Chapter 3

Hopeless Dream

Hoseok was a straightforward person. And for some reason his candid remarks and opinions often dragged him into uncomfortable situations. He simply did not understand the point of using filter. He was a strong believer of ‘Truth wins’ and did not care to think before he spoke.  But the moment the words  slipped out of his mouth he was highly amused. The cute girl in front of him looked like she was going to have a panic attack.

Ha Eun’s feelings we inexplicable. Her eyes widened in bafflement and his words brought a faint blush to her cheeks. She quickly looked away and pursed her lips. An action that Ha Eun did whenever she was nervous or uncomfortable.

“You’re scaring her you stupid horse!” Joohi laughed as she wrapped her arm around Ha Eun’s shoulder." Sorry about him hon.  He tends to be a little blunt.” She said with a smile on her face. Ha Eun simply nodded as she refused to look at Hoseok.  Joohi then lightly flicked Heoseok’s forehead before whispering something to him . Ha Eun stared at the two friends and felt a twinge of jealousy. But she chose to ignore it as she knew it was pointless to think that she had a chance with Hoseok.

After Joohi finished talking to J- Hope she turned to Ha Eun." Ha Eun, would you like to play basketball with us." She enquired.

Ha Eun quickly shook her head no. Basketball was her arch enemy. Her memories associated with the game were simply cringe-worthy and painful. The memory of her falling and breaking her hand in 6th grade came rushing to her mind. Then in seventh grade Ha Eun accidently threw the ball at Kris Wu, who was the leader of the basket ball team. She unintentionally threw the ball at his most vital body part and the boy was immediately taken  to the  school nurse. The fact that he was the hottest 8th grader didn’t help either. That year her P.E coach forbade her from playing the sport ever again and Ha Eun was extremely thankful.   So Ha Eun didn’t even hesitate to reject the offer. She would rather live a life without Manga than play the game.

Joohi seemed a little disappointed when Ha Eun rejected the offer but nevertheless she smiled .

“Well, since you don’t want to play, you’ll be stuck with Hoseok! No one wants this bastard on their team. He can barely dribble the ball.” She snickered as she glanced at Hoseok who was glaring at her.

“You’re not one to talk, you little .” Hoseok spat in return.  Ha Eun was tempted to say ‘ Watch your profanity’ , but she chose not to. Joohi’s comment obviously irked Hoseok, and by saying that she would just aggravate the problem.

“I’m way better than you. At least someone wants me on their team.” Joohi smirked before skipping towards the basketball court. Ha Eun watched her retreating figure and that was when the fact that she would be alone with J-Hope dawned upon her. Ha Eun wanted strangle her parents that very moment. If it weren’t for them she wouldn’t be in this situation.

Joohi quickly stole a glance at J-hope who was looking straight ahead. Ha Eun felt utterly helpless.

“You could sit you know.” J-hope said sensing the flustered girl’s nervousness. Ha Eun meekly nodded before sitting down.  J-Hope soon plopped himself down next to her. They weren’t extremely close but the proximity was enough for Ha Eun to freak out.  Ha Eun slowly dragged herself away from Hoseok prayed that her movements were subtle. After she was a good distance away from her crush, Ha Eun tried concentrating in the game. The two teenagers sat there in silence and watched the others play. Concentrating in the game was an extremely hard task for Ha Eun. She continuously stole glances at J-Hope. It was an enthralling sight . The evening sun brought out the chestnut highlights in J-Hope’s hair and his eyes seemed even more elegant. Ha Eun felt like she was under a trance. Ha Eun just couldn’t stop staring at Hoseok

“Quit staring at me .”  The latter said while not sparing a glance at Ha Eun as he continued to look forward.

Ha Eun was highly embarrassed at being caught and quickly turned away. She fidgeted in her place and prayed for Joohi to come and rescue her from the awkward situation.  The silence was suffocating and Ha Eun desperately wanted to run back home.

“I wasn’t staring at you!” Denial was the first thing that came to Ha Eun’s mind. She thought that it would be the best way to get out of the situation.

“Sure.” Hoseok said smugly. He lightly chucked at the girl’s exasperated expression before clearing his throat.

“You see Ha Eun, Joohi was lying. I’m actually really good at the sport.” He sheepishly said as he scratched his neck.

“But that does not explain why no one wants you on their team.” Ha Eun said as she looked at Hoseok sceptically.

“T-that’s because I’m unbelievably good at the game. Obviously, humans are egoistic s and when one person outshines the other, it’s a blow to their ego.  That’s why no one chose me. It’s simply because I lower their self-esteem.”

That was by far the most absurd thing that Ha Eun had ever heard. She couldn’t help but laugh at her crush’s words.

“It’s the truth!” Hoseok whined and  the girl continued to laugh.

“Sure.” Ha Eun said with the  same smugness that Hoseok had previously used. She was quite shocked at herself. She was not the type of person that picked on anyone, but Hoseok seemed like an exception.

Soon she stopped laughing and noticed Hoseok’s dejected expression. He was lightly pouting and it was an endearing sight. But the fact that she made the boy sad made her feel guilty.

“If it makes you feel better, I’m actually terrible at the game. In seventh grade, when I was in Busan, I accidently threw a ball at a boy’s crotch and I didn’t see him in school for about a week.” The moment she blurted the incident she felt embarrassed. She quickly covered her flushed face with her hands. Hoseok on the other hand was laughing his head off.

“The same thing happened to Yi Fan. I mean, years ago a girl supposedly threw a ball at him and he didn’t go to school for days. He told us that it was excruciatingly painful.” Hoseok said in between his laughter. Ha Eun couldn’t help but laugh along with him. It was contagious.

After calming themselves down, Hoseok pointed at one of the boys in the court.

“That’s the idiot I was talking about. His name his Yi Fan.” Ha Eun squinted her eyes to get a better view of the boy. And she nearly died when she realized who it was. The same sharp features. The same brown hair. The same handsome face. It was Kris wu.

“ Oh my flying god! That’s the boy I was talking about!” She shrieked.

Hoseok quizzically looked at her before he burst out laughing. “Oh my god, Ha Eun!! You are hilarious! I think I’m going to pee.”  Ha Eun, on the other hand stared at the tall and handsome boy in horror. He was probably going to slaughter her and feed her to Ceberus.

“Please don’t tell him it was me.” Ha Eun pleaded as Hoseok continued to laugh. After a few minutes  Hoseok got his laughter under control and ruffled Ha Eun’s hair. Ha Eun blushed  at the contact and looked away.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell him.” Hoseok chuckled. The girl was undeniably unique. He expected the wallflower to act like one and was surprised at her quirky personality.

They both sat there for the rest of the time occassionally talking. Ha Eun wasn't going to lie. She absolutely enjoyed Hoseok's company. After a few minutes Joohi came back panting.

"I am exhausted!" She said in and extremely dramatic way before pulling Ha Eun up. "We better get going, hon." She continued.

Ha Eun nodded and was about to bid farewell to Hoseok when he stood up too. "I'll come with you guys." He said with a small smile playing on his lips.

"Okay." Was all Joohi said before she dragged Ha Eun. The two of them talked for a couple of minutes before Joohi and Hoseok began to converse. Ha Eun didn't mind though. She was exhausted by all the talking that she had done. But it all felt so surreal. Never had she thought ,she would get a chance to talk to her crush.

After walking for about fifteen minutes the trio stopped. Ha Eun realized that they were in Hoseok's neighborhood. It was barely five minutes away from her street.

"Okay, bye !" Hoseok's way of bidding farewell to Joohi was extremely peculiar and it got Ha Eun wondering if Hoseok would behave the same way with her. But fortunately he didn't.

" Bye Ha Eun . You better talk to me in school tomorrow. " He said before ruffling her hair one last time. He began walking away but then he halted and turned around. "Oh! Sit with us during luch tomorrow!" He didn't even wait for a reply and quickly walked away.

She looked at him unable to believe what just happened. She'd got to be dreaming. Joohi seemed shocked too.Being Hoseok's friend for years, she had never seen him be such a gentleman.

"Well, I think someone's got a crush on you." Joohi said with a small grin on her face.

Yeah, it was definitely a dream.
