My Patch of the Sky

“I can't figure out if you are an angel from heaven to reward me, or a devil from hell to tempt me.”

When I got back to the apartment, it was a huge mess. It turns out grandma tried to kill herself. Who would’ve thought that grandma, GRANDMA, of all people would attempt such thing! Father was worried about her and we ended up taking turns watching her, just in case she’d do something extreme.

A week’s passed and we got a hold of grandpa’s will and the burial was successful. We’re still unsure of leaving grandma alone and by herself.
Right now, my father’s lounging in the living room with newspapers strewn all over the floor. “Appa, what’re all of those for?” I asked. “Well it looks like we won’t be going back home any time soon, so I decided to look for a job...” he mumbled. “What about our house? And your old job!” “Ah, that’s already been taken care of. I rang up my good friend and asked if he could watch our place for a while. And fishing isn’t really a job, is it? I’m sure Bahk ahjussi will still be in good business without me.” “And school?” He blinked. “I haven’t really thought about that...” he murmured. “Ahh, well let’s talk about this later, alright pumpkin?” he smiled. “If you say so...” I mumbled, readying a cup of tea.
It’s not that I hate Seoul. I’m just afraid of change... sort of.

Father found a job as a salesman at Smart Shopping and nagged grandma to quit her job. He sold the house to his friend (the money was wired to our bank account). And I? I just slept in and did the chores that needed to be done. I’d occasionally think of the cute librarian but I shook him out of my thoughts. I took the liberty of looking up a local school. I found the perfect one. It was close by to our home and their academic statistics were okay. I called them and my dad picked up a student transfer application. It’ll take a while since my old school will have to transfer my records and I still have to take a district test so they’ll know where to place me.
