Prompt: Fortune Cookies

Additional Member: Shindong

“Ryeowook ah.” The eternal maknae turned around in search for the voice that called his name. He already knew who called him; Jongwoon’s voice was so unique that he could recognise it when the older male spoke. Ryeowook smiled, acknowledging the other male’s presence.

“Hi Jongwoon hyung” Jongwoon ran up to the other male, embracing him in a hug. “What do you want? You only hug me when you want something from me.” Jongwoon laughed, letting his arms relax.

“It is almost Chinese New Year, and I wanted to do something special.”

“And what is that?”

“I want to give all the members fortune cookies, and write the little fortunes myself, but I need you to make the actual biscuits for me.” Jongwoon pouted, giving the younger male the aegyo look, knowing that if he persevered, Ryeowook would eventually give in and agree to it.

“That is a really good idea hyung! Of course I will help you. I haven’t had much time to bake recently, so it will be a nice use of my time. But first, I need to go to the shops to get the ingredients. Do you want to come with me?” Jongwoon nodded eagerly, happy that he had managed to get Ryeowook to agree despite knowing that after a bit of encouragement, he would accept anyway.

As they walked to the shops just down the road of where they lived, they spoke of what Jongwoon’s intentions were regarding the fortune cookies.

“I was thinking about sending each member a fortune cookie with a fortune tailored to their personality. So for example, Siwon will have one relatively religious based, and Heechul will have one about his beauty. I am thinking about giving one to Shindong about losing weight, you know how he is and his extreme crash diet, it upsets me that he can’t see his true beauty.” Jongwoon explains, a smile stretched on his face. He had thought about doing this for many years, but he was always far too busy to do so, but now that he was not participating in Super Junior activities, he finally found the time to do it.

“That is a really nice idea hyung, everyone will really appreciate it. I think everyone has been lacking the self-confidence, especially now that Kris is threatening to leave EXO, it has brought up the time when Hangeng went to trial against the company.” Jongwoon hummed in response. He remembered it clearly when Hangeng told them of his decision to leave Super Junior and the outburst it caused. Leeteuk had a hard time controlling the younger members, and Heechul was distraught from the news and so Jongwoon decided to take the responsibility of the hyung and helped Leeteuk look after the younger members. It wasn’t really a memory he would have liked to have remembered, but it was all in the past now, and he had become stronger because of it.

The rest of the walk was silent as the topic of Hangeng’s decision to leave the band was still a touchy subject, even after many years after the event took place.

As they reached the destination, Ryeowook took Jongwoon’s hand, leading them to the baking section and picking out the necessary ingredients before taking him to the stationary area so that Jongwoon could get some paper and pens. It wasn’t as if they didn’t have pens or paper, it was more the fact that he was concerned with the state of the stationary, especially when it is within arm’s length with 12 childish men. Jongwoon chuckled at the vivid memory of when Kyuhyun and Eunhyuk decided to declare war on the upper floor and used the paper to send threatening notes to the other party. It took Jongwoon and Leeteuk over an hour to clean up various pieces of scrunched up paper whilst feeling extremely nervous after reading one particular message that Heechul wrote. They really considered sending the man to a mental hospital, only deciding not to after some persuasion, well it was more like blackmail.

Once they had paid, they began walking back to the dorm, deciding on how they were going to do the fortune cookies. Jongwoon wanted to keep the cookies anonymous, whilst Ryeowook was adamant on having the older man to sign his name on the back – it wasn’t like they wouldn’t be able to recognise his terrible handwriting anyway.

They got back, knowing for a fact that all the other members of Super Junior had gone off to do their various schedules. Eunhyuk was off at rehearsals preparing for his comeback with Donghae, whilst Kyuhyun, well he was probably in the dorm playing video games. Both Jongwoon and Ryeowook knew for a fact that Kyuhyun does not leave his bedroom when in the middle of video games; only pausing temporarily when he needed to go to the toilet. He even took various snacks and drinks to keep himself going.

Ryeowook quickly got to work, cracking the eggs and putting all the ingredients in the white mixing bowl. Jongwoon sat down at the counter next to where Ryeowook was busy preparing the food, getting out the plain white paper he had bought and began splitting the paper into the appropriate size.

Setting the pen against his head, he began to realise how difficult it was thinking of the right thing phrase for each member. Of course he didn’t want to offend anyone, but he also wanted to give them hope for the up and coming year.

An hour later, he had written most of the fortunes, and to be honest, he was pretty pleased with them. He didn’t let Ryeowook look at any of the fortunes that he wrote, because he wanted them to be a surprise, he decided against signing his name on the back because he wanted to remain anonymous, even though he knew that everyone would recognise his handwriting. And as he placed each fortune cookie into separate handmade boxes, he made a mental note of whose fortune cookie was whose.

“Jongwoon ah” Jongwoon turned to see Leeteuk standing behind him, a small piece of paper at hand. Jongwoon smiled, seeing the leader’s lips curling up from the message that had been received. “Did you do this?”

Jongwoon nodded.

“Thank you, it has really made my day. Being the leader of Super Junior is hard, and I don’t get a lot of appreciation from anyone, so it feels nice to been appreciated, even if it is just the once.” Leeteuk pats Jongwoon on the back, the piece of paper slipping out of Leeteuk’s grasp. Jongwoon bent down to pick it up, handing it back to the grateful older male.

All the effort you are making is really appreciated

“Hyung, what is this?” Kyuhyun asked, seeing the origami box on his bedside table.

“I don’t know, why don’t you open it and have a look?” Kyuhyun hummed in response, taking off the lid. Kyuhyun carefully bit the biscuit, letting it break before removing the piece of paper from within.

Jongwoon stared at Kyuhyun, who was busy reading the tiny slip of paper.

“Hyung, did you send this to the wrong person?”

“What?” Jongwoon asked, diving at the person in front of him to grab the piece of paper in the younger male’s hand.

You are beautiful the way you are, you don’t need to lose any more weight

“.” Jongwoon cried. “No, no, no! This can’t be true.” Without a second glance, he ran out of the bedroom, dashing to the kitchen where he had left Shindong’s fortune cookie. But it wasn’t there.

“. Shindong, where are you?” Jongwoon called, as he frantically searched around the dorm, knowing that Shindong had to still be around because he had only been in Kyuhyun’s room for 5 minutes maximum.

“Hyung, what’s wrong?” Shindong asked, walking from the bathroom whilst wiping his hands on his trousers.

“I made these fortune cookies, but I think I gave you the wrong fortune. Please can I have the fortune in your fortune cookie and then I give you the one you were supposed to have?”

“Well, I suppose so.” Shindong shrugged, taking a large bite at the biscuit. He removed the piece of paper from the biscuit, giving it to the older man, who swapped it with the one he had in his hand before running off back into the distance.

A small smile stretched on Shindong’s face as he read the piece of paper he was given.

Jongwoon dashed back to Kyuhyun’s room, ing the fortune into the younger male’s hand before stepping back to watch the maknae read the message. It took a good few seconds for Kyuhyun to process the message, having to reread it several times to understand what it was really saying.

A hand grabbed Jongwoon’s arm, the piece of paper falling to the ground and left forgotten on the floor, and he was thrown into Kyuhyun’s embrace, a soft but firm pair of lips pressing firmly on his own. Their lips mould against each other in a harsh competition for dominance, to which Jongwoon succumbed to as he lets his thoughts wonder as to how fortunate he was to have fallen in love with such a wonderful man.

We always believe our first love is our last, and our last love our first
