Chapter 10

Bittersweet

"Eunjoo! I did it!" The girl heard an excited voice call out, and she turned around, only to see Chunji excitedly skipping towards her with a huge grin on his face. "I got first at the singing competition! Niel even congratulated me after, he's not as rude as I thought he's be." The boy had showed up in the middle of lunch break, when Jieun had gone to the bathroom.

"Dude, he's actually really nice, I have no idea why you'd think he was rude in the first place." Eunjoo just shook her head with a smile, but went for a high five, anyway.

"Oh, by the way, is Jieun here today?" Chunji looked around anxiously.

"Yeah, she is. I... I asked her, and she said that she'd think about it." Eunjoo said. Of course, that's not what Jieun had said, but she'd have probably said so if she wasn't in the situation she was in, right?

"Wow, that's a better reaction than what I would have thought." The boy was still smiling brightly.

"Eunjoo, I'm back- oh!" The two turned to the new source of noise and both Chunji and Jieun, who'd returned from her bathroom trip, blushed immediately. Eunjoo dropped her smile and looked away for a second. She couldn't help but see that they looked really good together.

"Ah, Jieun-sshi. I don't know if you remember me, but we were in the same class last year?" Chunji said nervously, and Jieun timidly nodded.

"Eunjoo told me about... uh, yeah." Jieun bit her lip and started playing with her fingers.

Eunjoo was just blankly looking at them, when the bell indicating that the break had finished rang.

Saved by the bell. Oh, it's math time, so I can see Chunji for the whole period! She giggled in her mind, when her eyes widened in realisation. She couldn't think that when Chunji was going for Jieun! And had she been jealous of Jieun just a few minutes ago? Oh my god, I'm a psychopath! How could I have thought that?! She thought.

"Eunjoo, are you coming? We have math now, right?" Chunji innocently smiled at her, and she just nodded, in a daze.

Oh god, I'm disgusting.

"Eunjoo! Hey!" Suga ran up to Eunjoo while she was walking home, thinking guiltily back to what she had been thinking at lunch break. "Are you alright?" He asked with a concerned face.

"Suga, I'm such a terrible person!" She cried out, and without thinking, just hugged him tightly. Her head barely went over his shoulders, and she could feel him take in a sharp, surprised breath as she hugged him. After a few seconds, she could feel him relax a bit and start patting her head. She didn't dare cry again, staining yet another of his shirts with tears. Suga smelled a bit like mints and... strawberries?

Once she'd calmed down, Eunjoo pulled away and looked at the ground.

"Eunjoo, whatever you're thinking right now, forget it, because you're not a bad person. Just because we make mistakes, that doesn't make us bad people; it makes us human. So chin up, alright?" Suga reassured her. Eunjoo looked up at him again and gave him a look of thanks. Suga looked away nervously for a few seconds, and asked, "Hey, do you have any homework today?" Eunjoo shook her head, and Suga brightened up. "Do you want to visit the studio? No one should be there right now, and I go there when I'm feeling ty. So, what do you say?"

Eunjoo thought about it for a quick second, then nodded excitedly. It sounded fun, so why not?

The two got there pretty quickly, since both the tunnel of light and the studio were in downtown of the Min District. The studio was big, and looked very modern, with many large windows scattered artistically all over the building.

"Wait, so do the BTS gods come here to record and stuff?" Eunjoo asked excitedly. Suga nodded, and her eyes shone. "Woah, that's super cool! You should be really close to them, right? Wow." She breathed.

"Yeah, except I'd call them guardians more than gods. Namjoon has a small studio in the Kim District, but he usually uses that for composing." Suga nodded.

"But how do they even have free time at all? Even though the crime rate has really dropped throughout the last millennium, aren't there still things they need to do? Eunjoo asked curiously.

"The district polices take care of most of the smaller crimes crimes, but the guardians take care of all or most of the emergencies." Suga said smoothly, as if he'd been asked a thousand times. Eunjoo wondered why he knew all the answers about the guardians, but she decided to not ask any more questions, as the two had reached the entrance.

Suga tapped his hand on the detector and the door slid open and they entered the building. There were people bustling around, and Suga took Eunjoo's hand so she wouldn't get lost. The girl thought nothing at the action, as she was looking around in awe at the building. It looked a bit like the studio she had vocal lessons at, but about a thousand times cooler. The building she learned at was pretty old, having been built about two hundred years ago.

She was lead to a door with a sign saying "Recording studio 1". Suga pushed it open and sitting there was a man (or was he a boy?) wo only looked a bit older than her. He had jet black hair and was wearing a white t-shirt and black skinnies, looking at his phone.

"Oy, Jeon Jungkookie. What're you doing?" Suga asked with a grin on his face. The boy looked up with a bored look on his face, and Eunjoo realised it was the youngest guardian of BTS, the Jeon district's own Jeon Jungkook. They met eyes, and Eunjoo bowed quickly. Jungkook then gave her a gummy smile, revealing his perfect teeth and his eyes curving into crescent moons.

"Hi! And who might you be?" He asked curiously.

"Uh-uh, my name is Lee Eunjoo. It's... an honour to meet you!" Eunjoo stammered because, truth be told, she really didn't know how to act. "Sorry, it's my first time meeting a go- guardian and I don't know what to do, and... yeah."

Jungkook looked at her with a bewildered expression and looked at Suga, who brought his index finger to his mouth to tell him not to say anything stupid to Eunjoo.

"Well, it's an honour to be the... first guardian you've met. How old are you?" Jungkook asked.

"I'm 16, sir." Eunjoo said stiffly, and the two others laughed.

"Hey, I'm only two years older than you, so you can call me Jungkook oppa, alright?" The male winked, and Suga looked displeased.

"Ew, you're gross. Anyway, I just brought Eunjoo to the studio because she was feeling bad. I'm just going to start recording the intro to the new album, and then you can sing all you want, ok?" Euga smiled at Eunjoo, who nodded.

Suga stepped towards the mic and slipped his headphones on.

"So, you sing?" Jungkook asked the girl curiously, who nodded. "Hey, we can do a duet later! We just have to wait for old man Suga to finish his recording." The two snickered, and Suga looked at them with a joking glare.

"Hey, Jeon Jungkookie! No flirting with Eunjoo, you creep!" He scolded, and the younger boy just mocked him exaggeratedly, and Eunjoo giggled behind her hands.

"I'm going to start, ok?" Suga gave them an ok sign, and the two observers nodded.

The song started with heavy breaths and as far as Eunjoo could tell, a piano and a violin started playing a melancholy tune.

"Today of all days, the rim looks far away.
On the court, I breathe a deep sigh
A boy who’s terrified of reality
When he throws the ball
It’ll only become his heart
Throwing the ball alone
The one I throw at the rim
Countless worries and life’s causes of worry
I pretend to know the world but
My body is still not fully cooked
"

Eunjoo closed her eyes; the lyrics were really good and relatable.

"Saying everything in the world will work out
Shouting uselessly
But the world actually gives me horror
If it’s that way, stop
The thoughts that fill my head
Instead of the ball, I throw my future
The horoscope that others paint
Disqualified from the criteria of success
Thanks to you the worries spread like cancer
God damn it!

Suddenly, something in Eunjoo's mind snapped as her eyes shot open. Meanwhile, Suga had also closed his eyes and was rapping passionitely into the mic. Sincerity was dripping from the tone of voice

"The sense of reality that looms
Others have ran ahead of me but
Why am I still here
Breathe breathe
Or dream a dream
My heartbeat has stopped now
Paddle again
Living while ignoring being caught up in the weak double standards of others
and like the sun set on the court,
the sun will set on your life
What am i doin’ with my life
This moment
It will never come again
It won’t come to me again
Am I happy right now?
"

Quickly, without listening to the rest of the song, Eunjoo took a deep breath as she ran out the door, it silently swinging open and shut, creating a soft breeze in the room.

"That answer is already fixed,
I’m happy
."

The heavy breathing started again, and Suga opened his eyes again, but was only met with a confused looking Jungkook sitting there.

"Uh, she left, and looked a bit pained." Jungkook reported, and Suga could only frown.

Pain? Was she alright?
