Third month in Long Distance Relationship 

 

Baekhyun doesn’t remember how but they end up playing truth or dare. Okay, it’s more like truth or truth, because they don’t really have anything funny to do as a dare now.

Baekhyun, Luhan, Kyungsoo, Jongin and Suho somehow grouped together for their English project. But instead of doing the work, they decided to play around a little bit. That’s why now they sit in circle in Baekhyun’s carpet in his bedroom with a water bottle inside the circle.

“Okay, here are the rules. The loser is the one who gets the bottle cap faces him. Then the winners have the rights to ask the loser questions.” Suho starts.

“Wait, that’d be too much questions!” Luhan protests.

“Hmm, how about one question each person, good?”

Everybody nods in agreement.

Suho spins the water bottle around. They all wait in anticipation. Luhan gets it, he groans mockingly.

“How long have you been dating Sehun?” Baekhyun asks in wonder.

“What is the most intimate thing you’ve ever done with Sehun?” Suho asks. Everybody throws Suho a shock face.

“What do you like about Sehun?” Jongin asks.

They wait for Kyungsoo to ask but it never comes out, “Oh, I don’t really have anything I want to ask” The small boy shrugs.

 

Luhan takes a deep breath, ready to answer, “Well, I’ve been dating with Sehun for 35 months, next month will be our 3 years anniversary. Never on and off. And Suho you little , your question is too vulgar but sorry for getting your imagination too high. I haven’t really done anything intimate with Sehun. The most intimate one is probably… hug? and holding hands? Nope, we never kiss.” Luhan smiles, Suho looks disappointed.

“What I like about Sehun? Hmm… Everything.” He grins.

“Alright kids, let’s go on with this!” Luhan claps his hands.

 

They spin the water bottle again and this time, the cap faces Baekhyun.

“Oh, it’s me” Baekhyun says. He can literally see his friends smirking, well except Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo is an angel, angel doesn’t smirk.

“Goodness finally!” Suho screams. Baekhyun is taken aback.

Luhan laughs loudly, “You are soooo gonna get it, Baek!”

“What?” Baekhyun looks lost, eyes blink couple times.

“Tell me about your past relationships!” Jongin quickly asks.

Luhan bursts into laugh, “I know they will ask this question! Who doesn’t want to know~” Luhan taps Baekhyun’s chin slyly.

“Uhm, relationships before I’m with Chanyeol?” Baekhyun carefully asks, just making sure.

Jongin nods. Luhan pats Baekhyun’s back, “You guys will be surprised, our Baekhyun here is quite experienced”

Suho’s face is definitely ecstatic to Luhan’s statement. Jongin looks really curious. Even the quite Kyungsoo stares at Baekhyun in wonder. As much as Baekhyun loves his bestfriend, he really feels like he wants to kill Luhan now.

Baekhyun kicks Luhan on the shin lightly then clears his throat, “Well, my first boyfriend is Minseok.”

“Kim Minseok? The accelerated student from SM High?” Kyungsoo suddenly speaks up.

“Yeah… You know him?” Baekhyun asks.

Jongin laughs, “Well, he beat Kyungsoo in his first English debate”

Baekhyun mouths a silent ‘Ah…’ then says, “I’m sorry to know that Kyung, but well, he grew up in London”

Kyungsoo shrugs, “I heard about that too, he was not supposed to be eligible to competition, it’s not fair. He spoke English for almost his entire life, screw him”

“Woo, slow down there, Kyungsoo” Luhan laughs. Baekhyun can’t help but chuckles.

“Yeah, that Minseok. We were dating for like… hm.. 9 months? We broke up because he graduated early.” The rest nods.

“After him?” Jongin asks again.

“I didn’t really date anyone after him. I’m pretty sure I was single until I left school for my exchange program”

“So you didn’t date Chen-hyung? How about Ryeowook-hyung?” Jongin frowns.

Baekhyun laugh, “No, really. We are bestfriends. I never dated them”

“But Baek dated a lot in the US, didn’t you, Baekhyunnie?” Luhan teases him.

Suho’s face lights up almost immediately, “Tell us! Tell us!”

“Geez, you guys are so eager!” Baekhyun laughs.

Jongin shrugs, “Because you are so private, Baek. You never really show your relationship to anybody else around you. That’s why people are eager to know about your relationship, or your ex-boyfriends. It’s information that you will never find unless we ask you directly. Now we have the chance, we use it” He smirks.

“Be ready, though, guys. Baekhyun is quiet famous in America” Luhan nudges Baekhyun playfully. He gets a slap in the arm for that.

“My second boyfriend is Matt. He’s American. His eyes are blue, it’s so fascinating.” Baekhyun dreamily claps his hand together in his cheek.

“Is he the one who’s in the picture you uploaded in facebook? The homecoming pic one?” Jongin asks.

Baekhyun frown, “Ah, no, that’s Mark. He’s my best friend. He was an exchange student from Norway”

“Hey, how did you know about the picture anyway? I’m pretty sure I deleted it after a day or so” Baekhyun wonders.

“Chanyeol showed us.” Jongin laughs.

“What?! How?! Why??” Baekhyun is surprised.

“Let’s just assume that he saved your facebook pic, okay?” Jongin laughs. “Why did you delete it anyway?” Jongin asks.

Baekhyun pouts, “Too many people commented on it, they were asking about who is that guy, is that my boyfriend, where is he coming from, and blah blah. I felt like it kinda bothered my privacy so I deleted it”

Luhan, Kyungsoo and Suho saying “Ah..” in unison.

“Anybody else after Matt?” Jongin asks.

“Jonghyun, Nickhun, Lucas, Kriiiiiss !!!” Luhan suddenly screams happily. Baekhyun smacks his head.

“Oh my god that’s a lot!!!” Suho gets more excited.

“Okay let me explain. I met Jonghyun during one of my school trip there. He’s student from another school and I’m a hundred percent sure that I didn’t date him. Even though he sang songs for me, it doesn’t mean he’s my boyfriend. And Nickhun, he’s another exchange student in my school, from Thailand. Oh my god, Luhan, how many time I have to tell you that he was not my boyfriend! We were just really close, that’s all!” Baekhyun quickly explains.

“Lucas? Kris?”

“Well, Lucas… is Lucas.” Baekhyun bites his inside cheek.

“Tell us!” Suho forces Baekhyun.

“He’s extremely beautiful. He’s German anyway. He has the most perfect brown hair. He’s extremely smart too, but that’s the reason why we broke up” Baekhun awkwardly laughs.

“He didn’t like it if I got higher score than him in the class. We also argued a lot. So yeah, it didn’t really work out. But we’re still friends, though. I helped him choosing his suitcase before he went back home to his country.”

“Baekhyun’s ex-boyfriends always end up as his friends.” Luhan adds.

“Really?” Kyungsoo looks amazed.

Luhan nods. Baekhyun smiles.

“And then Kris.” Baekhyun continues.

“All ears, guys, Kris is special” Luhan reminds Jongin, Kyungsoo and Suho which they accept gladly.

“Well, Kris is Chinese-Canadian. He was a student in my school there, he’s in college now. He was my deskmate in Math Class. He’s really nice and kind. He waited for me in the parking lot every morning and after school just to give me a hug. He used to call me every night before I fell asleep. Whenever I couldn’t sleep, he’d tell me bedtime stories. Sometimes he hummed a song for me. Kris is just… too perfect” Baekhyun finishes with long sigh.

Everybody is quite for a moment.

“Uhm, why did you break up with him?” Jongin asks, for the umpteenth time.

“Nothing lasts forever” Luhan answers for Baekhyun.

“Alright, go on. Suho, your question.” Luhan commands. Baekhyun mentally thank Luhan. There’s no way he would say ‘Oh because I can’t handle long distance relationship, I will be in Korea and he will be far away in the States’

“What is the most intimate thing you’ve ever done in your relationship?” Suho asks. Luhan gives him stink eyes.

 

But the asked boy blushes like crazy. Everybody agapes.

 

“OH MY FREAKING GOD, BYUN BAEKHYUN! YOU’VE DONE IT !” Suho screams.

Luhan snaps his head to see his best friend, “Byun Baekhyun! What have you done? Oh goodness have mercy! What didn’t you tell me?! I’m your bestfriend!”

“For real, you’ve done it?” that’s Jongin asking.

Kyungsoo just open his mouth in awe.

 

“BYUN BAEKHYUN YOU’VE DONE IT!”

 

Baekhyun waves his hands in the air, denial, “NO SUHO BE QUIET!”

Thankfully, everybody settles down to keep their lips zipped.

“No, I haven’t done… it. Gosh, Suho, you need to clean your brain. For your question, the most intimate thing I’ve ever done is… Kissing.” Baekhyun bites his lower lip, preventing it from grinning.

“Oh.” Luhan uninterested.

“What did you mean by ‘Oh’ ?” Suho frowns at Luhan’s reaction.

“Well, he already told me about his first kiss. I know already. I thought there’s something more than that” Luhan says, munching his snacks.

“It was your first kiss?” Kyungsoo asks, he looks genuinely interested.

Baekhyun grins, “Yeah…”

“How does it feel?”

Baekhyun tilts his head to the side, tries to remember, “Well, to be honest, it was more like a peck rather than a kiss. It didn’t involve tongue or even stuff like that. Heck, I didn’t even know that Kris was kissin—Oh crap” Baekhyun immediately claps his hand to his mouth. Luhan laughs loudly.

“OH MY GOD! SO IT WAS KRIS?! YOUR FIRST KISS IS KRIS?!”

“I HAVE TO SEE THIS KRIS GUY! Do you have him on your facebook?!”

Baekhyun facepalms himself, he didn’t mean to say the name but it slipped out of his tongue. He shakes his head then looks at Kyungsoo, “It felt like your lips touching other lips, that’s all”

“But I think it’s pretty normal, isn’t it? I mean like, when you’re in relationship, it’s normal to kiss your lover, isn’t it?” Jongin asks.

Kyungsoo shrugs, “Uhm, I don’t know. I never kiss”

Silence engulfs the five teenagers. Luhan clears his throat, “Okay, I think it’s my turn to ask now, right?” The rest nod.

“Does Chanyeol know about this? All of this? Your past relationships? Your first kiss?”

 

Baekhyun doesn’t expect Luhan would ask that. Everybody pays attention to what Baekhyun’s going to say now.

“Yeah, he knows, everything”

Fourth month in Long Distance Relationship 

 

“Are you going to send something for Chanyeol?” Jongin asks Baekhyun.

Baekhyun tilts his head, confused, “Eung? Why?”

“It’s his birthday today”

Baekhyun’s eyes widen in shock. Jongin looks at him in disbelief, “You’re kidding me—“

“LUHAAAN!!! OH MY GOD!!” Baekhyun flies to Luhan’s seat right away.

“What is it again, princess?” Luhan lazily asks. They’re in study hall, nothing to do.

“Do you know today is Chan’s birthday?” Baekhyun asks Luhan desperately.

Luhan awakes almost immediately, “Ahh, that’s what I’m going to ask you! Have you said ‘Happy Birthday’ to him? Because I’m pretty sure he’ll wait forever until you say it”

Baekhyun bites his lower lip harshly, face full of guilty, nervous and everything in between.

Luhan smacks his forehead, “Crap, I forgot. It’s Baekhyun we’re talking about” He shakes his head in disappointment.

“What did you mean with that?” Jongin frowns, taking a seat beside Luhan.

“This kid over here – “ Luhan points at his bestfriend, “ – he can’t remember dates. As in, whatever dates” Luhan rolls his eyes.

Jongin looks confused.

“Alright, Baek, when is my birthday?” Luhan turns his attention Baekhyun, who looks like he’s going to be eaten by the floor.

Baekhyun’s lost, “Eung? May 6^th?”

“That’s your birthday, dummy”

“April 22^nd?”

“No, that’s Earth day. Pretty close, though” Luhan sighs.

“He’s really this bad?” Jongin brags in, he looks surprised.

“What did you mean this bad? I just can’t remember dates! I even get my parents’ birthdates messed up” Baekhyun whines.

“He’s telling you the truth, dude. Why do you think he failed History? He’s really bad on remembering dates. Tell him your birthdate and he will forget it a minute later. Hence, you can pretty much conclude he doesn’t remember that today is Chanyeol’s birthday.”

Baekhyun looks like he’s about to cry.

“Heck, what are you waiting for? Where’s your phone? Go on facebook, chat him, say Happy Birthday. Or tweet him, mention him on twitter. Don’t make it harder, Baek” Luhan grabs Baekhyun’s phone then unlock it.

Baekhyun quickly opens his social media applications and does as what Luhan told him.

“D-do you think I-I should send him something? O-or s-should I s-say something m-more?” Baekhyun desperately asks.

Jongin about to say something but Luhan beats him, “Naah, you’re fine. You don’t have to do anything that you feel like you don’t have to. I’m pretty sure Chanyeol is happy enough if he sees the tweet from you. Chanyeol is not the kind of person who’s thirsty of gifts or presents anyway. Don’t force yourself. You’re his boyfriend, not Kyungsoo. You’re fine the way you are, you don’t have to do anything that other people told you to do”

“Hey, Baek, how’s Chanyeol doing?” Yixing asks one day

“Uhm? I don’t know…” Baekhyun trails off

The other frowns, “You don’t? Haven’t you talked to him lately?”

Baekhyun bites his inside cheek, “I just… really busy lately… My mom and dad signed me up to prep school that I have to attend after school three days a week, it’s tiring, but my parents thought it’d be good for me to prepare myself for university entrance examination”

“Oh, yeah, you’re right. It’s about time to think about college stuffs” Yixing nods.

“Uhm.. did you talk to Chan recently?” Baekhyun carefully asks.

Yixing tilts his head, “Well, not really recently. Maybe a week ago? Two weeks ago? I don’t really remember. But every time I’m online on facebook, he always asks how your well-being is. He’s mopping around a lot, you know.”

They laugh.

“Just try to spend a bit of your time for him, I know it’s really tough to be in long distance relationship. But it won’t hurt to try. He really missed you” Yixing says again.

Fifth month in Long Distance Relationship

 

It’s the time of the month for Baekhyun. His doctor has been repeatedly reminds him not to drink coffee as much as he consumes, but of course, he has none of that. There’s no way he passes his day without French Vanilla or Cappuccino.

So here he is, clutching his stomach because of the really high level of gastric acid. He feels nauseous. He feels like he’s going to throw up anytime soon.

“Byun Baekhyun, your friends are here, they bring your bag, dear” The school nurse says to him, he’s in the infirmary apparently.

Baekhyun nods and weakly smiles. Kyungsoo’s face come in his vision first.

“Hello Baek, how are you feeling?” the wide-eyed boy asks.

“So much better, Kyung” Baekhyun reassures.

“You haven’t eaten anything, I have Castella, do you want to eat some?” Kyungsoo asks. Luhan enters the room with Baekhyun’s bag on his hand. Jongin and Suho trail after him.

“No, thank you, Kyung. I don’t think my stomach can take anything for now” Baekhyun weakly replies.

“Are you sure? It’s really good, trust me. Chanyeol’s mom taught me the recipe.”

 

At the mention of Chanyeol’s mom, Baekhyun feels like losing, again. Chanyeol’s mom taught Kyungsoo how to make Castella. The cooked together before. While from his side, Chanyeol’s mom won’t even look his way.

Baekhyun whimpers, “Yeah, thank you though”

“I already called your father to pick you up, Baek. Take a rest at home, okay? Drink your medicine and please don’t drink any caffeine, at least until your gastric acid back to normal. Do you hear me?” Luhan asks Baekhyun.

“Thank you so much, Lu. I love you” Baekhyun grins, though it looks strained.

“Nah, it’s nothing. I also told your dad to throw away all your coffee pack in your house.” Luhan smiles, wickedly sweet.

Baekhyun’s face falls, “I take it back, I hate you, Lu”

His mom sighs, “Alright, don’t spend too much time on your laptop, okay? You need to rest. I expect you to fall asleep before your dad come back home from work, got it?”

Baekhyun beams, “Thank you mom, I love you”

 

Byun Baekhyun : giant?

Park Chanyeol : yes, smurf?

Byun Baekhyun : skype? :3

Park Chanyeol : I’m doing my homework now, do you mind waiting?

Byun Baekhyun : oh nevermind then

Park Chanyeol : baek?

                                My smurf?

                                Hey baek?

                                Are you mad?

                                Alright, I’ll log in to skype now, okay?

Byun Baekhyun : no, that’s okay. You need to do your homework

Park Chanyeol : no, it can wait.

Byun Baekhyun : when is it due?

Park Chanyeol : tomorrow….

Byun Baekhyun : see? Just do your hw. I’ll go take a nap

Park Chanyeol : baek? Are you mad?

Byun Baekhyun : no

Park Chanyeol : yes you are

Byun Baekhyun : just go back to your hw. G’night

 

Baekhyun sneaks under his blanket and forces himself to sleep. He feels a slump in his chest. He remembers what Kyungsoo said in school. Somehow every memory comes falling in his mind, like falling pictures.

 

Sometimes I just wonder, why does it feel so wrong?

“Baekhyun, are you ignoring Park Chanyeol?” Luhan asks.

Baekhyun and Luhan spend their time together in their favorite café. It’s weekend and it’s always nice to spend time with your best friend, as well as steal him from his boyfriend.

Baekhyun blankets himself in silence.

“You can’t do that, alright?” Luhan asks again.

“I know long distance relationship is tough and I know clearly you still feel insecure about yourself, but you can’t ignore him forever. You’re the one who decided to work on this relationship, you can’t back out, Baek.”

Baekhyun takes a deep breath, “I know, Lu. But sometimes, it feels so wrong. Sometimes I just don’t know Chan. I didn’t even know his favorite until he had told me before he departed to America, when he was in the freaking airport. Sometimes I feel Jongin and Kyungsoo know him better than me. They do more things to him than what I do to him. They understand him better than me. And I just… I feel inferior to Kyungsoo. I don’t even know what Chanyeol sees in me”

“What are you talking about? You are Byun Baekhyun. The first elected President for our Choir. Byun Baekhyun who has a voice of an angel. The most famous pianist in school. The one who is loved by a lot of students in our school because of his bubbly personality. What does Chanyeol see in you? Heck, a lot. He sees Byun Baekhyun who makes him smile, even the slightest tiny thing he does. He sees Byun Baekhyun who has the kindest heart, who is willing to volunteer in many clubs and extra activities in school. He sees Byun Baekhyun in every aspect that even the said person can’t see”

Baekhyun blushes red, “You’re exaggerating stuffs.”

“Maybe I am, but I told you the truths” Luhan sips his bubble tea.

“Chanyeol should feel lucky to be your boyfriend.” Luhan says again.

Baekhyun tilts his head, confused.

“Since you are so oblivious to everything around you and I’m your best bestfriend who keeps telling you everything, now, child, pay attention. Kibum told me he likes you”

Baekhyun agapes, “Kibum? The prefect in our class?”

“Yes, darl. See? You don’t even realize how he acts around you.”

“Well, he’s a really nice person.” Baekhyun beams.

“Because he likes you. Easy peasy. Do you know Taemin?” Luhan asks again.

“Oh, the nice junior from the dance club! What about him?”

“He has a crush on you. I’m pretty sure Jongin knows about this too. Don’t be surprised of later on if Chanyeol asks you about Taemin. You know Jongin, that kid reports everything about you to Chanyeol. Literally” Luhan rolls his eyes.

Baekhyun pouts, “But I’m not cheating on him. I swear!”

“I know, Baek. I know. It’s not your fault that those people crushing on you. In case Chanyeol asks you, just tell him the truth”

“Uhm, Lu?”

Luhan knows that voice tone. Baekhyun always sounds like that whenever he asks something from Luhan. He sounds so sickenedly sweet.

“What can I do for you, Baek?”

“Hey, Jongin? Can I talk to you in private?” Luhan suddenly approaches the dancer.

Jongin raises his eyebrow, “Sure”

Their class is having PE right now. Baekhyun is excused from PE class because he takes the class hour to practice track and field instead.

Luhan drags Jongin away from the crowd.

“What’s up?” Jongin asks Luhan as they sit on the bleacher.

“I need to ask you few things, if you don’t mind” Luhan starts, coolly.

“Go ahead”

“Do you know why Chanyeol and Kyungsoo broke up?” Luhan ask.

“Oh, you don’t know?”

Luhan shakes his head.

“Well, they’ve known each other since they were very little so practically they’re like brothers. Even their family is really close.”

“Obviously” Luhan quietly remarks.

Jongin ignores Luhan’s little comment, “Chanyeol doesn’t really hang out with anybody else during his first year in high school. Sure he had a lot of friends, he still does. But no one was as close as Kyungsoo to him. So Chanyeol thought he liked Kyungsoo, that’s why they were dating. Heck, Chanyeol was lame. Can you imagine he asked Kyungsoo out through Yahoo Messenger? And I was the one who typed “yes” as a reply”

Luhan looks taken aback, “You’re the one who answered the confession?”

“Well, yeah. Because honestly Kyungsoo didn’t know what to say. So I answered it for him. I guess that’s why, even though they were dating, they didn’t act like lovers or boyfriends or something like that. They remained just like how they were before.”

“I heard they broke up because of Baekhyun.” Luhan meddles.

Jongin looks like he’s thinking for awhile before finally says, “Well, I can’t really say it’s wrong though.”

He steals glances to Luhan, watching if the said boy paying attention to him.

“Go on.”

“You know Baekhyun is not the member of English Club despite of how perfect his English is, right?”

Luhan nods.

“Do you… somehow... know what the reason is? Because I know for sure English teachers in our school had been asking him for so many times but he keeps refusing it. Even now.” Jongin wonders.

“Well, do you know Chen-hyung?” Luhan asks, Jongin nods. “Apparently Chen-hyung’s ex-girlfriend is in the club. It’s not only that, though. Baekhyun just really dislikes being around ‘couple’. Because, you know, he doesn’t want to be accused as the reason that couples, any couples, breaking up”

Jongin lets out a silent “Ah…”

“Okay, I’m going to continue.” Jongin speaks up.

“So one day, Chanyeol told me that Baekhyun appeared in the English Club. Apparently the teachers asked him to volunteer to be the opponent of the debate team. You know, debate practice” Jongin shrugs.

“That’s the first time Chanyeol met Baekhyun.”

“Oh my god don’t tell me this is another sappy ‘Love at the First Sight’ story?” Luhan throws Jongin a disbelief look.

Jongin laughs, “As sappy as it sounds, you’re right. I know Baekhyun since day one I got into this school. He’s just really well-known, you know. While Chanyeol, being Chanyeol he is. He didn’t know Baekhyun before the English Club practice.”

“Chanyeol might kill me for telling you his secrets but well, he’s in America, what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”

Luhan laughs, “What secrets?”

“After Chanyeol saw Baekhyun for the first time and practiced debate with him, I can tell you, Chanyeol lost the debate. And that marks the first time Park Chanyeol lost in English debate”

Luhan’s face looks amused but also disbelief, “You’re kidding me! Baekhyun affected him that much?!”

“Hell yeah. He even stalked Baekhyun’s facebook. He made twitter account to follow Baekhyun. Park Chanyeol is that embarrassing. He’s a disgrace to our kind.”

Jongin and Luhan laugh loudly.

“Did Kyungsoo say anything during that time?” Luhan carefully asks.

“Kyungsoo knew. He knew Chanyeol liked somebody else. He didn’t say anything against it, he even being supportive. I know it sounds really ridiculous. But that’s a fact”

“Chanyeol was afraid to approach Baekhyun at first. Because well, he was our senior, he was really well-known in our school, still is. Chanyeol also thought that he was dating Chen-hyung or Ryeowook-hyung. Of course, he had no gut to make sure about Baekhyun’s relationship status. So he chose to be a secret admirer.”

“When Baekhyun was in the States, you have no idea how much I had to keep up with the constant nagging and whining from Chanyeol whenever he saw Baekhyun’s pictures with a guy or a girl, standing close to each other. Damn, Chanyeol is whipped.”

“So when Baekhyun came back from America and he knows that Baekhyun was not in relationship with anybody, he gathers all his guts to ask Baekhyun out.”

“What did Kyungsoo say about it?” Luhan asks.

“Oh, he already saw it coming, really. He knew his relationship was nothing like lovers.” Jongin shrugs.

“So, he doesn’t hold any grunge against Baekhyun?”

Jongin chuckles, “No, don’t worry about that.”

 

They fall into a comfortable silence.

“You know – “ Luhan starts, Jongin turns his head to see Luhan. “Baekhyun is really sensitive. He feels like people keep comparing Kyungsoo to him. He feels inferior.”

“Oh my god, I can tell you that Baekhyun shouldn’t feel that way. Chanyeol only has his heart sets on Baekhyun!” Jongin looks taken aback.

“It seems like that. But you know Baekhyun, he’s afraid if people judge him”

“Chanyeol would be sad if he hears this.” Jongin’s disappointed.  

 

“But anyway, thank you for telling me this. It opens my eyes, really.” Luhan smiles.

Baekhyun picks up his phone, Luhan calls, “Hello? Lu?”

“Hey Baek, I have all the information you wanted to know”

Baekhyun can see Luhan is smirking on another line call, he laughs, “Thank you, Lu.”

“Nah, don’t mention it. Hey Baek?”

“Yes?”

“If you still feel insecure, or anything, you can always talk about it with Chanyeol, y’know”

“Yeah, I know.”

Seventh month in Long Distance Relationship 

 

“Honey, I don’t really see you talking to Chanyeol lately.” Baekhyun’s mom pats his son’s head, he’s studying in his room.

“We’re taking a break, mom”

 

Baekhyun’s mom looks taken aback by his son’s answer. She knows clearly that Baekhyun used to be glued to his phone, trying to maintain his relationship. She used to remind Baekhyun to sleep because his son just loved talking to his boyfriend until past midnight. But now, Baekhyun doesn’t even touch his laptop.

 

“Is everything okay?” She sits on the edge of Baekhyun’s bed.

Baekhyun turns his swivel chair, facing his mom, “Yeah. I just need time for myself, finals are coming up, and I’m nervous about the university entrance examinations” Baekhyun shrugs.

His mom gently smiles, “You’ll do good, dear. I trust you. Now, c’mon, dinner is ready”

The class is a lot noisier than it usually does. The students are talking about the theme of their class for the yearbook.

Baekhyun raises his hand, “But it’s not fair. We already agreed before that our class will do ‘Vintage’ as the theme. You guys can’t just go to the committee then change it ‘Street Style’.”

Other students speak up as well, agreeing with Baekhyun’s statement.

It just ridiculous. Jiyoung and his friends suddenly come up and announce that the photo theme of their class has changed.

Jiyoung raises his hand arrogantly, telling students to be quiet, “But the committee already changed it”

The class becomes a chaos. Students protesting here and there. Some agree with the changing of the theme.

“You can’t just make decision without asking the rest of the students in the class!”

“Shut up, Baek! You think because you’re older than us here then we have to hear your opinion?!” Jiyoung suddenly snaps.

 

The class immediately becomes eerily quiet.

 

Baekhyun opens and closes his mouth repeatedly but no words come out. To say that he’s surprised is an understatement. Never once crossed in his mind to force people to hear his opinion just because he is the older one.

 

“You know what? To the hell with yearbook! We don’t care about this photo session, do whatever the hell you want!” Luhan snaps back and grabs Baekhyun out of the class.

 

They stop at the restroom. Baekhyun is frozen. Luhan knows that his bestfriend is really sensitive. Baekhyun is afraid of people judging him. Baekhyun is afraid about what people say behind his back. But Jiyoung just pulled the last straw. He literally just made Baekhyun becomes even more self-conscious than he already is.

“Baek, don’t listen to Jiyoung, okay?” Luhan hugs Baekhyun. Baekhyun is still stiff in his arms.

 

Sometimes I just wonder, what would it feel to have you in class? Would you take my side and tell Jiyoung off?

The next day, the atmosphere in the class is really tense and awkward. Baekhyun refuses to talk to other students except Luhan. He spends his day with Luhan and Luhan only.

Mrs. Byun realizes that his son has been extremely quiet recently. But Baekhyun doesn’t say anything to her. Baekhyun just drowns himself in study and nothing else.

Mrs. Byun never says it out loud but it breaks her heart so much to hear his only son cries every night in his room. But she never can get him to open his mouth.

“Baek, honey, wake up” Baekhyun’s mom shakes his son’s shoulder. It’s weekend and Baekhyun decides to be lazy and cocoons in his blanket.

“No, mom, no. 10 minutes.” Baekhyun mumbles.

Mrs. Byun laughs. Baekhyun always looks like a five years old kid when he mumbles in his sleep.

“Well, guess who just called me to say that he’s coming over” His mom sounds secretive

Baekhyun rubs his eyes, “Eung? Daddy?”

“No. Well, he did, but it’s not him”

“Mmkay” Baekhyun plops back to his bed.

“Oh my goodness, Byun Baekhyun, wake up! You have someone waiting for you!” His mom pulls his blanket quickly.

 

Then he hears someone chuckles, “I guess he’s still the same koala, isn’t he?”

 

Baekhyun snaps his eyes open, “CHEEEEN!!!”

He struggles to get out from his bed then immediately jumps to hug Chen. His mom laughs.

“Oh my god, you’re back in town!”

“I know you missed me, Baek, but please, brush your teeth first”

Mrs. Byun is more than glad to see the sunshine in his son’s face. She’s happy to see Baekhyun chirps happily with his best friend.

Apparently Chen has a break from college so he decided to come back to his parents’ house. That’s why he comes over to spend some time with Baekhyun.

“Alright, we’re all set to go. Bye Aunty, I’ll give Baekhyun back later” Chen and Baekhyun wave Baekhyun’s mom goodbye. They’re heading to their favorite café in town.

“Oh? You’re not drinking coffee? A change of heart?” Chen teases.

“Naah, Lu always scolds me for drinking coffee because of my gastric acid.” Baekhyun shrugs, sipping his bubble tea.

“Luhan sounds really nice.”

“He is! He is like another Chen! You know, Lu’s family just moved to a new house close to the school so he waits for me everyday until I get picked up. Then he walks back home. He’s kind, right?” Baekhyun beams.

“I’m happy you have someone cares for you, Baek. I really am. I was really worried when you told me about your class problem. Anything changes?”

“Not really.” Baekhyun pouts. “I start to talk with other students, I mean, other than Lu. But that’s it. They ask me, I answer. I don’t really try to engage more conversation anymore. I don’t feel like it”

“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”

 

They fall into a comfortable silence, just watching people passing by in this Sunday morning.

 

“Are you still with him?” Chen suddenly asks.

Baekhyun blinks, “Chan?”

Chen chuckles, “Is there anybody else?”

“Oh. No.”

“You broke up?!” Chen nearly spurts his drink.

“What? No! I mean, there’s nobody else. I and Chan decided to take a break from each other. I need to focus on school, it almost ends. University comes next”

Chen nods, “Hey bestie, can I ask you questions?”

“Sure. Just ask.”

“Why?”

Baekhyun confused, “What did you mean ‘why’ ?”

“You know Baek, I’ve known you for almost 6 years. You never ever stayed longer than 9 months in relationship, heck, this is even the long distance one! Why do you try so hard to maintain your relationship with Chanyeol?” Chen asks.

“Maybe because I promised myself that I’ll try my best this time.”

“So, Chanyeol is not another ‘nothing lasts forever’ ?”

“Chen, nothing does last forever.”

“Tell me what you really feel.” Chen demands.  

 

“To be honest with you, I feel like . I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore. Everything feels so wrong. Yes, Chan is really caring. He even sent me an e-mail on Valentine’s day and I didn’t reply it. But it feels so wrong. Where is he when I need him the most? Where is he when I have problems in class? Where is he when I feel like talking to him?” Baekhyun’s voice croaks, he’s on the edge of breaking down.

“I’m tired, Chen. I really am. Sometimes I feel like he’s been doing everything while I do nothing. Heck he even put up with me while I was on my crazy mood because of Girls’ Generation’s new album”

“Did he really?” Chen asks in pure wonder.

“Yeah. He didn’t make fun of me about it. He listened to every single crap I told him about Taeyeon. But how about me? He doesn’t tell me whatever he do there, I don’t know who his friends are, I don’t know which club he belongs to, I’m dying to know but I don’t want to be a nosey boyfriend. I don’t want him to find me annoying. But it feels so wrong. Sometimes I feel our relationship just restrains us to do whatever we want to do.” Baekhyun sighs.

 

Chen sips his drink, “Hey Baek, maybe you need to stop trying.”

Eighth month in Long Distance Relationship 

 

“Final is in a month” Luhan says for a hundredth time.

“Yeah.”

“I’m nervous.”

“Me too” Baekhyun sighs.

“We can do it, right?” Luhan smiles reassuringly. Baekhyun smiles at him.

“Have you thought about which college you’re going to?” Luhan asks his bestfriend.

“Yes.” Baekhyun looks down to stare at his shoes.

 

Luhan keeps quiet for a moment before he asks, “Are you really going to go to the university in London?” He sounds sad.

Baekhyun chuckles, “I’d love to, but you know the test would be godly difficult, right?”

“You’re going to pass it, I’m sure” Luhan says.

Baekhyun sighs, “I hope so.”

 

“London is really far away”

 

“Hey, what about you? Still thinking? Or are you finally have your decision?” Baekhyun tries to change the subject.

“I’ve made my decision. I’m going to go to medical school.” Luhan beams.

“Oh my god that’s wonderful! Dang, I remember how you used to scold me for drinking coffee. But you also bought me coffee when I felt cranky” Baekhyun laughs.

“Hey there! I bought you the decaff one!” Luhan pouts.

“I know, thanks Lu”

Silence blankets the two teenagers.

“Hey Lu?”

“Hmm?”

“Thank you for accompanying me to get picked up. I know you ditch Sehun for my sake. Thank you, Lu”

“It’s fine, really, Baek.” He hugs Baekhyun.

“I’m going to miss you after graduation, so much.” Luhan says.

“Me too. One month left and we will go on our way.” Baekhyun feels melancholic.

 

Luhan releases his arms from his bestfriend, “Baek? Can I ask you something?”

“Anything”

“Talk to Chanyeol? Please? It’s been like what, a month? Maybe talking to him would be your good luck charm for finals” Luhan teases.

 

Baekhyun laughs, “Alright, Lu”

Baekhyun absentmindedly opens the twitter app in his phone. It’s been like forever since the last time he indulged himself in social media. Because of school matters, Baekhyun didn’t open his social media.

He clicks on his boyfriend’s profile. But the last tweet from Chanyeol brings a familiar tug in his chest.

Ninth month in Long Distance Relationship 

 

“IT’S OVER !” Luhan screams as soon as he gets out from the classroom. Baekhyun laughs at his bestfriend’s antic.

“What do you think about the final?” Baekhyun asks, playing with his bag straps a little bit.

“Argh, c’mon Baek. The points about test are do it then forget it.” Luhan sasses.

 

Baekhyun hums, “Graduation tonight.”

 

Their school always holds the graduation night on the last day of finals.

 

“Yeah, don’t you feel happy to finally escape from those es?” Luhan snorts at Jiyoung and his gang.

“More than happy actually” Baekhyun half-joking.

 

They walk to the front gates. Luhan accompanies Baekhyun until he gets picked up.

 

“I guess this is the last time I’m waiting with you until you get picked up, huh?”

“Yeah”

 

The breeze dances around the two young boys, playing with the strands of their hair.

 

“I’m going to miss this” Luhan whispers.

“Me too”

Baekhyun worships graduation. In his mind, graduation is always sacred. It’s literally the time of your life when you realize that you’re done with high school. You will be a fully adult and face the real world out there. You will go on your own way to reach your future.

Baekhyun walks down to the stage when he’s name being called. He’s done.

When the seniors names are all called and they get their diploma, they throw away their cap and scream in happiness. Baekhyun and Luhan laugh to their heart content.

But Baekhyun can’t lie.

He feels tug inside his chest when he sees Sehun approaches his bestfriend to hug him. He watches longingly as Sehun holds Luhan’s hand gently.

 

Sometimes I just wonder, how does it feel to hold your hand?

 

Baekhyun immediately finds his parents. They cry in happiness because their baby is finally done with high school.

Baekhyun cries too. He’s happy, he’s proud of his accomplishment.

But mostly, he cries because someone who really wants to be with right now is not here beside him.

When Baekhyun’s parents let their son having his moments with his friends, Kyungsoo approaches him.

“Baekhyun?” The wide-eyed boy calls him.

“Hey, Kyung! Congratulations!” Baekhyun beams.

“Congratulations for you too!”

“Are you excited for college?” Baekhyun happily asks.

“I am” Kyungsoo smiles widely.

 

Then Baekhyun hears his parents call him.

“Oh, I gotta go” Baekhyun says.

Kyungsoo holds his arms out, motioning a hug.

Baekhyun softly smiles then hugs Kyungsoo, “I’m gonna miss you, Baek.” Kyungsoo whispers.

 

Baekhyun is a little bit surprised with what Kyungsoo said, he hugs Kyungsoo tighter, “I’m gonna miss you too, Kyung”

 

Kyungsoo pats Baekhyun’s back, he gently smiles, “Chanyeol was right”

Baekhyun looks confused, “About what?”

“Everything about you, you’re too precious”

 

Baekhyun blushes.

 

“Especially the part that you smell really good”

 

Baekhyun laughs. After a lot more of ‘I’m gonna miss you’, ‘good luck for college or university’ and ‘take care’, Baekhyun leaves the school ground.

Baekhyun is a productive free-loader. He’s done a couple of university entrance tests so now he just has to wait for the results.

For the time being, he stays with his cousin in Seoul, away from his parents. Instead of doing nothing in Seoul, Baekhyun is now working part-time in the music store close to the apartment where he stays with his cousin. It’s not a place where you buy new CD album and such, it’s more like a place where you can find different kinds of musical instruments and its compartments. The store owner adores Baekhyun because he plays piano really well and it draws more visitors to the store.

“Mr. Lee, I’m taking my break now” Baekhyun reports to the owner.

“Okay!” His boss answers.

 

Baekhyun walks to the café next door. He orders his drink then takes a seat near the window, watches people passing by.

 

He unlocks his phone, quickly logs in to facebook. Now to think of it, how long has it been since the last time he talked to Chanyeol?

 

Fortunately, Chanyeol is online. Baekhyun is pretty sure somehow it’s around midnight in Chanyeol’s place.

 

Park Chanyeol : hey there

 

Baekhyun smiles. Chanyeol greets him the second he’s online. But the smile quickly vanishes when he realizes, he said hey there. Chanyeol usually greets him loudly and in full of spirit each times he’s online. But Baekhyun keeps positive thinking, maybe Chan is tired.

 

Byun Baekhyun : hello chan, how are you?

Park Chanyeol : I’m pretty good. Congratulations on your graduation!

Byun Baekhyun : thank you :)

                                Aren’t you graduating there too?

Park Chanyeol : yeah in two weeks

Byun Baekhyun : oh okay. Isn’t it like midnight there? Why don’t you sleep yet?

Park Chanyeol : I’m still talking to Sulli :)

 

Baekhyun frowns, Sulli? Who is Sulli?

 

Byun Baekhyun : who is sulli?

Park Chanyeol : oh, I haven’t told you about her, yet?

                                She was my prom date

                                Remember you told me to ask someone to go with me to prom?

Baekhyun reads Chanyeol’s chat a couple of times, and each time he feels his chest tighten.

 

Byun Baekhyun : tell her I said hi :)

 

Baekhyun doesn’t wait for Chanyeol’s reply as he soon logs out from facebook. He grabs his drink and walks out of the café. Somehow, he feels like something has changed but he can’t point out what.

Luhan stays in their hometown. He attends prep-school every weekend with Sehun. It’s all to prepare himself for the test he has to take to get into the medical school he wants.

Apparently, Jongin and Kyungsoo are in the same class as him in the prep-school.

“Lu? You’re taking this class too?” Jongin asks the second he sees Luhan enters the class.

“Hey you. Yes I am. Same goes with you and Kyungsoo, hmm?”

Jongin chuckles, “Is Baekhyun going to this prep-school too?”

“Oh no, no. He’s in Seoul right now” Luhan quickly answers, “Unlike you and Kyungsoo, Baekhyun and I can separate ourselves for the time being” He adds.

 

Jongin just laughs, “Well, I don’t know why Kyungsoo is here, though. He’s already accepted in the university he wants!”

“Oh really? Where?”

“Kyungsoo is going to continue his study in the States.” Jongin wraps his arm on Kyungsoo’s shoulder but the latter is busy scrolling his phone.

 

If Luhan is surprised, he hides it pretty well, “That’s cool.”

 

I hope Baek doesn’t know this. He’d think Kyungsoo would be able to meet Chanyeol. His insecurity will become even worse, Luhan thinks.

It’s two weeks later that Jongin suddenly approaches Luhan in the middle of the class break.

“Hey, Luhan, I have a great news” Jongin beams.

“Oh, really? What is it?” Luhan raises his brow.

“But promise me that you won’t say anything to Baekhyun. It’s a surprise”

Luhan’s corner lip turns up a little bit, “Secretive~ I like this. Alright, tell me what it is”

Jongin grins blindingly, “Chanyeol is coming to visit”

Luhan’s eyes widen in surprise, he doesn’t believe it, “You’re kidding.” He deadpans.

“No! Why would I kid you? He’s coming this October, he already booked the plane” Jongin tries to convince Luhan.

 

Luhan’s face immediately falls. Instead of happy, he feels extremely bad.
