Toes by Lights For: SweetSyndrome
Han Ji-Min rushed down the street swinging her purse, as she nearly danced along in the wake of the happy vibe that she got when she listened to her iPod. The song was upbeat and made her feel alive.
Something she needed right then. She was headed to her free hug’s event. Her friend Ki-Bum had organized a big event in the middle of Hyochang Park and she picked the one thing she loved most. Hugging!
The day was bright and sunny, adding to the great feeling she was getting. A slight breeze blew in from the west and played with the ends of her hair. She spun around and skipped along, passing people who smiled from her infectious happiness.
Her pink floral dress flirted with the wind and her brown suede boots made a merry beat upon pavement. She crossed the street with the signal and entered the park, breathing deeply of the fresh air around her. She could hear children giggling and dogs barking in the distance as she took out her ear buds.
She looked up into the dancing emerald green of the leaves above her, smiling at the sparkling of sunlight that filtered through as she walked along.
“Yah, Ji-Min ah I was wondering if you were going to show up!”
Ji-Min turned and spotted Ki-Bum and waved with a bright smile. She skipped over to him and grabbed his arm.
“Pabo~ I would never miss this!” She said with a giggle.
Ki-Bum just smiled down at her in a brotherly way and placed the cardboard plaque over her head that read Free Hugs, in bright letters.
Ji-Min laughed and stood out in the center of all the events. She was immediately surrounded by dozens of people as they queued up for their turn. Bright laughter surrounded her and she was overjoyed.
After about an hour the crowd thinned out and Ji-Min got her first break. As she bent down to retrieve her bottle of water, and take a long drink, a strong wind blew buy and brought with it the best smell she had ever experienced. It was like sugar and spring all mixed into one.
She looked over and saw the most gorgeous guy standing with a group of kids, handing out cotton candy with a bright smile.
Ji-Min felt go dry as he looked up and caught her gaze. He smiled and she was blown away.
She knew was hanging open but she couldn’t seem to move. His hair was haloed in the bright sunlight and she could see the twinkle in his eye even from where she stood. She shook herself and looked away only to look back only seconds later. He was back to making the sweet treat for a few young girls now, who were all giggling while watching him adoringly.
Ji-Min’s brow wrinkled but she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. She strained her ears to listen closely for his voice, hoping to find out if it sounded as sweet as he looked. She wound up standing on her tippy toes as she leaned a bit forward.
Suddenly she felt a pull on her dress and looked down to see a cute little boy with sticky fingers looking up at her with wide eyes.
“Do you really hug people?” He asked and she melted.
A smile bloomed over her face. “Of course! Would you like one?”
The little boy blushed and nodded and she giggled, but leaned down and gave him one of her best hugs.
The little boy broke away and ran off before stopping and waving at her. She waved back and watched him disappear into the crowd. Ji-Min stood up, looking back over to the cotton candy booth. She felt immediate disappointment when she saw the guy had been replaced by an older woman.
She swiveled her head around looking for him, but he was gone.
She sighed but didn’t let it get her down. She smiled again and called out for free hugs.
Her bright personality drew many people to her, but she was always keeping her eyes peeled for that one face in the crowd.
At the end of the day, when everyone was packing up ready to head home, Ji-Min took off her plaque board and handed it back to Ki-Bum.
“It was a good day huh?” He asked riffling her hair.
“Oppa!” she growled at him before smiling again. “Neh, it was a very good day. I didn’t expect so many people. You are awesome!”
“Of course, I am Kim Ki-Bum after all.”
Ji-Min laughed and swatted his arm playfully. “You’re also an arrogant jerk!”
“Aww, but you love me!” Ki-Bum laughed.
“Well I have to; you are my cousin after all!” They laughed together and Ji-Min waved as she began walking from the park to go home.
As she walked she got the feeling she wasn’t alone and she started walking faster. Just as she made it to the entrance of the park a voice called out to her.
“Hey are you still offering free hugs?”
Ji-Min stopped and turned around. There in the light of a street lamp, was the boy from earlier. He was smiling with his hands tucked into his jeans pockets as he strode up beside her.
“What?” She asked, shocked that he was there beside her, when she had just been thinking about him.
He grinned and she felt her knees go weak. Her heart fluttered as he withdrew his hand and picked hers up gently. He watched as their hands touched and as he lifted them, he looked up into her eyes.
Ji-Min felt the blush paint her face as her eyes stayed locked onto him. He smiled again and pulled her into his arms.
Her breath caught and he laughed into her hair.
“I know the free hug event has ended, but I couldn’t go without knowing what it felt like to be in your arms.” He said in a whisper.
Ji-Min felt chills rush over her and she hesitantly brought her arms up to sit around his waist.
He sighed and closed his eyes, relishing the feeling while a smile played upon his lips.
“If I asked you to go on a date with me, would you say no?”
Ji-Min shook her head and he took a step back, but kept his hands on her upper arms. They looked into each other’s eyes for a moment and he smiled a slanted smile that made his eyes dance in the yellow light above them.
“You know your smile captured my attention, I couldn’t take my eyes off you.” He said. “When I saw you with that little boy, I thought you’d be a great mother someday.”
Ji-Min blushed and looked at the ground.
He let go of her arm and, placing a finger under her chin, he lifted her head up so their eyes met once more. She smiled sweetly at him.
“Why are you so cute?” He asked and she laughed.
“Just lucky I guess.” She said sassily.
He grinned and leaned in. The kiss was sweet and brief, but when he pulled back Ji-Min was standing on her toes again, leaning in to him.
“I’m the lucky one.” He said as he slipped his arm around her shoulders.
“Come on and I’ll walk you home.”
"Hey, so what's your name anyway?" Ji-Min asked suddenly. He looked at her, then threw his head back and laughed as they walked off into the night.
