Fools in Love
Seeking for CertaintyEven before Jung Sooyeon became known as Jessica, Sehun already had a little crush on the designer so it wasn’t surprising that when he heard about the collaboration between the woman and his uncle, he decided to also go to the set. He went with his best clothes on, but then, with his premature height back then, the woman never treated him seriously. He was trying to make her swoon but then Jessica just laughed and ruffled his hair like a kid. Frustrated, Sehun walked away but his attention was caught by the sound of papers being torn. He searched for the source and then, he found a girl with long silky black hair and with porcelain skin. Her movements were precise and careful clearly elucidating classic femininity.
“What are you doing?” Sehun asked but when the girl heard his voice, she was startled causing the papers to fall down on the floor. Without second thoughts, Sehun helped her and that was when he realized that she was tearing the pages of a fashion magazine. He gave her the paper he gathered and the girl took it, hugged it close to her chest before bowing politely at the male. Then, Sehun repeated his question again, “What are you doing?”
“Paper flowers,” the girl answered. Her gaze fell down on the floor as she continued, “It’s my sister’s birthday tomorrow so I’m planning to give her a bouquet of paper flowers.”
Noticing that the girl hasn’t made any progress yet, he asked, “Do you need help?”
“Oh?” she asked back but as she finally understood his words, her gaze met his as she softly nodded.
Then, they found themselves on just one corner as the girl taught her how to fold paper flowers but as she did so, Sehun took the time to observe her features. Her eyes were the pretty kind of round; her lips were thin but showed a pinkish natural colour and her complexion was glowing. That afternoon then passed with them finishing the bouquet of paper flowers, and both of them admired the fruit of their labour.
“Thank you,” the girl mumbled as she beamed at him.
With the sweet smile that adorned the girl’s lips, Sehun found her beautiful.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Jung Soojung,” the girl answered.
Sehun and Soojung were fifteen when their friendship blossomed. Since then, Sehun always looked forward to Soojung’s vacation from school because it was only then that she would visit Jessica in America and it was only then that they could spend time together. Then, he started learning more about her such as how she likes singing and ballet, how she likes ice creams more than cakes, how she likes cats more than dogs, and how she likes a certain person named Kim Myungsoo.
That night when Soojung declared that it was no longer a crush but genuine love that she felt for Myungsoo, Sehun could only smile because he wanted to tell the same thing about Soojung.
Sehun loved how they acted like a couple when they are together but at the same time hated it because Soojung would remind him from time to time who really occupied her heart. They were lying on the rooftop with Soojung’s head on Sehun’s shoulder and her hands hugging his waist as they stargazed together.
“Sehunnie, am I pretty?” she suddenly asked.
“Inside and out,” he answered without hesitation.
“Are you saying that so that my feelings would not be hurt?” Soojung asked as she raised her head and looked at Sehun’s eyes to see if he was telling the truth.
Sehun smiled and confidently met her gaze as he answered, “No. You’re the most beautiful woman I know, Soojung.”
“Then, why can’t Myungsoo love me?”
Every time Soojung asks that question, Sehun’s heart would break into little pieces as the woman he loved search for the love of another. He turned so that they would be face to face and he asked her, “Soojung, am I handsome?”
“Oh?” she suddenly gasped. “Do you want me to answer honestly?”
“Of course,” Sehun chuckled.
“Hmm,” Soojung nodded with a smile on her lips.
Sehun beamed back but then the smile on his lips melted away as he asked, “Then, why can’t you love me?”
At the sudden confession, Soojung widened her eyes but didn’t stir away from their intimate position. Sehun took the risks and glossed his lips on hers but Soojung didn’t kiss him back.
“He’s just going to use you and your family’s money!” Sehun couldn’t help but shout at Soojung over the phone. He was so infuriated at the fact that the female agreed to the engagement and that he wouldn’t know if he hadn’t seen the news.
“I know,” Soojung muttered on the other line.
“And you’re just going to let him use you like that?!” Sehun yelled.
“Yes I will!” Soojung shouted back. “Because this is my only chance!”
When he suddenly heard short sobs over the phone, Sehun’s tensed body softened and his heart started aching at the sound of her cries.
“This is my only chance,” Soojung cried. “This is my only chance to make Myungsoo love me. I never won against Suzy, Sehun – only this time and I should make the best out of it.”
Then Soojung told her on how they agreed to divorce three years later and it just made him angrier but he could no longer bring himself to shout at the girl whose cries never stopped as she talked over the phone. It had always been like this. Their conversation would drift to how Soojung loved Myungsoo so much but he loved another girl and Sehun would be internally cursing because he wanted to be that guy who was the subject of Soojung’s love. He was cursing because he knew the kind of pain that unrequited love was bringing for Soojung.
He didn’t exactly know who Myungsoo and Suzy were but he hated them. Sehun hated them because they broke Soojung’s heart and they took away the innocence in her eyes and the sanity of her mind.
Sehun knew that despite the marriage, nothing still went well for Soojung. She never initiated the call since her marriage and Sehun thought that Soojung was probably ashamed of herself because she was foolish enough to let her husband have a mistress. However, from time to time, Sehun would call her and demanded to know how she was and even if she insisted she’s fine, her stories told the opposite. She was being cheated on but with her consent and Sehun’s loathe towards the two people he barely knew grew bigger and bigger.
When Soojung called him one night with her cries the ones who greeted him ‘hello’, he simply lost it all.
“I don’t know what to do anymore, Sehun,” she cried. “Help me. Please help me.”
“How would I help you, Soojung?” he asked with worried voice.
“Can… can you make his girl fall in love with you?” Soojung asked with a weak chuckle.
