Your POV

I finished giving the presentation of the layout I had planned to revamp the restaurant and gave comparisons with food marts and other restaurants in the area and in Korea in general. To me it all seemed in favour of the restaurant but I could still see skeptical looks from the judges. 

When I took a pause to let them assess what I'm proposing, one judge said, "I understand your business research on this and its fine but I do have a question." Pause.

'Oh dear......'

My heart starts to beat like crazy again.

'Now what could he possibly ask?'

"My question stems from your claim that the sushi restaurant is a better project than a food mart. How do you propose it is? What I mean is what is the USP of this restaurant?" 

I took a deep breath. Atleast he isn't rubbishing the idea, he's giving me a chance, a chance I intend to fully utilize.

"I was coming to that. Let me explain by asking you a question. What is it that you consider precious, that you would never want to lose even if its old and worn? ...Other than your phone, wallet and laptop I mean." I smiled trying to lighten up the mood a little.

The judge who had asked smiled at the question and after a while thinking said, "My old school jacket. It's a little old and faded."

I smiled at him, acknowledging his response and looked at the judge to his left and asked, "And what about you?"

He seemed a bit hesitant before he said, "My son's basketball jersey. He died last year in a car accident."

I was touched to hear him share that. One by one the others too shared their precious things. 

"Now let me ask you why do you hold them so dear?"

They all looked very uncomfortable to answer even though they knew the reason.

"Because they hold memories with them." I answered for them. "Some happy and some sad but still we're unable to let go. You asked me what is unique about the sushi restaurant, well this is my answer. Memories. The restaurant has been there for the last 15 years. It has created memories from all the customers who have entered through its doors. A new and shining establishment cannot compete or create the nostalgia it holds for those who are regulars there or even have eaten only once. Even if a reputed company starts a new branch or business it'll still take time for it to gain reputation and business. Therefore I request you to invest in the reputation build up with the years rather than start on a blank sheet."

I took a deep breath and waited for their response. Silence. Now I was getting worried. 

"We've heard what you had to say. Please take your seat. We'll discuss and reveal the results in a short while." said the judge in the middle.

I nodded to show I understood and went back to my seat. I was too nervous to utter anything coherent. Now all I could do was wait and pray it all worked out.
