The Little, Significant Things About You
And just when you thought you found love...Not only is the Gossip Magazine business dirty, it’s also cut-throat. Everyone in it is, in one way or another, close to being crooks. Its photographers and writers are skilled stalkers and con artists; add the fact that their works are also libelous most of the time. Its editors and publishers are a different story. They’re the mafia bosses. They do anything to get what they want whether it’s through cheating, lying, deceiving and even threatening and blackmailing.
Go Soo Eun is one of them. She’s the editor-in-chief of the infamous Scandalous Magazine, a magazine known for getting the dirt on any and every artist there is. And it’s not merely “dirt” they get. The magazine lives up to its name of being scandalous. It has released pictures and articles ranging from extreme plastic surgeries and artists’ forbidden relationships to scandals, ion and even murder. Go Soo Eun managed to get them all. And she didn’t get them by being nice. Everybody in the industry knew Soo Eun never played fair. That is why she is feared by every entertainment and every artist there is.
And even more so by her writers.
Stephanie Ahn could almost feel her feet trembling under her as she waited for her boss to react at what she just presented. She had been undercover as a make-up artist at SM Entertainment for more than a month now but her assignment proved to be difficult. Dong Bang Shin Ki’s leader U-know Yunho seemed to be the first big artist to have no skeletons in his closet.
“Is this all?” Soo Eun’s deep voice resonated annoyance. She threw the folder down her desk and stared up at Stephanie, her eyebrows raised threateningly. “A few pictures of him with various girls?”
“Y-Yes, sajangnim.” The writer stammered. Stephanie had prepared herself for this. She knew what she had wasn’t enough but she had to show something in the very least. But now that she was in front of her very intimidating boss, her nervousness got the best of her. “I-I’m sorry. I already looked in every nook and cranny of their apartment but there was nothing there incriminating for Jung Yunho. I did, however, find things for the other members: Changmin-ah’s and toys collection, his and Jaejoong-ah’s nose jobs, proof of Yoochun-ah and Junsu-yah’s relationship and—”
“I don’t care about any of those.” Soo Eun said straightforwardly.
Stephanie almost stopped breathing. Her boss’s voice was scary but the look in Soo Eun’s eyes was neither angry nor annoyed. Stephanie was a little thankful for the latter.
“I told you before, we already have dirt on the four other members. Changmin even had a little ‘fling’ with one of our writers—or, should I say, his fan—after their Mirotic Tour Concert and we have exclusive pictures of that. What we really need is dirt on the leader. To be honest, a few others tried to get dirt on him too before you did. They were all unsuccessful. Then again, they didn’t really spy on him as much as you did.” Soo Eun smirked at her. “Just try again, Stephanie dear, but only for a month more. Be creative.”
Soo Eun motioned for her towards the door and Stephanie took her cue. After she went out of the editor-in-chief’s office, she finally released the breath she was holding. The meeting had gone quite well, considering that her usually angry boss was in a good mood but it still made Stephanie uneasy. Her job was getting tiring but it still wasn’t done yet. She still had a long way to go, it seemed.
When Stephanie Ahn got into this business she had a clue what was coming for her. She had already done a few undercover works before but they weren’t as stressful and as long as this one (her next longest one only lasted for three days). Being the sweet and innocent make-up artist Kim Sun Hee was the most difficult thing she had ever done. Not only did she set up a not-so-fake name (she accidentally wrote her real Korean first name when she applied for the make-up artist job) and another apartment, she also took on a new, actual identity. It was hard balancing two lives, not to mention that she had to always be distant to anyone and everyone besides her target in her second life, and Stephanie didn’t know how much more she could take it.
The ringing of her phone woke her up from her daze. Stephanie slowly took it out of her pocket and answered it.
“Yobeoseyo?”
“Sun Hee-yah?” The unexpected sound of Yunho’s voice made her heart suddenly skip a beat for some reason. But Stephanie chose to ignore it anyway.
“Y-Yunho-yah,” She muttered, scrambling to get away to someplace quieter. She headed towards the fire exit and went out. “Y-you called, why?” Stephanie wanted to slap herself silly as to why she’s suddenly acting nervous at this one little phone call. Since when did she act nervous around Yunho anyway? She remembered being cool and composed when she first met her target but now… Stephanie merely shook her head, deciding that her nervousness was only the after effect of the talk she had with her boss.
“Erm, nothing, really. I just… I just wanted to know if you’re busy tonight.”
“Oh, I… I’m not. How about you? Don’t you have anything scheduled for tonight?”
“We have the night off so… I was wondering if I could pick you up and we could go to somewhere and have, you know, dinner?”
The corners of Stephanie’s lips tugged upwards without her realizing it. For a second, she forgot that she had a job to do as she nodded her head and answered. “Uh, sure. That sounds fun.”
“Great.” Yunho said happily from the other line. “I’ll pick you up at your apartment around 7? See you then?”
“Yeah. I’ll see you.”
Stephanie still had a wide grin playing on her lips even after she hung up.
•••
Yunho couldn’t keep his eyes off of her. It was addicting. He secretly loved how her hair gently sways with the breeze, how her eyes sparkled when she smiled, how her cheeks go pink every time she giggles and how her lips move gracefully when she utters his name (she finally managed to say it without the use of honorifics, to the singer’s delight). Yunho couldn’t help but notice the little yet significant things. And he wondered was he starting to fall for her?
“Yunho-yah?” Sun Hee said, moving her hand up and down in front of Yunho. The latter suddenly realized that she had noticed him going quiet. Yunho looked up at her and smiled.
“Sorry, I was thinking about something.”
“I figured.” Sun Hee said before looking up at the sky again.
They were in a park almost outside of the city. Not many people go here, not as many as the people in the parks of the city proper anyway. It was the perfect place for them.
“Wah! There are so many stars tonight!” Sun Hee smiled like a little child. The act made Yunho’s heart thump a beat or two quicker than normal.
“Yah, why are you looking at those tiny stars when you have a really huge and good-looking star sitting right next to you?” Yunho joked.
“Good looking? I begged to differ. I’d rather look at the sparkling stars up above than at the pompous star next to me.” She said, staring at Yunho and raising her eyebrow for a second then looking back at the sky again.
Yunho pouted. “Yah, I was only kidding.”
Sun Hee grinned. “I know.”
“They sky looks beautiful tonight, huh?” But not as beautiful as you, Yunho said in his thoughts.
“Uh-huh. It should always be like this.” She whispered.
He couldn’t agree more. Yunho leaned back against the bench. His hand moved a few inches to his right, accidentally moving towards Sun Hee’s own hand. The slight touch startled both of them and Sun Hee almost jumped up if she hadn’t stopped herself. Yunho just moved his hand a centimeter away from hers. They both looked at their hands then at each other. Yunho didn’t miss the adorable shade of red that crossed Sun Hee’s face when their gazes met. The moment lasted for only less than a minute as Sun Hee then turned away, muttering a hurried “Sorry” even if she didn’t do anything wrong. She could swear that her heart was beating so fast that it was like she just ran a marathon. Her uneasiness didn’t go unnoticed by Yunho.
“Sun Hee-yah, are you okay?” He asked, moving an inch closer towards her.
She turned and smiled sheepishly. “Er, yeah. I’m just… a little out of breath.” She whispered and Yunho didn’t quite hear it. He raised his hand and rested it on her cheek. He wasn’t quite sure what he was doing but something inside him was driving him to do it. Sun Hee merely stared at him, blinking and secretly enjoying the feel of his palm against her cheek.
It wasn’t a moment later that Yunho closed the gap between them. At the instant when their lips met, it was then that he knew. Yunho had fallen deeply and madly in love with her.
