My Patch of the Sky

“What’s this key for?”
“My heart, of course.”

When we arrived we immediately went to look for grandmother’s apartment. I was worried about her. She was already so old and lived a hard lifestyle, working as a cook in a second-rate restaurant, and now widowed. Twice.
When we got in front of the apartment the residents wouldn’t let us in. I guess they were cautious of us. It was alright since we were buzzed in. When we got to her apartment room, what I saw was worried me. Grandmother looked unwell. Which is sort of impossible since she’s the healthiest person I know. I immediately rushed to her once she opened the door all the way. She pushed me away saying, “It’s not like I’m some weak old woman,” I blinked. “Well you know what I mean.” My father coughed, averting all attention to him. “Hey mom,” he said awkwardly. He never approved of her remarrying. No one did. “Jae.” she said in acknowledgment. With that, it got much more awkward than it already was. “Well why are you all dilly dallying? Come in,” she said.

To be honest, there was no actual point in me coming to Seoul. Grandma seemed alright, father was handling things well, and I just felt like a nuisance. Was I bothering everyone? With that thought, I grabbed my scarf and left for a walk. I left a note so they won’t worry about me.

It was a good 2 o’ clock when I left. I practically just walked around mindlessly. I eventually found a library. It had a huge glass frame on the side with a nice view of the scenery outside. I quickly scrambled in there, grabbing a random book and sat on a chair near that frame, just looking out at the sky. I can literally do this all day and be fine. My eyes grew heavy and I guess along the way I just fell asleep.

“Miss... miss!” I was shook awake by what looks to be a librarian. And a very handsome one at that. Figuring that this was just a dream I carelessly mumbled, “Are you my prince charming?” Before he could say anymore, I fell back asleep.

I was shook awake, yet again by the handsome librarian. I rubbed my eyes, trying to adjust to the sudden change of light. The man looked down at me (with those gorgeous eyes of his). I stared right back. He picked something up from my lap. Studying it carefully, he looked back at me with an amused smile and a cocked eyebrow. “‘All About The Moose’?” he questioned. I looked up in confusion, and realized it was the book I was supposedly reading. I blushed, grabbing it. “They’re really majestic,” I defended quietly. I looked behind him and saw it was dark. I whipped my head up at him. “Do you know what time it is?” He glanced at his watch, “It’s about ten minutes to twelve.” I panicked. With eyes wide, I gathered my stuff, which wasn’t much, and quickly ran out the door, thanking him.
I ran down the block until I realized that I didn’t know where I was going. I ran back into the library in embarrassment. Trudging my feet on the carpeted floor, I looked down at my feet and asked the librarian, “Uhh... might you have a clue on how to get to Bucheon Apartments from here?” He gave a light chuckle. “No, but you could take a taxi from here.” I turned red. “Thanks... again,” I mumbled, running out.
Once I was out, I fished through my pant pockets to see if I had any money for a taxi home. I had a good 20 won, but that was it. I quickly hailed a taxi and went home.
