Chapter 2 - Floor Meeting

Smoke and Mirrors

Seokjin was trying harder than he would have liked to admit to get the best grades he could. He wanted to be able to say he was top of the class, wanted to say that he was doing well.

The first time he failed a quiz, Seokjin realized that maybe he needed to rethink his study methods.

Sighing into his hands, Seokjin balanced his laptop on his crossed legs on the couch as he let his head loll back against the cushion. As he exhaled he let his hands slide down his face, resting over his mouth for a moment before he looked back at the computer screen and frowned.

“I can’t believe I failed. I thought I was doing so well,” he mumbled to himself, barely even blinking when he heard the telltale click of Yoongi’s door opening. The other student sidled in, bowl of cereal in one hand and spoon still in his mouth as he leaned against the wall by the couch. Seokjin didn’t even look up.

“You sound like you’re overthinking ,” he said, Seokjin’s gaze flattening at the screen before he shrugged. There was a pause, Yoongi twirling the spoon between his fingers as Seokjin scrolled through some of the questions that he’d been looking over. He’d even loaded them into another program while he was working so he could keep his work organized. “Was this what your quiz was on?” he asked, Seokjin nodding as Yoongi took another bite of cereal.

“Yeah,” Seokjin replied, cocking his head as he looked at a problem. “I thought I was going to ace it, but I did awful and I don’t know why.”

There was another silence between the two of them, Seokjin about to open his mouth when Yoongi spoke instead.

“You did this step out of order and it ed up all the rest of your calculations,” he said, Seokjin watching as Yoongi pointed out the apparently problematic math and continued. “The right answer is zero. Check it.” Blinking, Seokjin looked from the screen to Yoongi, eyes narrowed.

“I don’t believe you,” he replied, voice cautious. Yoongi just looked at him, shrugging and taking another bite of cereal.

“Just check it,” Yoongi repeated, mouth half full of food as Seokjin stared at him for another minute. Then he turned back to the screen, reversing the math that Yoongi had mentioned and working it out until he was done. Sure enough, the answer was zero, and that left Seokjin staring at the screen.

He’d figured out how Seokjin had messed up so quickly.

“How did you…?” he started, Yoongi chuckling to himself as he swallowed the bit of cereal.

“I’m kinda okay at math,” he replied, about to walk away when he paused and tossed a half balled sheet of paper into Seokjin’s lap. “I almost forgot. We have to go to some stupid floor meeting or some . It was on our door this morning.” Seokjin was still staring at the screen, blinking away from it as he turned his attention down to the paper on his lap.

“Floor meeting?”

“I don’t ing know,” Yoongi replied, pouring the milk and what was left of his cereal down the drain. “It’s bull. But Hoseok’ll probably be there. If we disappear halfway through, you know where we’ll be.” Seokjin looked up at him, Yoongi grinning cheesily before he winked and laughed. Seokjin could only roll his eyes.

“How’d you get so good at math?” Seokjin asked, trying his best to change the subject. Yoongi raised a brow, shrugging and shooting Seokjin a befuddled expression.

“I don’t ing know?” he replied, clear questioning in his tone. “It’s ing math? It’s not that hard.” Seokjin had started typing as Yoongi replied and he just shrugged, Yoongi watching him before he continued. “You need to chill out. Take a nap. Smoke something. Get laid. Take a ing break. Like I said,” Yoongi said, patting Seokjin’s shoulder, “I’m here for you. Just let me know.” Seokjin looked up just in time to catch the wink and he actually laughed, though he shook his head and looked back at the computer. “Whatever. Just wake me up when it’s time for the meeting thing,” he finished, Seokjin hearing his door click a moment later.

For the rest of the day until the meeting that they had to attend, Seokjin went through his math work and tried to fix the problem. After looking at them, he realized that he’d been making the same problem all along and, thanks to Yoongi, he now knew exactly what he needed to fix. He went through, checking his answers as he went and feeling quite a bit better about himself in the end.

When he was done Seokjin stood, stretching and rolling his shoulders before walking into the kitchen. He glanced at the clock, humming in thought before shrugging and simply grabbing an apple from the fridge - if he hadn’t gone shopping, the fridge would still be stocked with mostly energy drinks and sweets. As he walked to his room to change, he banged on Yoongi’s door, hoping to wake him up without much of a problem. Then Seokjin continued on to his own room, changing into jeans instead of his sweatpants and attempting to fix his hair at least a bit. Instead he just messed it up a bit, not really caring how great it looked considering they were just going to be going down the hall to sit somewhere for a while. As Seokjin walked back to the living room he couldn’t help but pause in front of Yoongi’s door, staring at it for a few moments before leaning with his ear against the door.

It didn’t sound like Yoongi had moved.

Seokjin inwardly groaned, leaning his forehead against the door. He was sure this wasn’t going to be fun, but Yoongi had asked Seokjin to wake him up and he’d feel bad if he just left Yoongi sleeping.

So he cracked open the door, immediately recoiling at the feel of the room but stepping in anyway. Glancing around, he realized that he’d been right - Yoongi hadn’t moved at all, and to make matters worse he’d fallen asleep with his headphones on. Lips pursed, Seokjin stepped close, first attempting to nudge Yoongi’s shoulder without much success. Yoongi just grimaced, fidgeting a bit and curling up tighter. Seokjin stared at him for a moment, almost smiling at how the other man was curled up on his side in a little ball - it made him look smaller than he already was, and Seokjin couldn’t help himself. He stayed silent for another moment, trying to come up with a plan to wake him up but mostly failing. Instead Seokjin did the next thing that came to mind.

He reached down and pulled one of Yoongi’s headphones off of his ear.

That movement was met with Yoongi turning over and trying to push Seokjin away as hard as he could, Seokjin losing his balance and hold on the headphone as it snapped back hard onto Yoongi’s ear and Seokjin stumbled back. That jerked Yoongi fully awake, and he yelped a bit when the plastic hit his ear, sitting up and pulling the headphones off of his head. They were still blasting music and Seokjin stared at them, Yoongi looking at Seokjin and clearly waiting for an explanation.

“I banged on the door and then tried to nudge you awake and it didn’t work, so… How can you sleep with that blaring like that?” he finished, Yoongi glancing to his ipod and shrugging.

“It relaxes me.” That was the only explanation that Seokjin received so he had no choice but to accept it, Yoongi rolling out of his bed a moment later and not even bothering to freshen up at all. “Let’s go to the thing.”

As the two of them walked down the hall they noticed that a lot of the group seemed to share their sentiment of how much they wanted to be there - they saw a lot of pajamas, sweatpants, and messy hair as the group of students settled in seats or on the floor. Seokjin caught sight of Hoseok almost immediately, the other man smiling at him happily and waving him over. Seokjin even alerted Yoongi to his presence, pulling his roommate over and sitting next to Hoseok on the floor. A shorter man next to Hoseok leaned forward and looked both Yoongi and Seokjin over, smiling as well.

“Yoongi, Seokjin - this is Jimin. He’s in the room across from me. We’ve been talking because our roommates ,” Hoseok said with a chuckle, Yoongi laughing tiredly and reaching across Hoseok to greet Jimin with a high five. “Jimin, this is Yoongi and Seokjin. They’re roommates down the hall. If you’re ever interested in… whatever,” Hoseok trailed off, shooting Jimin a significant glance and gesturing vaguely at Yoongi, who smirked as well.

“Hey,” Jimin greeted, voice a bit higher than Seokjin was expecting but nice nonetheless. Glancing at Hoseok, Jimin raised a brow. “What do you mean whatever?” he asked, Hoseok and Yoongi exchanging a glance before laughing. Once more, Yoongi reached over, hand resting high on Jimin’s thigh as he patted it. Seokjin watched Jimin look down and take in a quick breath before he looked back up at Yoongi and smiled.

“You’ll see,” Yoongi replied, Seokjin rolling his eyes as he forced himself to look away. A man had stood up on one of the chairs, clipboard in hand before he cleared his throat and pulled everyone’s attention.

“Welcome to the floor meeting, everyone,” he said, a bit excited for his own good but clearly trying to get everyone in the mood. Seokjin couldn’t help but grin. “My name’s Hyosang and I’m in charge of keeping all of you all following rules but… in a fun way. Yeah.” Hyosang flashed an easy peace sign before glancing down at his clipboard and tossing himself down on the chair he’d been standing on. “I’m not gonna make you introduce yourself or anything. That’s weird. But I wanted to get you all in the same place to go over some basic regulations and then let you free to roam around and talk to whoever.”

Seokjin heard Yoongi groan audibly beside him and then he heard a couple of chuckles, no doubt from Hoseok and Jimin. Mostly ignoring them, Seokjin kept his eyes on Hyosang, taking in everything from basic rules on cleanliness, random inspections, and checking out at the end of the year. Hyosang was really going over everything, and Seokjin was completely focused, trying to remember as much as he could. It was when he felt lips touching his ear that Seokjin stiffened, taking in a quick breath and not even pulling away from the suddenness of it.

“Hey, I’m going back to the room with Hobi and Jimin. Keep me informed, okay?” Yoongi mumbled, lips dragging on Seokjin’s ear to do nothing but make it easier to hear him but Seokjin still swallowed deeply, nodding and eventually simply leaning his head away. He didn’t need to look to know Yoongi was smiling as the three slipped off, leaving Seokjin with a group of people he didn’t know and Hyosang, who paid Yoongi, Hoseok, and Jimin no more than a passing glance as they walked off.

The rest of the meeting went by in a similarly boring fashion, Seokjin even zoning out before he heard Hyosang mention something about being finished and saw the people around him standing up. Seokjin blinked, standing as well and rolling his shoulders as he turned back to their dorm. Then he paused, instead walking up to Hyosang, who was putting everything into his bag.

“Hey,” Seokjin greeted a bit shyly. He held out his hand for a handshake but Hyosang just looked up at him and laughed before grabbing Seokjin’s hand to pull himself up to a standing position. He gave it a little shake but not much other than that, tossing his bag over his shoulder.

“What’s up?” he replied, Seokjin staring at him.

“I was just wondering… If we need you, how do we contact you? What room are you in?” Seokjin asked, Hyosang quirking a brow before smirking and very quickly looking Seokjin up and down. He pointed down the hall in the opposite direction from Seokjin’s room.

“I’m down that way. Room 329,” he remarked with a smirk. “You can visit any time.” The wink that Hyosang shot him was very obviously teasing and Seokjin laughed, Hyosang clapping his hand down on Seokjin’s shoulder with an easy grin. “Seriously. If I’m not in class I’m in my room because I have no life. So pop in if you need me,” he added, Seokjin smiling and nodding before Hyosang started to walk off toward his room. Seokjin did the same, key out and unlocking the door to the his room.

He was met with a happy exclamation from someone and the strong smell of weed that wasn’t being smoked in Yoongi’s room.

Coughing, Seokjin covered his mouth with one hand and closed the door as quickly as he could, looking to the three of them with narrowed eyes and shaking his head. Jimin was sitting on Hoseok’s lap, legs extended over Yoongi’s lap and smile so big his eyes were almost just slits. Hoseok was grinning at Seokjin as well, Yoongi looking to Seokjin with a relatively calm smirk.

“How was the meeting?” he asked, Seokjin looking at Yoongi and then changing his focus to Yoongi’s room.

“Look, I already don’t like that you smoke. At least do it in your room and not out here,” he replied, ignoring Yoongi’s question completely. Yoongi just looked at him for a second, seemingly thinking about his words before he looked to Jimin and Hoseok and shrugged. Seokjin watched the three of them get up and disappear into Yoongi’s room and once the door closed he walked over to the window, opening it to try to air the place out. Then he plopped down on the couch, staring at the still blank television screen before groaning and walking into his room instead.

Because he’d had the door closed the air in his room was at least a bit more fresh than it was in the other areas of the dorm. For that he was thankful, and Seokjin settled at his desk, pulling out a book and reading absently as he leaned back in his chair.

For a long while Seokjin just let himself read, focusing on what he needed to know for class. He was actually getting somewhere when he heard a knock on his door and he opened it, Yoongi slipping in with red eyes and mussed hair as he chuckled to himself and tossed himself onto Seokjin’s bed.

“Sure, you can lay on my bed,” Seokjin said, Yoongi still laughing before he turned to look at Seokjin.

“Sorry. I told Hobi and Jimin they could have my room for a bit. Jimin’s never smoked before so… It’s pretty ing funny. But Hobi wanted to take care of him, so…” Yoongi shrugged as best he could while lying down.

“I’m scared to ask what you mean by that,” Seokjin mumbled in reply, Yoongi not even letting a breath pass before he responded.

“They’re ing. So I gave them my room.” Seokjin groaned and rolled his eyes, forehead resting on his desk as Yoongi continued. “I would have gone to the living room but that’s boring and bugging you is more fun.” Yoongi looked over a paper he found, deeming it trash, then balled it up and started tossing it up into the air and catching it.

“Even when I’m trying to study?”

“That makes it more fun.”

There was a pause, Seokjin letting out a loud sigh and not even bothering to lift his head as Yoongi smirked behind him on the bed. In the background Seokjin could hear the soft sound of muffled groans and he sighed, even picking up his forehead and dropping it back against the desk a few times. Yoongi watched in silence, even still the tossing of his makeshift ball as Seokjin stilled.

Yoongi pursed his lips.

“Want me to your or something?”

Seokjin immediately sat up and looked at Yoongi with furrowed brows and wide eyes. He shook his head.

“No. What? No,” he replied, Yoongi laughing to himself as he tossed the paper ball once more as he looked up at the ceiling. “Why would you even ask that?”

“Because you seem stressed and I am nothing if not good at relieving stress,” he responded in a lazy drawl, his lips absently as Seokjin continued to stare. “You can say no, it’s okay. But the offer’s there,” he added, laughing to himself. Seokjin continued to shake his head, Yoongi glancing at him before he tossed the paper ball at Seokjin’s face. He missed but Seokjin moved out of the way anyway, a little smile perking the corners of his lips as Yoongi pushed himself up off the bed. He paused for a second, leaning up against the wall that connected between Seokjin’s room and his own. “I don’t want to interrupt them.”

Seokjin watched as Yoongi focused up on the ceiling as he listened, Seokjin looking at Yoongi and still smiling a bit. He couldn’t help it - Yoongi tended to be a handful, but he was considerate most of the time.

Even if his idea of being considerate was offering Seokjin a .

Sighing, Yoongi pulled away from the wall, running his hand through his hair and mussing it up as he made his way to the door.

“I’m gonna go play some video games or something. You’re welcome to join me if you want,” he offered, Seokjin just shaking his head.

“It’s fine. I’m gonna finish the studying you interrupted me from,” he replied, Yoongi just grinning and shrugging.

“Suit yourself.”

With that, Yoongi opened the door, walking out into the hallway as Seokjin watched on.

“Don’t smoke in the living room anymore,” he called out after him, Yoongi shooting him a thumbs up as the door closed. Seokjin grinned.

Yoongi might not have been his ideal roommate, but he was a nice guy. It was just going to take Seokjin some time to get used to it.

Maybe this year wouldn’t be as long as Seokjin had originally thought.
