Starting w/ Titles

How to Win the Fanfiction Game

Just realized there’s a ton of these kinds of advice posts… LOL. Whatever.

Alright, so to start with, let’s talk about TITLES. Sometimes, thinking of a title can literally be the hardest thing ever. I remember, there was this one time I stressed about a title for almost a week for one of my stories. #affstruggles

So… how do you pick out a good title?

Well, what is a good title?

In my opinion, a good title is one that stands out to a bored reader when he/she (most likely she LOL) is scrolling through stories. Aka, cliché titles are a big no no.

Titles such as: Love, A Girl In Love, A Boy and a Girl, etc, etc. I'm sorry, these are kind of bad examples but I think we get the idea eh? Because everyone, lets be honest, even though we’re taught “don’t judge a book by its title” WE ALL DO. (dirty little secret revealed right there)

Btw, am I supposed to sensor my language in this? I’m really not sure… I also feel like AFF users are steadily becoming younger so I'm worried.

Okay, also, another thing to not do (in my opinion) is all the weird decorations/variations people do to the titles? Do you feel? No? No worries, I will provide examples.

*\~~\@#%OPPA SARANGHAE%#@/~~/* or H E L L O  M Y  F A T E D  O P P A

We all know what I'm talking about, right? I mean… yes, it will catch people’s attention, but it’s not going to come off as a professional or serious story. And okay, before everyone starts yelling at me about AFF being just for fun and NOT serious/professional, I just want to say that even if this is just a hobby of yours, it’s awesome to create quality work, right? And adding one of those kinds of childish titles wouldn’t do the story justice.

Another thing to not do (wow sorry, a lot of not-to-do’s). I think it’s best if you just keep Korean words out of titles. Actually, just all non English words. Like I said above, it really does take away from the quality. There are 304985 BILLION English words. Not saying that there shouldn’t be any Korean words in a story but for a title, please. consider this title for a moment: Oppa Wae You Don’t Sarang Me?

yes.

We could get the same message across with: When Love Becomes Unattainable.

Haha okay, that sounds kind of boring, but still, which one sounds better?

Anyways, so now that we know what to not do, lets talk about what TO do.

Use correct title format!!!!!!!!! By this I mean, capitalize the first and last word and all the “important” words in between. It’s the worst to see a title completely undercased.

So, for catching people’s attentions, use strong words. What stands out more, mean vs. ruthless. Putting it into context, it becomes Mean Love vs. Ruthless Love.

Don’t know about y’all but I’d read the latter.

Okay I think that’s going to be it for this first chapter.

THIS IS SO LAME I'M SO SORRY. Pretty much this is all taught in school but I just see so many bad titles on AFF and IT HURTS ME. Also, me saying this might make me sounds like a loser BUT I'M USUALLY NOT THIS BORING GUYS (also usually not this not sweary). But I was kinda rushed because I really REALLY need to pee and I'm sure there’s more stuff I should’ve included/I'm sure we’ve all seen this before I'M SORRY. I NEED TO GO PEE REALLY BAD.

But yeah, just to recap:

  • Don’t use cliché titles
  • Don’t use weird decorations/capitalizations
  • Don’t use non-English words
  • Capitalize correct words
  • Use attention grabbing words

OKAY BYE SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

Chapter 1: I couldn't agree more when it comes to titles...But, I've noticed that a lot of stories that do have ridiculous titles get more attention.

I'm personally not a big fan of them as I find them to be kind of idiotic (lol sorry not sorry).

It's become SO common for a story entitled, I'm Married To -------!?!?!? to get more attention than a story named...I don't know, Insufferable or something along those lines.

It's unfair, honestly, because you can obviously see the difference between someone who just slapped a title together or someone who spent a lot of time mulling over it.

I also have a huge pet peeve when it comes to author's giving their WHOLE plot away in the title...But I could rant about that for ever. X.X

Anyways, nice job. I like the advice. ^^
