The Only Lullaby

The Only Lullaby

“I’ll forever be your one and only lullaby…”

Half past one in the midnight, the sounds of the thunder echoed in his sleep. Eyes wide opened, he was awake because of the unwanted noise that was coming out the window, too loud that his body started to shiver. The thunder sound would never be his lullaby, because he hated it. He wanted to ignore and sleep but his eyes insisted to stay awake. He sat up and leaned against the headboard. He let out a long sigh and pulled the blanket over his body. He was scared, but too tired to cry out his fear since he was crying for almost 24 hours that caused his eyes became sore and swollen, also he had no one to be leaned on right then. He needed his lullaby so bad.

The pain under his chest was unbearable. His heart couldn’t stop from bleeding, his wounds were invisible but it could clearly be seen in his eyes. The heavy downpour reminded him to the one that he loved the most. The one that left him alone in the darkness, the one that made his heart broke into pieces, the one that crushed his world down and the one that could no longer sing him a lullaby. Every corner of his mansion had a memory of him and his lover, every picture of the blonde could be seen even though they had been thrown into the fire. The blonde’s smile with crescent-shaped eyes and soft pink lips kept on flashing right behind his eyes.

‘You are my one and only lullaby.’ He whispered to himself. He wanted to let the other listen to his words, but it was impossible. The person had already gone too far from him, leaving him there, surrounded by sorrows and darkness.

Flashback:

‘It was raining heavily out there.’ Kai stood with his back leaned against the wall and looked to his right, gazing out the window. He was waiting for his Blondie for the dinner, but it seemed like the blonde wouldn’t be coming right on time, and perhaps the pale-skinned boy must be trapped in the traffic jam. Kai took a deep breath, sliding his feet in his slippers and shuffled to the door. He felt regret because he was the one who insisted to let the blonde came by himself. ‘I should have picked him up at his place, pabo me.’

He made his way downstairs heading to the kitchen. When he was about to reach the dining hall, he heard one of the maids were talking to the phone.

‘Okay Master. Is there anything else?’

The maid hung up the phone and walked heading to the dining hall. She jolted a bit when Kai suddenly popped out of nowhere and was standing right in front of her and the phone almost slid from her hand, fortunately Kai was the one who caught the phone from falling.

‘Who were you talking to just now?’ Kai asked with curiosity growing inside him. He was hoping for good news and he wished that it wasn’t his dad who loved to be the devil between him and Sehun.

‘I- uhm, it- w-was your dad young m- master.’ The maid stuttered, didn’t dare to even spare a single glance at her young master.

‘Was it about me and Sehun?’ Kai asked while staring deathly at the maid.

‘N- No, y-young master.’ The older bowed and quickly walked away from Kai, dragging herself to the living hall. She scared that the secret would slip out from if she kept on standing in front of the younger.

Kai frowned and shrugged off his negative thought about his dad. He fished out the phone from his pocket and began to dial Sehun’s number.

After a few seconds,

‘Sehun what took you so long to ar-‘

Before he could finish his words, Sehun cut him out with a shaky voice and said, ‘Kai we need to talk.’

The blonde was sobbing and it made the brunette froze. What was actually happened to Sehun?

‘Sehun what happen?’ Kai asked worriedly.

‘Meet me at my place and I’ll tell you everything.’ With that, Sehun hung up the phone and left Kai in confusion.

Kai shook his head vigorously and jogged to the living hall. The living hall was decorated with English contemporary style which was Kai’s favorite. There were black leather couch with a glass table on the right side. He shuffled closer and grabbed his car key on the glass table and quickly walked out of the mansion heading to his car.

The brunette drove himself to Sehun’s place. The blonde’s shaky voice still echoed in his head. Thousand questions lingered in his mind. He didn’t know how to throw the negative thoughts away. Kai kept on thinking about his dad. It was almost 3 years since he confessed to the pale-skinned boy, but his dad had never agreed with their relationship. It was all because of Sehun’s status.

The blonde was adopted by Johnny Dawson when he was 10 years old. Johnny Dawson was an American but then he gets married to a Korean girl named Kwon Yuri in 1994. He was the president of BMW in United State but decided to move to Korea for his wife’s sake. He waited for almost 10 years to get a child but unfortunately his wife couldn’t give birth. One day, he dropped by at the Sungmin’s Orphanage for adoption and that was when he first met the pale-skinned boy named Oh Sehun.

Sehun was a happy kid, though he had to go through his life without parents but he had never forgotten on how to smile and made people around him feeling warm and happy with his existence. So starting from that day, Johnny decided to visit the orphanage every day until he succeeded to be Sehun’s foster parent.

Even though Sehun’s foster parents were great businessman in Korea, Kai’s dad still hated the boy. Little did Kai know his dad had investigated everything about Sehun and that was the reason why he couldn’t stop to make Sehun suffer but Kai would always be the one who protect the younger from his dad. No matter how thick the line between them, Kai would always walked across the line just to be by the blonde’s side.

Kai once decided to commit suicide when his dad asked him to break the relationship with Sehun. He couldn’t survive his life without the male that taught him how to smile, how to be positive, how to be normal like others because Kim Jongin as known as Kai had never known how to make friends, he was a cold-hearted boy and arrogant back then until he met the blonde who always smiled brightly though his heart ached, friendly, loved to make friends with everyone, and it was enough to make the brunette’s heart flustered.

Kai parked the car in front of Sehun’s mansion and quickly made his way heading to the main door. When he was about to press the bell, the door creaked open and Sehun was the one who opened the door, standing right in front of him with tears falling down his cheeks, tremble. Kai froze, he stood stiffly in front of the other, speechless.

The blonde’s legs lost its strength. He fell down sitting on the floor. He was crying violently in front of the latter.

Kai quickly stepped inside and knelt down on the floor. He leaned closer and pulled Sehun into his arms. “Sehun what’s wrong? What’s happening?”

“Tell me why did you cry?”

Silence. Sehun’s sob filled the air. Kai’s heart skipped a beat; he was worried, tears forming in his eyes. He hated to see the blonde sad. He took a deep breath, lifted the blonde in bridal style and walked upstairs heading to the blonde’s bedroom.

Sehun couldn’t stop crying; he wasn’t ready to leave the brunette and never wished to leave him. He cried on Kai’s shoulder, couldn’t even speak. His heart hurts and he wanted to just stay still in the brunette’s arms forever.

When they reached the bedroom, Kai walked closer to the couch and made himself sat down with Sehun sitting on his lap. He hugged the blonde tightly and asked, “What did they do to you?”

Sehun didn’t answer, instead he caressed the latter’s cheeks with his thumbs. He leaned in, closing his eyes and brushed his lips on Kai’s. His heart hurts so deep, it cuts like a knife, the wounds wouldn’t heal and he wouldn’t go on with his life if he had to leave the brunette and obeyed to his father. So he took the chance to calm himself with the warmth of Kai’s lips and hug that would probably be gone on the day after tomorrow.

Kai frowned in confusion but he just let the blonde’s warm lips brushing on his. Sehun’s tears wet his skin, his heart beat racing.

The tanned circled his arms around the blonde’s waist tightly. Pulling the blonde closer, started to close the distance between them. He kissed the blonde passionately and soft, feeling the taste that only Sehun carries. He could feel the warmth of the pale-skinned boy’s tears on his skin. He slowly pulled away, staring deeply inside the blonde’s eyes and caressed his cheek. “What’s happening? He’s trying to hurt you again, isn’t he?”

Sehun shook his head and without words he gets off Kai’s lap, stepping closer to the bed that was a few feet away from him and climbed up. He leaned his back against the headboard, pulling his knees to his chest and buried his face in his arms.

Kai eyed the blonde and sighed. He had no idea why Sehun was acting weird and insisted to voice out of what had burdened him inside. The brunette ruffled his hair in frustration and stood up. He glanced out the window that was on the left side, it was still raining and God seemed to understand of what he was feeling.

The brunette huffed and walked closer to Sehun and sat at the edge of the bed.

“Sehun-ah.” Kai called with a soft voice trying to make the pale-skinned boy speak.

“Tell me what I should do,” Sehun said his voice barely above whisper.

Kai let out a long sighed and said, “Sehun look at me,” he paused while Sehun tilting his head to look at the latter in front of him, “No matter what happen, I will always be here beside you. Please don’t make it hard. Tell me what was actually happened to you? I hate seeing you like this. It hurts me deeply inside.”

Sehun climbed down the bed and made himself sat next to Kai. With eyes on the floor, his hands played with the hem of his shirt, trying to find the proper word to speak.

Kai wrapped his arm around the younger’s shoulder and whispered to his ear, “What’s wrong baby?”

The younger then leaned closer, circling his arms around the brunette’s waist and buried his face in the crook of Kai’s neck.

“I’m leaving…”

(End of flashback.)

He stood at the balcony, gazing at the beautiful scenery right in front of him but he felt empty. The world was no longer colorful to him, the sun that shone above him was gloomed, and he felt the windy breeze that brushed his skin was sharp like a knife that skinned him alive. Tears forming in his eyes slowly fell down his cheeks and his heart couldn’t stop screaming under his chest. Yesterday’s tragedy was flashing behind his eyes and it was too hard to chase it away.

“Young master?”

The familiar voice that was right behind him brought him back to the reality. He wiped away his tears with his ring finger and his heels to face the latter.

“Yes?” Kai voiced, raising his brows and pursed his lips flatly.

“Everything is ready young master and- master is waiting for you at the living hall.” The maid bowed at Kai and made her way out from the younger’s bedroom.

He sighed, rubbing his temples and slowly walked to his bed, dragging the luggage that was packed with his belongings with him and made his way out of his bedroom heading to the living hall.

As he reached the living hall, he saw his dad was sitting on the black leather couch with arms crossing his chest.

Kai clenched his fist and gritted his teeth. His heart was set into fire every time he saw the older. “What do you want?” he growled.

“Son…” Mr. Kim stood up and stepped closer to Kai and hugged the younger.

Kai quickly shoved him away and yelled, “Don’t touch me! I hate you! You don’t deserve my respect! You’re disgusting! Are you happy now after destroying my life?!!”

“Jongin please, forgive me son.” Mr. Kim begged kneeling down on the floor for apologize.

“I won’t forgive you.” With that Kai stepped out from the mansion heading to the car.

He would never forgive his father and he would never coming back to Korea because there was nothing left for him to stay in the country. He had lost everything in his life. He had lost the most important person just because of his father’s stupid action. Kai decided to go to Beijing and start a new life with his cousin’s family, Xi Luhan – half Korean and half Chinese – because that was the only way he had, to release the pain inside him.

He knew that his wounds wouldn’t be healed, and he knew that even though it could be cured, the scar would always be there in his heart. The memory of the blonde would always flash in his mind. He wanted to forget but at the same time, that was the only thing that he had and forgetting the blonde wouldn’t be the best.

He was hoping that everything was just a nightmare and he needed to wake up and saw the blonde was sleeping peacefully beside him. But it was impossible; Sehun had already gone to another world, leaving him alone in the darkness, surrounded by the sorrows and colorless life. His heart couldn’t stop from bleeding and he knew it wouldn’t stop no matter how hard he tried to cure, it was useless.

Sehun’s voice kept on echoing in his head, the way the blonde whining, laughing, chuckling, giggling and mad, everything. Sometimes he curved his lips up because of the memory but the pain would creep throughout his body, clutching his chest and his heart would cry. Tears had never left his eyes, though it couldn’t roll down his cheeks but it was still there, forming in his eyes.

Flashback:

Kai widened his eyes in surprise and pulled away from the hug. “What?!”

“Kai…” Sehun froze; he choked on his breath, the words stuck in his throat.

“No- No Sehun. No! I don’t want you to leave me! Why are you being like this?! For God’s sake Sehun, how could you even- ugh!” Kai shouted as he stood up walking back and forth and groaned angrily.

“P- Please Kai, don’t- don’t make it hard.” Sehun stuttered, He buried his face in his palms and cried.

“You’re the one who making it hard Sehun! It’s you!” The brunette yelled but then he quickly his back to see the blonde as he heard the blonde was sobbing violently, his body trembling.

Guilt crept under his skin. He stepped closer and knelt down on the floor in front of Sehun. “Sehun…” He called. The younger was still crying, didn’t even buy to look at the older in front of him.

Sehun slid down to the floor as the older was pulling him into tight embrace. He buried his face in the crook of Kai’s neck and brought his arms circling the older waist.

With tears rolling down his cheek, Sehun slowly told the brunette about everything that had just happened that day. He wanted to keep it as a secret but he couldn’t bear the pain alone. He knew that his father was trying to protect him from Kai’s dad but at the same time, he didn’t want to leave his lover and he would survive his life no matter what happen as long as Kai stood beside him and stay with him forever.

The blonde’s foster father had asked him to leave the country, move to United States and stay with the grandparents because Johnny – Sehun’s foster father – didn’t want his son to stay still with Kai since he knew that Kim Sang Hyuk – Kai’s dad – was planning something that would harm the blonde’s life and he wouldn’t let his one and only son being hurt by Sang Hyuk.

Johnny realized that Sehun would always smile happily when the brunette was with him but the blonde also suffered a lot because of Kai’s dad. He knew that his son’s happiness was more important than everything and Kai was the person who made the younger shines but the fact of Kim Sang Hyuk hated his son was a little too much for him to accept and he wanted to protect Sehun from the devil.

Listening to the other story, Kai decided to leave the country and start a new life somewhere else but not in Korea. He asked the blonde to pack all the belongings and move to the airport but Sehun insisted to stay in Korea and wanted to face everything together.

“No, we need to leave this country. I promise we’ll have a better life than this, okay?” Kai said, trying to console the younger.

Sehun bit his lower lip, hands playing with the hem of his shirt, and glance at the older in front of him. “Are you sure we’ll be happy?” He asked with a sad voice.

“Trust me, we’ll be happy. You and me, together leave this country. I know this is hard for you to decide, but it’s the only choice that we have- Please Sehun-ah.” Kai exclaimed, while cupping the younger’s face.

Sehun let out a long sigh and slowly nodded while smiling bitterly at the older in front of him. Part of him, he was happy to leave this country together with Kai but part of him, he felt sorry for his father, and he was hoping that Johnny would understand about his decision.

With that, Kai reached his personal butler through the phone and told the other to book for a room at the Hilton Hotel for one night and book the ticket to Beijing for the next day.

The brunette decided to stay at the hotel while waiting to move out from Korea on the next day with Sehun. Kai quickly helped the blonde to pack all the belongings into the luggage and bring all the important documents together. After they settled up the pack things, both of them hurriedly stormed out of the bedroom heading out the mansion.

When they reached the living hall, their steps suddenly froze as Johnny was sitting on the couch with the butler standing next to him, and fierce plastered on his face.

“Where are you going Sehun?” Johnny growled, getting off the couch and stepped closer to Kai and Sehun who were standing stiffly, trembles.

“I- I …” Sehun stuttered. His body was shivering; he was scared to tell the truth to the older.

“Tell me!!” Johnny yelled to his son that made the younger lips trembling and cried.

“It’s my fault sir. Please don’t mad at-“ Kai couldn’t finish his words.

Johnny cut it out and yelled, “Shut up! Your father is the one who make him suffer! And now you want to take him away from me?! You are ungra-”

“Father!” Sehun paused; he didn’t mean to yell at his father. Then he continued, “Father, listen to me first. I’m begging you.” With that Sehun knelt down on the floor hanging his head down and sobbing violently.

Both Kai and Johnny were startled upon the blonde’s respond and eyes widened in disbelief.

“I- I had never wished to be an- an orphan, I h- had never wished to be suff- suffered, and- and I had never wished to disobey you, f- father but please… give me a chance to live happily with my lover.” Sehun said, sniffle.

“Sehun-ah…” Johnny made himself down, kneeling in front of the younger and pulled his son into tight embrace. “I just want you to be happy…”

“Then let me go…” Sehun said with his voice above whisper, burying his face into his father’s chest.

Johnny lost for words, he wanted the blonde to be happy but at the same time, he wasn’t willing his son to leave him with the brunette because Sehun was the one and only son that he had. When Yuri – his wife – passed away a few years ago because of the brain cancer, Sehun was the only one that could light up his life and the blonde was the only one that gave him spirit to move on his life.

Kai was speechless; he could only watch the scene in front of him without saying a word. He felt guilty towards Johnny but he didn’t want to be apart with the blonde.

Johnny closed his eyes tightly for a second and nodded. “O- Okay… if that’s what you want, I’ll let you go son…” He felt the world crushing down as he slipped the words out from his mouth. He was hurt to let the blonde go, but his pain wasn’t a big matter as long as he could see the blonde smile.

“Promise me you’ll be happy. Tell me once you arrived at your new place, I promise to help you from here. Please be happy for me,” He paused then tilted his head to look at Kai who was standing in front of him, “Kai, promise me that you won’t leave him, I don’t want him to be suffered.”

“I – I promise sir. I will take care of him and I won’t leave him alone, not even once.” Kai promised while smiling bitterly at the older.

Sehun pulled away and pecked a kiss on his father’s forehead. “I promise to be happy, and I promise to not forget you as my only father that I love the most.”

Johnny cried but he quickly brushed the tears away and smiled at the younger in front of him. “Go, save your last smile. Remember that I’ll always be here for you, son.”

With that, Sehun hugged his father tightly for the last time, pulling the older to stand up. The blonde pecked one last kiss on his father’s cheek and said, “I’ll always be there for you.” He smiled, grabbing his luggage on the right hand and intertwined the other hand with Kai’s.

Johnny pulled Kai into a hug and whispered, “Take care of my son.”

Kai let out a heavy breath and slowly nodded as he pulled away from the hug. He thanked to the older and quickly made his way out of the mansion together with Sehun. Once they reached out from the mansion, Sehun his heels and saw his father was standing in front of the main door bidding goodbye at him. He felt the steps were so heavy and seeing the older for the last time gave him a big pang on his chest. It was hurt and painful. He had never wished to leave his father alone, but that was the only chance that he had and he promised to himself to visit his father one day.

Once they get in the car, Kai quickly drove heading to his place to take all his belongings. He didn’t want to think of what his dad might be done when he left the mansion, he just wanted to live freely without his dad and get the hell out from the prison.

Little did they know, two pair of eyes were watching and following them.

On their way to Kai’s place, there was awkward silence filling the air. Sehun was in his deep thought about Johnny, he felt guilty and ungrateful. His foster father had poured all his love towards him and gave everything that he need, but the way he left the older was cruel. He felt sorry for the older and was hoping that he could meet his father again, one day.

Kai was thinking about his dad, what would the older do after he knew that his only son would leave the country with the blonde? And what the older would do to Sehun if he knew that the blonde was with him right then and there? He was worried and feeling mad toward his dad.

After 20 minutes, they had arrived in front of Kai’s mansion. Before the brunette get out from the car, he asked the blonde to stay there and wait until he stepped out from the mansion.

Sehun just nodded and smiled bitterly at the older but before Kai reached his legs out from the car, the blonde brought his hand to the brunette’s neck and pulled him closer. The pale-skinned boy crashed his lips onto Kai’s. He gave the older a gentle yet passionate kiss like it was the one last kiss that he saved for the older.

Kai deepened before he pulled away and pecked a kiss on the blonde’s forehead. “I’ll be back in 10 minutes, promise.” He caressed the blonde’s cheek and quickly made his way out from the car heading inside the mansion.

When he reached inside, he let out a long sigh in relief; fortunately his dad wasn’t there. He quickened his steps to upstairs heading to his bedroom. He couldn’t wait any longer as he shuffled to the closet; he grabbed all his belongings and packed into the luggage and shuffling to his nightstand, pulled out the drawer and took his passport and all the important documents along.

Once he settled his business, he quickly walked out from the bedroom, dragging his legs down the stairs and jogged to the main door of the mansion. As he reached out, he could see the blonde was waving happily at him inside the car a few meters away from him. He smiled sweetly at the blonde and walked closer to the car but suddenly he heard tires screeching ran towards him and in just one blink, he was lying on the ground. His back hurts because his body was hitting the ground but then he realized, what was happening? He whipped his head to the left and saw a body was lying on the ground, the person was coughing blood. He gets off the ground and ran toward the person. It was Sehun, his lover, blood covered all over the blonde’s body.

He widened his eyes and hurriedly lifted the blonde lying on his lap, hugging him tightly in his arms. “Sehun!! Please wake up!! Sehun!!”

The blonde finally opened his eyes. With lips trembling and shivering hands, he brought his hand to the brunette’s face. “K – Kai, p – promise…” he paused, trying to gasp for air and breath, “P – promise, that – that you w – will live… live your life – happily with – without me, hum?” He smiled with blood kept on flowing down from top of his head down to his face.

“No Sehun! I won’t live my life without you, please Sehun don’t leave.” Kai begged, crying violently while hugging the blonde tightly in his arms. He couldn’t survive without Sehun; he couldn’t live without his one and only happiness. His heart hurts and he wanted to just end his life right then and there.

“Shh… please don’t cry. I – I’m here.” Sehun put his index finger on the brunette’s lips.

“Sehun, I love you please don’t leave me…” With that, Kai suddenly felt the blonde’s finger slid down from his lips and fell on his lap. The blonde’s heart had stopped beating; he could feel the time stopped, the world turned to pitch black, his heart being stabbed by the fact that the blonde was leaving.

“NO!!!” His world crushed down, his heart started to bleed, he lost his breath, and he could feel his heart stopped beating; the moon lost its light and the world turned into black. Darkness had surrounded him. Empty.

[End of flashback]

Beijing:

He stood at the backyard of his new place, Luhan’s family mansion. There was a beautiful garden with cherry blossoms, a small lake, jacarandas, white metal benches and table for the teatime more like patios on the left side, big pergola with vines on the top of it down to the ground covering the pergola on the right side. He observed the nature, it brought him felt the ease and the earthy smell was calming him inside, then he closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of nature down to his spines.

‘Are you okay?’ The blonde’s asked.

Kai pouted and shook his head, leaning closer to the blonde and rested his head on the latter’s chest. ‘I can’t sleep…’ he then nuzzled in the crook of Sehun’s neck.

‘You want me to lull you?’ Sehun asked with a soft voice whispering to Kai’s ear and curving his lips up. He loved the scent of the brunette; he loved it when the brunette whined couldn’t sleep. He love it when Kai asked him to sing a lullaby and he loved to stay like that, with the tanned lying next to him, resting head on his chest with arms around his waist. He was hoping that he could stay with the tanned like that forever.

Kai nodded his head and with that the blonde started to sing a lullaby.

The sun'll come out tomorrow

Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there'll be sun

Just thinking' about tomorrow

Clear away the cobwebs and the sorrow till' there's none

When I'm stuck with a day that's grey and lonely

I just stick up my chin and grin and say oh

The sun'll come out tomorrow

So you got to hang on till' tomorrow, come what may…

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow

You're only a day away…

When I'm stuck with a day that's gray and lonely

I just stick up my chin and grin and say....

Kai would always drift to sleep soon as the blonde sang him that lullaby. He loved the lullaby that the pale-skinned boy sang to his ear every time he couldn’t sleep, and he wished that he could live with his one and only lullaby until his last breath and he wanted to grow older with the blonde. He didn’t know how to spend his life time without the younger. He wished that the younger would always be with him, it was okay if his death was coming on tomorrow as long as the blonde was there for him. But he wouldn’t let the blonde leave him before he could end his life in the younger’s arms.

He opened his eyes, tears were rolling down his cheeks, wet his skin and the wind that was breezing brushed his skin. It was hurt. The blood that was flowing inside him was like volcano’s larva, eating him alive and his heart was beating hardly under his chest, giving him pain. He clutched his chest, choked on his own breath. There was something that kept on scratching his heart. But then suddenly a white silhouette reached his eyes. He couldn’t even see clearly at the said things on the right side a few meters away from him. He narrowed his eyes and kept on wondering of what was actually coming to him? He bit his lower lip and brought his hand forward trying to reach the silhouette then he heard a soft voice was whispering right next to his ear.

‘I will always be your lullaby. I love you, Kai…’
