Chapter 1

Bittersweet

“Uh, what do you mean you’re all moving to the Jeon district?” Eunjoo asked unbelievingly.

“Come on, Joo. Everyone’s moving. We’re moving into a dorm and we have room for another person and you can move in with us, too!” Her three best friends said excitedly.

Eunjoo warily glanced at them. For some reason, they’d suddenly changed this year, and Eunjoo didn’t think it was a good change. They’d started to try and fit in with the “cool kids” and Eunjoo really didn’t care.

The four of them had been good friends since elementary school and Eunjoo felt that she was the only one who hadn’t changed her personality.

Of course, she could be wrong.

“Ok! I’ll ask my mom!” Eunjoo put on a smile and waved as she ran home, dropping the smile and rolling her eyes.

What’s so bad about the Min district, anyway?

Eunjoo sighed as she plugged in her earphones and played her music. She was sitting at the edge with her legs swinging on what she liked to call the tunnel of light, for in the mornings, the first rays of sunlight were revealed through the leaves of the trees next to the abandoned tunnel, creating a beautiful pattern. The tunnel was blocked off for cars and almost no one came this way anyway, so Eunjoo didn't have to worry about much.

It was 7:20 the last time she checked and the sun was starting to set. She was wearing her favourite comfy outfit, an oversized kangaroo hoodie and black leggings. The sweater was orange and had kangaroo ears attached to the hood of it.

She was listening to “Promise” by Exo, the group of gods at the next door planet, Exoplanet. To be really honest, she wished she lived in Exoplanet rather than Bangtan planet, just for the gods. She was what they call a “fangirl” of Exo and was often scolded by her mom going on her phone so much and looking at Exo. She didn’t really care for her own gods, but appreciated that because of them, she felt safe. She knew her friends liked BTS, and they knew she liked Exo. They respected each other and that was that.

Closing her eyes, Eunjoo sighed once again. Suddenly, her eyes popped open as the smell of cigarettes hit her nose.

Instinctively, Eunjoo covered and nose with the sleeve of her sweater.  A man with a hood covering his face with a cigarette between his teeth was sitting next to her. Although his hood was covering his face, she could see strands of pastel pink hair sticking out of the hood.

Eunjoo’s heart started pounding. What did this man want from her?

“Hey, kiddo, what are you doing out so late?” The mysterious man asked.

His voice was a bit high pitched yet a bit rough.

Are you kidding me?!  Eunjoo thought with a panicked look on her face. Why is he talking to me?! And doesn’t he know secondhand smoking is dangerous?

She blinked. Then blinked again.

Taking the cigarette out of his mouth with one hand and pinching his hood to hide his lower face with the other, the man looked at her.

When they made eye contact, Eunjoo noticed that his eyes were pretty. He had monolids but his eyes were charismatic, and his irises told so many emotions and looked like they’d seen so much that Eunjoo couldn’t look away.

His pink hair was covering his eyebrows and it matched his pale skin so well that it was almost as if he was born with it.

The stranger’s eyes slowly fell to Eunjoo’s sleeve. He then frowned a bit then looked at his cigarette.

Laughing awkwardly, he threw it off of the edge of the tunnel and popped a mint in his mouth.

“Haha, there you go!”

Eunjoo’s eyes widened even more. “Li… littering…”

“Shoot.”

The silence was awkward, and neither Eunjoo nor the stranger was comfortable. They were looking at the place the stranger had thrown his cigarette in silence. All of the Min district’s residents knew that littering was a very taboo thing in their region and tried to stay as environmentally helpful as possible. Of course, there were some exceptions, an example being this stranger.

They sat there in full silence for a while, then Eunjoo started laughing. Hard. The stranger stared at her in confusion, his eyes curious.

Once Eunjoo calmed down, she sighed happily, turning to the stranger. Her eyes widened in surprise.

“Oh, you decided to show your face now, huh, Mr. Litterer?” She smirked.

They stranger squinted at her, still confused, then fell back in surprise as he realised that he showed his face.

“Woah! Are you alright? Why are you so shocked about you showing your face? It’s not like you have a disgusting face or anything. Although I’m surprised this is true since you are smoking, after all.” Eunjoo said to herself.

The stranger, apparently not hearing her, finally calmed down and sighed as he sat back up next to Eunjoo.

“You’re not… going to say anything to anyone, right?” He sounded nervous.

Eunjoo glanced at him, scanning his features.

Now that she could see his full face, she could tell that he was definitely not a normal Joe.

His face was pale, but he had pink splashed onto his cheeks, mostly from the surprise he just had. She could also see his eyes much better, and she observed that his eyes slightly curved down, resembling a puppy’s. Once again, he had monolids, but that only made him more attractive because in this day and age, everyone had large, manga-esque eyes. Eunjoo, herself, didn’t have very large eyes but she had slightly doubled eyelids, which were passed through genetics, just like most other Armys, so it was a rare sight to see a mono lidded person. Since the treaty of 2976, all cosmetic surgeries except for medical use was banned. He had - wait - 5 piercings, which was a lot. She honestly couldn’t tell how old he was, as he had youthful looks but his aura made him feel older - no, wiser.

The corners of Eunjoo’s mouth curled up and her eyes formed crescent moons. “Tell anyone what? That a stranger with pink hair littered? Don’t worry; I’m not a tattletale. Besides, I probably won’t see you ever again.”

The stranger looked confused for a second, then sighed with a smile. He ruffled Eunjoo’s hair and laughed. “Thanks, kiddo. Now, go home. It’s getting dark.”

Eunjoo bowed and turned to walk home, when she heard the man speak another time.

“And what makes you think we won’t see each other again?”

Eunjoo spun around to reply, but there was nothing there.

“What… even?”
