering her with their silent blessings and messages. But with that momentary distraction, she finds what she was probably searching for all along. Her eyes meet with her groom. It is then as if everything is happening in its own accord, the way her feet take her in his direction.

She fights her own tears, at disbelief and overwhelming gladness that this is reality.

Yoona walks at the very side of the chairs, behind all the guests’ turned bodies. Her silent wish to catching the moment that almost goes almost unnoticed comes true as she witnesses fall in place.

The groom, after biting his lips, seemingly in deep thought, finally smiles. Not just any smile. It is a grin of  raw heart-felt emotion. She believes that this exchange speaks more to each other than the pre-wedding letters. And the silent nonverbal conversation does not end there. Yoona watches as Hyosung shyly looks down and back up with a giggle on her face. A sweetness spreads in Yoona’s chest.

It is only Kikwang that spots Hyosung responding the way he had always remembered the first time she caught him blankly staring at her. And he knows she can read what it all means to him. The next thing he knows is her father staring deeply into his eyes and he feels the weight of his words, before he places her daughters hand into his.

The time resumes again, and everything picks up speed. The vows, every tiny moment becomes a blur of events. not a moment was devalued in any way though. Not to mention, they have the help of the many captured clips and photographs to help them revisit. Especially the moment the veil’s blusher is lifted and the groom finally gets to plant his kiss on the bride’s lips.

Yoona makes her way back down to the end of the aisle, picking up a fallen pocket of petals and handing them back to the guest on her way. She turns her head to find Sooyoung keeping a close eye on the group of guests as the ceremonalist makes his speech. As she slowly turns her head back, she notices something or perhaps someon ethat successfully brushes all the joy, peace and security she had received from the ceremony away.  Its those dark eyes, the momentary glance she catches. And her immediate reaction to appear to be looking elsewhere. She wonders how she had not registered the new guests’ presence. But she decides not to dwell on that matter, and stays on the opposite side of the aisle, closer to Tiffany’s guest reception desk instead of continuing for her original destination of the end of the aisle.

***

The atmosphere is serene during the mini cocktail service but growing with warmth as the guests from both sides of the family mingle, share jokes and engage in friendly chatter in the grand hotel function room. The high glass windows let ample amounts of natural light into the room as they enjoy the lovely retreat of refreshments and comfortable catching up with friends and acquaintances. The bride and groom finally join the continued gathering after finishing taking group photos outside. But they are once more approached endlessly by family and friends carrying their congratulatory messages and blessings.

Changmin folds his arm and stands quietly in one corner while Yeonhee is in deep conversation on her phone. He takes in his surroundings, paying attention to some of the intricately applied details and the way the song arrangements now being played by one of the SM wedding workers on the piano he believes may be uniquely composed. He watches the photographer kneeling to capture photos of the bride and groom, then a petite girl comes along and collects the brides’ bouquet. On her way towards a table where all the other bouquets are residing in vases of water, a particular someone smiles and says something to her. He cannot seem to really remove his eyes from the activity across the room, following the wedding planner as she rushes to one corner and returns to the side of an elderly lady with a chair in hand when all the lounges available in the room were taken by other guests. He continues to watch her crouch down and talk to the now happily smiling lady as they exchange conversation. Yeonhee notifies him of the need for her to leave to deal with something. By the time she leaves his side he is unable to locate the wedding planner again.

“Shim changmin?!” The call startles Changmin who turns around hoping his expression did not reveal the shock he had just felt. He finds a guy removing the camera from his face. What greets him is a familiar grin. Although it has been a while since he has seen this friend, nothing seems to have changed especially his ignorance. Not that he really ever minded. Changmin watches Kyuhyun look towards the door which which Yeonhee had just left through. He does not say anything.

“yah, you jerk, where have you been and what have you been doing? Haven’t seen you since you graduated. You disappeared.” Kyuhyun slapps his companion hard on the arm, and retracts his hand from the sting. His statement is true though, Changmin had left high school and his social circle behind. In fact he has not seen anyone from high school lever since the day of graduation.

“What are you doing here?”

“what do you think?” Changmin smirks with a raised eyebrow. He crosses his arms casually after picking up a glass of champagne and thanking the attendant

“what else could i have been doing? Just focused on my studies and my work afterwards”

“Yah, still so serious”Kyuhyun alost frowns with disapproval, but it IS Changmin and they have been best friends in high school so he knows better. He is too busy shaking his head to notice the moment Changmin had taken to think.

“And you’re still not taking things seriously.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment” his chin and pretends to be in deep thought.

Yoona approaches Kyuhyun in quick steps but realises who he is talking to.

Chagnmin catches her turning on the spot and walking away – her brwon locks flowing behind her. He interrupts Kyuhyun mid conversation.

“I think she was looking for you.” He says indifferently, lifting his champagne glass in the direction of the departing girl.

“Oh? Yoona” he calls and Yoona turns gingerly to look back. “were you looking for me?” Kyuhyun asks with a cheeky tone but unlike the normal disapproving reaction he was expecting, she seems to have ignored the tone… she looks distracted. Kyhuhyun does not realise how she avoids looking at his companion. She tilts her head as she tries to figure out what her question was again.

“oh." She says, having recollected her thoughts. “have you seen Onew by any chance?”

“He’s supposed to be working on the same day edit right?”

“Yes but there was no power point outside so he came in here earlier.”

“He wasn’t here when I came in here with the first few guests” Kyuhyun answers intently and starts scanning the room.

“It’s alright, I’ll keep looking” she is about to make her leave again (turning a bit too hastily) but is stopped so she turns back around reluctantly.

“Hey this is my high school friend, Shim Changmin,” he gestures to his companion. “we were best buddies ” he nods to himself, ignoring the questioning side-glance from Changmin.

Yoona bites her inner lip and releases a breath she was holding.

“is that so?” she slowly looks up at him.

“Come on, handshake. This is my colleague Im Yoona. Pretty isn’t she?”

Kyuhyun lifts Changmin’s arm out to Yoona. Changmin is about to make a comment, but Yoona is already bowing

“Hello, Mr Shim, hope you’re enjoying the wedding.” She forces something close to a smile. But she does not leave much of a break before excusing her own exit. “Anyway, I apologise I need to find… someone”

Shim does not remove his eyes from her as she leaves them without waiting for a reply of any sort and watches as she speaks to a colleague he had also met before. Sooyoung looks into his direction and nods with a professional smile.

Kyuhyun sees Sooyoung approaching their direction. Raises his eyebrows and mutters to Changmin

“Here comes the difficult one.” He turns aroud to reach for a glass of water from the attendant. Before the glass reaches his lips, he says

“Oh and who was that earlier?” referring to Yeonhee as he quenches his thirst.

“My fiancee” Changmin simply states. Kyuhyun did not think he heard right so he merely looks at Changmin again. The taller one rephrases the statement “I’m getting married.”

Just as the other wedding planner Sooyoung was within a five metre distance, Kyuhyun spits out the water he had just gulped into his mouth. Luckily, it had not landed on anyone.

“why does everyone have that reaction?” changmin mutters. He hears the pastened sound of clicking heels.

“Are you serious?!” he says taking the tissue Changmin had just handed him. “You?” Changmin nods.

“Wait, you were the only one who hadn’t dated in high school. You always focus on only work and studies. Impossible! You wouldn’t have the time.” Kyuhyun is dissatisfied with Changmin’s smirk and one shouldered shrug as a reply. He remains in disbelief.

“What? Is that jealousy”

“I have the benefits of being untied, all those pretty ladies out there. Besides,” Unfazed, Kyuhyun is about to continue before he is cut off mid-sentence.

“Cho Kyuhyun” her voice is filled with reprimand. Cho Kyuhyun turns around to find his colleague and the disgust in her eyes. “Did you just do that?”

Changmin clasps his hands together in front of him, watching while hiding his amusement and concern for his best friend.

“That’s disgusting!” Sooyoung adds triggering Changmin to hide his mouth behind a fist. Kyuhyun has his mouth agape, trying to find an appropriate defence but fails to find one. He nudges Changmin with his elbow.

“Actually, Ms Choi, the fault is actually mine.” But she cuts across him

“I don’t see how that can be your fault in anyway Mr Shim. Besides…” she continues are looking around “In front of guests?!” and so the scolding session resumes “Since when is that acceptable behaviour?”

“I’m sorry” he bows his head low.

“reflection essay on my desk the mornign we return to work in office.” She takes a deep breath, turns to Changmin and bows.

“Mr Shim, I deeply apologise for you having to see that disappointing behaviour from my colleague here.” Changmin can only focus on the funny face Kyuhyun is pulling behind Sooyoung’s shoulder. Luckily he has mastered the art of restraining his expression of emotion. He is about to say something about the incident but Kyuhyun just shakes his head

“I assure you that that is the first time that has happened.” Sooyoung continues. Upon hearing this, Changmin eyes Kyuhyun doubtfully but plays along, nodding in agreement. “Is Ms Lee in the restroom?”

“Oh, no, she has had some matters to deal with so she had to leave for a little.”

“Well, I do hope you both are finding our work acceptable.”

“Both of us find that the wedding has so far exceeded our expectations in many ways. We’d have to see the organisation of the reception first to come to a concrete decision”

“Well, I certainly hope we do not disappoint.” Sooyoung makes her final words loud and clear (even turning her head back in Kyuhyun’s direction mid-sentence). She smiles and is about to excuse herself but turns to Kyuhyun. “Kyuhyun ssi, you do realise that Sungmin ssi has been taking most of the photographs in this session?” she says pointedly.

Kyuhyun holds his camera up indicatively. And forces a smile. When Sooyoung leaves, he curses

“Reflection essay on my desk tomorrow morning” Kyuhyun repeats and mocks Sooyoung’s words in a funny tone. He turns to Changmin. “You’re writing that essay for me.” He concludes.

Changmin starts to walk away from his mate as if he were a lunatic. Kyuhyun catches up, looking grudgingly at his camera.

“I should have taken a photogrpah of her breathign fire. But that would just dirty my camera”

“Hey, she’s just doing her job” Changmin reasons logically

“yeah yeah… if you weren’t getting married I’d say you have interest in her” his comment makign Changmin roll his eyes and shake his head at how that statement came out of grudge. “Oh so you ARE getting married” he is suddenly energetic again and points his accusing finger at Changmin.

“Yeah, that’s what I was trying to tell you. You wouldn’t believe me”

“And you’re considering our agency?”

“Considering”

“SO that’s why you’re here!” he exclaims, putting all the pieces of informaiton together. He slings an arm around Changmin’s shoulder again “Well I tell you now… if you do use us, choose the pretty and nice type like Yoona, not people like that” he jabs his finger in the direction of Sooyoung. Changmin’s eyebrows knit together. For a second kyuhyun almost believes that he disapproves of his attitude towards his colleague. But being best friends for the whole high school career allows him to think otherwise. It takes a few seconds when Changmin’s lip quirks up.

“Is she that bad?”
