Chapter 13

Bittersweet

It's super late but I made it super long thanks babes for waiting love you guys

“Anna! Noo!!” Byunghun hugged his pillow, eyes glued onto the screen, which was playing the popular animation.

Eunjoo, who’d seen this movie about a thousand times, observed the boy in amusement. Chunji laughed quietly and pushed her a bit to encourage her to go “comfort” him.

She scooted closer and tapped Byunghun’s shoulder, surprising him.

“Aish, what the fu- oh! Sorry, Eunjoo-sshi! I just- ugh. My emotions…” Byunghun shook his head, making the girl chuckle.

“It’s okay. This part gets to me each time, too.” Eunjoo smiled softly, then looked around the room. Jieun, who hadn’t seen this movie before, was completely immersed in the movie. Chunji was looking at her with so much love in his eyes that it even shocked Eunjoo. Who was she to try and steal that from Jieun? She looked back to the screen and saw the frozen Anna start to melt as Elsa hugged her.

She smiled. Would she be able to find true love, too? She shook her head. Now was not the point in her life that she should think about these things, and she should focus on more important things, like her grades, and her future singing career.

Eunjoo felt Byunghun softly let out a sigh of relief beside her. He was really into this, wasn’t he? She really hadn’t expected that from him, since he seemed so badass and charismatic.

As the movie came to end, Eunjoo’s mind filled with thoughts of Suga. Where was he? How was he doing? What was he thinking when she’d ran out the studio?

Sighing, Eunjoo put her head in her hands. No matter the , they were good friends, or had been good friends, and Eunjoo wanted to see him again so that she could leave on good terms.

“Oh, yeah!” Her head shot up as she remembered her summer vacation plans. She then looked around to make sure she wasn’t disturbing anything, and was relieved to see that the movie was over. “I forgot to tell you guys, I’m going away for the summer tomorrow. I’m staying with my aunt at Kim District until the week before school starts. Unfortunately, I won’t have any wifi, so we have to take many, many selfies so I can cry in loneliness when I’m there.”

“You’re going away for the whole summer?! What am I going to do without my best friend?” Chunji cried out.

“You’ll bear with it. Besides, you have Byunghun-sshi and Jieun. You won’t even notice I’m gone, I bet.” Eunjoo smiled softly, trying not to be affected by her best friend title. “Oh, and Jieun, I have to talk to you for a second, outside.”

The taller girl nodded hesitantly, and stood up to walk to a more private spot. Eunjoo did the same.

Once they were out of earshot, Eunjoo started talking quietly.

“Jieun, I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you about this earlier, and I should’ve done so earlier, because of your situation and all. What I’m saying is, you’re more than welcome to come with us to my aunt’s house. No one will ask any questions, you’ll be very welcome. Honestly. So, would you like to come with us? I’d be so anxious to just leave you here, especially because you won’t be able to contact me.”

Jieun’s eyes widened, then her eyebrows rose and quivered. She covered as her eyes started watering, and Eunjoo gasped in shock.

“Oh my gosh, what’s wrong?!” She asked worriedly.

“I… I just… I’m so thankful that I met you, and I’m so thankful for how caring you are. I can’t ever repay you for your care… thank you. Thank you so much. But I can’t accept this, and I’ll just stay here. Don’t worry about me, I’ll just call Chunji-sshi if I need to. Please, don’t worry about me, and have a wonderful vacation. Okay?” Jieun smiled, wiping her tears away. Eunjoo stared at the ground, biting her lip.

She was almost grateful that Jieun didn’t know Eunjoo’s real, inner thoughts, because she couldn’t help but think that Jieun wouldn’t be very thankful for her.

“I’ll miss you all! I’ll see you when school starts again!” Eunjoo waved as she exited the house. She was leaving early because she needed to wake up early the next day.

“We’ll all miss you too, Eunjoo!” Chunji smiled, and the two others nodded in agreement.

Eunjoo just smiled back at them, then turned around and started heading home.

As she passed the tunnel of light, she couldn’t help but stop where she was, and look around, as if Suga was hiding, waiting to surprise her again. After a few minutes, she sighed and kept walking in the silent darkness.

Once she reached home, she greeted her mom, who was making kimbap to eat while going to the Kim District the next day.

“Oh, there was a package for you. Here.” Eunjoo’s mother handed her an envelope.

Eunjoo took it gingerly and quickly opened it. When she saw its contents, her eyes widened twice as much and she slapped herself twice to make sure she wasn’t dreaming.

“Oh. My. Gosh.” She whispered to herself, and her mother looked at her in alarm.

“Why? What is it?” She asked her daughter.

“Two V.I.P. and backstage tickets to Exo’s solo concert.” Eunjoo read out loud, dangerously quietly.

“What? Who gave that to you?” Her mother asked, a smile on her face. The whole family knew how much Exo meant to Eunjoo.

“I have no idea, and there’s no sender.” Eunjoo checked the envelope, still uncharacteristically calm. “Oh, there’s a note. ‘For you and a friend. Have fun!’”

“And there’s no signature?” Her mom asked, and Eunjoo shook her head.

“I’m going to sleep now. Goodnight.” She bowed, and walked over to her room. Eunjoo’s mom looked up to where her daughter was walking in worry. Was she alright?

Eunjoo finally retreated into her room and closed the door.

The whole house was silent for a few more moments, until it was broken by a shrill scream, coming from none other than Eunjoo’s room.

“OH MY GOSH, I’M GOING TO SEE EXO!!” She screamed, and Eunjoo’s mother smiled. There she was.

“Alright, calm down, kids. Come on, calm down!” Eunjoo’s father lightly scolded. The family was in the car, about to start driving to the Kim District, and Eunjoo’s brother and sister were quarreling.

“Mom, she just hit me!” Jooyoung whined, glaring at his sister.

“He provoked me first! It’s not fair, you always get excused, you brat!” Iseul yelled back.

“Iseul, don’t call your older brother a brat.” Their mother said absent-mindedly, reviewing the map.

“I’ll won’t treat him like an older brother until he starts acting like one.” Iseul rolled her eyes, and Eunjoo brought a hand to , muffling her laughter.

When everyone in the family was in the car, the three children would play rock paper scissors, and whoever won would have the whole last row to themselves, and the other two siblings would have to sit next to each other in the middle row. Sometimes it wasn’t a problem, especially when Eunjoo was in the middle row.  However, this one was not one of the times.

“Hey, guys. It’s just a two-hour drive, alright? So, just SHUT UP FOR TWO HOURS.” Eunjoo leaned forward, hissing the last part. “Use the mp3’s that mom and dad bought you, and shhhhhhh.”

“Wise words, Eunjoo.” Their father turned around and gave her a firm thumbs up.

Eunjoo nodded, then leaned back. She hoped this trip wouldn’t feel longer than it should.

“We’re here, kids!”

Eunjoo breathed in sharply, opening her eyes. Had she slept the whole trip?

“Oh, thank God.” She whispered to herself, glad that she hadn’t needed to suffer through the arguments that her siblings undoubtedly had.

“What’s wrong with you? Why are you smiling?” Iseul asked, popping her head over the seat.

“None of your business, kiddo.” Eunjoo pushed her sister’s head back, making Iseul glare at her.

“Whatever. Get out, grandma.” The younger sister stuck out her tongue, then exited the car.

Eunjoo sighed and followed, then her jaw dropped at all the trees around. Her aunt was her mother’s older sister, and was a widow. Her house was a small bungalow, but she had over 2 acres of backyard that was surrounded by many trees and had a large, private driveway in the front. The Kim District was very spaced out and large, so most private properties were very large.

She breathed in deeply, and smiled. The fresh air calmed her down, and she hoped that she’d return to the Min District more relaxed.
