Chapter 5

Bittersweet

"Hmm... well, your technique is good, and your tone was really good, too." Eunjoo said, reflecting on Chunji's singing. "One thing I think you can improve on is emotion. You can really see that you're focused on pitching everything perfectly and having everything on beat, but I think... the delivery of emotions was a bit weak. I mean, we, as singers, want the listeners to feel things, right?" She smiled, then looked down, losing her confidence. "I mean, that's what think. I'm not a professional, either.'

Chunji laughed. "No, you're really right. I was actually doing that without realising it! You're like a freaking genie, Eunjoo."

Eunjoo flushed. Did he just compliment her?

She tugged on the sleeve of her uniform. "Anyway, what I did was think about the song and maybe think of a situation that would trigger the emotion that matches well with that song, and especially the lyrics, but now, since I've been singing for a long time, it comes naturally. Of course, not trying to brag or anything. For example, with 'A night like tonight', I'd think of someone else in the situation where they're away from their lover and is going through a hard time and longs to be with their lover again. Since, of course, I haven't been in that situation."

Chunji's left eyebrow flicked up for a second, then he nodded thoughtfully. "Thanks so much for the advice, Eunjoo." Then, a playful smile danced on his mouth as his eyes lit up. "Even though I've heard you before, can you give me an example?" he asked.

"H-huh? Me?" Eunjoo stammered. His sudden request had surprised her. Of course, she was used to singing in front of people. Whether in a competition, for her teacher, or because of a request, she'd done them all. That didn't mean that she wasn't nervous each time. Eunjoo always thought that all she had was singing, since, that was what she'd been doing for over a decade. If she messed up on singing, too, what else would she have left?

"Of course! What, is Eunjoo sunbae nervous?" Chunji teased, pinching her cheek. Eunjoo had always had chubby cheeks, so many people commented on how marshmellow-like they were.

Eunjoo just laughed and took a deep breath. "Do you want to hear me or not?" She asked, and Chunji motioned to her to start with an encouraging smile. "Alright, I'll sing "Love Rain" by Kim Taewoo*."

"I'm sure you've had someone that you loved leave you
You might have thought it was all my fault
That's why I couldn't hold onto you

I thought that I could forget small pains like this
and that another love would come and find me
why I can't forget about you?

I just look up at the sky
and cry out please love me again
If only this small wish in my heart
would turn into rain and fall from the sky

If my love comes into your head
the memories comes alive again
If my love comes into your heart
I'm reminded of our precious love

If my love touches your lips
you cry out to me that you love me
following the rainy street...
As you walk, walk, walk
you will see the me that you were waiting for

With the key called trust
I open the box called love
I call to send a  prayer called love
Even if my heart can't find you..."

Once Eunjoo finished, Chunji shook his head with a smile. Eunjoo had been so immersed in the song that she hadn't noticed that Chunji had sat down in front of her.

"Lee Eunjoo, how do you do it? It was like you were telling a story. Truth be told, I was entranced. Wow, you really know how to make someone feel bad." He laughed.

"Oh, come on. I've been singing like, three times as long as you! You'd be better than me for sure if you'd been singing that long." Eunjoo blushed.

"Yeah, yeah." Chunji said. Was he ever serious? "Anyway, I'm glad you're talking to me more, now. I thought you were super shy and quiet, but turns out you might even know how to make a joke!"

"Ha, ha. I'm going to go home now." Eunjoo stood up and dusted herself off. She waved bye to Chunji, who was still sitting, with a small smile.

"Bye! Just know this will happen again!" Chunji was waving back.

Eunjoo nodded, turned around and walked towards the tunnel of light.

A gust of wind blew past her and she felt the blood drain from her face, which told her that she was blushing. She also noticed that her heart was beating quickly. The thought of having a crush on Chunji entered Eunjoo's head and she giggled to herself. Well, it was probably true, so there was no use denying it to herself. She took out her phone and plugged in her earphones. Her music album mostly consisted of Exo's songs, and were joined by songs from more local musicians, like ones in the Min District whose music she really admired. She put it on shuffle and placed her phone in the pocket of her blazer. If was oddly cold, considering it was finally summer. But then again, Eunjoo was weak to the cold.

Eunjoo wasn't a newbie when it came to crushes. She usually liked guys she was more familiar with, so she was glad when she was near them, and she knew at least vaguely what they were like. Of course, she never told them. Rejection was scary. But another reason why Eunjoo never confessed was because her interest in the person faded away, and she never felt a burning urge to, either, which she thought would indicate her really... loving the person.

"Hey, what are you laughing at?" A voice came out of nowhere. The tone of the person asking wasn't a confronting voice, nor a joking one. It was genuine curiosity.

It surprised Eunjoo, anyway as she let out a short, tiny scream as she jumped. She clutched her heart as she realised it was just Suga.

"Must you surprise me each time we meet?" She asked, calming down. Suga sent her a gummy grin.

"Well, that'll be hard since we'll be meeting each other very often." he winked, making Eunjoo jokingly shiver in disgust.

Suga was, once again, wearing a hoodie, but the hoodie part was off, revealing Suga's head of pink hair. The sweater plainly white was a bit oversized, so Suga looked smaller than he was. He was also wearing black skinny jeans that contrasted the white sweater. The jeans also showed off Suga's legs that would make girls green in envy, and while it didn't go to that extent for Eunjoo, she was a tiny bit bitter.

"So, what are you doing out so late? You're still in your uniform, so I'm assuming you haven't gone home yet." Suga noticed. "Don't you kids have any homework, anymore?"

"And you ask why I call you old man?" Eunjoo muttered as she looked at her feet, but Suga had heard her.

"Excuse me?" he had an amused look on his face.

Eunjoo's head snapped up. "Uh, who asked you to eavesdrop on my conversation?" She interrogated.

"Conversation... with who, may I ask?" Suga held down a laugh.

"With... Joe Bob, my bestest friend ever!" Eunjoo stuck her tongue out at Suga. "I'm going home, ajusshi." She smiled and ran home.

Suga shook his head with a smile. Many things had changed, but she, apparently, hadn't.

*Once again from King of Masked Singers ^^' Eunji was (pretty obviously) one of my inspirations for Eunjoo's character, so I used her cover of "Love Rain", which can be seen here.

A/N: Thanks so much for everyone who's been reading! Also, I don't sing so I apologise if the things I'm saying about singing is not acurate :)
