My Patch of the Sky

“It’s the same as always. He doesn’t pursue
those who leave, and ignores those who come.”

Father put the phone down and sighed in exasperation, rubbing his temples. “What is it, appa?” He looked up from the table and faced me with a grim face. “Your grandfather died.” I gasped. It’s not like I was particularly infatuated with the man. In fact, it was kind of awkward between us, being that he isn’t my real grandfather. My real grandfather died of lung cancer when I was merely 4 years old.
I looked down at my feet, “Oh,” It was silent. “GiBbeum, I’m going to have to leave the village for a while. There’s paperwork to fill out, a burial to plan, and I have to comfort your grandmother.” “Ah... okay.” I mumbled. “Will I be coming, too?” I asked curiously. “Mm... I don’t see why not. You’ll be attending the funeral anyways and it won’t be long. You’re also very good with your studies, I’m sure you’ll be alright. Your grandmother will probably appreciate you comforting her more than I.” I gave it some thought and decided that it wouldn’t hurt to go, “Alright then. When do we leave?” He gave me a small smile, “As soon as we can. It’ll take a while to arrange everything being that there isn’t an airport, nor a station nearby.” Seoul. I haven’t been there in a long time. “Don’t worry, princess. Everything will be okay.” I gave a weak smile, “You’re probably right.” I gave him a peck on the cheek and walked to my room. “Good night,” As I closed the door, I heard him say, “Sweet dreams,”
I lied on my bed, just thinking. ‘I wonder if the stars will be just as bright in the city.’

Days passed and it was finally the day we departed for Seoul. I woke up extra early to cook a nice breakfast and wrapped up a hearty lunch for our trip. Eggs with rice for breakfast and fried rice for lunch. I snuck in two rolls of kimbap just in case either of us got a little hungry on the way. It turns out he woke up a little too late and had to rush out without eating breakfast. I sighed, getting my bags.
